📍 City Sports Personal Training Members — Please Read!

I’m sharing this to warn others. Weeks ago, my personal trainer Liz physically turned in my medical letter stating I am unable to continue personal training for health reasons. Yet City Sports is still attempting to debit my account. 😤

I spoke with an employee named Teo (not sure of the spelling), who said a supervisor would contact me — but that never happened. The follow-through and customer care have been extremely disappointing.

If you ever need to pause or cancel personal training due to medical issues, be vigilant and monitor your billing. I am requesting that all future charges stop immediately and any charges after my medical documentation be refunded.

I have been dealing with this issue for weeks an I was paying $500 a month.

I'd say by far this is the worst gym I've ever been to as far as cleanliness. I can tell they don't have a 24 hour on staff cleaner in here like most upper class gyms. They have no towel service. They have zero spray bottles. And on top of that around the whole gym if somebody sweats all over something, you could quite possibly get hepatitis. Or any kind of infection. I mean the facility looks great, but the staff sucks. Nobody maintains this place. It would be a great gym. If they would have at least somebody here the whole time it's open keeping this place tiptop and clean. I used to go to another franchise of these gyms years ago, and I mean you had NBA players going there, they always had somebody cleaning constantly the whole time you were here, you had spray bottles and paper towels all over the gym facility so if someone stopped using a machine, you could literally spray it down and clean it with the paper towel before you sat down. I mean what Gym or I should say full service Gym would have zero Towel service and not even a one spray bottle or paper towels around the whole gym so you could keep yourself from getting any kind of infection. People sweat. I am an avid gym member and I have multiple memberships at different gyms. I come here because it's convenient closer to my house, but I go elsewhere regularly. Don't know if I'm keeping this membership. This is ridiculous. If I keep coming here for a while, I will keep adding photos and date them every time. I see something here.

Updates: 05/31/2025 bathrooms still a wreck. Also noticed there are no air filters in ANY of the air intakes throughout the whole gym. So everyone is breathing the same bacterial microbe infested air. Posting a few of a bunch of photos I took. Look for yourself. Dirt and dust all up in the vents. No filter.

I loved this gym don’t get me wrong. I was a member and did personal training with great personal trainers. But the moment I tried to get out the membership it was a living hell. I couldn’t afford the high gym membership fees along with the personal training which was a separate fee mind you. This gym proceeded to charge me for the next 2 months after I canceled, and I reported it as fraud immediately. Also to note, because I broke contract with the personal training by leaving early, I paid an additional $120 just to get out of it.

City Sports is my go-to gym—clean, spacious, and fully equipped. I love starting with a solid cardio session on the treadmills or bikes, then unwinding in their relaxing sauna. Today,
Was the worse day at the gym, I experience a moment of a lot of Violence. I get really worries because there are children and older person too who can get harm about this behaviors. This area should be a safety place for everybody in there. Hoping the management does something about this incident of today.

Online they have a 3 day guest pass you sign up for in addition with a waiver. I sign up for it, show up, and then “activate” it with Devon. They didn’t honor the guest pass by saying “the system wont process it at the end of the month, we could try all day but it wont work” & “a day pass costs $20” i understand they want to sign people up to make some money/commission, but why have the guest pass with a potential customer come in & have that kind of experience.

While this gym has great customer service, a working sauna, clean bathrooms and large spaces- they’ve got places to improve.
The front desk seems to let anybody in. My partner has a membership that allows one person to come in with them, and the front desk never questioned me, hasn’t asked my information, nothing!! How many people are walking in without proper precaution like this. (I have my own membership now) Also, the gym can be really busy at times- no surprise there; it’s only gym members don’t know how to properly share equipment. You see hogging, people saving equipment for a friend etc. Basically gym members without etiquette. Lastly, they can do better with machine maintenance. The layout of the machines doesn’t really make sense in some parts too, the place needs more LEG EQUIPMENT. Maybe some deadlifting platforms. Also, why are racks all in the corner facing eachother?

City sports has been declining in the last couple of months. Most of the equipment is broken and it’s not getting fixed despite multiple complaints from members. Theres no safety clips nor snap clips anywhere. When I tried to work out in the only machine that works, I was kicked out because it was designated as a trainer’s area. When I complained I was told to talk to the manger! This is ridiculous. I suggest you take you money somewhere else where you are respected as a member and get what you pay for!!

