Functional Lifestyles is Semi-Private Fitness Studio, that caps all classes to 10 clients with 2 coaches every class.
We are a movement based strength & conditioning program that focuses more on how you move in the beginning vs how much you move.
Every client works individually with a coach on nutrition, mobility, stress/sleep management, etc. We have made small group training as personalized as can be.
Health is holistic and we help you build a balanced life with the support of your coaches and community.

Have been with this studio for over a year and still enjoying my workouts here. Enjoy the format with the semi private group workouts that rotate every six weeks. Keeps it interesting and varied. Coaches are great. Knowledgeable. Down to earth. Helpful and fun. Shout out to all the coaches but special call out to Alvin ( my coach) for driving me? Encouraging me? To keep on track. All coaches are really personable and fun. I was gonna name them but they all are (Amanda, Hanna, Glen, Drew, Carina) really good and each kinda have their specialty and focus it seems. Recommend this place since it’s kept me going and engaged. And they are DOG friendly. Come get your doggy fix too!

My wife and I have been consistently training at Functional Lifestyles for about a year now, and it’s been an incredible experience. All the coaches — Alvin, Drew, Amanda, Hana, Carina, Glenn—are not only knowledgeable, but also genuinely invested in everyone’s progress. They motivate us to push our limits while always emphasizing proper form and safety. Workouts are tracked as well, and is amazing to see performance improvement over time. I started to look into Functional Lifestyles a couple of years back would see the gym across the street from the office I was working at. After transitioning to fully remote work, and going through surgery following an injury, I decided I needed to do something and joined the new Mountain View location. Some friends spoke very highly of FL and they were not wrong, in fact, they were too modest. This has been so good for many reasons, not just health. The community, friends that I have from the neighborhood and the coaching staff, which is amazing. My check-in coach, Drew, provides me with holistic guidance, not just exercise, and keeps me honest while encouraging me when things don't go so well. I not only recovered from surgery but I am back to doing what I love, which is hitting the trails, whether on a run, bike or a hike, and feel much better than in the last several years.

Great Gym with very knowledgeable staff.

My new year's wish for 2025: "To lift heavy." Ideally with other ladies. I didn't know where, but I knew what I didn't want -- a bro-y CrossFit type environment. Been there, done that. On a fateful walk in my neighborhood one day in February, I stumbled across the newish gym, Functional Lifestyles. The first trainer, Alvin, I meet left me struck by his name -- an uncommon one that also happened to the name of my trainer in NYC. It was a sign! And so I signed up right away. Coach Francisco worked with me on setting my goals and Coach Carina is helping me reach them, along with Coach Hana, Coach Alvin, Coach Drew, and other members of this extraordinary community. What a lovely group of knowledgeable trainers and warm classmates (no more than 10 per group session) who make it easy to pair up on certain exercises. It's a clean, encouraging space with good equipment, great music, and an open air concept (thx to a removable fourth wall). I've really enjoyed my first dozen classes here and am grateful for Coach Carina, whose close guidance and care are helping me get back in the (kettlebell) swing of things. Highly recommend it!

I’ve been a longtime fan of Functional Lifestyles—trained at the Palo Alto location for years before having kids and took a break. After struggling to find a gym I liked near downtown Los Altos, I started driving to their newer Mountain View location late last year—and I’m so glad I did.

What brought me back was reading Outlive by Peter Attia and committing to serious resistance training. What kept me coming back is Glenn and the Mountain View team. Glenn’s not only a great coach, he truly cares. The first 12 weeks included weekly check-ins (now monthly) that cover workouts, nutrition, recovery, and mobility. It’s real support and accountability—not just someone counting reps.

The programming is excellent: structured six-week cycles with themed daily lifts, warmups, and cooldowns tailored to each day’s focus. There’s also conditioning built in, so I get strength and interval training in one place. I do some cardio outside (tennis, running), but FL covers the foundation.

Thanks to this routine, I’ve already hit most of my 2025 health goals: lowered body fat, increased VO2 max, hit strength milestones like bodyweight squats and deadlifts—and I feel fantastic.

