The best thing I've ever done for my horse! I highly recommend Form Is Function to all equestrians. Coach Eric Kenyon has guided my journey to supple strength, flexibility, and balance. My horse is moving better because I can ride her better, not just physically but with greater confidence and having more fun. We're also having a lot of fun at liberty, jogging along together and exploring complex choreography in our dance. Eric designed a program specific to my horsemanship goals and my limited availability, and has worked with me to make adjustments when life got lifey. [Full transparency - I also left a more general review under my full name, but I really want horse lovers to find this amazing program so I am adding this review from my horsegirl account as well.]

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Transformative Training Program with Coach Eric
Trust the process that Coach Eric guides you on and you will be amazed with the results. For the first time in my life, I've found a strength training program that is customized to my body and my needs.

I went into the program with concrete physical goals - reducing pain in my shoulder as well as starting to learn how to properly lift heavier weights. Now, six months in, not only have a reached my goals, but I've exceed them. My shoulder pain is gone, and is structurally improved and strengthen so that I am confident about using my shoulder without fear of aggravation. I went from barely being able to lift a 45 lb barbell to most recently a 115 lb deadlift - and I believe that's just the beginning! Additionally, I'm better able to do daily tasks better such as hiking, swimming and gardening.

I travel often for work, and Coach Eric was very flexible in scheduling and also creating a program that worked for me while I was gone - and as an added bonus - improving my physical well-being so that I did not have pain as a result of travel.

As a person who has received training in leadership coaching, in my opinion Coach Eric is much more than a fitness coach. His style and approach to partnering with you to break through limiting beliefs, patterns and behaviors is powerful. What I've learned about myself through working with him has been priceless.

**Would I recommend?** Absolutely, without hesitation. Don't be intimidated by the structure of the program or the classes - it is not what you will be used to, and that is actually a really good thing. Invest in yourself and you'll be grateful you did.

Working with Coach Kenyon has been one of the most meaningful and valuable experiences in my life. I came to him with mysterious body pain in my hip and back which had been with me for numerous years and have increased after having my second child. I was feeling rather worried that I would not be able to play with, lift, hold and altogether engage physically with my children while they're young. After just a couple of days of following Coach Kenyon's assignments my lower back pain was virtually gone. After completing his program, the pain was completely gone. I feel like I learned how to be with my body and a whole new way that is sustainable and intelligent. Most importantly, my 5-year-old daughter has definitely noticed the Improvement and makes tear jerking comments about how I can pick her up more and play with her better since going to see Eric.
Priceless.

Form is Function achieves results.
In the spring of 2023 I went in search of a strength trainer for my teen. It was important to me that he work with someone who understood his specific athletic goals and could help with functional strength and teaching him about his body, not just someone who could get him big muscles in the gym. I sifted through many recommendations and spoke with trainers that did not fit this criteria before finding Eric Kenyon. I knew it was a great fit from the first meeting as it was apparent his understanding of my sons specific needs were far superior than that of an average personal trainer at an average gym.
In 6 weeks my son was faster and stronger and more explosive. In 6 months he was a whole new athlete. Nearly 2 years later he is still making gains. He has gained over 30lbs of muscle without sacrificing speed. His strength and mobility have improved exponentially. His work with Eric has given him a solid strength and conditioning foundation that he will take with him as he moves on to college and professional athletics, as well as a competitive edge at every level of sports in which he has participated.
I could not recommend Form is Function more highly. One size does NOT fit all. Eric Kenyon will customize a strength and conditioning program for your unique needs and you will not be disappointed in the results achieved.

I have been working with Eric Kenyon at Form is Function for just under a year now, and am so happy I signed up. I came to Eric with some pretty debilitating sacrum, hip, and neck pain from sports and car accident injuries sustained over 20 years ago. Prior to seeing Eric, I had worked with many other modalities and improved my pain by about 75-80% overall, but would still suffer from some extreme pain cycles, typically in the autumn each year. I am in the "I have tried everything" group of people, and tend to be very sensitive and prone to pain flare-ups with physical practices. The "no pain no gain" and "push yourself to failure" types of coaches that are prevalent out there simply don't work, and throw me into worse pain cycles than ever before.