Once a vibrant center for athletic training, City Sports has fallen into a state of subpar facilities. The equipment has been out of service for over three weeks, leaving patrons with an embarrassing experience. This disrespect for their patrons is unacceptable.

I was visiting the area and only wanted to do a trial. The gym ended up charging me just under 100 dollars, they charged me for another month, and also charged me for an annual fee. I've called multiple times and have only gotten money back for the month charge.

As far as the gym goes. I went during peak hours, so obviously it was crowded. Overall equipment was okay and they did have a lot of space.

We signed up a free trial through their website, got a phone call and been told we can come in tonight to try it out. But when we arrive their staff told us can’t let us in because “it takes 48 hours to activate the free trial, the only way I can let you guys in is sign up a membership or pay $20.”

After read through their website and the email we got, there’s nowhere said the 48 hours activation time. I’m pretty sure he just made it up and did not want us to use the free trail pass for some reason.

POOP and ROACHES Again!
9/5/2024 - went to City Sports in Richmond today only to see diaper filling and poop in the pool! So of course this is at 5 AM in the morning. Had to turn around and go back home. The British swim people are awful and never insist their clients wear the correct swim diapers and make sure the pool is clean from poop before they leave. This is so disgusting and happens far too often this has been like the fifth time in a year. So disgusting! Next after 3 1/2 long months, there are still ROACHES in the men and women’s shower areas. They keep hiring nonprofessional people and it’s just not working. You can’t use raid roach spray and think the roaches will be gone because they won’t! They just come right back in a couple of hours. The person City Sports hired, has supposedly been there 3 times and no positive results. Enough is enough and it’s time they shut down the gym, and fumigate the place correctly in order to get rid of the ROACHES! Worst place ever, wish we had somewhere else to go.

Problem is, after the exterminator came, I haven’t seen not one DEAD ROACH! So who’s kidding who? Smh, truly disgusting and disappointing to constantly see ROACHES everywhere every day!

Richmond City Sports - Still ROACHES! I was told an exterminator came yesterday between 5 to 6 am, and there are still ROACHES! Please consider using a PR0FESSIONAL exterminator company! Not someone who obviously 🙄 doesn’t know what they are doing! Richmond, City Sports, should be closed down for two days, and the place should be fumigated professionally. In the locker rooms and both men and women shower areas. How long are you going to play this game? I have pictures. ROACHES the very next day, unbelievable!

Also, the shower close to the pool is really disgusting, pink and black mold, and mildew hasn’t been cleaned in days! Neither has the floors around the pool been cleaned. You can see bacteria forming so don’t walk on that nasty floor barefoot because you are certain to catch something!

6/24/24 - Richmond City Sports @ 5 am, Well now City Sports has ROACHES 🪳 I killed roaches last Thursday in the women’s shower and my husband killed roaches 2 days in a row! It was reported last week, but of course as usual NOTHING has been done. ROACHES are also swimming in the pool! Also as usual, the women’s shower area was filthy! How much longer do we have to put up with ROACHES and daily filth?? DISGUSTING and DISGRACEFUL! Nasty nasty place. Would rate a 0 if I could.

First off, the personal trainer Kyle B. gets 5 stars. Kyle helped me a ton by ensuring that I use proper lifting technique for big compound lifts as well as some smaller lifts. He is thorough and offered dietary advice as well as tips for better training and injury prevention. If I asked a question he didn't know the answer to, he would look it up and fill me in during the next training session we had. I highly recommend Kyle.

As for the gym itself, it's not bad, but for the membership cost it should really be better maintained; somewhat in terms of cleanliness (though the male janitor definitely tries) and definitely in terms of equipment and facility. It takes a while for stuff to get done, like machines that need repair or worn parts needing replacement can take weeks to be addressed. For months now there has been a big dent in the floor by the squat racks with orange tape on the ground around it to give warning. There is an apparent need for better management, but it isn't clear if this location's manager is negligent or if the corporate management doesn't care about this location.