Plus, Glenn goes above and beyond—he's sent me travel workouts for vacation, drafted at-home routines when I asked about pull-ups on monkey bars, and even pointed me to Becoming a Supple Leopard when I asked about mobility. This place is smart, supportive, and truly effective. Highly recommend the Mountain View location—it has everything that makes Functional Lifestyles great, and it’s been a perfect fit for this chapter of my life.

I have to give Amanda a shout-out, my personal trainer at FL. I found myself unable to keep up with my sports, hiking and work around the house due to debilitating back-pain, and as a last ditch-effort, I thought I’d give personal training a go. It’s been truly life altering for me. I have always loved exercising and hiking, but a few years ago my back gave out and it’s been a struggle to break the pain cycle. Amanda started her work with me by teaching me how to use my breath in movement and in stabilizing the core. During the past few months we’ve added more layers of movement and resistance, worked muscles I didn’t know impacted my back, and significantly decreased my back and associated nerve pain in the process. She is teaching me how to bring breath and certain movement patterns into my daily tasks and to the sports I love. I am not new this form of work since I had been doing physical therapy before starting 1:1 with Amanda. Although that had its benefits, it was Amanda’s holistic approach and blend of breath, load, release and stretch that finally helped break my pain cycle. I never cease to amaze at her knowledge of the human anatomy and her ability to monitor and adjust what works and doesn’t work for me. I’m writing this review specifically for Amanda, but to be honest, there’s always a great vibe at FL whether you do personal training or group classes.

I’ve been going to Functional Lifestyles for about 3 months and I’ve been really enjoying my time at this gym! The class sizes are capped at 10-12 people—so you get the motivation and energy of a group setting, but also a great level of individual attention and feedback from the coaches. Everyone I’ve worked out with - Coach Glenn, Drew, Carina, Hana, Alvin - are super supportive and encouraging and have made a big difference in my progress!

The variety in the programming is also a big plus. Strength and conditioning are the core, but it’s mixed up with circuit-style workouts (shout out to Coach Carina for Funditioning Sundays), Olympic lifting (shout out to Coach Drew for making me believe I can do Cleans), and mobility-focused sessions (shout out to Coach Alvin)—which are a lifesaver after long days at a desk. The 6 week cycles keeps things fresh and helps me stay consistent. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a supportive, well-rounded fitness environment!

The vibe is always friendly and welcoming. Amanda, Alvin, Carina, Drew, Hana, Francisco—they love what they do and care about each member’s well-being. I'm lucky to train with such a passionate and supportive team.

Coach Alvin Palma's professionalism and deep knowledge of fitness, mobility, and proper form. I’ve been coming here for the past three months, and it’s been a blast! All the coaches are knowledgeable, approachable, and genuinely care about your progress. I’ve been working with Coach Hana, and her detailed cues—especially with my hypermobility in mind—have significantly improved my form and helped me feel confident doing movements I previously avoided. While the membership is on the pricier side, I find it worthwhile for the thoughtful programming focused on functional strength, the variety of workouts, regular check-ins with coaches, and the ability to track progress through metrics.

My best friend and I found this place when we were walking by and thought it looked fun. Have now been going a few times a week (6 am crew!) for the past year and highly recommend to anyone and everyone. The coaches are super knowledgeable, friendly, and have a genuine desire for us to improve individually with the best form to avoid injury. The cycles change every 6 weeks so you can truly see your progress throughout each cycle.

I go to the MV location and all of the coaches are fantastic — shoutout Glenn, Carina, Alvin, Hana, and Drew! My assigned coach, Amanda, is a truly amazing human being. Dedicated to my progress and ensuring that I am on the right track, always available for questions (even the stupid ones!), and just overall a positive light with the knowledge and experience to explain things in a way that makes sense to me. She also always looks cute and will advise on best activewear ;)

To sum up: you rock out during classes in a completely nonjudgmental environment with coaches who will make you laugh and then make you do conditioning. If you are someone who may be intimidated at the gym or just want a bit more attention to ensure you are doing the movements correctly, this is a community you can work out with and then get coffee with (or a beer if you are not in morning classes, LOL).