I was skeptical that I would ever be able to find a physical practice that would work for my body other than my spinal release yoga practice, but my pain this past fall was worse than it has been in many many years, and I was feeling my strength and resiliency diminish. I'm 45 and mama to a 5 year old very physically strong daughter and I really needed help so I could keep up with her! I signed up for the free consult with Eric after a friend recommended him, and we ended up talking for almost 2 hours about my history, my goals, and Eric's approach. I really appreciated that he was excited about my goals being very real-world focused, including being able to get up/down from the floor more easily to play with my 5 year old daughter, being able to keep up with my daughter, possibly coaching her in sports, getting back to rock climbing, and reducing pain and healing my injuries as much as possible.

I signed on with a 5 month beginner package (longer due to my injuries), which was a sizable investment, but which I have found to have been worth it. My 5 months extended out to 7 or 8 months (without any extra cost) due to some extended travel and ensuring that we hit my guaranteed targets. It felt slow going at first, but I truly appreciated that, because if something was painful at all, we would stop, adjust, or do something different. There is absolutely none of the just push through the pain mentality here at all. And as a result, over time, my pain reduced, and I got stronger.

One day, my 5 year old asked for a piggy back ride from downtown Nevada City back up the long hill to our house. Normally, I would have been able to last a block before being too exhausted to continue and/or being in pain. This time, I made it all the way up the hill back to our house with her on my back, and had zero pain, felt strong doing it, and although I was a little out of breath, didn't feel completely wiped out. This was HUGE. I wasn't breaking any crazy personal records with weights, but I was getting stronger, with more stamina, and more resilience in a real life situation, and I was able to keep up better with my daughter, a key goal of mine.

I started to find myself not triple guessing whether I could pick up and carry something heavy or awkward without injuring myself or participate in an activity without injuring myself. For years I had been constantly having to play mental math on how much my body could tolerate to try to avoid aggravating injuries. To suddenly feel strong and resilient and capable without calculating risk for every single thing was incredible.

Since then, I've gotten stronger and stronger. I'm able to do more and more varied exercises, some with large weights, some with small weights, some with no weights. And at times, an old injury flares up, and I work with Eric to back off, to only do the things that don't cause pain or that support my healing, and then I slowly add things back when it is appropriate to do so. He has been an invaluable guide in helping me push myself to do things I didn't think were possible for me, but also prevent me from overdoing it.

I've learned a lot and continue to learn a lot from Eric Kenyon in my now 3x weekly classes (more like private instruction in a group). I'm so grateful, and I highly recommend working with him!

Form is Function is the best fitness program I've ever participated in. Eric is an attentive, educated, and passionate coach. He knows every students needs and is excellent at encouraging students to not only meet but exceed their goals. I always look forward to training and intergarte what I learn in my everyday life. I can't recommend this program highly enough. It'll help you meet and exceed your goals. It truly changes how you feel and addresses pesky injuries that just won't seem to heal.

Eric is dedicated to his craft, his continuing education and most importantly, coaching his students to meet and exceed their goals. Eric helped me gain mobility after being born with a deformed hip. He's an excellent instructor and I find myself looking forward to training. He's attentive and respectful and also knows when to encourage students to push themselves. The classes are a safe and comfortable space. I am constantly using the movements I learn in my everyday life. I can't recommend FIF/ training with Eric highly enough. It'll change your life.

