I cannot say enough about how wonderful Athlon is. As an athlete and someone recovering from a serious injury, Athlon (and specifically Oak) has been integral and essential in my recovery - both mentally and physically. Their knowledge of the human body - muscles, nerves, tendons, etc. - and how the whole body works is amazing. It's like PT meshed with a superhero trainer. I had a fitness goal: prepare myself as best I could to allow a healthy recovery following knee replacement surgery. Ryan and his team of trainers at Athlon developed a workout plan, tailored to my goals. Following two months of workouts, the surgery was performed. As I continue to heal, I’m seeing excellent results especially with range of motion. My surgeon was also impressed by the healing results he was seeing.

I seriously can’t recommend Taylor enough! I’ve always struggled with pain in certain areas whenever I tried to lift weights, and honestly just started to think strength training wasn’t for me. But working with her has completely changed that. She really knows what she’s doing and has helped me build strength and a solid routine without the usual pain or flare-ups. I’ve never felt more confident or capable in the gym. She’s so supportive, smart, friendly and just fun to work with. If you’re thinking about working with a trainer, Taylor at Athlon is awesome! :)

I have been a member for more than a year and I love this gym. It is smaller but has everything you need and it is rarely super crowded. I work with personal trainer Taylor once a week. She is awesome and keeps me motivated and improving. I am an older retired exerciser but the gym has all ages and everyone is welcoming and friendly. I have tried lots of other gyms in SLO but this is the only one I actually keep attending regularly because it is such a good environment.

My trainer, Kaleb, has been incredible.
Not only is he very professional, but he also has a great sense of humor. He has made my workouts engaging and personal, and I truly feel that he cares about my achievements. Great gym with a friendly, community atmosphere and a systematic program for personal training. I've seen noticeable results with the program that has been developed for me. Update June 2025: I have been training here for 2 years now and I am still impressed with the quality of the workouts and how they have helped me. Melissa has been a huge asset to my fitness regimen and has really stepped up the quality of my workouts. Her depth of knowledge has been the biggest factor: she knows when and how to modify aspects of my personal plan to achieve the best outcome for me and to help me avoid injury. My strength has improved which has both made me feel better and has improved my performance when I am hiking, biking, etc. I definitely recommend both Athlon and Melissa for personal training.

Years ago, I suffered a significant injury to the discs in my lower back and have had the opportunity to work with several different physical therapist and trainers, but Octavio has found particular exercises to pinpoint my back problems and these have helped to strengthen and support the muscles around discs, reduce tightness and help me to reach relief and well-being in my life again. Athlon was the first gym I joined when I moved to the area over 10 years ago and haven’t found a reason to find another place. The trainers are amazing (Taylor in particular), the workouts are tailored to your goals, and it’s easy to build a community with the folks you meet there. Ive been training at athlon for about 3 months with Carmel. She has made it very easy to reach my goals. I have always had a hard time with sticking to a diet, but Carmel has made it easy to stick to it this time. Anytime I am craving something I know i cant eat, carmel is very helpful in finding a solution. For example, doing a burger with a lettuce wrap instead of the bun or natural honey instead of sugar. She is very encouraging in general, and genuinely wants you to achieve your goals. Lastly, she has a unique ability where she just knows when to be hard on someone or when to give a little bit of leeway. Overall, I have had a great experience with Athlon!

I’m not a gym person. I find them to be overwhelming and intimidating as someone who has never attempted muscle building. I came here on a whim because I was tired of feeling like garbage, and I figured that if I was going to feel that way I might as well look better. I've found Athlon to be a bit different from what I expect of a traditional gym - there’s less body builders and more people just trying to improve themselves, and the folks here will do everything in their power to help you accomplish those goals. Yes, getting personal training three times a week is expensive as hell, but it’s absolutely worth it if you are serious about getting yourself into shape and have no clue where to start. It's like a prescription, except I haven't yet been able to trick my health insurance into paying for it.
Taylor and Courtney are excellent trainers; knowledgeable and regimented when necessary, but personable and trustworthy at the same time.

