Hey PF fam, I hope everyone is doing well during these crazy times. I wanted to share something that happened a few weeks ago that's still bothering me. My little brother and I go to this gym regularly. I'm 32 years old and have been a member of PF since high school, which gives you some perspective. My little brother is 19 and has a stutter and a learning disability. Both have improved as he's gotten older, but they're still there. He doesn't let that hold him back. He was in the marching band in high school, graduated, and is now in a program called Compass at the University of Alabama. Compass assists with special education, and my family and I are grateful that U of A accepted him into the program.

Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding with a front desk associate that led to her calling the police on my brother. Since our mother pays for the account my little brother uses, he usually provides her phone number or uses the PF app to enter the gym. He recently got a new phone, and the app wasn't downloaded. So, he gave our mom's phone number, which he's done many times without issue. However, this time, the number came up under my old account, which has my picture. The associate thought my little brother was trying to use someone else's account. After she couldn't find his account, she called the supervisor, and they asked him to leave. My little brother then called our mother because he knew it was a misunderstanding and that he had an active account. Our mom spoke with the associate, explaining my little brother's learning disability. The associate was rude and said that my little brother didn't have a disability, claiming she knew people who had it and insinuating he was lying.

Our mother works for the state, so she couldn't come to the gym to handle the matter immediately. My mom and little brother contacted me, and I drove up to address the situation. The police officer who arrived was very helpful and helped get the proper information. After the officer gathered some information, the front desk associate, who was on the phone with the supervisor, asked the officer to charge my little brother with trespassing. This confused me, my little brother, and even the cop. I explained to the cop that my little brother doesn't drive and that my mother or I are his ride home. Plus, we were trying to resolve the matter, so why would he leave if I, his guardian, was speaking to the cop and the front desk associate? It made no sense.

It turned out that when the cop asked the front desk lady to simply type in my little brother's first and last name, she found that he had an active account the whole time. The cop told us that my little brother was welcome to stay and work out if he wanted since he had an active account. I thanked the cop and explained that my little brother felt very uncomfortable and traumatized by the situation, so we decided it was best to come back another time. My mother and I spoke with the DM of the PF, and they were understanding and helpful. We stated that we didn't want any accommodations, but we wanted her to have some self-reflection, and maybe just simply do her job instead of acting irrational in that manner. Plus she never apologized to either of us that SHE was the one who made the mistake. No accountability. Furthermore, calling the cops on my little brother when there was no threat was unprofessional and out of bounds. I even asked her did she feel threatened and she stated she didn't feel that way.

I wanted to share this with the Tuscaloosa community who works out at PF. If you took the time to read this, I appreciate you. Hopefully, this type of thing will never happen again. Yes, my little brother and I will continue to come to this location because we pay just like every other member, and we enjoy the other members and associates at this facility.

Planet fitness on Skyland in Tuscaloosa has no lights in the parking area. It is extremely dark and the only light they have is from the headlights of the parked cars. It is very dangerous! I was told that there’s no cameras in the parking area which is a cause for safety. Also, a worker told me that she was afraid to walk to her car at the end of her shift because it’s so dark out. Another concern is the lockers in the workout area, there’s plenty available but, majority of them do not work!!!! I’m sure planet can fix these issues considering there’s 3 PF locations here. I just don’t want to go out of my way to workout in another part of town when this location is up the street from my home.

Sad but true the Planet Fitness property owners don't like trucks parking in their parking lot to patronize their tenants who lease areas of the shopping center. The property owners like to receive their supplies but boot the truck driver out who would like to go to the Planet Fitness.

Amazing group of people that work here! I’m always greeted with a smile and when leaving I’m always told to have a nice day. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly. Locker rooms and restrooms are clean. The no judgment and welcoming environment is what keeps me motivated to keep coming back. Even the personal trainer, Dexter, is amazing and very patient with me while teaching me how to use almost every machine while showing me the correct form. I’ve been working out for about a month now and every day I go I work my way up a little bit more. I love this gym and I think others would love it toon

I have actually seen the employees on their hands and knees with small brushes cleaning the grout! If that doesn't say that the place is clean, I don't know what does. Also, the Fitness instructor noticed that I was not using the equipment properly, and took the time to show me how to use it. Not to mention that the fitness instructor is very fit which isn't always the case. The employees also always greet you and say goodbye.