The workouts are always fun and challenging. With options for strength, conditioning, HYROX, mobility, and Olympic lifting, there's so much variety. It’s great for any fitness level. The coaches are super helpful and fun, and you even get paired with one to help keep you on track. I work with Amanda — she’s the best! I joined FL about 2 months ago. The classes and coaches are wonderful! They cap the # of people to 10 which puts the coach to client ratio at 1:5. I constantly get feedback and see others receive feedback on their form. Hana is a great coach! She's always engaged with us, giving us pointers! I've been at really large gyms and you can get overlooked and forgotten in the chaos so I appreciate that here. It is a bummer though that they can't accommodate more people because the 9 AM class is always waitlisted - I have to sign up way in advance. They have added more classes as there are more and more people though. Oh, and I love that there are always dogs around!

I joined Functional Lifestyles over a year ago, and I have been obsessed with it ever since. When I first started, I was coming from a primarily running and cycling routine, and I wanted to focus on increasing my strength. Thanks to FL, I've gotten so much stronger than I even imagined was possible!

I'm someone who thrives on variety, so I love that each day of the week has a different focus and that the classes change on a six-week cycle. I also really enjoy the new specialty classes they've added, especially the Olympic lifting classes. That being said, I also love that I can track my progress across classes in the six-week cycle, and I appreciate that the coaches track all the numbers for you. Also, the classes are capped at 10 members per 2 coaches, so you never feel ignored, and there's a lot of focus on technique.

Finally, I love the community. All the coaches are fantastic, and I find my check-ins with Coach Carina really useful. All the members are super supportive, and I have so much fun in every class. Love Functional Lifestyles and would highly recommend to anyone looking to get stronger!

I have been going to Functional Lifestyles for close to two years now and I love it. The classes are good size, so coaches are able to check on everyone during the class. The classes are mix of strength training as well as conditioning. I have learnt so much about exercise, food, macros and just being consistent since I joined. I worked with trainers before at big chain gyms and I thought I knew what to expect.
Glenn blew my mind. He is such an effective communicator - he picks up quickly where I go wrong in my forms and tries multiple ways to explain how I may correct. He does so patiently and calmly that he maintains a nice balance between getting it right and not to overwhelm me in the process.

The group classes were also set up nicely. It was always a fun combination of work outs.

The structure of small group classes, with one on one check ins, as well as the community that is built within the classes is unmatched. I am pushed every day to improve and to become stronger. I’m still pretty new to functional lifestyles but I am so happy with my decision to join! My husband and I joined together and I was initially a little apprehensive at first but Functional Lifestyles has completely exceeded my expectations. The classes are so great and completely different from classes I’ve taken at any other gym. They work in cycles where the workouts are the same for each day of the week for 6 weeks and then the workouts gets changed for the next cycle. The classes are small- capped at 10 participants with 2 coaches at each class, so you get the fun and group support of a usual group class but the smaller class allows for more support and feedback from the coaches. I really cannot say enough about the coaches! The coaches are top notch - huge shout out to Carina, Drew, and Hana! They’re so welcoming and supportive of new members, they make the classes fun and they really care a lot about your progress and goals. Functional Lifestyles also creates a community feel - only a few months in, I recognize and know the names of most people in the classes I regularly attended, which is something I’ve never had with any other gym. I would definitely recommend and only wish I joined sooner!

I’m SUCH a fan of Functional Lifestyles in Mountain View😍

I’m newer to the area and have been looking for a fun group of like minded people. The community is stellar! Seriously, every participant is there to get better form and increase the quality of their lifts.

Each coach brings their own expertise to the sessions. They genuinely take both an interest in each member there and the time required to meet everyone where they’re at.

Classes are capped small, so you get individual feedback, support and motivation every single class.

If all that isn’t enough…. You also meet with a coach monthly to check in and track progress on your goals. This part has been surprisingly valuable to me. I don’t struggle to keep an exercise routine. I really enjoy moving, so I’ve never really had a goal or a target I was working towards. I didn’t think I needed/wanted these check ins, but they have helped me meet and exceed some pretty significant milestones.

I have been a member at FL, MV, since January. My main motivation to join a group class setting was to build my discipline around strength training. It has been a great journey so far – having some prior experience of basic strength training movements, I was able to quickly build my strength and already have so many PR’s along the way.

I have worked with coach(es), Glenn, Drew, Amanda, and Alvin and each of them are very knowledgeable, friendly, and always on point to help each of us in the class - whether it’s teaching a new movement or correcting form during the exercise or simply motivating each of us in the class.

