As someone who has gone to The Strength Co. off and on since August 2018, I highly recommend this place if you want a personal training experience at a more affordable price (the prices are the same as when I started, which is amazing!). Coach Brad and Jeff are great and have helped me get my numbers back to where they were pre-COVID.
I now have a squat rack at home (a memento to their other location in Villa Park, which has since closed) and am trying out a different gym closer to my house, but the guidance I have received from The Strength Co. has been invaluable. I may return one day, but until then, continue to participate in their events with the friends I have made along the way.

Want to Get Strong? If your young, or a bit older like me, this is the place. After a bit of a hiatus from Starting Strength, I decided to re-engage. Met with Brad Muhlenkamp for a private session to clean-up my form. WOW, I learned a lot. He straightened out my squat, deadlift and overhead press. Brad was technical, but super easy to understand. His drawings on the whiteboard really helped. Being 62 years old, I have a life of athletic "aches and pains" but Brad easily dealt with those issues and started me on program that will accomplish my goals. Really looking forward to training with Brad and the staff at The Strength Company.

I ordered Iron plates from The Strength Co. The quality is great, the tolerance on the plates is however too tight in my case. I bought them to use on my new Smith machine and barbell. They seem to fit fine on the barbell, however they are extremely tight on the Smith machine barbell, the 35# plates did not fit at all. It is weird that all other plates fit just not the 35s. When I emailed customer service regarding this they responded with their tolerance amount of .02 I then responded that it is only the 35s that are affected and that maybe it is just this batch but then they ghosted me and never responded instead of trying to find a resolution hence the 3 star.

I recently relocated to Orange County and was looking for a gym to continue my strength training journey. Being in my mid-50's and having experienced the benefits of lifting (heavy) for the past two years, finding the right gym and trainer was a top priority. The Strength Co. was the perfect place! Not only do they have the right equipment and atmosphere, the coaches are available, approachable, and willing to help you meet your goals. I have been training with Brad Muhlenkamp for the past couple of months, and although it's not been easy, my progress has been steady and impressive. If you're looking to transform your body (especially later in life), and have the right mindset and work ethic, The Strength Co. is the place for you.

I’ve been to The Strength Co twice in person — once for the Intro to Barbells with Grant and most recently for Starting Training Camp of squat and deadlift with Connor and Jeff (with an uncredited assist from Brad). Everything was fantastic!
With any gym, I look at equipment and people--TSC is great on both. The gym has plenty of room, plates and a bunch of squat racks (of their own design) that are secure and easy to work with. I’ve gotten great coaching from everyone I’ve connected with.
I know that the pricing’s higher than some expect, but you get two things for that: 1) better equipment that’s there when you need it (every session at my current gym starts with a hunt for 5 and 2.5lb plates and an open bench on bench days) and 2) the coaching is better by leaps and bounds than any of the personal trainers I’ve worked with.
My only regret is that I don't live close enough to go more often, so if you’re on the fence--just go.

I love this gym ☺️❤️💪🏾
Open gym is wonderful because I'm guaranteed to get a barbell rack all to myself. Often I have the whole gym to myself during open gym hours which I love.
The group coached classes are also really great. The coaches are knowledgeable and encouraging and the environment is very friendly. Everyone is trying to get stronger than they were yesterday. 10/10 recommend!

I just picked up two of the 45lb plates and shipping was fast. The quality of these plates are top notch and pricing is fantastic. I highly recommend them. I plan on picking up a lot more in the smaller weights. Great job Strength Co on providing a quality Made in USA product! Keep rolling out some more Made in USA products.

I am over 65 and starting barbell training over 4 years ago at the recommendation of a close friend. I have read Starting Strength, 3d ed, and The Barbell Prescription cover to cover. I thought I knew what I was doing but thought it was time to get a form check and learn from a Strength-certified coach. I took a two hour Intro to Barbells session from Coach Brad. Best money I ever spent and I would recommend anyone serious about training to do the same. Brad was exceptional. Thorough, precise, knowledgeable, patient, and well-versed in the craft. Brad corrected so many form errors that I have lost count and he provided so many useful setup techniques I feel so much more confidant going heavy, getting the most out of each lift, and not injuring myself. One the biggest takeaways was I was using a 4 in wide lifting belt which was impeding correct form during the squat and could have ultimately led to some cracked lower ribs. For my frame and rib structure, I should have been using a 3 in wide one. Many thanks for taking the time to get me straight and allow me to continue my barbell strength training safely, for further strength gains, and for as long as I am able.

