The people there are really nice and they do good things in the community but their hours and maintenance of things like the sauna make it feel like the gym dues are there to subsidize preschool and after school programs. The last 6 years have been a steady decline in level of service in the gym. Maintenance during normal hours, long repair times for the sauna and hours that only line up for the retired and work from home crowd have added up to needing to find a new gym to belong to. With so many options in the area, this place was a real gem, until about 2019, and it just keeps fading.

They have rules that you must be at least 13 years of age to do the exercises on your own. We went with an 11 year old and asked that 11 year old to do go on the treadmill. Then after we asked that 11 year old to go on the treadmill, one of the staff asks,"How old is this kid on the treadmill?" I said,"11." The 11 year old is old enough to just put the speed at 1 on the treadmill and not fall down off the treadmill.

They YMCA needs a professional team managing this location.

Jacuzzi (spa) is CLOSED frequently. The staff cannot fix Ph problems in under 3 hours.

The competitive pool has lane CLOSURES due to reservations - reservations for the elite few who do NOT pay extra and that do NOT occupy all the lanes reserved. The remaining people have to WAIT for the few remaining lanes.

The instructional pool is CLOSED frequently when the heat pump fails.

The sauna is frequently CLOSED due to reasons unknown.

I found this YMCA to be a very great place to go work out. The facilities were all very clean, the pool was amazing and the staff was very friendly. This certainly isn't going to be your $200 a month club premium club, however it definitely holds up to a very high standard and has all the amenities to get a great workout in.

Unsafe, unprofessional, they don’t have lifeguards at the kids’ pool (at least not properly trained lifeguards).

My son was in a preschool swim class. I look over from across the pool, and while the teacher is with another kid, my son is bobbing in the middle of the pool, submerged over his head, not breathing. The “lifeguard” (Keenan I believe) is staring into space. I sprint the entire length of the pool. The lifeguard is still staring into space. The instructor realizes what’s happening and grabs my son. The lifeguard is still staring into space. There’s loud splashing as my son is pulled gasping to the side of the pool. The lifeguard doesn’t notice, still staring into space.

I go yell at the lifeguard to pay better attention. His reaction is “huh?”, like he had no idea anything happened. My son insists on finishing the class, so I go sit down.

Then some other lifeguard (older bald guy) comes over to yell at ME, because I had yelled at the lifeguard who let my son almost drown. The spacey lifeguard is highly-trained, I’m told, there’s no better in San Diego. And he’s a Christian and believes in God and doesn’t believe in yelling. The whole time, I’m remaining calm and smiling a lot because my son and the rest of the preschoolers are eight feet away watching, and I don’t want them to be more upset than they already were. Baldy had no such inhibitions - he’s yelling and waving his arms about how bad yelling is :P It would have been hilarious… if I hadn’t just watched my son almost die.

The teacher is good, it wasn’t his fault, but overall there is a very low level of competence and professionalism from this group. There were at least half a dozen other ymca instructors/lifeguards chilling near the pool, none of whom were paying any attention to what was going on in the water. When there was a near-lethal incident from an MIA lifeguard, management’s first reaction wasn’t to replace the lifeguard, or maybe add a second lifeguard. Management’s first reaction was to leave the space cadet on (solo) duty, defend him as highly-skilled, and scold the parent for suggesting otherwise.

If you do a class here, you need to keep eyes on your kid at every single moment - because for all useful purposes THERE ARE NO FUNCTIONAL LIFEGUARDS at this YMCA, just people in in YMCA clothes daydreaming and chatting by the pool.

I just discovered the Encinitas YMCA, and I must say that I am so glad that I did. The ladies at the front desks are exceedingly helpful. I met Sandy yesterday; Sandy helped me at the refreshment counter, such a congenial, kind fellow! I've joined many gyms; I grew up in coastal North County, never knowing what a gem I had in Encinitas. A Y membership costs $500.00 a month on the East Coast! How anyone could complain about the fees at the Magdalena facilitate is beyond me! I love this place! I only recommend hiring someone whose only job is to check Member's IDs. Possibly, the folks here are too kind and wouldn't want Members to be annoyed. There's an air of exclusivity here. I highly recommend the Encinitas YMCA. Wow!

I’m leaving a 1-star review because of a terrible experience I had at this YMCA. Last Friday, both my workout shoes—my sneakers and flip-flops—were stolen from the changing room. I had only stepped away for five minutes to use the sauna, and when I returned, they were gone.

I immediately reported the issue to the staff, who said they’d look into it. Despite having cameras in the facility, no one was able to help me recover my belongings or provide any follow-up. It’s frustrating and disappointing to feel so unsafe in a community gym I trusted.