There are 2 coaches assigned to each class. Each class is structured with appropriate warm up and relative strength leading to the main strength training piece. The warmup routines have helped me take tremendous strides in build my strength. The coach check-ins are a bonus. Highly recommend FL to anyone who is interested in starting their strength training journey or building on one.

Functional Lifestyles has been a game changer for me! Most gyms have the same equipment and set up but what makes FL different is the coaches - and the best of the best is Alvin! The gym and classes do not feel intimidating, as the coaches are very inclusive and accommodating and build a great feeling of community. I've been going to Functional Lifestyles for a year and have really enjoyed the experience. They offer what I was looking for - a program with bonafide guided weight lifting (to help preserve bone density), an overall good workout, a focus on community, and at a price point significantly lower than personal coaching.

Workouts are an hour long and incorporate strength, cardio and flexibility. When I started, the cardio part of the workouts were too easy, but they've since increased the intensity as well as added focused cardio classes like Hyrox.

The small class setting of 10 people with 2 coaches works really well for ensuring proper form and safety and creating a fun and personable environment. No coaching by TVs or speaker systems here. The coaches are kind, knowledgeable and fun. Shout-out to Alvin, Carina, Drew, Hana and Amanda!

The open air gym is great too - so much better than the super scripted, built for volume Orange Theory, Barry's, and F45.

The staff are friendly, and you feel the positive vibe when you walk in. While there is no pressure, there is always encouragement and support for reaching the next level.

Carina is the teacher I have been working closely with during this past year. She is friendly, knows what she is talking about and has the best taste when it comes to the playlist we listen to in the class. She recently started a class on Sundays that is one of the best classes I have been to in a while. It’s a whole body workout that gently pushes you to the next level.

I can’t speak to the group classes, but I can tell you Alvin’s personal training has kept me in shape through two surgeries. At different points, I couldn’t use one arm or one foot—and I still got full-body workouts thanks to his smart, adaptable approach. I came across functional lifestyles while walking back from the dentist one day. I saw a bunch of dogs and that they had a free assessment special. I went back home and booked an appointment for myself and my partner. We met with Corey, the founder and he hooked us up with a membership.

Fast forward a year and a half later and we are hooked. The combination of excellent staff and fun friendly people and members, energetic atmosphere and music, really helped us improve our fitness and overall health.

They do a few things really well. I really appreciate the programming which changes every 6 weeks. They also have classes that are focused on different things, like hydrox, mobility, etc . There's something for everybody . CrossFit was never for me because it seemed too hard core and intense. Everybody else should come here! It covers a wide range of abilities and they focus on technique and form and helping you stay functionally fit as we age.

There is another location in Palo Alto which is their main headquarters. I've never had classes there but I know for the Mountain View location there's about 5 coaches who are all great and very knowledgeable and helpful.

They do community events a few times a year which are always fun and appreciated. I really like the fun family vibe here.

Last but not least, I really look forward to our monthly check-ins with Glenn who is the assistant manager. Really helps us keep track of our progress and keeps us motivated.

I recently joined Functional Lifestyle, in attempts to live a healthier lifestyle as I edge into "middle-age". I had passed by the gym on El Camino before, saw the intense equipment in the parking lot, and had told myself "not for me". However, I saw that they offered a free consultation, along with 2 free classes and decided to give it a try. After the first consultation, it was brought to my attention that my body was in much worse shape that I had thought it to be in, and I signed up. I have been attending classes twice a week, and working with Coach Hana on lifestyle changes outside of class. While it's still too early to say my life has been changed for the better, I can say I feel stronger and have more energy. It's been one month, and I am starting to see the change in my body (and the scale doesn't lie!) The class is small enough (only 10 people per class with 2 coaches) that I get the attention that my still-pathetic muscles and posture definitely need, but has enough people that I can't find a way out of the workouts. All the coaches carry a wonderful energy, and it rubs off on everybody in the class. We are all sore and tired by the end, but we're smiling and signing up for the next class. 10/10 would recommend!

I am a NCAA DI and former professional athlete now working in sports, health, and wellness. I am very picky about what workouts I choose to pay for because I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great trainers in the past.