My son and I took an opportunity to check out the gym in Costa Mesa while vacationing in SoCal. I have been doing online Coaching with Grant for some time and I'm a big fan of The Strength Co.'s barbells and weight plates, so I figured it would be fun to make a pilgrimage to the mothership. We arrived early in the afternoon on a weekday and almost had the place to ourselves. It's a clean and well-thought-out barbell facility with everything you need (and nothing you don't) for serious strength training. It's pretty cool to work out in a gym completely outfitted in Strength Co. equipment. My son and I had so much fun we lost track of time and stayed long enough to meet several of the other members and one of the other coaches. It's a great community, and I would sign-up for in-person classes if I lived near by.

I reached out to Grant Broggi to ask if he could get me set up with a Starting Strength Coach to teach me how to Power Clean. He set me up with Jeff H., and Jeff was a really good coach. He not only taught me the power clean, but he went through the other barbell lifts with me, and gave me very important cues to go over to help progress the lifts.
This gym is a great facility with great people. If you're on the fence about coming in, just do it! It will change your life.

I was visiting Irvine CA for 1 day and took the opportunity to book a session at the Starting Strength Co. gym.
I had a great experience when I visited on June 21st. The gym has a no-nonsense vibe that’s perfect if you're serious about getting stronger. It’s well-equipped and clean, with everything you need to focus on your lifts. There is no "bro" intimidation or "bro" vibe here. It seems everyone is welcome and I certainly felt welcome, which is important as gyms can be intimidating for the newbie.
Connor and Marco were the coaches I worked with, and they were awesome. It was unexpected but great to have 2 coaches present.
They really took the time to help me refine my squat and deadlift, and press.I have noticed improvements in my form since.
They even got me something to eat from their car as I did not have time to eat prior to my appointment with them🥰
Their coaching was on point—clear, patient, and super helpful. They made sure I understood what I needed to do to improve, and they were supportive throughout. Additionally, they are clearly skilled teachers and they are clearly very passionate about helping folks learn to strength train.
If you're looking to get stronger and want some expert guidance, I definitely recommend checking out this gym. Connor and Marco know their stuff and made a big difference in my training.
I wish there was a Starting Strength Gym near me.
I am now deadlifting 152 x 3x 5

If you want to get stronger in a methodical, science based and safe way, this is the gym to join. My husband and I have been a member for a month now and after having a wonderful experience, have decided to continue for a second month. In a short time we’ve hit PR’s that I never thought possible. Major shout out to coach Brad. Just do yourself a favor and join his class.

Plates are excellently machined, perfectly within spec, look great and made in the USA! Customer service is amazing as well. Had a few questions and concerns regarding delivery. I attended a Squat and Deadlift training camp. 9 people total split and trained by 2 coaches which made it very time efficient. Grant and Brad did an awesome job coaching and walking us through the applied Starting Strength principles. They are very experienced coaches. Barbell gym setup made it quick and easy to setup different heights and weights. I am looking forward to checking out the gym again to get more coaching.

If you want to get strong or stronger, this is your place. Top notch gym and instruction. I did a Starting Strength day camp with Grant & Brad. It was also great how they talked about the why (enjoying life while getting older) and the what (importance of sleep, rest, and nutrition) not just the how (proper form and program for squats and deadlifts).

I've always avoided weights. As a slender guy of 60+ years, with a rebuilt knee and previously injured back, I was unsure whether weightlifting would help or hurt. Within three months I'm already deadlifting my body weight, and my squat is not far behind. Best of all, my back is stronger and less painful than ever! Zero-impact, progressive loading works! The coaches are skilled, and fellow lifters are all welcoming and supportive. Try it!

I took an intro to barbells class with Jeff.
I'm a skinny guy with not much weightlifting experience, and I was nervous walking in. Jeff made sure I felt comfortable the entire time, explained every concept in detail, and answered every question I had.
I got the sense this gym genuinely cares about seeing people get stronger, and not just trying to sell you something. Since I live in San Diego, I saw the class as a one-time thing as it was too far for me to regularly go to, but I'm happy to say I was offered options for dropping into the gym if I'm ever in the area at a VERY reasonable price.
Cannot recommend enough. Jeff knew his stuff, and I now feel more confident about my weightlifting journey ahead!