Form is Function is the most effective fitness program I've ever found, in 30 years of trying all the things. Eric Kenyon is a compassionate, knowledgable coach who is always able to adapt your program for your specific goals. Working with Eric and FiF has healed my old injuries and prevented new injuries. I noticed within the first month that I was significantly stronger, even "just" carting groceries around or doing chores in the barn. My joints feel a lot better and my balance and posture are stabilized. I have increased capacity for all the athletic activities I love to do -- riding and playing with horses, hiking with dogs, taking a trail run, kayaking and swimming at the lake, etc. The FiF community is so supportive of each other's individual goals and journeys. I highly recommend the program for all ages, whether you're a pro athlete or a regular person who wants to lead a stronger, healthier, happier life.

I have benefited greatly from my physical training at FIF with Eric Kenyon and am grateful for the experiences and improvements I have made in my physical fitness and resilience to injury with his help. I have had some predisposition to joint injuries over the past decade especially with my low back, that started after my first child was born. In most recent years, I had gotten to a place where I was living in some cautious avoidance of having a low back flare up, because those injuries would derail my life for weeks, requiring scheduling physical therapy sessions and taking time off activities that I love doing, just to try to get back to baseline again. When I wasn't in pain, I would do pilates or crossfit type classes or home workouts with no clear positive outcomes towards physical resilience, and occasionally I would just end up with another injury setback from something I did pushing myself too hard or doing something with bad form in a group exercise class, which was always so disappointing. When I started training with Eric, I admit it almost felt like the things we were doing were almost too easy or pain-free to work. However, after some months I could tell I was quite a bit stronger, and over a year later I am undeniably so much stronger than I was, and stronger in a very functional way. I feel much more resilient to injury than I had before starting with his coaching. I occasionally still have some minor flare ups in my low back when I overdo something (like an overly long day of intensive yardwork, or sitting way too long on a long travel day, or similar), but these events have been less frequent, much less painful, and have resolved much more quickly (and without requiring any physical therapy) since I started working with Eric. He has also given me a lot of tools that I use when I do experience some discomfort to help flare ups resolve quickly. Also, the workouts he leads me through in his small group classes are always completely tailored to my specific situation and how strong and capable I am feeling that day, and he does that for each person who comes to class. Top two rules in his physical practice are no fear and no pain (though some muscle soreness after a good workout does not count, that's good pain), and it turns out for me that is a good recipe for success and for wanting to continue training with Eric.  Thanks Eric!

Last year I decided I was going to actively fight the slow decline of my aging body. 2023 was to be the 'year of self-care' and at the top of the list was to get in shape...but how?...where to start?

I wanted to do it right this time. I had tried joining gyms [and the personal training sessions that came with new memberships]. I had tried online classes, and in-person classes. Nothing felt right, so nothing stuck. And this time I wanted real results that I could see and feel, quickly. And I wanted to make sure those results didn't go away if I went on vacation for a couple weeks.

I had seen the Form is Function website the previous year, but had hesitated assuming the lack of information about the cost meant it was too expensive. But in January, a year after seeing the site the first time, I found myself back there and clicked on 'Book an Appointment' to schedule a 60 minute consultation with Eric. It was free so, at the least, I would get 60 minutes worth of discussion on my physical condition and habits and hopefully some feedback from a professional, which is a substantial amount of time. He gave me even more than 60 mins, and a follow-up call. Again, I was hesitant about cost because he has you commit, and what if I didn't like it, or couldn't figure out how to make it work with my schedule, but something about Eric's approach to what is important, smart, safe, achievable, and good in fitness made sense to me...and this was the year of self-care, so I signed up! And I'm so glad I did.

The initial commitment was to sign up [and pay] for 3 months, a beginner's period. Each session I got noticeably stronger, breaking personal records at almost every visit. I had to travel a lot and missed sessions, but Eric didn't measure 3 months with a calendar, he measured it by number of sessions, so I never felt like I was missing out or losing money on my investment. Not only did the periodic neck and back pain that I had considered to be my new normal gone away, I now do things I couldn't even do as a teen. I have achieved goals I almost had stopped believing were possible.

