East Bay Pro Fitness is proud to be offering private, in-studio personal training and at-home customized exercise solutions to the Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito and Kensington communities.
Our goal is to provide safe, individualized exercise programming based on outstanding service, professionalism, and experience in the fitness industry. We specialize in strength training, weight loss and post-rehab exercise training. All of our systems are built upon progression and quality functional movement.

Matt is wonderful to work with. I have trained with him for the past year or so. He always challenged me but made sure as we worked with equipment that was new to me or heavier weights we were working safely. His gym is so clean and well organized. He adds new equipment thoughtfully and really works to make sure there is a variety of equipment and exercises used in a session. I've enjoyed working with Matt so much and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a personal trainer or to work on achieving personal fitness goals.

I have really enjoyed working with Matt and getting back into a fitness routine over the last ~6 months.
I can really tell the difference in my strength and balancing skills, even as a pretty athletic guy to start with. Heβs really been able to push me and guide me through increasingly challenging lifts, but never in a way thatβs left me feeling completely wasted after a session.
Updating to add that over the last few months, Matt has been helping me get my home gym setup and build a personal routine to supplement the one I have with him!
This was a big goal for me as I started with him, but felt too daunting to take on alone.

I would highly recommend East Bay Pro Fitness. I started training with Matt about 6 months ago and today I feel so much better. I am 58 and before i started, I was feeling run down all of the time and not even able to keep up with my wife with gardening tasks. Since starting with the training, I have achieved much better core strength, balance and endurance. I have lost weight and look better too :)

i have been working with Matt for several years. I started with him to improve my balance and overall fitness. He is experienced and very knowledgeable, able to modify exercises when arthritis flares or some other pain occurs so I can keep going. During a time when I had foot and shoulder surgery, Matt planned a routine that worked within my physical therapy program to help me stay appropriately active. Highest recommendation!

Matt is the best personal trainer I have ever had. Over thirty years in various gym companies Iβve used their staff and sometimes had additional independent sessions. They do not compare well to the excellent attention and thoughtful eye Matt brings to my weekly hour long sessions. He understands the body mechanics, focuses on the variety of muscle groups that are required and is successful in building both recovery and integrated body improvement. I highly recommend Matt for excellent results.

Matt is a very talented trainer who can work with all levels of fitness. I feel very lucky to have found him through the East Bay Pro Fitness website. He's a joy to work with as he mixes up the exercises and we never have a tedious session. I am an older person (80 years) with some debilitating auto immune nerve and muscle conditions. We had to start at ground zero and we've completed 30 sessions now. He has gotten me moving and feeling better as well as stronger in my arms, trunk and legs. Each one has been very useful and inspires me to work out at home. He is patient, kind, intelligent and clear - he knows an immense amount about how bodies work, having been a gymnast for many years. Iβve learned a lot about proper posture and movement from him.. So thanks Matt for all you've given me. I plan to keep going for a long time.

I have worked out with Matt for a few more than 20 sessions in 2021 and have been impressed at the variety of activities that he introduces. His approach fits my style perfectly in that he does not preach any fad diets, but instead sticks to the simple principle of eating a balanced and healthy diet and increasing activity will provide results (I can even keep beer in my life with this principle). Matt is very flexible and we workout part of the time in his home gym and part of the time in the park. Matt has state of the art equipment, but mixes in a lot of exercises that I can do at home. I have come to look forward to the "good" sore muscles the following day to really understand how effective our sessions are as a full body workout. I cannot recommend Matt enough if you are looking for a trainer that will keep the sessions fun, but really effective.

I have been training for over 50 years. Several of those years have been with Matt. The results from Mattβs coaching have been excellent. Each session with Matt is unique and effective. I especially like the way Matt mixes up the exercises for each session. Confusing the muscles with an array of different exercises is something I look forward to during my sessions with Matt. As I said, Iβve been in the fitness game for decades. Based on my experience, I would say you too can realize your fitness goals if you hire Matt as your trainer.