I travel all over the country for work and have been to locations in probably more than 50 cities. I have a medical condition that forces me to keep my bag with me in case of an emergency. It is a very small backpack and I always keep it completely clear of any and all walkways to avoid creating a tripping hazard for other members and guests. I did 30 minutes of cardio with my bag next to the elliptical I was using, I cleaned it off and went to use the chest press machine when Dexter approached me and told me I needed to keep my bag off of the floor. I tried reasoning with him because he was clearly being a bit over-the-top in how he was enforcing the club's policies. He absolutely didn't care about the fact that I had a medical condition and said that I was telling him things that "didn't matter" and that some gyms let "anything go" but "not in his gym". I told him I respect him for running a clean and organized gym, but I would simply leave and get out his way if I was creating such an issue with my bag. So I left.

It was completely uncalled for and is very disappointing because this gym has great equipment and I've had nothing but great workouts at this location over the past 6-7 years. Not that I expect the Ritz-Carlton treatment at Planet Fitness, but I pay my bill on time every month, I clean up after myself AND OTHERS, and I don't bother anyone when I come to the gym. If I had a HUGE bag in the middle of the walkway or free-weight area, then I would totally understand his position. I primarily keep the bag with me due to a medical condition that I cannot control.

Lastly, nothing irritates me more than having policies selectively enforced. While I was doing my cardio, I saw another person on the chest press machine in front of me wearing steel-toe boots and other attire that does not follow club policy yet he was left alone and was free to do his workout without being harassed.

I just don't understand how I can go to the gym for 7 years and then randomly be confronted about something so insignificant when my bag was out of the way and gave me piece of mind in case of an emergency.

Feedback to consider: Listen with empathy and enforce the spirit of the policies not the letter. Would you give someone a speeding ticket for going 31 in a 30?

I would love to go here, but I just called the employee on site and they said that I will have to get a parking pass for my semi truck, and that if I’m parked there for longer than 2 hours that the owner of the parking lot will have permission to tow. I’m so glad I travel the entire country where other planet fitnesses will allow truck parking overnight!!! Don’t go to this one truckers🤷🏼‍♀️

It's sad that you can't even park here to get a good workout. And maybe a somewhat decent shower without having your Truck being towed. It said this country does not want you to park and take a break. A much needed break, but won't all of them overnight items to be at the front door? 25 years on the road and still getting worse.

I am over 9 months pregnant currently, and was having some billing issues with my membership. I had visited the club closest to me in Northport around February of 2022, to cancel my membership. (I was/am pregnant and would not be utilizing it) They advised me my active membership was not with them and that they would not be able to cancel. So I visited the midtown club, and spoke with an associate named Ezra - who stated he canceled my membership.. a few months later in May 2022, I noted that I was still being billed for a membership. I called the midtown location, and they stated my original membership was canceled in 2017, but that I had an active membership with the skyland location?…. I wish I had been notified I did not have an active membership to cancel with the midtown location, but instead with skyland at that visit. No membership has been canceled during my Midtown visit.. no one at midtown club gave helpful guidance. They treated it as if it were my fault, and I realize I can visit in person or cancel by letter - however I was told my membership had been canceled once I visited the midtown location in February of 2022, and no one at the midtown location attempted to resolve the situation once I brought this to their attention.

In a last effort, I contacted the skyland location where the active membership was, to see if my husband could come by in person to cancel. I spoke with a gentleman by the name of Hunter. He handled the conversation with such humbleness! Hunter was very respectful, understanding, and reassuring to the situation. Hunter took accountability for others actions in what may seem like a minuscule event, but his customer service skills are incredible! Even though he was reiterating the same process of cancellation, he offered additional solutions/reassurance when no one else did. I told him I would mail a letter, and thanked him for his time! Hunter then of his own accord called me back to let me know he spoke to his regional manager, and
made an exception for my husband to come by and cancel!! I work in customer service, and I hope that Hunter and his team see how much his actions are appreciated! He has excellent communication skills, and conflict resolution. This active problem solving/kindness goes a long way in the business world!