I know after work times are peak times, but this is By far the busiest Gym I ever been to. From 2-830 on the weekdays you can expect majority of the machines to have 3+ people hovering over them mostly talking. They also do a swim school around 3pm which the pool was the main reason I joined. Thanks. Its pretty much fairly busy majority of the time though the weekends are better. But I did have to give it positive stars because the staff was not as pushy or sleazy as the Berkeley Gym, the gym is still reletively cleanish after all these years and the pool is actually pretty clean. I seen the Pool guy telling some kids to go shower before going in so good on them. But unless you are a cardio junky or like the dance room a lot, its pretty frustrating here.

The patrons at this gym are what make it bad. No one respects the equipment. City Sports in Berkeley has perfectly racked dumbbells every time I visit. The dumbbells at the Pinole location are strewn across the gym and never racked in their respective locations.
The patrons destroy the bathroom as soon as the doors open. I feel bad for the custodian he is a hard working sweetheart.

Not as clean as other local gyms despite charging a premium price. Manager blatantly lied about "not knowing" you could apply through ActiveFit and Direct to save about $20 a month, in an attempt to get me to pay more. He was rude when I didn't sign up through his offers and asserted he'd worked there for years and never heard of such a thing. Needless to say I walked in the next day with my $28/m membership vs their $50+ with $100+ signup fee. I joined City Sports about a year ago because I was looking for a pool to swim laps in affordably. Well, City Sports is affordable, but it's also the most disgusting pool I've ever been in. I'm embarrassed to say that I did it for as long as I did. I stopped using the hot tub pretty quickly. The last time I got out of the hot tub there was some gross white chunky stuff on my bathing suit. When I brought these things up to the staff up front, they were generally unresponsive. My final straw was two weeks ago—
I came in to swim and saw that the pool was pretty crowded. There was only one lane open, so I hurried to rinse off and grab it. As I'm rinsing off, a guy walks by me wearing all of his clothes, hair full of product, and just hops into the water in that open lane.
I've seen folks dip their sweaty, unwashed bodies into the water a million times, but this was just too much.
Clearly, I'm bonkers because I decided that I really needed a workout and to just get in anyway. After two laps I had to get out. There was dirt and debris floating around in the pool. A bloody bandage, and just so much...gunk!!! I tried to bring it up with the girl at the front, but she literally just looked at her nails the whole time. I asked if she could at least tell me when the pool would be cleaned next and she rolled her eyes and said she didn't know.
After learning about those two people who died after taking a hot tub in Richmond, I realized it's definitely not worth the health and safety risks to come to City Sports.
I encourage anybody to seriously reconsider before swimming here.

The gym is nice but that’s the catch… I use to bring my friends by just adding them to my guest pass without a problem but now they require you to sit down and go through a whole presentation while they try to up sale you on different packages which people on a guest pass just want to work out but yet they have to go through an unnecessary process… it’s a bummer to because it never was like that prior to August 2023.. And they say it won’t work because they need to “activate” the guest pass by going through a schedule appointment 😂 which is a lie because the old system was never like that so there is no valid excuse for it. It’s just a scheme to advertise and up sale folks who wouldn’t otherwise care unless they wanted to inquire more information on what the establishment offered. To be honest ever since I started my membership off and on since 2021 the whole concept of the “for profit” mindset city sports displays hasn’t changed even with new management. I will give credit where it is due in saying I’ve had some of the best basketball runs at city sports and I hate to cancel my membership for good but it’s just ridiculous the way they runs things. Their pretty stingy on membership cancellation too… Planet fitness and all the other gyms I’ve been to (which is over a dozen at this point) don’t push it on potential members unlike city sports does. If you’re looking for basketball runs 24 hour fitness has great potential for that! Otherwise from that I hope that city sports reconsiders a lot of their outreach approaches.

