I absolutely love this small family owned/operated gym! It’s always spotless and well-maintained, which makes working out so much more enjoyable. It’s also kid friendly, which is a huge bonus to any parent! It is a place to come if you want to be around good people who work hard.
You will maybe have a dance party or two

I worked out at BODI for 3 years prior to joining this gym and couldn’t be happier. I’ve made more progress in 6 months than I ever did with the HIIT method of training. Have dropped in to this gym a few times now, coincidentally always on Thursdays, which is their ENDURO days, and have had an awesome experience each time. First is super easy to get to right off 101 and University, plenty of parking, and multiple restrooms to change into workout gear (was coming straight from work one time). Was greeted by Derek Arellano (believe he is the owner) each time and he gave me a quick run down of the class structure, showed me the equipment, and got me prepped for class. It is a really large space, I’d say bigger than most CrossFit spaces, and all the equipment seems new and in great condition. The enduro classes I’ve attended consist of four pods, each with two or three movements. You select three of the four pods, each consisting of a 12 Minute AMRAP, and rotate after each 12 minute segment. Nice being able to omit one of the four as I was coming off a few straight leg days prior so i was lucky to do the chest, back, and cardio movements. Each 12 minute AMRAP is well programmed for quick transition between movements with cardio thrown in. They have Rowers, Ski Ergs, Echo Bikes, and Treadmills for cardio so rad variety and ability to mix it up. One thing I like is the ingenuity of movements and deviation from your standard movements you’d see in a CrossFit gym day in and day out. For example today’s class we had landmine clean and presses in one pod… which quite literally engaged the entire body and had me gassed at the end of each set. I don’t think I’ve ever done a landmine in another gym group fitness hym. In addition to Derek coach Kayla on the floor so awesome to see them assisting those less experienced with the various movements, and really pressing the members that want to torch it. Im a fairly experienced gym goer and drop in around the Southwest as I travel for work most weeks and this place is one of the top spots I’ve crossed in my travels. Thankfully I live on Tempe town lake and can bike over whenever. Friendly staff and members and a hell of a workout. Will be back for sure. OH and there is a freaking smoothie shop attached to it, how convenient is that! Tight tight tight.

When I moved to Tempe, I was looking for my “third place.” Somewhere outside of my home and work where I could go to spend time with folks of shared interests and have fun doing it. Derek runs a fantastic gym! He is a great all around coach and makes even the toughest days in the gym so enjoyable that I keep coming back! It feels like a little hang out with friends - we just happen to be lifting heavy stuff and getting stronger. 💪🏼

He and the other trainers take the overwhelm and stress out of the usual gym experience.

Joined Volition gym as a part of the small group fitness sessions. Let me start off my telling how great the instructors are, both Derek and Sophie are extremely knowledgeable and also super helpful. The program is suitable for people with all body types focusing on building strength as well as flexibility. Well, where to begin… Volition is the first fitness program that I can throughly say I LOVE. After 19 years of consistent weight lifting experience it’s is so new, so challenging and most of all it is FUN. I’ve been around the block, tried every program, done every fad and “hardcore” program from powerlifting to bodybuilding and since I started with Derek and Volition a year ago, my body has never responded so well (started in small group training, switched to online program after moving to CA 3 months ago).

It’s difficult to describe but over these past 12 months I have built a strong, athletic and proportional physique that not only looks good but FEELS good. I feel strong, capable and most of all, competent. My lower back issues have disappeared and no more fearing pulling a weird ligament when I bend over to pick something up. From in-person to online training, Volition is absolutely unmatched . Could not recommend anything more. From experienced lifter to newbie in the gym just trying to get in shape, this program adapts TO YOU

Volition is a great small gym for any level of athleticism. Wether you are just starting or a retired athlete this is a great spot. All of the coaches are wonderful and very knowledgeable about each and every exercise. Workouts are designed to help strengthen muscles of the whole body and are not the typical 3 or 4 day split workouts. Highly recommend Volition to anyone who wants to start the workout routine and life style but doesn’t know where to start or is tired or those packed gyms. Classes at all times of the day make it super convenient to get a solid workout in no matter what is going on in the day to day life. A community for life.