I chose FL when it first opened in Palo Alto because an athlete friend told me about it and it was conveniently located. Loved it. Had to stop over Covid then rejoined when Mountain View opened.

Corey is an exceptional trainer and knows how to build a team and a business. At MV, I’ve worked the most with Glenn, Alvin, and Amanda. I’ve worked with sooo many trainers and when I say these guys are good, these guys are GOOD.

There’s plenty of variety in the programming…sometimes I choose workouts based on my schedule, based on my goals, or based on my energy levels (some days have conditioning, some don’t). The progression of workouts (how we warmup to how we build into strength work) is intelligent. Everything has a reason, and I’m never worried about injury as, due to low coach to participant ratios, there’s always a coach available to help watch my technique or offer modifications where needed.

I always leave FL happy. I’ve made friends within the community. Vibes are immaculate (mostly thanks to Amanda on the aux).

Most importantly, thanks to FL, I have a consistent and regularly healthy outlet to breakup the hustle working full time and being a mom. There is no other gym you should look into. This one is the best of the best you’ll find.

1. I had visited your location 5 times and not two. Please check you records
2. Indeed I had disc issue, but as an injury from 30yr ago and not sport related. Still not the only area impacted and there was no adaption of some of the drills to protect it.
3. With the injuries incurred, there is no reason for me continue taking classes at the same place.
4. I have asked your back office/finance team to make sure you are aware of the situation and to contact me more than once. I haven’t heard back till I posted the review…
5. I have signed a commitment for services which I paid for in advance, which is a contract.

As a very active athlete and former competitive one, I was excited to start working out and expand my routine, however after several classes I have encountered multiple injuries ( shoulder, back and elbow) which is something I have never encountered in 20+ year carrer. Even more, after discussing this with the team and asking to get our of my contract I received a negative response and a suggestion to move to 1:1 PT classes for higher price ;(

Having the flexibility of choosing which class times you want for the week has also helped me stay accountable to actually going to the gym. My two year anniversary at the Palo Alto location of Functional Lifestyles is coming up. When I heard the Mountain View location was opening up, I was stoked because it was closer to my house! I really appreciate the small group class and 6 week cycle format here. The workouts are intense, but there is always some sort of modification available for movements you’re not quite ready for yet, and the coaches are very friendly and encouraging, whatever your fitness goal is. There are two coaches for every class, so there is great attention to detail when it comes to form. When outsiders ask me what class is like, I tell them it’s like CrossFit if CrossFit wasn’t terrible. You check in with a designated coach every month on your progress and get guidance to help reach and maintain your goals. The community is great and you get to know your fellow regulars at your usual times/days. According to The Joy of Movement by Kelly McGonigal, having a community you exercise with increases your enjoyment of that exercise! There are member events about once or twice a quarter which are quite fun, and you get to know other members you don’t see every day! I also am a big fan of the gym dogs. I cannot write this review without mentioning how much I love gym dogs. Thank you FL for keeping me accountable and helping me feel capable! For the first time in my life, I have stuck to a gym routine for more than four to six weeks. 😃

In addition to the small group strength and conditioning classes where you get individual attention on form (and encouragement), members also get a personal coach to regularly meet with to help you work towards your goals, which makes Functional Lifestyles stand out. FL provides the attention you’d receive with a personal trainer but in a group setting, so you’re getting that 1:1 guidance and the energy of a class to motivate you. You’ll get stronger from the intense workouts but you’ll also know how to do them correctly because of the focus on overall mobility and form (my favorite part!) I love this gym and community, highly recommend whether you’re someone just starting out on their fitness journey or a more experienced person looking to up their game.

Best gym in Silicon Valley hands down. If you want to exponentially improve your health, be it through strength goals, mobility, nutrition, agility, or just general happiness in life. Come to FL. The way fitness is approached at this gym is like nothing else you can find. Each coach is dedicated and passionate about the health and wellbeing of all clients. If you’re looking for a new adventure, a new challenge, a new and better approach to your life, look no further. From beginner to advanced, everyone is welcome and encouraged. The community is amazing. Everyone is encouraging, the atmosphere of gyms can be intimidating. But as soon as you step foot into this gym you’ll understand the magic and uniqueness of this place.