Excellent experience. This was exactly what I was looking for. Training by myself for the last few years has let degradations in my technique on the three major lifts (Squat, Bench, Deadlift) creep in over time. I received clear corrections on every lift that I can now apply in my training.
Great balance of instruction and application. Highly recommended. I’ll definitely be back.

I recently attended lifting camp with coaches Grant , Brayden , Connor and had an amazing experience. As someone who has been going to a commercial gym I came to The Strength Co with little knowledge of barbell lifts and a goal of becoming stronger and lifting safely. The Strength Co. team did an excellent job of coaching me on squats, deadlifts, and press. They were supportive, gave me useful information, and were very knowledgeable on what they were coaching. It was a fun experience lifting and learning alongside others of different ages and training backgrounds. With only one session, I left The Strength Co much more confident and comfortable when getting under the bar.

After barbell training on/off for a few years with less than ideal progress, I decided to take the Intro to Barbell course at the Strength Co. In a 2 hour session I was able to correctly re-learn how to squat, deadlift, and press. Since then, I've been training a few times a week at the Strength Co in a class setting and have already seen major improvements in my form. No more lower back pain from deadlifting incorrectly and no more knee pain from squatting incorrectly. The coaching is top notch and the environment is friendly and supportive. Definitely recommend it.

Want to get STRONG but not sure how?? Get to The Strength Co. Take a class, you won’t regret it.
I’m old (58) with a litany of injuries that make lifting difficult and no formal training in the squat, press or deadlift. Grant, Jeff, Ron ,and Brayden took me and a class of men and women from across the lifting spectrum and trained us to execute the lifts safely and effectively.
They did this with knowledge, experience and culture. Their knowledge and experience guided us through the technical aspects of the lifts and around out sticking points. But it’s the culture of achievement and personal accountability Grant has fostered, that make this place unique. This isn’t a gym that is intimidating, it’s a gym that is inspiring. Get to a class and see for yourself.

I have been following Coach Grant from Strength Co for several months on Twitter and YouTube. I have wanted to attend one of his barbell camps but the dates never worked with my bad back and my schedule since I have to fly out. Well, since my back has been good, today’s camp jived nicely with my schedule, so I flew to Strength Co from CO. What a wonderful day. After today I now know that there is nothing, nothing, like working with a coach in person. Coach Grant and his team were simply remarkable. These guys helped me (and sooo many others) tremendously. I saw it over and over today. The camp was sold out, and though the camp lasted 4 hours I could have gone another 4 hours. Seriously, talk about not wanting to leave! The day was remarkable. Highly recommend.

I had a great experience attending the ‘beginning of the year’ training seminar at the Strength Co. in Costa Mesa. My wife and I both attended the seminar, and the coaching staff was both welcoming and professional. Coach Broggi’s talent for teaching and explaining the methods was awesome, and his personality’s larger than life and motivating. Coaches Brayden and Conor were also excellent to work with!Regrettably I currently live in North County SD, and I would be unable to become a full time member. But I will be likely utilizing some form of online coaching, and their drop in services as much as possible. I would highly recommend The Strength Co to any and all looking to improve their quality of life with Strength. Best of luck under the bar!

If Grant & Breyden had told me that after only 9 months of working with The Strength Co I would be able to go from not knowing how to do a deadlift to comfortably pulling 210 lbs I would not have believed them. I am 65 years old and have never considered myself athletic. The program works. And the support I have gotten has been terrific. Last week they sponsored a very fun "Turkey Pull" where folks challenged themselves doing 3 rounds of deadlifts. I wonder if next year we will do "Turkey Squats". If you live in Orange County & you want to Powerlift, this is the gym for you.

The Strength Co. was the best use of my time and money to get stronger and healthier in 2022.
All of the coaches are highly educated on strength training and have helped me make strength gains I didn't think I could make in only 9 months. My one rep maxes at this time are now:
Overhead Press 245 lbs
Bench Press 315 lbs
Squat 495 lbs
Deadlift 545 lbs
In addition, I saw positive body recomposition over time. I lost 20 lbs, went down from a 44" to 36" belt, and still went up a shirt size because my chest/shoulders got bigger.
The best part of training at the Strength Co. were the coaches. Every one of them are friendly, encouraging, and engaged in your training. No mindless rep counters or disinterested time wasters here. Their community is big part of why I made the 90 minute commute there and back, twice a week!
Thank you to Grant and all the other coaches! When I am back in California, you guys are my #1 go-to gym.