This lack of accountability and security has made me question whether this is a place I want to continue going to. It’s unacceptable for members’ personal belongings to be at risk like this without proper action taken.

Some nice equipment, but this gym should really be a 55 and over facility. They have far oversold memberships and the majority of the clientele are very rude , elderly folks. I’m all for staying in shape as you get older, but , the lack of etiquette in this gym is astonishing.
If you like to enjoy a clean , mellow gym, this is not the place for you

Bought a membership for my little one (3 years old) SPECIFICALLY for the amenities of the splash pad, pool, and tumble gym that the attendant over the phone sold me on. As soon as I signed the paperwork, all of the workers became cold and didn’t even want to give us a tour/show us where things were. Quite literally rolling their eyes and ignoring us with AirPods in and backs turned. Tumble gym isn’t even at this location and can only be used if you sign your kid up for classes (only 5+ years and older). Splash pad has been broken for over an entire year? No excuse for this, period. And the pool is only open for use 2 hours out of the day unless you’re in group (statistically horrible way to learn) swimming lessons. In my opinion, a complete waste of money and false advertising. You’re better off joining the Yacht club for $125 a month, getting a membership at a local country/tennis club for the summer, or going to different places separately for different things. The La Jolla location isn’t bad, but this location in particular seems to simply just be a dirty and cheap gym for adults and low income daycare for kids. I was shocked to see how busy it was for what a nice area Encinitas/Leucadia claims to be. What a depressing change from the original vision for the YMCA of sharing family time through group amenities and active hobbies to do together.

Pass on swim lessons at the Encinitas Y. We had a poor private swim lesson experience. There were different instructors each lesson for 2 months. It's really difficult to progress with inconsistent instructors. Also no make up lessons were allowed when we had a family emergency. They don't care about the quality of their service they just want your money.

The guy who runs indoor soccer was screaming the F bomb at me 2 years ago.. when I took out my phone to record, he instantly went back into his office.

In November of 2022, I was spit on intentionally by an opposing soccer player right in front of the ref and a ymca worker. Because nothing was done, I spit on the player back. Because of this, they banned me from ever playing again. They never even spoke to me to hear my side of how things went. Perhaps there's a conflict of interest from the earlier incident?

Now the rest of the team has finally quit since it's not worth getting injured. The refs don't protect the players and the people in charge don't care to do anything about it.

Great Gym, this YMCA has summer camps for kids and also for kids with special needs. The YMCA is also a great place to work out. There is a pool and also a Kindergarten? This YMCA even has a skatepark. You have to pay 10$ for entry though so it’s kinda a scam. Great Gym, would recommend for the all around gym experience.

The Ecke YMCA Competition Pool was full of bird feces when I swam Friday, 1/2/2023. The roof panels in the center of the swimming pool were removed over the next lane, towards the deep end, and hundreds of bird droppings were on the bottom of the middle of the pool. I came home with a rash. I called the YMCA multiple times Friday, 1/20/23, left voicemails, and no one answered. I sent an email to the San Diego County YMCA with no response. After four days of antihistamines for the pool rash (only on torso under swim shirt because I was covered with zinc oxide from head to toe), and I called the Ecke again this morning (5 days later). No one answered, and I left more voicemails. Pools containing feces must be shut. So, I called the County of San Diego Health to report the Ecke YMCA pool. After, I received a return phone call from the YMCA which denied culpability (claimed noone has complained) and canceled my membership. I asked for the Aquatics Manager's extension (the one online is wrong), called it, and no one answered. The pool needs to be emptied and cleaned. Left 2 stars so people would read. The YMCA rep actually said that he received compliments on the cleanliness of the pool. I didn't add that there was a large bandaid stuck to the the pool and hair and mucus floating. The Executive Director, Lauren Hall had her assistant return my call six days later about feces in the swimming pool

This gym used to be great but has really gone down hill in the last couple of years. The hours have been cut significantly, they closed a well used area of the gym and now rent it out to random fitness companies that cost money for members to use, they made the masters swimming cost money when it has always been free to members (and have lost a lot of people over this) and with all of this "cost cutting" somehow memberships have gone up quite a bit.
The only good thing I have to say is that the maintenance and cleaning staff are very nice and do a great job.
I hope the administration realize that this penny pinching model is ruining the San Diego YMCAs reputation and driving people to use other gyms.

Annoying, inconvenient hours (for many SD YMCA locations, not just this one), poor customer service, and too expensive for what you’re getting. My membership increased in price less than a month after I signed up & I wasn’t notified by Ecke YMCA staff that this would happen when I signed up.
Most other gym memberships would be a better value than an adult membership here.