Matt is a knowledgeable trainer with a keen sense of his clients' needs and abilities. I have worked with Matt for over three years. Throughout that time, I have had a variety of fitness goals - from supporting a rigorous yoga practice (flexibility, core stability, even handstands!) to weight training with a focus on strength/muscle development. Matt has been able to provide me with the right amount of coaching and support through all of it! He is the type of trainer that pushes you appropriately and also listens thoughtfully to accommodate any pain or injury.
I highly encourage training at his location if you are able. It is impeccably clean with lots of brand new equipment.
Finally, Matt is just an all around great human. He is down-to-earth, easy to talk to, a great communicator, and an honest business person.

I have been training with Matt for several years and have come to rely on him for always choosing the right exercises when it comes to helping me with back and shoulder issues. I can say that I haven't had any back problems for over 3 years now (since I started working with Matt) and I attribute this directly to his attention to detail associated with my back issues (my shoulder problem is more recent and we are working on it)! Matt has an excellent understanding of human anatomy and will work with you to maximize your training goals, whatever they may be. My balance and stamina have also showed remarkable improvement. I have really appreciated his attention to detail in how I perform various exercises. He is very attentive to your form and will make corrections until you get the most out of it. I can't tell you how many times these corrections (often what seem to be minor to me) have led to a huge gain in what I get out of the exercise. Matt is personable and easy to talk with with! I can't say enough good things about Matt and East Bay Pro Fitness.

Matt Schwey is the trainer with East Bay Pro Fitness. He has a broad background in fitness training with people of all ages. I have worked with Matt for some time and appreciate his knowledge of body mechanics and the importance of position when working on specific exercises. As an active senior, sometimes its hard to find activities that don't aggravate old injuries or create new ones. Matt is a master at working around my issues with arthritis and tendonitis. Plus, he's an easy-going, pleasant person who is able to move my program along without making it boring or overwhelming. My goal is to maintain and build a strong body for the sports and activities I love: swimming, biking, hiking, sailing and back-breaking gardening, and those challenges that I have faced--I breezed through a hip replacement because of the strength he developed in that joint prior to surgery. I especially appreciate his focus on alignment and position during every exercise. I highly recommend Matt.

Matt has been my personal trainer for 3 years now and each time we meet it's a brand new experience! I never can predict
what exercises we will be doing on any given day, it's always changing and doesn't get old or boring! Because of our work together I am stronger, have better balance and coordination and endurance, all very important for me heading into my mid-sixties! Since the pandemic my husband now joins us. I have been doing weight training for the past 14 years. Recently I have begun training with Matt, working in his new studio which is clean, safe and well equipped. I am impressed with Matt's knowledge of anatomy and ability to explain what your muscles are doing and where they need to be strengthened. I appreciate his ability to communicate this in language that anyone can understand. I NEVER write reviews, but I feel like this needs to known!
Workouts are easy right? Wrong! Changes are if you're doing by yourself you're doing it wrong.
When I first met Matt I was convinced I could Squat and do Dead-lifts properly but I was so wrong. I was literally starting to injure myself and had no idea. I workout for longevity and by hurting myself of course it'd defeat the purpose.
Been trained by Matt now for few months and really feel the difference not only while lifting but my overall confidence.
Not only I highly recommend East Bay Pro, but I'm a huge fan their work.

I have been training with Matt for over seven years now.. through foot surgery, a broken wrist, long vacation breaks, and other life moments. He is an excellent trainer who always knows how hard to push, and how to "restart" after a layoff, whether it be from an injury, or vacation. He varies the routines, incorporates functional fitness into strength building.. and is welcoming and encouraging. I have been training at gyms for over twenty years now, and am more likely to injure myself by pushing too hard when alone. I have NEVER been injured on Matt's watch! He is an extremely trustworthy and competent individual, and he works well with people of all ages and fitness levels.
