I was denied entry for the first time since my initial membership on 10 September 25 because I didn't have a profile photo. I signed up in person and asked not to have my photo taken (for personal reasons) of which they obviously approved. Today I was barred entry and I asked if I could show ID, which they then tried to scan which is illegal due to it being a military CAC. When I refused to let them scan it, they turned me away. On Veteran's day ironically enough. Will be cancelling my membership after this review.

I have put off writing this for some time, but I hope the complaints listed here will help foster some change at this gym. If there were a gym in the area that offered similar amenities, equipment, and a comparable price point (even if membership was $10-15 extra per month), then I would cancel my membership immediately. I will start with what I witnessed a week or so ago, which was my last straw. Firstly, on a Thursday or Friday around 4:00 PM, I found the cleaner SLEEPING on the couch, front and center, for all the members to see. I'm sure the management can find the video footage of it. Absolutely ridiculous. Then, the following Saturday, I walked into the gym to scan in as usual, only to find the two front desk attendants on their phones, conversing with each other. They left the scanner on the top of the desk and did not even bother acknowledging my presence. I had planned to ask them to change my billing information, but I didn't bother after seeing how little they seemed to care. Regarding the front desk attendants, do they actually do anything? I never see them walking around the gym; spray bottles and paper towel dispensers are always empty. The equipment is always broken or malfunctioning, without even a note on it (this is particularly true of the treadmills). The men’s locker room is a disaster. I often find myself using the bathroom provided by the mall around the corner because it gives me genuine anxiety walking into the locker room. The floors are black from being dirty all day, the sinks are dripping with dirty water from those washing their hands, and the bathroom stalls have various bodily fluids (yes, I mean VARIOUS) coating the floors. On the topic of paper towels and spray bottles, I have been there for days, and in some cases, weeks, in a row, and the same dispenser is either out of paper towels or broken, while the spray bottle(s) remain empty. Today, 11/01, there was blood wiped on the wall in the functional room. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING AND A HUGE HEALTH HAZARD. I’ll try to include a picture of it. My last complaint isn’t one directly at the gym or its employees, but at the members. There are so many old and creepy men who frequent this gym. A lot of my female friends report being stared at for an uncomfortable amount of time, followed to their vehicles, and just constantly bothered by these creeps. I see it a lot myself as well. Old, creepy, sad men stare at me at the gym when I am simply trying to exist as a person of color. I’ve even had confrontations with members in the parking lot. These creepy, older men and their behavior are disgusting and have no place in a fitness space. I’m hoping some changes will be made, but I seriously doubt it. If you are reading this and have made it this far, please choose a different gym if you can afford it.

My husband and I walked in today on a pass and very little customer service. We were asked to sign in, and there was no direction whatsoever or tour of the gym. If I was truly in the market for a gym in this area, I would not sign up just due to the lack of customer service. It so simple to greet people with a friendly smile and ask if they need assistance goes along way! What happened to customer service. Both people at the front desk are probably getting overpaid for being on their phone and not helpful at all.

The gym has plenty of space and a good variety of weights, but it’s been neglected. Some equipment has been under maintenance for over four months, like the crossover machine, which is one of the most in-demand. A few machines have broken parts, making it difficult to adjust them for proper use. The gym itself is good, but it’s one of the least well-maintained. If you’re thinking about signing up for an annual plan, make sure to visit first and check the equipment and adjustment parts before deciding to pay. And also check the water pressure of the water fountain. After so many months without maintenance, it takes 5 minutes to fill a bottle.

They make you sign a 2-year contract at this gym. At first, this might not be a bad thing. However, the amenities are lacking. I got my membership in Dec 2024 and the sauna has never worked, the treadmills frequently break or appear to exhibit software issues, and the single water fountain in the building operates at low pressure and is visibly missing parts and requires a filter replacement. Many of the paper towel dispensers throughout the gym don't work either. The cable machine closest to the men's locker room requires maintenance too.

Weight lifting equipment seems to all be in good order and high quality. The vibe is bodybuilding-y and modern which is a good aesthetic. Staff are all pretty nice, too. The owner(s) could manage space more efficiently and include more flat benches and rigs for bench press and other power lifts. There is a lot of empty space on the gym floor which could be used to elevate the 2-year commitment we all have to make.

Simple wear and tear items are adding up and making me regret committing to two years for $40 a month. This price is increasing Oct 1, 2025 for new memberships.

Way to little machines. Like 6 feet or more between machines and some areas have 10 feet open area. They need to redo their floor plan and add lots of machines. Mostly paying $40 a month they need better. Also takes months to replace 1 broken cable

Terrible customer service, and more importantly, you can't leave. After attempting to cancel online (apparently not possible) I called on the phone to ask about canceling my membership and was greeted immediately with a drawn-out audible sigh by a staff member making no effort to hide his frustration. They gave me an email address and said I had contact them that way. I wondered if I had written it down incorrectly, because no response came. But nearly two weeks later, they finally responded saying that it was impossible to cancel unless I provide proof of address change or a doctor's note AND pay $100 for the privilege. Stay far away.