I wish I could say I loved this place, but in all reality it’s just “OK”. They have raised rates twice in the last year on existing members. Typically I have been given a fixed rate when going to a gym, and established members were shown some priority. The facilities are also “OK”. Pretty dated locker rooms with aging equipment, dim lighting, and a crowded “hallway” is used for a functional training area. It doesn’t really create an environment that I enjoy being in. I have worked out at Fit and 24hour before this place, and have to say that their facilities are somewhere below 24hour. You do get access to classes, a basketball court and a swimming pool which is why the rates are higher than a Chuz or 24hour, but the facilities here are honestly dated and give a dirty feeling (I wash my hands after working out, and they are FILTHY, lots of dirt picked up from weights and mats) The hours are another part that is “OK”, they close at 8 and even earlier on the weekends. I’m really left wondering if all of this is worth $65 a month. In the end I may keep coming here for the convenience of location, but wish there was a better, closer option to choose from in the area.

For some time now many of my friends have competed in the Tuesday Mens Soccer League 18+.

The past couple of seasons the referees have become very biased against people of color and it clearly shows. They act unprofessional on the field and allow teams to make the calls that they need. At times, they do not watch the game and they wait for a reaction to see how badly a player was hurt in order to make a call.

A few weeks ago a player took an elbow to the head which was an intentional hit, and the other person was not ejected. This player had a concussion and could not see out of his right eye for a couple of minutes.

There is constant carelessness in these leagues from the referees. No professionalism is present and there are zero consequences for very dangerous actions.

If you want to know the truth about how this place is ran, pay attention to the one star reviews.

Been coming here for sports, adventure guides, swim, arena sports and every year they get less and less friendly and although no major facility improvements or infrastructure changes their prices go up and up, makes you wonder where the money is going. But not the first time thats been asked.....

Definitely not impressed Ecke, I don't think the founders or the donors pictured this type of program, lackluster outreach and downright nasty people working for them. The further way from the front desk you get the more abasive and rude they get.

Case in point I needed to walk from the arena parking lot through to pick my son up from swim, a woman was at the door and instead of letting me walk the 20 ft she said I had to drive or walk to the other side of the bldg and come in thru the main entrance and was all kinds of nasty about it. I can see that in the height of covid but now, come on get real.

I challenge you to get real with your community, return on the investment we all have made with you by pouring our money and kids and time into your branch and be real, common sense, nice, cordial, accepting and understanding we might get back to the Ecke inception back in the late 1980s.

Guarantee Todd and Jonathan don't know how their folks are acting, I can't think they would keep them around if they did. For God sakes be better.

The YMCA as an organization did not handle the pandemic well. When they were completely closed they asked members to continue to pay and deduct it on our taxes. We did. They raised our family rate (6 children) to $92 and then by the end of 2021, to $99 plus $20 more for family members 18 and over. Then to reserve a swimming lane, a $5 fee was added. Our monthly rate went to about $160 a month if I wanted to reserve the lap pool twice a week. We cancelled our membership and joined an exclusive resort, Morgan Run in Rancho Santa Fe for $230 monthly and now have a state-of-the-art gym (no waiting), pool (no one is excluded from water aerobics as YMCA), dining and event privileges, spa services at a discount and a better class of members who comply with gym etiquette.

I’ve been a member for over 4 years now and can say that I cherish my time at the ymca. I get a great work out. The staff and instructors are nice and accommodating. I’ve read some negative reviews on here and can say that I’m saddened by them. Really if you are following the rules there is no reason for a bad review. Your workout is what you make of it. Life is so full of drama that I enjoy coming to the gym to work out and getting in a good sweat or a calming yoga/ stretch class. There can only be drama if you create it. So if you are reading this please give the ymca a chance. Really servicing that many people each day you aren’t going to please everyone. Fortunately, my experience has been life changing for me here. I thank all staff and instructors for the hard work and time that they give us.

I witnessed this morning - the ymca staff harassing judging poor members here who are fire victims, paid members who leave their car parked overnight to go to work and come in morning to work out walk the tracks outside. They called the police on my friends 2 times in the same day, without speaking to my friends about some assumed problem they claimed my friends did, and they did nothing wrong at all. I have known Raj and Samia for 3 months, met them at the ymca and have helped them. They have helped so many, is great to know them. I usually do not give reviews, but they harmed Samia Raj and they are verified red cross fire victims, who got hurt by the ymca corporate staff. I thought the y was about good christian principles and trained their staff to be god like. Very disappointed to see hear that the ymca staff are making poor judgments of assumption by, terrorizing good christians like raj and samia.