Oak and staff are amazing at what they do. The program is well written focusing on a wide range of skills to improve strength, mobility, and cardiovascular health. The diversity of workouts keeps it interesting and introduces new movements almost every week. Ryan Joiner and the team at Athlon Fitness greatly improved my quality of life and helped me get back to doing the activities I love! I came to Athlon 2 years ago with chronic lower back pain from multiple spinal injuries, poor posture, leg length discrepancies and generally poor sleep. With a lot of hard work and constant support from Ryan I’m now in a much better place. My posture is much better, my walking gate is improved, I’m stronger than I have been in over 15 years and I’ve learned a lot from Ryan when it comes to body mechanics. While my back pain is not gone, it is more manageable and daily pain has been greatly reduced. I absolutely love coming to Athlon and I can't recommend it enough! I've been coming to Athlon for 8 months now and the only reason I'm leaving is because I'm moving out of the area and I'm hopeful to find a new place just like Athlon. Not only is the gym clean and well-maintained, but there's always plenty of equipment like racks, benches, and barbells to use as well as new and fun equipment like the sled and agility reaction lights, all of which you won't find at your corporate, crowded gym. Taylor has been an absolutely phenomenal personal trainer and I will thoroughly miss my sessions with her. My goals were to gain more confidence in weight training and learn proper lifting techniques as well as strengthen my hips and back since I sit all day for work. She has empowered me to feel better about myself and grow my weight lifting abilities at the gym. I have felt significantly better both physically and mentally because of her, the Athlon team, and the community. I no longer have pain in my hips when I do long hikes or back pain after work and it has been life changing. The personal training sessions are 100% worth the money and give you a new training program every 6 weeks, goal check-ins, and progress tracking. I will thoroughly miss my time at Athlon and I genuinely wish I could take Taylor and Athlon with me!

Octovio better known as Oak has been my personal trainer for a couple of years. I feel he focuses on what I need strength mobility flexibility. My programs are custom-made and we’re flexible enough during each section to alternate or switch them up to work on a specific problem that’s bothering me that day I can say I’m very impressed with his knowledge of the body of movement and how to work with specific exercises to improve the areas that need help
February 2023 My program continues to be refined for preparation of a hiking tour I am going on to the Sky Islands in SE Arizona. The trainers really know what they are doing. Oak and Taylor answer all of my questions, give me modifications when I need them, and have shown themselves trustworthy when it comes to leading me through workouts. I know I am in good hands with both of them. The group workouts are challenging in the sense that I am almost always learning something new and then put it into practice. As long as I am willing to put the effort in, I get a great workout every time I come in for a morning group class. I also like that Athlon has a wide array of equipment to use if I come in to do a workout on my own.

Hey everyone, here's an update on my training for circus at Athlon with Taylor. You may remember that my love of aerials and lack of studio led me to San Luis' Athlon and the trainer, Taylor. This week I finally made it back onto silks on a rig out back. My experience starting silks after time off has been frustrating and discouraging, but this time, after training for months with Taylor, I had fun. She gave me workouts that beefed up my ability to do pike ups, which helps with inversion, the hallmark of silk routines! Bringing my silks into Athlon helped my grip strength! Fnishers, or the last exercises in a workout, helped my stamina. Training at Athlon is working to keep my aerial strength active!!!!!

Athlon is the BEST gym on the Central Coast! This is not your typical work out or gym. I've never had trainers spend so much time helping me stretch, focus on increasing weight when lifting, and also working my mindset. The entire Athlon team is incredibly supportive and helpful! Let’s start with how I love circus arts: silks, straps, trapeze and juggling challenge and are simply super fun. When I found myself without coaching I started training at Athlon with Taylor and am delighted with the results. I’m doing my first pull-ups without a spot, have stronger hip flexors without them being cranky, can taste a handstand and back bend and feel all around stronger. I gave Taylor my goals and she gave me a program that works. Athlon really knows what they’re doing.