I just finished my first 3 months [chronologically 6 months due to my traveling] and have more strength, and confidence in that strength, that I had expected. Everything else I had tried made me feel like a failure, like I wasn't trying hard enough, working diligently enough, doing it right. I have never felt anything close to that here...quite the opposite. I have a pride in what I can do and how I got there, which is invaluable. Now it's time to come up with new goals and blow those out of the water ;-)

When I first met Eric in mid-January, my goals related to overall fitness and improved health. Although I knew I needed to lose weight, I saw that as a side benefit, and I wasn’t counting on it. Honestly, I didn’t believe I could lose weight, and I didn’t want to set myself up for failure.

Although I prided myself on eating healthy foods, the truth was that ice cream and baked goods had been my Achille’s heel for years. I couldn’t resist a fudgy brownie or mocha almond fudge ice cream, not to mention the sugar lurking in many other foods on my ‘healthy’ diet. Life had been stressful, and I loved delicious foods! Eating was my emotional crutch.

About five weeks in, Eric presented me with my eating plan to help me reach my goals, and I knew it was time to get real and clean up my act! Starting in March, I cut out all foods containing sugar, substitutes for sugar, and foods that quickly turned into sugar. I eat as much as I want of the foods on my list, and I don’t have to count calories or track what I eat, thank goodness!

To date, I am 24 pounds lighter. As I’ve released excess fat, I’ve increased muscle mass with the daily exercises and strength training I’ve been doing for the past five months. I am almost 5 inches slimmer in both my hips and waist.

I now look in the mirror, and I recognize myself! I’m proud of myself, yet more important is the change I see in my overall health and well-being. I needed Eric’s expertise and coaching to get where I am today! Thank you!

I am so grateful to have found Form is Function and Eric! I arrived a year ago pretty disheartened with the fitness culture and my own fitness journey. Even though I enjoy exercise, it felt like a full-time job to figure out how to stay fit and prevent injury as I age. I have practiced many different fitness modalities (crossfit, fitness clubs, pilates, yoga). This is the first one that has felt simple, clear, and effective. I experienced results at FiF immediately--in my mood, my confidence, and my strength. I have retained excellent mobility without all the tricks and recipes and overthinking. Pain that I had in my right hip and right foot has disappeared. I have osteopenia but my bone density has not declined; I fully expect it to increase in the next couple of years as I solidify my practice at FIF. Eric helped me to get clear on my fitness goals and the process to get there. I want to be able to camp and hike with my family for decades to come, I want to continue my acro yoga practice and remain injury-free; I want to garden and care for my land into my 80s and beyond (I'm 58 now.) As with most people, my schedule is quite full (full-time job, ailing mother, children, land to steward); I am thrilled to know I can accomplish my goals with a mere three hours a week training. I had always thought I needed to be at it hours a day most days a week. Actually, so many of the things I used to believe about fitness I have (thankfully) learned are not true. I can honestly say that my time with Form is Function has been life-changing in the best way and I give them my highest recommendation.

It's really all in the name- Form is Function will help you make your form more functional and your function more formidable. I'm not an athlete, don't have many fitness goals other than staving off the inevitable entropy, being fit enough to move about as needed: gardening, kayaking, the occasional hike or skate. I like to not be in pain . I originally took to kettlebell practice over 10 years ago after a bout of shoulder bursitis. I liked my instructor and his practice helped me. During Covid when our practice space closed I slacked off a little until i found Form is Function. From across the country, via video , in my own living room I benefitted from the astute perceptive teachings of Eric and his modest adjustments to techniques I had been practicing. Frankly the results were immediate and kind of astounding. you get out what you put in to it and Eric is extremely encouraging of one's efforts and shares in your joy of movement improvement. Online class was sometimes one on one and more frequently involved local folks in studio and others scattered throughout the country. It provides a supportive community and you can watch others attain and surpass their own wellness goals. During that time i sustained a non-workout related reactivation of an old leg injury- Eric's knowledge and intelligent questioning enabled me to continue working out in a safe manner that did not cause any pain or lengthen healing time. Highly recommend to the casual and professional athlete, anyone hoping to get back in shape after an injury , and my fellow slackers, wherever you are, in studio or from a completely different part of the country.