My wife and I attended the training camp coached by Grant Broggi and Michael Minigell on 9/24/2022 at Grant's Costa Mesa gym. Grant and Michael have years of coaching Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength program and they have coached thousands of lifters for more than a decade with good results. I have been training the three main lifts (Deadlift, Press, and Squat) for more than 6 months now watching YT videos but there is absolutely no substitute for live coaching. Grant and Mike were able to give me good feedback on my form and that is going to make a huge difference in how much more I can lift without injuring myself. My wife had never in her life performed any of these lifts. She was skeptical of the entire training as we had to drive 14 hours back and forth to Los Angeles from our home. By the end of the day she was able to do all three lifts and walked away with the confidence and conviction to add weightlifting to her training regime. It was really worth our time!
I highly recommend people Grant and Mike's training camp whenever it happens next and/or taking advantage of their personal online coaching. The gym is clean and equipped with multiple racks and has a clean bathroom as well as a water cooler which was a life saver. No issues finding parking in the mall or the parking lot in the next building.

I signed up for The Strength Co’s/Grant’s “Intro to Barbells” this last week.
I’m active and “in shape” but I haven’t lifted free weights in decades, and probably never did it properly.
The session was great. Lots of info explaining the theory and reason for why they do what they do. Grant broke down what he saw, showed me video and made a plan for next steps.
Gyms can be an intimidating place when you don’t know what you’re doing, but my experience was exactly what I needed. Lots of info, no judgment.
I’ll be back to Strength Co to learn the right way, and take that knowledge to my home gym when I’m ready (with Strength Co equipment of course. Made in USA epicness).
Big thank you Grant, see you again soon!

Grant, the owner of this gym, answered the phone "What do you want Fu#ker"
I called this gym because my sister is looking for a gym membership in Costa Mesa. As the phone was ringing we were having a conversation and did not realize Strength Co had picked up the phone. He was on loud speaker and interrupted us by saying "What do you want Fu#ker" at first I wasn't sure if I heard him right. My brother asked me in the room, "Did he just curse?" "Yes, I did; what do you want?," Grant replied.
I was calling about getting a gym membership, but not anymore. I hung up. As a business owner, even if I believed someone was wasting my time on a phone call I always remain polite and professional. There is no excuse for this behavior, regardless of situation.

I started training here about a month ago and I keep coming back multiple times per week despite the long commute (1-2 hrs each way, depending on traffic), because there's no gym closer to me that compares. But this isn't just the best gym in SoCal... Having trained at about a dozen gyms across three continents, The Strength Co is the best out of all of them. No question.

I have had such a positive experience at Strength Co.! I typically don't like going to the gym because it feels like everyone judges each other, and it just is not a fun place to workout. However, I have only felt encouraged and excited at Strength Co and keep wanting to go back! The atmosphere there is very welcoming and everyone I've met is more than willing to help me learn. I totally recommend this gym for anyone looking to increase their strength in a fun and motivating environment. Even after only the first two work outs I feel much more confident in my ability to lift in an effective way. I now feel like I know my way around a gym, and I can't wait to continue progressing.

I trained three times at The Strength Co. this week while I was in LA for work, and I can't wait to go back! They have seven Rogue R-3 racks, Rogue B&R bars, York plates. However, what makes The Strength Co. great is not the equipment (as great as it is), but the people, both trainees and coaches. Everyone made me feel super welcome from the moment I set foot in the door. I'm currently training with an online coach, but I like to get live eyes on my lifts whenever I'm in a town with a Starting Strength Coach. Grant and Mike are top notch coaches. I look forward to training with them again next time I'm in LA!

I have been a member since October 2017. Everything about Grant Broggi and his gym; The Strength Co is a Class Act! I was new to Barbell weight lifting and from day one Grant had me at the "Intro" . I soon realized not only are we getting stronger every week but it's truly an entire body workout while being coached along the way to make sure our form and technique are spot on!. The coaches are AMAZING; organized, experienced, smart, encouraging, motivating and strong AF!
And the best part about The Strength Co are all of the members; they are super cool, friendly, supportive and fun to workout with. I wouldn't go to any other gym but this one!!! Grant, Dylan, Michael & Niki.........ROCK!