We heard the YMCA EMPLOYEES re recording of events. Just because you can not see into somebodies home, temple, and/or van that is private protected property, so no PEEPING TOMS CAN STEAL OR PEEP INSIDE- is nothing suspicious about that its called being responsible for own public private safety.and for 3 months. This assumption problem YMCA has created a mistake on false reporting, manipulating the public to believe that is suspicious van, only because a YMCA EMPLOYEE CAN NOT SEE IN, WHY DID HE APPROACH a peaceful temple to look to see if he could peep n tom inside a home, its recorded YMCA did approach van, could not see in it, YMCA CAN'T SEE IN VAN AND THAT SUSPICIOUS- YET YMCA APPROACHES VAN AND NOW CLAIMS THE VAN IS SUSPICIOUS BECAUSE YMCA CAN NOT SEE IN IT? YMCA claimed that not seeing someone come out of van in morning, while they are involved in a carpool, is suspicious? Why not putting a harmless note on the vehicle to speak to whose church temple private aka VAN, your member Samia, your boss, that you wanted to know more about them? You recorded to Samia, that is no problem parking overnight, to keep Samia temple safe and no break ins. You said 24 hour parking is o.k. and to make sure Samia moves her van every 24 hours. Why call police, when Samia calmly was trying to solve that YMCA RECORDED she could carpool park overnight as a member- it is not on any agreement that I have, that states YMCA CORPORATION IS AGAINST OVERNIGHT PARKING TO SAVE THE PLANET AND CARPOOL. YMCA RECORDED: that there is no PUBLIC OR MEMBER NOTICE THAT STATES OVER NIGHT PARKING IS PROHIBITED, NOR THAT a car home is suspicious if YMCA PEEPING TOMS - are not able to see inside a car. YMCA RECORDED: their policy code call police on members, when members are asking YMCA to show them proof of the claims they make against members. Is it against YMCA POLICY TO REPORT HARM MADE TO YMCA MEMBERS, BY YMCA EMPLOYEES? NO NOTICE ANYWHERE ON ANY AGREEMENTS OF NO OVERNIGHT PARKING, NOR A PUBLIC NOTICE THAT YMCA IS ANTI CARPOOL AND ANTI OVERNIGHT PARKING ITS NOT POSTED. NOR THAT VISITING FRIENDS FAMILY AND MEMBERS AT YMCA IS LOITERING. Us private YMCA members have noticed, hypocritical, manipulation of reporting recordings to Samia, the Police, other YMCA members/employees. Breaking the 10 commandments, to protect a certain TITLE OF A DIRECTOR/IDOLS OF YMCA: IS ONLY ONE EMPLOYEE OF devilish actions, harming members, PUBLICLY HARMING YMCA CORPORATION AS AN MASKED IDOL FALSE WITNESS GEOFF MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR now it is publicly recorded noticed as YMCA copyright patent SM TM potomac declaration infringement of protected intellectual property registered artworks Samia holds dear her religious beliefs, of reporting devilish masked YMCA DIRECTOR INFRINGEMENT SLAVERY- forced by YMCA EMPLOYEE upon peaceful Samia. We will pay the lawyers fees to expose this publicly.

GEOFF, just because a memner asks you to prove your claims you made RECORDING as false against her- does not give you authority to harrass a little girl and call tue cops because you lied about a member Samia.

Don't come here unless you want to be treated like a criminal! Also don't come here if you have young kids! It's $69 for one adult plus kids in order to use their "free" childcare. But they will call you to come get your baby if she cries for longer than 10 minutes. God forbid your baby cry when they are in an unfamiliar setting! You're only going to go to the gym at most a few times a week so it'll take a long time before your baby will be comfortable enough to not cry. Also, the daycare closes for "cleaning" at 2pm for an hour or two so no working out then either.

Don't take your kids swimming here either. If there are any swim lessons going on at all, they will not let you be in the pool. Even if the lesson takes place in the shallow end and you are in the deep end nowhere near the other people.

The shower area for kids is the worst part. It's immediately inside the entrance to the pool with NO curtains whatsoever. Anyone and everyone will see you and your kids showering. Also it's freezing in there everytime someone opens the door to the outside. The worst part is the showers have no water pressure whatsoever and are lukewarm. Imagine taking 45 mins trying to rinse the shampoo and conditioner off yourself, a baby girl and toddler girl in lukewarm water that's barely trickling out while men are walking in and out on a cold rainy day.