The knowledge and experience I've gained working with Eric Kenyon at Form is Function have truly created a roadmap for healthy aging. My bone density has remained the same for the 7 years I have been doing this work and that is remarkable because I am the classic type for osteoporosis and just turned 67. I am strong, flexible and resilient. I also notice that when I almost fall, my body corrects itself and I am back up again. That is an instinctive move and I am always pleasantly surprised! Also, of course the mood benefits....the days that I lift kettlebells and do pullup practice, I am better at painting because there is a layer of deep bodily satisfaction and contentedness that puts my chronic pain from arthritis in the background, and my life happiness in the front of my mind. Thanks, Eric for teaching me all this.

I am incredibly lucky to have found Form is Function and Eric! I'm in my mid 20's and have been dealing with nearly daily pain from knee and tailbone injuries years back and after only a few months with Eric that pain was reduced about 90%. It has changed my life. I never thought it was even possible for me, I thought I had just started my journey into a chronically painful adulthood, but not now!

Eric worked with my specific needs and body to tailor a training program just for me. It's always a safe and communicative training environment. His goals are to see you succeed in what you want and also to be happy and healthy so he'll never push you to do something that is dangerous for your body.

I also find the mindset I've learned at FIF has beautifully leaked into my everyday life. I have a more positive outlook on what I think I can do, I've completed tasks I would have usually given up on because I'm developing a real intuition about my actual limits and abilities and they're a lot higher than I ever thought they could be.

If you're unsure about coming to Form is Function, I'd recommend just doing the free consultation with Eric! Even if you don't end up doing FIF, you'll probably get a lot out of that one consultation!

I've practiced many fitness systems and engaged in a lot of movement and routines in my lifetime: Crossfit, olympic weightlifting, yoga, martial arts, hiking, etc... but when I began to experience chronic neck pain that affected every area of my life, I went to Eric at FIF.

I'm glad I did.

The movements and techniques he taught me healed my neck (and knees and lower back) pain by activating, engaging, and strengthening muscles I wasn't using - and kind of didn't even know were there. Hard to describe - but there's a psychological component to it. The retraining he takes you through also leads to some healthier perspectives and attitudes. It gives you a few things to think about, not to mention tweak. Call it soft skill training and development? Let's go with that.

I was compensating for a lack of full mobility by overusing muscles I was historically comfortable with to perform repetitive movements. Meanwhile, a whole series of muscles were atrophying. This created problems for the vertebrae of my spine, began to distort posture, and cause severe pain.

My work with Eric has changed the way I stand, the way I regard integrated movement and weight training, and has enabled me to live and do my job pain free - as long as I keep up with the training, which is easy to do at home.

Consider spending some time and money with Eric getting to know and retraining your body dynamics. You can't put a price tag on a pain free existence, but you sure can measure the ways pain holds you back from a full and happy life.

Form is Function has been there to support me across my entire fitness journey. My deadlift went from barely my bodyweight to a PR of 300lbs. When I wanted to build mass, my bodyweight went from 145lbs to 170lbs. When I got climbers elbow, FiF helped me heal and prevent future injury. FiF gave me confidence in my strength on the climbing wall and helps me feel anti-fragile. Eric is an incredibly knowledgeable instructor and always fascinating to have a conversation with. No matter what your fitness goals are, I believe Eric and FiF can help.

The work I've been doing with Eric has been life-changing. I spend a lot of time at a computer, and I've had severe lower back issues from improper posture and too many hours of sitting. Maintaining a strong body with proper functional movements is the only thing that keeps my back from going out. Learning about what works and doesn't work for my body is a continuous discovery process. With Eric's training, I've learned correct movements and how to use weights safely. The knowledge and strength I've gained have carried over to my everyday life – which is incredibly helpful even in the garden and carrying groceries!