It is extremely frustrating to cancel a membership with this organization. If you relocate or simply decide to stop attending, be prepared for a drawn-out, bureaucratic process that feels intentionally complicated. The lengthy "processing time" seems designed to waste your time, and the entire experience comes across as a way to extract more money through unnecessary delays. This kind of practice really shouldn’t be allowed.

I recently had the chance to visit Gold's Gym, and while I appreciate some aspects of the facility, there are a few key areas that need attention.

Firstly, the location is beautiful and has a great vibe, which I really enjoyed. However, my experience was dampened largely due to the sauna in the men's room being out of order for over four weeks. This is a significant drawback, especially for those of us who enjoy using the sauna as part of our post-workout routine. It's frustrating to see such a key amenity unavailable for such an extended time.

Additionally, I found the WiFi situation rather disappointing. I was informed that the WiFi only works in the front of the gym, which is inconvenient, especially for members who want to stay connected while they work out. It would be great if this could be improved or expanded throughout the facility.

As for the cardio equipment, while it's adequate, the options are limited. The two stationary bikes offered are decent, but overall, the cardio selection felt mediocre. I would love to see more variety and updated machines to enhance the workout experience.

I also had an interaction with the staff regarding the sauna issue, and while I was looking for assistance, I sensed some annoyance from one of the employees. It would be beneficial for the staff to be more aware of ongoing issues such as the sauna and WiFi so that they can address members' concerns with empathy and knowledge.

In conclusion, Gold's Gym has a wonderful setting and the potential to offer a top-notch experience, but with the sauna out of order and limited WiFi access, it falls short of expectations. I hope they can resolve these issues soon and provide their members with the quality experience they deserve. Come on, Gold's—let's fix the sauna and improve the WiFi!

I’ve been an employee of Golds Gym in the past for 8 years in the Bay Area so I enjoy visiting other Golds Gyms whenever possible. I visited the Monterey Golds Gym while on vacation for a weekend trip and did the 24 hour guest pass for $20 which is a good deal for Golds. It was so nice I got to visit twice. Staff was fast and friendly. Facility was a little small but had everything I needed for a quick pump. I will return if in the area again for vacation or work.

The negative reviews must be from people who don’t lift seriously. There are 4 full racks with deadlift platforms and band attachments, bumper plates and quality power bars, dumbbells up to 150 pounds, even a belt squat machine. Lots of space to work out, friendly people, clean lockers. I easily found 10 pound plates. They even offer locks for members to keep their own barbells onsite.

Very nice staff was easy to sign up, even tho I never see them get up their desk. So weights are not always organized in place and the place itself is pretty dirty... Also they are doing some renovations but the guys who are fixing stuff around are super nice and respectful! I'm so glad I only paid for month to month, that membership is $100 per month. The gym is very crowded besides machines there's not much room in between so it is not safe for covid - which brings the question why they took away all the mats ... No place to stretch. Either the cold dark room (now under construction) on the wooden floors or on the itchy fake grass in the middle.. but I brought my own mat and the grass was ok! As long as there are not a lot of ppl during peak afternoon time of course. sauna does not heat well, sat there for 40 min without a single sweat. Rest of the girls in the bathroom agreed. Was like sitting by a dog breathing on you. In my personal opinion as someone who travels California for work, it is very expensive and a bit ghetto. But the people in the area are very nice and good looking. I am used to Venice and yet there is nothing that connected to them. I'd change the name 😳 But there was a nice crowd there, they deserve better. LA fitness closed me $60, 24 hour fitness is another $45 a month how is this gym $100 plus a month is beyond me. No reception in the entire area. No phone , no internet. (Update; I discovered they have wifi by seeing someone scroll their social media! So I spent the first 2 weeks with no service)..The least they should offer is a towel and a mat and a working sauna. So make sure u download your music. Overall a bit disappointed in your gym, this beautiful town deserve better ! But I still like it due to the awesome people and views ! I wish the staff did more than sit around but not much room to walk around there so I get it lol

Restrooms are consistently dirty or smelly. Gym smells pretty awful at any hour. Water fountain is broken, but what’s new. Not enough 10 pound plates. A good amount of broken and/or out of service equipment. A good amount of equipment that no one ever uses then not enough benches, squat racks, dumbbells for peak times. Stuff to clean the equipment is inconvenient to grab or is usually empty. TV that plays movies is consistently on menu screen (not a big deal, but just shows how much that staff doesn’t care). All the staff does is sit at the desk and watch movies all day. The gym is currently getting a fresh paint job and moving things around, but not anything that seems to fix the user experience. Probably one of the worst golds gyms I’ve been to and I’ve been going to Golds for 10 years across 6 states.