My wife and I are in our early 40's and have been going to Athlon for just over a year, working with several personal trainers over that span. We decided on Athlon because we wanted to support an honest local business during the pandemic while we got rid of our "desk bodies." Courtney has been our trainer for most of that time and we both think he's been excellent at really dialing in the improvements we've wanted to see while always making sure we're nailing it. That said every trainer we've witnessed at Athlon had been outstanding.
If you're looking for a gym that supports people of ALL ages and ALL fitness levels with a staff of professionals that are going to work with you, not at you, this is the place. After a year I can say I'm in the best shape of my life, doing things I never thought I'd be able to do at 42. My energy is through the roof, I sleep better, I think more clearly and I feel healthier now than I did as a teenager. If you think you might not be gym material, give this place a try. There is zero judgment at Athlon and I've seen people of all ages and all fitness levels training here. Again, they are always going to work to YOUR ability and YOUR personal goals here.

I was having back and neck pain and PT wasn’t working. I’d been a member at Athlon in the past and knew they could help me. I set up an appointment with Ryan the owner and he placed me with Oak, (Octavio Guerrero) as my trainer. What a huge difference working with Oak has been. He’s very knowledgeable in Kinesiology and using the right techniques, exercises and stretches to achieve better physical health. My mental health improved too as the pain subsided and I got back the energy I felt I lost.
Can’t say enough good things about Athlon and my experiences working with Oak following a 3 day a week program. He knows what he’s doing and works individually in the group with each of us making sure we’re doing what we need to do to achieve better health!

Had my first two Complementary training sessions with personal trainer Octavio this last week very pleased with my work outs. I have had training in the past at other gyms but not impressed not the right routines for over fifty out of shape guy don’t feel like dragging a tractor tire the first work out! Athlon has done a great job adjusting to these COVID times. Virtual classes have been added. There is a video workout library. The outdoor space has been set up for exercise. Athlon: where a rigorous workout is fun and you leave with a smile on your face. The group workouts are different every day, and they are developed based on scientific research, so you know you are getting state of the art training and fat sloughing. Who doesn’t want fat sloughing? You can tell the staff is dedicated by their enthusiasm and by the way most of them pay close attention to your form while you move through the exercises. And if you have injuries and can’t do one of the exercises they’ll offer a workaround/substitute.
Ryan , the owner, is also great with Helping you deal with pain and injuries. He helped me address my neck pain and headaches in ways that no other practitioner had . I had been to many, for decades.

I joined Athlon 6 weeks ago and I have been nothing but impressed; from the trainers, to the workouts, to the exemplary customer service (which I especially appreciate from having worked it). I have honestly never been a fan of group workouts but the way Athlon structures theirs - it works.
The trainers excel at analyzing the group as a whole and keeping the workouts intense for people of all fitness levels and offer a variety of modifications to most, if not all, proposed movements. I also love they start each training session with stretches and rolling muscle groups - which I think has been paramount to avoiding injury.
Its too early for me to post "results" yet but I FEEL the difference and that is enough to tell me positive changes are happening. I highly recommend giving them a try!

really excited about my joining ATHLON fitness group...for several reasons, one of the most important to me, turning 80 this year, was to regain not only some strength but put some body mass back on after it had slid off when i was not looking past couple years. was assigned a really neat gal who asked me what hurts and why and started working me out at a real slow pace so i would not get sore or achey working on all parts of the body, just a little here and there each visit, loosening up, stretching and repetitious work. had less cramps at night, started to see the gradual tightening of many areas of muscles and was standing up much straighter than before which helped my back. whenever we ran across an area that i was a little bit anxious about we simply moved on from that area no pressure, i set the pace there were a couple of simple exercises in areas i was concerned about we stopped and talked about them and either passed on them and left them for the future when my body was up to it or we simply said, nope that is not going to work for me as i have an injury there and do not feel like pushing it lot of simple and understated gain, good clear communication and i think how great that i found these people instead of fumbling around at a gym with a younger more athletic bunch. a real find for any age body i am thinking !