the sellers, they contacted me to offer me a promotion (it is not the first time that I have been deceived that they scam me) which was a family package 2 adults and two children for $79 per month, initial payment of $25, I asked several times to the seller if it was not a lie, he told me no, I asked him until when is this promotion, but he told me this week, I asked him several times it has to be today Sunday August 6 he told me no that in the week, I told him it's fine I will arrive on Tuesday, today Tuesday the 8th, I arrive and he tells me that they signed for him that the promotion was only for Sunday, I told him I asked you several times and he came up with the excuse that he has been working for 5 days and that he was wrong, I understand that he has 5 days and it's new but he represents and is the face of "city sports" As a seller it was the fault of city sports, it's not the first time I've been scammed in this gym since January I'm waiting for an offer, I always go in with my nephew but I want to bring to my family and this gym is always tricked and scammed, the manager did not do anything to help, he only offered me to pay $450 for my family while what they offer was $75 a month is a GREAT SCAM THE PROMOTIONS😡😡😡😡

Joined a couple of months ago, my impression is mixed.
Good: staff mostly helpful, lots of equipment, no parking problems, bright, open feeling.Clientele is mostly younger hispanic, friendly. I feel comfortable going there as a single woman.
Not so good: zumba classes are very crowded, parking area is not well lit further from entrance, pool water seems dirty, burned my eyes for two days after swimming, I'm scared to swim there again. Wipe stations containers empty. No zumba gold classes, please add classes for silver and fit program.

I'm going to start this review by saying, the gym itself is a good gym, the staff is friendly, the machines are in working conditions. Although...

I give it a 2 because they're housekeeping, in the women's locker room is terrible, this been going on for months. Even when there was a lady working there, there would be missing paper towels or toilet paper, or garbage on the floors. Also the maintenance in the locker room Is a bit a long wait. I remember when the bench in the sauna was broken, it took them weeks for that to get fixed, or when the toilets got broken also took a while.

I understand that the customers of the gym can also keep the locker clean by throwing their garbage away, but obviously some don't do that. The floors are definitely dirty, I wouldn't walk barefoot on that like I seen some ppl do. The lockers are also very dirty, have hair or other crums inside.

I hope they can get this resolved soon, It's gross to see that locker like that.

Staff was more worried about getting commission from selling me a membership than they were about actually answering my questions. I guess i will keep using my friends guest pass because the gym itself is nice. But the unprofessional and unwelcoming staff is a deal breaker for me. The person helping me kept insisting that i have someone send me $100 so i could sign up right then and there. I was using a supposedly “free 3 day pass” so i wasnt planning on purchasing a membership today and i would wait for my next paycheck. Worst part was that i wasnt allowed to stay for my work out. What was the point of a “Free Pass”?? They tried to get me to pay $20 for a day pass…

TLDR: I really like the gym but the staff sucks.

I have been going to City Sports since March. I signed up for the personal training program and work with Gal P. It has been such a great experience to work with Gal. He listens to me, challenges me, and pushes me to keep going to reach my weight goals. I need the accountability to keep going and to stay motivated. Every time I have needed something, the staff has always been supportive and helpful. Since going, I am learning how to lose in a healthy way. I am down 25 + pounds and 2 sizes since I started. I strongly recommend the training program. Also, the new manager is making a huge positive difference in the way the gym runs.

I wanna give 0 star and it’s just too much. 3 incidents happened to my baby at the kids club while I was working out and they never told me and I had to find out from others or his brother. The babysitter just sit down and don’t watch the kids, not even the little ones. They are very unprofessional and rude when I was complaining about my baby injuries which happened there. I absolutely don’t recommend this gym, especially if you want to take your kids. The staff literally yelled at a 10 year old for a minute and calling him liar and poor kid was just crying.

I was gifted a week free pass at the Vallejo location. I called the Vallejo location to see if I can redeem the pass at the location closest to me which is Richmond, and was told I could. When I called Richmond, the rep took my name & phone number, to pull up the pass, then puts me on the phone with Daniel, who basically says forget the free pass and come purchase a new membership.... When I redirect the conversation to redeeming the pass I was gifted, he says I have to go to Vallejo to get the pass, then come there. But I won't be eligible for new member deals.
I called back the gym in Vallejo and again I was told I can just redeem it in Richmond. The fact that 2 City Sports are not consistent with how to simply redeem a gifted pass is a problem. Not being able to redeem the pass at the location near me makes absolutely no sense. And Daniel, seems to be very dismissive towards customers that he cannot force into listening to his sales pitch. Genuine customer service goes a long way. This guy seems careless...
Why offer free trials, passes/ gifts if they will be completely disregarded?
Daniel is like "it doesn't matter if you like it, spend your money ". Lol

