In May 2025, my mother went to In‑Shape Monterey (2370 N Fremont St) to place my membership on hold. I wasn’t in town at the time because I was going through a serious medical emergency involving my loved one, who later passed away in July 2025. I was told the account would be put on a $5/month hold, and that’s what we agreed to.

I never used the gym. I was out of town trying to survive one of the worst moments of my life. After everything, I find out In‑Shape is trying to charge me $161, completely going against what they promised.

I explained this entire situation to Raul, the manager — I told him what I’d just been through, that I was grieving, that it’s now just me and my kids, and that I was simply asking them to honor what they said.

Raul acts polite and professional, but it’s fake. He hides behind company policy and never lifts a finger to actually fix anything. I gave him every chance, every detail, and he still did absolutely nothing.

I also reported this to the BBB, and In‑Shape didn’t respond at all. No explanation. No follow-up. Nothing.

It’s clear this company doesn’t care — not about their word, not about their customers, and definitely not about people who are dealing with real-life tragedies.

I would like to congratulate Instructor Alex (Zumba and Body Bump) and Romina (Zumba) very very very much. Alex has a fairly structured class, she is aware of the times, of the steps, but above all, pay attention to the class. She arrives prepared with the class previously planned. It is done with the appropriate timing, which helps ensure that no one gets cold during the routine and avoids uncomfortable inconveniences. I realize that the warm-up times, maximum and minimum intensity, as well as the recovery times are perfectly well thought out. We go by her own means, when she gives one class after the other, she changes her shoes to use the appropriate footwear and have a neat appearance. My respects for her, I highly recommend her class and her person, it is simply extraordinary, my total respects to her high professionalism and commitment. Romina is very punctual, super friendly, tries to be close to the class and is interested in everyone enjoying following and learning the routine, she gives us signals (and makes sure we understand her signals and body language) she is very creative in organizing her class which makes it super fun but what I love most about her is the way she seeks to include everyone, to make a nice group, one feels among friends in a leadership like hers, she is a beautiful little box of beautiful things. Supper upper highly recommend.
Thanks to both of you, they're the best ❤️❤️. If you have the chance, take theyr classes.

The facility is great! The managers do a wonderful job—everything is clean and well taken care of. The pool and sauna are always in top shape, which makes working out here really enjoyable. It would be great to have a punching bag added to the gym, but overall, everything is just fine. Great place to work out. They have lots of free weight, weight, equipment, classes, and they have warm indoor swimming pool, and wet and dry sauna room. The employee there is also nice . Found a lot of people who like to exercise them and then we become good friend. In shape open very early in the morning and close late at night so I never lose my opportunity to work out there. I’ve been a member since they open And will stay there Because their fee is affordable.

get zero help from management had my account closed when it was not supposed to be never missed a single payment or anything. Had to remove someone and ended in my whole account being shut down. For years been going up to them about changes made to my account that i didnt approve and always being told management will reach out and they never do. A few years ago I was able to track one down and was told to call in a corporate number which led to nothing being fixed. Then the cycle continued till now ending with the closing of my account without me being aware till it was too late. I've left my name and number multiple times through out the years and never hear back did it 3 weeks ago and once again this morning and still nothing it is now past 6pm and spoke to a desk worker about it and left my info at 4am.

This is by far the dirtiest, most unhygienic, messy, disorganized, nastiest gym I have ever used in my life. Not a single person wipes their equipment down, re-racks weights, or even covers their mouth when they cough. I saw a man bare ass nude in the coed sauna. Gym staff made exactly zero effort to enforce any standard or keep the area clean.

Do not come here unless you're trying to get tetanus or worse.

Front desk is always friendly. The gym is not super packed with people. The bathrooms are a little messy from time to time but the licker room is usually pretty clean. The showers are cleaned regularly however , i've come across gross women that can't pick their globs of hair out of the showers and drains after they use it. But over all the locker rooms are usually clean.

I have been going to this gym since 2009 and have steadily seen a decline in cleanliness and working machines. Currently there are 10 cardio machines out of order. 2 out 4 stair machines have been out of order going on 10 weeks now. The other 2 are on the verge of not working. When asked why it was still out of service, I was told they are waiting on a part. Apparently, that takes over 2 months. My husband and I come in at 4am and the bathrooms are disgusting. Women's bathroom now have urinal cakes (?) behind the toilets. No one cleans or sanitizes the bathroom so I get the added pleasure of using a restroom that hasn't been cleaned since the previous night- just mopped. Only reason I continue my membership here is they open early and are 2 blocks from my house. Cardio equipment is the original from 2009 with the exception of a couple of treadmills that are already out of order. One literally has a cone that has been there for weeks. We pay a maintenance fee, but why I have no idea. This gym could use an upgrade and machines/equipment that actually works. Timely maintenance would be an added bonus.