The gym is great but they are not ethical. Once you sign up they do not provide any customer service. They don't even return your phone calls. It is impossible to cancel even within 48 hours. They are very pushy about you signing up as a member or making you sign a coaching 3 months contract and if you are not satisfied after the first session, they do not try to communicate with you and help you. I am trying to cancel mine and did let them know within 48 hours and I am still waiting for a phone call. My daughter took a monthly membership and was still charged even after cancelling a month ahead of time, Be careful before signing up anything with them and do not respond to their unprofessional pressure especially because they will not talk to you after you sign and don't seem to care if you are unhappy.

This place is run by crooks. They illegally acquired my credit card info from another gym in town and charged me without me ever signing a contract. They than made me sign a cancellation form even though I never signed a contract to begin with and refused to refund my money. Luckily my bank took care of that for me.

I recently visited this Gold's location while on vacation last week in the area. The location was cool. In a mall area but sunday morning not packed at all. Equipment was clean and new. Weights were racked in position. Had a few things most gyms dont..i like that. Staff was friendly and visit charge was only $15. Other locations I've visited were $25. Overall great experience and workout. Definitely will be back when im in the area.

The facility itself is fine. Very nice weight sets and universal machines. Hours are convenient and in general the gym is very clean.
However, I was a member since it opened and was treated poorly when I needed to close out my membership.
I suffered a cancer that left me debilitated to the point I could not even visit the gym to cancel my membership in writing.
I was given the name of the general manager and his email. My emails were ignored for weeks. Phone calls and messages were ignored.
Finally a month into the attempt to cancel the general manager wrote me back and said he would cancel my month to month contract but conveniently added another month to the membership.
This was an obvious grab for a few more dollars and it was frankly insulting.
Even though my attempt to cancel began a month before the general manager stalled knowing full well he would charge me for one last month.
It was bad enough the gym would spring annual membership 'dues' to the tune of $50. on top of the membership fee but to stall on an obvious ailing long time member for a few dollars speaks to either the individual manager or the corporate philosophy in general.
When I am better I will not be returning to Gold's Gym. There are other gyms.

Great staff and welcoming attitude. They greet you coming in the door and bid you farewell on your way out. Donna was at the desk this evening and was very sweet to me and my daughter. We were trying out the gym for our first day of a trial membership. The gym wasn't crowded and there were no typical "gym rats" hogging all the mirrors. It was a nice experience. I could see paying $50/mo. Great equipment and very sanitary. Showers and sauna available as well as a cardio section and a cross-fit area. Plenty of space and all necessary equipment is on-site.

Just moved from modesto...i checked out the racket club...and chose golds, not only were they cheaper but the weights go up higher more equipment, an outstanding staff who is genuinely friendly n helpful, and they even took the time to show me where to buy a few items i needed from a sports store being as i am new here! I've stopped in during construction several times, signed up to be on your mailing list multiple times--I've never received a call back from anyone. So I forgot about Golds and stayed with my membership at In Shape until one of your instructors recommended I give you a call. Here I am again, I've sent an email and today I called and spoke with a woman who was checking in clients instead of speaking with me. This is seriously not only the nicest gym in the Monterey Bay area, but it is one of the nicest gyms I have been to around the world. The space is huge, but not so big that you feel lost, the equipment is very high end, and everyone who works here is SO welcoming and kind. Jen signed me up, and I have trained with her husband T.C., and with Julio and Cory and they are all amongst the best trainers I have ever met. I spent the most time training with Julio and he is extremely creative, knowledgable and most importantly, he knows how to push me when I need it. ;) Thank you to everyone at Gold's Gym Monterey for creating such a wonderful environment. I've been going here for about 1.5 years and can say with all confidence that this is the gym I would've designed for myself if I had the opportunity. It's clean, has really well engineered equipment, fantastic staff (seriously, awesome people), and it's designed with good taste/aesthetic. Can't recommend it enough, and this is after being a member at In-Shape, Monterey Sports Center, and Fitness Evolution.

I LOOOOVE this gym. The staff is amazing!! They're always happy and willing to help if needed. Everyone is always is a great mood. The gym is always clean and the environment is so peaceful. I'm so happy I have a membership here.

My boyfriend wanted to switch from In shape to Golds Gym but I was reluctant. He finally talked me into checking it out and I'm glad I did. No more waiting for machines while they are being tied up by someone too busy texting, fiddling with their ipods etc. This place is clean and loaded with all the latest and greatest. Super friendly and helpful staff as well :) I debated writing this review for selfish reasons only...I like that it is not super packed with people but I'm sure all that will change eventually.

Great gym! I just joined and they have all the latest equipment. David Navarro signed me up and he was awesome! The staff is always friendly and helpful. It is never too crowded and they have duplicates of the most used machines so you are never waiting for a squat rack like other gyms I've been to. Overall, great price and a great experience!

Don't bother. As of June 2015 this place is closed down. It didn't occur to them to make any mention of this on their website nor on the corporate site.