I was introduced to this gym by one of my closest friends and roommates. She started up at this gym and she would always rave about it to me. And if you’re looking for a gym to help you achieve the results you’re looking for THIS IS THE PLACE. Legit I watched my roommate get shredded in no time and all the while being a full time student and having a part time job. It never seemed to take up her life either. She just loved going and it worked out great with her schedule. Fast forward to now, I decided to give it a try and LOVEEEE IT. For context I just graduated and was looking for a nice and encouraging community of people while getting a good balance of good workouts and pushing me to be stronger. And boy is this the place!! And the thing is, weighty lifting can be spooky sometimes- I don’t consider myself a strong person so sometimes when we do deadlifts and such I get a little nervous! But the trainers and other gym goers make me feel like I can do ANYTHING! I couldn’t recommend a place more. They push you if it’s your first day in the gym or the thousandth. Great place with great people who will challenge and support you everyday. Go volition! PS my trainer Kayla is literally to die for she has easily become a reason I get myself out of bed in the morning. She really has become a friend :)

I came to Derek’s classes at Volition from CrossFit and did not know what to expect. Different coaches run different programs at different times of day. Then all classes complete the same tests at the end of a training cycle. Each class is small, like having a personal training session with a small group of friends. Everyone is friendly and it’s nice seeing the same faces every day. The coaches watch to ensure you are doing the correct thing and clearly have cultivated relationships with each individual member. These past 12 weeks I have learned to enjoy the hard work and have learned a lot as an athlete and as a coach. I didn’t track my food or really care about anything other than roughly getting in enough protein and making sure I am fueled overall (aka hamburgers were my best friend, and if you remember when I didn’t red meat that’s also a win). I honestly don’t know what I was expecting to lift/feel/see at the end of this program so let’s break down what happened. I basically gained in every way possible, good and bad:

- Strength: This is #1 for me. Every lift increased not only from my previous max, but I hit 3RM at weights higher than my previous 1RM for the big 3
- Muscle Mass: I gained a little bit of muscle mass, makes sense that it wasn’t a ton as I wasn’t necessarily training for hypertrophy (which might change soon) but strength training will still increase muscle mass to some degree
- Body Image: this isn’t the best thing to quantify, but my body image has absolutely improved along with my confidence. I would have thought that I lost body fat just based on how I feel/what I see in the mirror. This is more important to me than the reality of my body fat measurement
- Fat: I did actually gain a little bit of fat which is fine considering all the other positive gains. I know this comes down to nutrition and honestly my goal was to be adequately fed and I wouldn’t be Marlee if I didn’t eat like a linebacker. Good information to know but honestly don’t plan on doing anything about it immediately.
- Weight: obviously if I’m gaining muscle and fat my overall weight is going to increase. I’m here to tell you weight isn’t everything!!! Like I said I feel and look leaner than maybe my numbers tell me. Don’t let a computer tell you how to feel. (Inbody says I’m obese)

Overall this has been an amazing experience and I can’t say enough things about Derek and his team at Volition. I’m so glad I went in person for benchmark after being just an online client. My numbers are here if you want to look at them but don’t compare yours to mine. It’s not about that. Surround yourself with people who want to help you succeed and you will get where you want to be. 🏎️🚀💨✨

Volition is my favorite gym I’ve ever been to! I’ve been working with Soph in group training sessions for the past few months and have seen incredible results. I feel stronger, healthier, and I surprise myself all the time with how capable I am. I wasn’t a big gym person before this but I find myself genuinely enjoying my workouts now. If you are looking for a group of trainers who truly live and breathe for their craft, and are committed to sharing their knowledge with you - I would strongly suggest coming in. Volition is more than a gym, it’s Functional mobility training, and a lifestyle. Derek really takes the time to learn about each of his clients and figure out what works for them and what doesn’t. My favorite part of working out with volition is that they provide you with the knowledge and understanding of why the movements you are doing will have the highest impact or yield over time. I LOVE this program! It is a whole life changing experience, not just training. I have worked with another trainer where it was all about heavy strenuous lifting. Volition focuses on maximizing your workouts with effective movements, making for better results and less recovery. One of my favorite parts is the education. I have loved my sessions with my personal trainer, April Sorensen. She took the time before we started to go over my goals, teach me about macros and get a baseline of my movements and any injuries/modifications. I have been working with Derek at Volition for 6 months consistently and without a doubt this is has been my favorite training experience in my adult life. Both my physical and mental transformation have been night and day. Derek pays attention to every detail of the program and is truly thoughtful in his approach to strength building, fat burning, functionality and overall health and wellness. You leave every session feeling like a better version of yourself than when you stepped through the door. In a word they are AWESOME!

Now the story, I have been training at different levels for 25+ years. I have recently developed some shoulder issues that has depleted my upper body strength as well as causing me chronic pain.

I walked into Volition on a whim, looking for circuit training and perhaps some group personal training. After speaking with Derek he told me that April would be a good fit. Boy was he right!