The place is ok but I had problems twice with people skipping the line for the equipment and be arrogant about it. So rather then start a useless fight I took it to the front desk and they did absolutely nothing saying that I was supposed to fix it my self... How exactly I'm not sure considering that I already try to talk to the people in question and they simply kept doing whatever with no regards. So either I engage in a conflict or I leave . It was an easy choice considering also that during enrollment a few things were a little shady about the money. Not the place for me.

GOOD: plenty machines weights and cardio area at any time of day. However, machine weights can get very congested during peak hours-as expected. Above average animi-ties: 50m pool, sauna, steam room, hot tub, 3 racketball courts, & couple massage chairs available for "Premium Members".

BAD: locker room, showers, and toilets get beat up. Only 3 toilets including one in pool area) for all men needing it..asking a lot. Granted most don't shower at the gym but if you do, expect typical grooming by products to be carelessly spewed around shower stalls. It quite nasty. No expert here but I think showers are utilized by homeless population with active membership as well. Not hating on them but shaving hair and leaving it on the floor is nasty. Pretty obvious when they roll in with luggage roller and flip flops.

UGLY: I do lap swims. I least i try. Suppose to use the phone app to reserve lane but there zero enforcement so you could show up and find your lane being occupied. Causes for undue tension when your forced to either wait or ask the swimmer to move. Than you got people using the dedicated swim lanes to do everything else but swim. People with long hair not wearing swim caps-makes me throw up little when i get some strangers hair in my mouth.

*PARKING: weird situation where the parking lot accommodates not only gym goers but folks that live in the apartments adjacent to the facility. Most of parking stalls closest to left side of gym always occupied. You also have RV style vehicles parked on the other side of gym..just something to take note.

OVERALL: Its an above average gym with above average amenities. Pick you times to workout wisely to avoid crowd and fighting for parking. Recommend staff enforce swim lane reservation, swim cap for folks with long hair, pre-shower before entering pool, & and look into adding more toilets.

I was a member for quite some time until the camera started appearing everywhere. now it seems as if every fifth customer. Has to be an influencer or a tiktok superstar.

And when asking if they don't mind moving their equipment or waiting until I finish my workout. I am at with A level of disrespect and resistance that is not worth the trouble.

I travel extensively for work and frequent Monterey. This is my "home-gym away from my home-gym". This gym offers nearly everything I look for when becoming a member at gyms. The facility itself is actually rather small in my opinion, BUT they've managed to fit everything in without it feeling overly cramped.

Group classes are fun and upbeat, although I do wish there was opportunity to for 1-more frequent yoga classes, 2-more advanced yoga classes...but thats ok.

The sauna and steam room are a good plus to me, along with the lap swim and racket rooms.

My biggest complaint is that the free wights are literally NEVER in order. You'll find 10s near the 30s and 45s where the 2.5s should be. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else but it truly drives me up the wall and is the biggest factor holding back the final 5th star.

I like the child care. It is one of the best parts of my membership. The staff there are great and the play area is a lovely size. My kids love it and my wife and I can workout without worries. The yoga class on Saturday morning with Mariana is fantastic. She is one of the best teachers I have had. Mariana's class is different every week. It is obvious that she spends a great deal of time and energy focusing each class on a different area of the body. Her class is always packed and she needs to teach at least 2 or 3 more classes a week. Susana is a great yoga teacher as well with her yoga flow

I usually love it here and I come almost every day. But recently they started letting a guy bring a massive dog (not a marked service animal, some sort of 150lbs plus Mastiff) and he's letting it sniff at and intimidate people while they are trying to get their workout in.

Especially during one of the busiest times of the day, right after everyone is getting off work, I just can't believe this is allowed. Writing this review from inside the gym and this dog glaring at everyone has the entire ab training section cleared out so that the members can't use it. And again it's like 5:30 pm and the gym is packed.

We are on a road trip with my bf and try to find places to work out at on the go. We really loved this gym, it’s spacious, has a ton of different machines, a pool and we could play rocket for no extra cost. It was a bit crowded between 8:30-10:30pm but it was still good. Staff was really friendly and helpful.
The best thing: their day passes are valid for 24 hrs, so for $15 we could go work out in the evening and in the morning too. I really appreciate it, wish other gyms had the same system.

I recently visited In Shape Gym and I have to say I was thoroughly impressed with my experience. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and the facility was well-maintained and clean. One particular improvement that stood out to me was the steam room - it was top-notch and provided a truly relaxing experience.