So the next time I took my daughters to the women's shower. No one had told me nor did I see signs that children are PROHIBITED from the women's showers. In the middle of showering, an employee came and told us we couldn't shower there. I told them the kids showers have no water pressure and my kids were getting cold over there, that we were in the middle of showering, can we just finish showering? A second employee comes over and said "You can go home and shower". !!!!! Meanwhile, my 3 year old is asking mommy why do we have to leave and there's still soap in my hair! The first employee is STILL STANDING RIGHT BESIDE US MAKING SURE WE LEAVE like criminals getting escorted out of a store!

I give one star for the classes which were great. I took Zumba and gentle yoga Monday evening, and both instructors were amazing .
It was my first time attending this location . I will not be returning due to the little to non existing help I received with calling in to ask for help on a lost item . Front desk said nobody could help me and “ You’re going to have to come back and find it yourself”. I then proceeded to explain the that if I lived closer last night I would’ve driven back to look for it myself , but I live a distance away north and it would’ve been a hassle for my preschooler and I . Hope with this review they create an efficient and helpful way to handle lost and found calls to members. Will choose service at my local Y . At least they have been able to politely help me with past lost and found items.

The basketball courts are nice. As is the pool. The buildings don’t have enough windows to let in natural light. This is an architectural flaw. As the building isn’t positioned or designed to take advantage of the natural geographic features of its location either. The ocean views and skylines are missing. The facility should be renovated in several phases to update the dated architecture and interiors. The staff is very friendly and helpful A plus. The vibe is easy going and family focused The ages range from seniors to preschool.

An amazingly well equipped gym, feat. a great pool, saunas, co-ed jacuzzi, and fantastic instructors. I especially love the yoga classes. Head upstairs if the cardio room is packed. However, if you're looking to unwind and focus on your workout: kids. are. everywhere.

I am so very satisfied with all that this YMCA offers! When my children were younger, they both attended the quality preschool program. They had good experiences with youth sports, as well. Now, we all enjoy the huge variety of classes and workout equipment for a fraction of the cost of a four-person membership elsewhere.! The atmosphere always has a positive vibe for us, and we are thankful for the gift of having such a great facility in our community!

Great staff, service, equipment , and value.

I switched to the YMCA after a corporate gym continued to raise my dues each year, making it harder to afford. I started at the Y in Mission Valley, which was small, but still great, but after moving I found myself without a gym membership for some time. Eventually, I found Ecke Family YMCA and started going here. This is not the top of the line cutting edge gym, but I got a secret for you it's a heck of a lot better than the majority of corporate gyms out there and it costs much less as well. Newer and clean equipment make it an ideal environment for focusing on your health. An added bonus? Because the Y is family friendly, it is much less focused on the workout floor being a performance stage for the "Look at me" clientele who's workout grunts and yells can be heard for miles away from every corporate gym in America. So you like classes, let me tell you about classes! There are tons of classes at this Y, i'm not joking I have never been to a gym with the number of classes they have each hour, it's insane. I have only been going to the Ecke Family Y for a short period of time, but I am beyond impressed. If you are someone who is interested in getting your health and wellness on track at a place with a friendly staff, a clean environment, and at an affordable price. You have found your new gym.

My first time was disappointing to say the least, the staff is not helpful at all. It was difficult to get a staff member who actually knew what is going on and knowledgeable enough to helpful with the schedules and directing us to correct child care.

My experience was not good !
1 -they said no electronics but when I got there all the kids had their cell phones
2. i spent $13 on crazy socks for crazy socks day and that never happened!
3. they said we were going to the wild animal Park that cost alot but they pulled a fast one on us the day before and they told us we were going to a free bowling place instead.
4. they said they would give us T-shirts to tie-dye and they never did.
I am very disappointed in the Ecke YMCA.

My how things have changed over the years. I remember coming here 20 years ago. Before the skate park/ramps, before the preschool, before the soccer fields and the south entrance/lot or before the north one's expansion. It was 2 indoor pools, 1 lap and 1 diving with a high dive and concrete locker rooms. I'd come back every few years and see a new building, a new feature until I started coming here for co-ed soccer, which is great fun. I'll always remember taking swimming lessons here and honestly will probably take my kids here. It's a staple in the entire North County Community and despite the fact it's a YMCA it's, clean, bright and exactly what a YMCA is supposed to be unlike what you heard from that awful song.

It is great the 'Encinitas' YMCA has indoor adult women's soccer leagues, but only two referees ensure that the rules are adhered to. Many players have experienced injuries, most due to fouls and plays that are too aggressive. Complaints have been heard, but not addressed. Unfortunately, many players that are passionate about playing good and competitive soccer have left 'Encinitas' YMCA. Many of those currently playing are talking about leaving since they want to have fun, but not get hurt.