I can attribute my mountain biking, snowboarding, etc., capabilities to this work. I've even had some serious falls that have thankfully only resulted in minor injuries because my body is strong and adept. I also love that this is helping build my bone density which is essential later in life.

Now, after four years of training, my strength doesn't disappear even if I have a few weeks break from training. I highly encourage anyone with injuries or looking to improve their strength or athletic performance to work with Eric. You won't be disappointed.

I can't recommend Eric enough. I came to him as I was preparing to compete in Mma fights. I have a naturally skinny body type and don't put on muscle easily; despite training for years in martial arts I would often lose match ups due to my lack of overall strength despite having greater skill. Eric transformed the way I approached strength training and I saw the results quickly. He turned my biggest weakness into one of my biggest strengths, pun intended. He had me deadlifting up to 385 pounds before my first fight, which was almost double what it was when I first came to him. I get frequent remarks about being far stronger than I look from training partners and even had the nickname vise grips at one of my jui jitsu gyms.

Eric is a kind person and a very effective coach. He welcomes everyone, whether they're an athlete like myself or someone with chronic pain struggling to get up off the couch.

I have been working with Eric for several years. What I noticed right away was that my running, cycling, and swimming improved. On my bike, I was able to keep my back and shoulders neutral, without effort so my neck was no longer bothered by riding. His focus on refining and teaching good form is invaluable. Additionally, simple things such as lifting a full cast-iron pan with one hand, instead of two, postural improvements, needing to move a pile of wood and doing it without effort or fatigue, etc. Lastly, recently, I was very, very ill and I believe that I am still here because I went into the illness with a strong body and the knowledge of how to push and when to rest.

I began working with Eric Kenyon at Form is Function in May 2018. At first, my goal was to "be fit" and "well sculpted." I had not realized the power of having core strength and that the fitness and sculpting come as a benefit -- not the goal. I had been "working out" regularly for over 35 years at gyms and with fitness coaches. I do QiGong, Yoga and Pilates. But never achieved the results I have with Form is Function

With Eric's coaching -- I was soon able to
💪 get up off the ground without using my hands
💪 not tire doing simple chores like vacuuming or housework
💪 schlep the garbage cans up our steep driveway without my legs barking or being out of breath
💪 see muscles in my arms
💪 squat down to pick something up with out my thighs and hips hurting
💪 carry a 50 pound pail of sand down to our hangar without straining my back or arms (all has to do with good form and "bracing")
💪 catch a friend who lost his balance and was falling backwards. I used all the functional tools to brace myself, squat and slowly lower my friend to the ground protecting his head.

Today -- in my own home -- I do a simple, daily routine using Indian clubs, and a few light kettle bells. I have been doing this regularly for three years. I enjoy Eric's classes, when I can attend to get pointers on form and the comradery with others who enjoy the same program.

What I have learned with Eric and Form is Function is superior to any other form of workout I have ever done.

Eric is a great teacher. He has helped me stay focused on my goals, recover from past injuries and return to mobility and strength. The training I have received from him is sustainable toward my long term goals of staying healthy and strong. Highly recommended!

World class fitness.

When I first decided to exercise, I decided to work out at Planet Fitness. It was only $10 month and I wasn’t sure I was going to stick with it. After two years, I proved I could stick with it - and I even had a little more muscle definition. But, even though I was working with a trainer there were no goals, no direction, and a whole lot of soreness and boredom. When I moved back to GV, it was a relief to give up the gym for hiking. But, after a year and during the pandemic, I needed to move again. I was recommended to Form is Function and I’m so glad I chose to invest in my health. In a few short months, I’m noticeably stronger than ever before - all without soreness or pain. In fact, my former issues with pain (wrists, shin splints) no longer bother me. This fitness is NOT about how you look or “how much” you can do, it’s about making your body stronger and more responsive and more capable so you can do the things you want to do without worry or pain.