From the facility, to the staff, to the knowledge.. it has exceeded my expectations on all levels. In the past, I’ve joined my fair share of fitness places (yoga studios, kickboxing, home workouts, larger gyms, cheaper gyms, cycle, etc) and this is where I feel the most comfortable which is huge for me and my success!
I personally joined Athlon as part of my recovery from a rather large surgery and Ryan made me feel so comfortable to begin a workout plan that was suited to my needs, limitations, and goals. I absolutely LOVE training at Athlon and would give it more stars if I could! I've gotten incredible results working with the Athlon staff on my fitness and nutrition goals (down 25 lbs and 8% body fat). They've also made the process engaging, which has made it easier to maintain my progress and continue to improve.
A few things that make Athlon a stand-out in my experience:
1. There's an awesome community vibe. Trainers get to know you, which is so helpful for accountability and building a program/routine that works for your specific needs and lifestyle.
2. The staff is well-educated, well-read, and super nerdy about exercise and nutrition science. Trainers take care to explain why and how certain things work, which makes the whole experience more interesting.
3. Training at Athlon is well-rounded. I've improved my strength and cardio performance, but it's also been really useful and practical to spend time on mobility, balance, and coordination.
4. They'll help you tailor your program to your needs. When I got into rock-climbing, they showed me how to improve my grip strength and strength-to-weight ratio. Since recently injuring my foot, they've helped me modify exercises, work on mobility, and gradually get back up to speed.
I can't say enough good things about the quality-of-life improvements I've experienced as a result of working with the Athlon team. Mealtimes and food prep are way less stressful. I feel athletic enough to try out any fun new physical activity that sounds interesting (climbing, paddle boarding, etc.). Also, training has become a part of my routine that I actually look forward to—I'd always been annoyed by people who claimed to enjoy exercise, but I'm totally one of those people now.
If you're on the fence, give Athlon a try! Signing up was easily one of the best decisions I've made, and it's been worth every penny.

Athlon is an absolutely fantastic gym. They have a friendly, knowledgeable staff who are always willing to help. Athlon's clientele is equally nice and supportive. I have been going there for years and I've never felt judged or disrespected by anyone.
Their facility is always kept clean, and organized. This is an environment which is enjoyable to come work out in as weights are put in their proper places, and the equipment is clean. They have a nice cardio section, with well maintained machines and their Olympic lifting platforms are also well stocked with weights to satisfy any level. This is all in addition to equipment you'd find at any gym. From foam rollers, to kettle bells, to squat racks, Athlon has it all.
I've trained at Athlon first in the semi-private training group, then a basic membership, and finally as a current member of their group training program. Their service and commitment to their members is excellent at every tier. Every trainer and staff person I have interacted with is courteous, and makes sure your concerns are heard. I've hurt myself outside of the gym, and my trainer was happy to give me modified exercises so that I could continue working on my fitness while going through rehab.
I could go on and on about the benefits Athlon has had in my life, but I encourage you to go and check it out for yourself.

Rarely write reviews, but I lost 20 lbs in 3 months. Ryan and his team have and are coaching me though a life changing experience. I am stronger and lighter than I've been in 20 years. There is nothing like having someone who lives and breaths fitness holding you accountable. Don't get me wrong, all the hard work is being done by me. They make sure the exercises are done right and safely. Also, their approach is nothing like any "gym" I've been to, this is a combination of neurological retaining and fitness. I went to Athlon in preparation for hip replacement surgery. I wanted to increase strength in my legs and hips in hopes of an easier recovery. It worked! Andy was awesome and helped modify exercises to challenge me but not overdo the limitations I had due to some major arthritis in my hips. Well it's been about 6 months since I started at Athlon and I can honestly say that I have loved working out here and am very happy with seeing the results in my fitness level. Jasmine makes the workouts fun and challenging but also adapts and customizes the exercises to what my needs are. Came in after flying a red eye and driving from L.A. In rain and fog. Actually came from Kauai to specifically work with the owner Ryan Joiner since I have had chronic hip and knee problems and my nervous system a bit shot from trauma and stress. He has worked with me for over 20 years and knows functional fitness. He gave me a through consultation of my physical issues, took me through a few eye and coordination exercises, and before I knew it I was able to figure out my front squats and clings without issue. Athlon has everything you'd need for whatever your workout routine is and what your workout goals are. The flexibility of the facility is such as great selling point. They have your standard cardio machines, but also a free weight area with two complete sets of dumbells, up to 100 lbs. There's also three squat racks that double as bench press stations. Additionally, there's four deadlift/olympic lift platforms, as well as large open areas for bootcamp style workouts. Even during the busy times at lunch or after work, I've never once haven't been able to get an open squat rack or deadlift platform. As other reviewers have mentioned, the staff are super friendly and helpful, and the other gym goers are all friendly, courteous, and have good gym etiquette (they put their weights away)! Highly recommended!