I also appreciated the variety of equipment available for use. However, I hope they consider expanding their free weight area, as I noticed it was a bit limited compared to other areas of the gym. Despite that, I have no doubt that In Shape Gym is committed to providing the best possible experience for their members, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great workout facility.

I had an okay experience for the most part going to In Shape. We are military and my husband had to move in July, I wasn't able to keep my membership and had open a new one. I waited for a promo and it worked out but in September cancelled my membership online, which was confirmed on their website as cancelled. All done correctly,, within the 30 days period. CONFIRMED by their website! I received a confirmation and after that multiple emails with return offers and requests for feedback. Today, checking out my bank account I see that In Shape charged for the past 3 months after I CANCELLED my membership. They didn't apologise or returned the money, they said it was too bad I haven't received a confirmation email and that I could cancel now. It's insane that companies just take our money, acting with malice and you just have to be cool with it. I shouldn't be penalised for their system not sending me an email or not updating things when I cancelled it. I will try to retrieve the money in the small claims court and see how that goes.

Due to the complete failure of this clubs management to enforce the State and County masking mandate, we are cancelling our membership.
This club is essentially a mass Covid spreader because over half of its members are working out without any masks on.
More importantly, the Staff observes this transgression and completely ignores it. This clubs members and Staffs behavior is a danger and potentially deadly facility to membership and staff. The County must close this place down! After speaking to the club Manager this evening, I am even more certain than ever that this facility must be closed down. He told me and I quote, " we have signs abouy wearing masks at the door, and we announce it over the P.A. system. But when we speak to club members about wearing masks, many of them become, "irritated", so we dont do that anymore". He further went on to explain that members want to just workout and be stay healthy
To which I told him, by creating an environment where Covid 19 is easily spread peoples health will be in peril. At the Monterey Athletic club, masks are not only mandatory the staff insists that they be worn. Especially to those who dont like to wear masks. If people there dont or wont wear masks they are asked to leave. Maybe In Shape management can take a clue! I feel sorry that InShape management cant or wont take an uncompromising position when it comes to the health of their employees and management. Instead they dont want to irritate these non maskers.

Signed up for the “free tour” on the website and then clicked the box to workout afterwards. Showed up at the time we reserved and the lady said, “there is no one here to give you a tour”. I asked, “well can we at least show ourselves around and try out the equipment?” She said it would be fifteen dollars for each person. We wasted our time coming in when the website falsely advertised and we even made an appointment. There was no way we were paying $30 total to check out their equipment. No one showed up to keep the appointment I made online then checked back over through the phone.

This is a decent place. Aside from the pool area, it is pretty clean. It is certainly nice they have a lap pool, sauna, steam room and hot tub but they tend to be on the dirty side. The pool needs to be brushed more often to avoid the dirt build up on the bottom. They say the lanes can be shared but they are about half the size of normal competition lanes as it is so that would be very annoying to have to do. That being said, it’s pretty easy to look at the schedule and reserve a lane that isn’t being used. The steam room needs a daily wash out and judging from the broken grout lying about, it doesn’t appear to be getting it. The rest of the gym and locker rooms have a clean appearance.

I use the pool area every time im there. Been back only 4 days since resuming full hours schedule. I'm currently going 8pm to 10:30pm. Tonight the hot tub doesn't work, and there was some crazy excuse having to do with PG&E having power down yesterday. I was looking at your site at 3am this morning. The power was down from about 10am till about 2pm. But that was the excuse used for the hot tub to be non-op. Before CoVid, there was always issues with the hot tub, steam room or pool being down. Excuses, excuses, excuses. What with the fees going up, services going down, ( towels were included when I signed my contract to join, now they're not available), and the maintenance fees that were taken from my bank account ( which I don't recollect seeing in the past), I would think every thing in the gym would have been maintained in the last year and a half, for a reopening. I was already being billed for use of the gym before July, but the hours were not workable for my wife and myself, because she chooses to go at the later hours, and with out appointments, like a Drs. Office. I spoke to 1 of 3 " managers, before I went out of state in July- till August, about already being billed but not making use of the gym, and the maintenance fees. That person was supposed to get back to me through email in early July, but havent heard a word from her, ( short Hispanic female with short hair). Our returning to the gym or not, was dependent upon the answers on the billing, if I was satisfied with the outcome. I do expect some money to be returned. If she wasn't going to respond, someone higher up should have. It's very obvious that maintenance didn't happen during the period of time that the gym was totally closed or partially open, just look at the dust on the air vents and piping above the pool, and in small cardio room, or is that mold?