April, took time to listen to my concerns and we adjusted some movements that almost immediately gave me some great results. Pain levels were greatly reduced, mobility increased and upper body strength started to return. She created custom workouts on their app for me to do while on vacation and on days I was going to the gym on my own….simply amazing.

I highly recommend them to anyone at any age or fitness level who wants to build strength and increase flexibility.

Derek and the Volition team are great. I’ve been training with Derek for about six months now and have experienced very positive results. The biggest differentiator that I have noticed with him vs other trainers is that he takes time to make sure you are training properly. The semi-private size (1-3 people, typically) that I am a part of is great because he is able to give attention to the necessary details to make your training efficient and effective. He takes time to explain the how and the why behind what we do. This helps build confidence in what I do when working with him but, more importantly, gives me the knowledge to take it into my individual training when I’m not with him.

He’s also just a genuine dude who cares about how you are doing as a human. I enjoy our chats and he’s a good dude to have in your circle. You’ll never feel like just a client or just a number at Volition.

Though I have only worked with Derek, I also want to shout out two other trainers, Kayla and April, who lead women classes. I have witnessed their training while I have worked with Derek and can tell that they are just as passionate and solid at what they do. Ever since I decided to finally take my health seriously and start training with Volition, specifically with my trainer Kayla, I’ve found a new love that is strength training! I attend Kayla’s all-female small group class twice a week, a semi-private session, and a one-on-one for a total of four days a week. In just a few short months I’ve noticed increased energy outside the gym, an improvement in my mental health overall, and of course physical changes such as healthy muscle growth. I’m excited to continue to train with Kayla and continue to see results. She’s been amazing inside and outside the gym. She always has a plan on which moves we will be doing each session and helps adjust them as necessary to meet our bodies needs. Believe this! I’ve been training with Derek Arellano for just about five years, and believe he is one of the most experienced and committed trainer around. I started training three times a week, as part of a group session, really enjoying the variety and challenge he puts into the sessions. I have been working out with volition for a few weeks since leaving another small gym in the area where I started my fitness journey into powerlifting but after two years became stagnant. Volition in the few weeks we have been training has totally changed the way I think about lifting; they have a holistic approach to their training it feels very body centric not just pick up the heavy thing and putting back down but everything thing has a thoughtful purpose. with a few tweaks made to my form I feel a world of difference. As a rugby player its important to work smarter not harder and every time I'm in the gym I feel i'm working out my mind and body and no time is wasted. I will also say if you're looking to get away from the toxic big box gyms this is the place for you. I have been to many gyms and this one truly feels different and that it does not just talk the talk about being inclusive to all people but actually walks the walk and is actively learning to become even better. I’ve been working with Derek for over a year now. I’ve felt my self get stronger and have continuously been trying new movements the past 14 months. Each workout feels new/refreshing but also sticks to core fundamental movements that are great for strength and mobility. Wherever you’re at in your journey I recommend giving Volition a shot, you won’t be disappointed. I start started with semi-private classes to get the hang of things and gain more 1:1 attention, then once I felt more comfortable I jumped into the group classes, which I still feel I get a lot of attention from Derek as a trainer to make sure I am practicing good form and working hard. I met Derek in a circle k store several years ago and started a conversation about the gym up the street. He told me to stop by and check it out. I think he was surprised when I walked through the door. He introduced me to people and showed me around the gym. The next day I started meeting with Derek and he got me started on my journey. Two 1/2 hour sessions a week and let me tell you I was exhausted at the end of the session. I knew it was going to be a battle as I was over 240 pounds and had been told by my doctor I needed to lose some weight. There were days I could not finish the 1/2 hour workouts but Derek understood and never made me feel bad about it. After these workouts I could barely move. And today at 67 years old I am working out with Derek 2 1 hour sessions a week and am walking 5 to 10 miles a day and am happy to report I am down to 185 pounds and off all my meds.

I have always needed accountability to help me be consistent with the gym. When I started my fitness journey I began in a Crossfit gym - I loved that I was able to move heavy weight, fast with a community of others around me. Unfortunately, the accountability lacked when it came to learning proper form and I ended up hurt and unmotivated to try something different... Until I met Derek, he TEACHES me movements that BENEFIT my body both in the present and future. I go into the gym excited for the FUN (no mundane schedules) new challenges he presents without the fear of hurting myself. I’ve been training with Derek for 2 years now and my life has drastically changed because of it. That may sound too good to be true but when I first started training with Derek, I had slipped discs in my lumbar spine and was told by my PT that I shouldn’t lift any weights, but I wasn’t going to take that for an answer, so I found a trainer to work with me. Over time, Derek and I have incorporated movements to not only relieve but eradicate the pain in my lower back with the strengthening of those muscles.