After trying various 24 hour box franchise gyms, I found Athlon in 2014 and never looked back. I went with their monthly gym pass that allows you to use the facilities at your own pace but they also offer classes and 1 on 1 sessions. The really do an excellent job with providing a sample of all equipment to achieve a full body workout. Their entire staff is very knowledgeable and are ready and willing to help you with any questions you have. Their has been countless times where they have helped me critique my form on lifts to help me progress towards my goals. The camaraderie between the gym goers themselves is strong and very beneficial. This is the strongest and healthiest I have been in my life and I can definitely attribute that to being a member at Athlon.

For the first time in many years, I am feeling like a true athlete again.
Even though I have been playing goalkeeper in a recreational soccer league for a few years, my 42 year old body always felt like it had gone through the wringer after each game, and it took me days to recover. After just 5 weeks of training at Athlon, I notice a huge difference in my ability in the goal. I get off my line faster, I can kick/punt further, I can recover from saves faster, and I'm not left completely winded after a bout of activity.
At each session I learn something new about my body's limits - range of motion, strength, power, agility, visual training - all exercises are explained to me as to how each will enhance my abilities, and it makes my workouts a fun challenge.

I've got nothing but praise for this fitness program. When I started with a personal trainer at Athlon, I was 63 years old and about 70 pounds heavier than I should have been. I had practiced law for 33 years and was not exercising very much. I could not do a single pushup in a horizontal position and was prone to back problems.My trainer developed a personalized exercise and food program that worked extremely well for me and I have been working out 3 times a week ever since (about 3 and a half years, so far). I lost 64 pounds in 16 months and went a little lower before gradually regaining some of the weight (probably some of the gain was muscle, because I have improved strength in all areas). This has been a life-saver for me and I see many others who are making similar progress. They have a wide range of ages, both male and female, and a wide fitness range, including some competitive athletes at one extreme and people who started like I did at the other extreme. The trainers are great at modifying exercises to fit the capabilities of each trainee. The trainers are both male and female and all are kind, considerate, supportive, and (most importantly) knowledgeable, with degrees in kinesiology or nutrition. I highly recommend Athlon for anyone seeking to make a serious improvements in their well-being.

I have been going to Athlon for about 2 years now and love it. The trainers are all so helpful and truly care about helping you reach your fitness goals. When I first started at Athlon, I stuck to just using the machines. Eventually, I started to plateau and wasn’t seeing much in the way of the fitness improvements I was hoping to get. I decided to join the Elite Fitness group and have never seen my body transform faster than I did with this training program. Not only is the staff excellent, knowledgeable and fun, and 100% DEDICATED to helping you get the results you want, the clientele are all great as well. Everyone is so friendly and encouraging of each other. It really is a great facility all around.

Athlon Health and Fitness has an amazing staff and great equipment. Everybody is very helpful and brings an expertise that has come from a combination of experience and education. I particularly enjoy Angela Martin's classes for fast results as well as a very fun and enthusiastic environment.

Athlon was great to me during my workouts there. The staff are very friendly and professional. There are several pieces of accessible equipment which made it easier for me to improve my strength and cardiovascular fitness. My personal trainers, Ashley Fittz and Angela Martin, were very helpful, easygoing, and dedicated to developing an effective, customized workout program for me. I enjoyed working out with them and continue to benefit from the customized home workout programs they created for me.