My mom went out to check out the gym as she was considering to join as a family member under my plan. She met with Daniel S and she made it clear she just wanted to check the gym. She was shown the gym and at the end Daniel tried convincing her to sign up then and wrote the prices on a piece of paper. After she told him she was just there to see the gym and was planning to join under my plan, his tone changed. He took the paper from her and ripped it up and told her what I was doing was "illegal". I am not sure what type of training City Sports did for him, but this is not consistent with what I have dealt at other city sports. I highly suggest to their upper management to give him a review and see how he presents himself and the company to potential new members, very unprofessional and rude. Definitely makes me question recommending city sports to other people.

Le doy 3 estrellas al establecimiento, pero lamentablemente tuve mala experiencia con Marcus entrenador personal no es amable y además es muy irresponsable… fuera de eso el establecimiento está bastante grande la piscina, el sauna y los locker muy bien organizados y amplios. 50% de los empleados no tiene amabilidad ni una forma decente para dirigirse a los miembros del gimnasio el otro 50% totalmente lo contrario..

I like it cause the gym is big and spacious. Bball court and swimming pool inside! They have a sled and several row machines. Daily housekeeping which is great compared to 24hr Fitness. Downside, people don't put away their weights correctly, and leave weights in thr studio or scattered around the gym. Although there is housekeeping, the studio and bball floors can be dirty for several consecutive days. Would be cool if the gym had more member interactions like appreciation or something. Im sure there's a budget for member retention!

My review is based on the pool. I have a back injury and swimming seems to be the only thing I can do as far as workout that's not painful.

The pool isn't regulated by anyone and is only 3 lanes. People come to play around instead of working out. A lot of times your workout will get interrupted by kids fooling around in the lane you're swimming in. Other times, you're waiting a long time for a lane to open up.

I recommend the YMCA for swimming. If this pool was properly regulated then it would be bearable.

Something has clearly changed for the better at this gym now. It's gotten a lot better recently, whether it's because of new management or new owners. Only issue now is that you should make that TRAINER ONLY SPACE/AREA accessible to EVERYONE, as I know a lot of people enjoy doing plyometrics or cardio in that space including myself.

It has all the equipment you will ever need and it's pretty big and spacious compared to other small sport clubs. Besides all the equipment for weight training and Cardio they have a lot of rooms for dance and Zumba classes as well as a basketball court and a swimming pool. I have personally not used it yet but they also have a sauna which is pretty cool and I will use it one of these days but I usually just go to lift weights, either way I would really recommend this gym.

I like the facility, it is pretty big and clean but the jacuzi looked dirty. They will call you and call you a bit too much to get you to join. The personal trainers will come up to you during your workout to try to get you to join them. I was going to get a personal trainer there but when I told him I was going to wait til my income increased, he started to go on for about 40mins about how obese people were the first to die during covid and how fat people should invest in their health or risk having cancer that they will deserve if they dont change. He said some other insulting, crazy things but point is he should not talk to anyone like that. He obviously had some issues and anger inside. I stopped going there because I felt uncomfortable.

This is a review for the poor service given to me time and time again. It appears they do bare minimum training on how to speak to guest and what actual customer service is.Save your money and do not get a membership at this gym. The staff is terrible and they do not care at all guest safety!!

Yesterday (01/25/22) at 6:00pm a trainer by the name of Marcus, decided that it would be okay to take weight away from me, give attitude, threaten me to move, and proceed to push the sled onto my feet. Had Marcus simply stated that he needed the area and that it was reserved for those doing training I would have moved willingly. But, to be bullied out of equipment and space and then assaulted with equipment is not okay.

This was an experience I never needed to happen. I do not feel safe at this facility and demand action be taken against the trainer who assaulted me.

Great gym for parents with small children. They offer a kids club for a small additional fee. Big selection of weights for someone doing weight training. Large gym doesn’t seem to be as crowded as it’s competitor from across the freeway. Has a pool, jacuzzi and sauna (currently under construction), Cycle room and dance room