I began training at The Strength Co on 12/1/17. I attended an intro lesson and was immediately impressed by the facility and coaching. The starting strength program works. I’ve gained 30 pounds of body weight and have almost doubled my squat. I feel stronger and my joints are better for it. I’m 35 years old and feel better than I have in years. Grant, Dylan, and Mike are excellent coaches. If you want to become strong and be surrounded by good people this is the place to train.

Cool little private gym, with some pretty cool trainers. Just be aware of their practice of automatic recurring monthly charges.
Here was my experience.
I reached out to this gym to get some coaching on my lifts. In response I was instructed to go to their website, sign up for an account, and schedule an appointment. A credit card was required.
I had seen a different ssc a few years back in LA and their was no account sign up required or anything like that. With that coach I made an appointment through email and showed up to the appointment cash in hand. The strength co, however, is involved in the practice of automatic monthly recurring charges. Remember, I only wanted one private session.
Long story short, I was charged for membership fees for 2 months after my session. I was able to stop this on the 3rd from happening by switching my credit card to a prepaid card that had no money on it.
My advice would be this. If you want to sign up to a monthly gym this isn't a bad one at all, a bit expensive but not unreasonable.
If you only want a private session, this is also not a bad gym for that either, just don't sign up for an account on their website. Refuse to give any credit card info and instead just tell the staff you only deal in cash.
Another option would be, if you have one, only provide a prepaid card. The gym can continue charging that card if they like, but they wont get anything from it if you haven't loaded any money on it.

The Strength Co in Costa Mesa, CA, is definitely a winner. I’ve been training there for almost 2 months. While I was impressed from my first exposure to The Strength Co, I wanted to give it a good try before writing a review. It is the first gym experience that I’ve had in over 40 years of resistance training that combines clear objectives, intelligent programming, expert-lead individualized training, and a motivating and collegial “team” environment to train in. Those first 2 elements – clear objectives and intelligent programming – are a result of Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength enterprise, of which The Strength Co is a franchise. The foundation of the Starting Strength methodology is the simple truth that building strength is accessible and one of the healthiest priorities any person can have independent of whether or not that person can already lift a truck or is pretty much completely deconditioned or weak due to injury, a sedentary lifestyle, age, etc., and all gray areas in between those extremes. The Starting Strength methodology is well documented and distills down the science of increasing strength through basic and proven incrementally increased resistance training for novice, intermediate and advanced athletes.
To bridge the gap between good science and rubber-meets-the-road healthy, effective weight training, only rigorously trained and qualified people become designated as Starting Strength Coaches (SSC). Coach Grant Broggi received that “SSC” designation about 2 years ago after having much success in increasing strength in U.S. Marines with the Starting Strength methodology. (Coach Grant remains on active duty with the Marines.) With the SSC designation, Coach Grant started training civilians in the Starting Strength methodology and eventually opened The Strength Co to serve the civilian market in Orange County. Coach Dylan Cherin also has a passion for the same system of resistance training and has had tremendous personal success in using the Starting Strength methodology and teaches classes at The Strength Co. Coaches Grant and Dylan are involved with helping all trainees perfect their form in the lifts (an ongoing process) and in determining programming for each person. Every “work” set and lift is coached for the 7 members in a class helping each lifter towards better form, keeping them healthy and progressing towards the real objective of greater strength.
I mentioned 7 people in each class: Each works at their own training platform with rig, barbell and weights. This seems to work out perfectly in terms of allowing athletes time to recover between work sets and letting the coach make a circuit to be involved with each athlete’s work set. We’re all there for one primary objective and that bleeds into wanting to see your fellow athletes hit their marks. That leads to a lot of appreciation and encouragement for each person training and a great sense of team even though lifting is an individualized activity. And while there is a productive sense of focus in the training groups of 7, the people making up these groups traverse a broad range of physical abilities and opportunities, sizes, ages, genders, senses of humor, etc., and the personalities ring through. There’s plenty of laughs and camradarie through the training sessions. Indeed there is no sign of the drudgery of globo-gym type “exercise” at The Strength Co.
Obviously, I’m a devoted fan of The Strength Co and I feel very lucky to have followed a path to it’s door. I’m really impressed with Coach Grant’s creation of The Strength Co and I anticipate to continue gaining in my own strength quest there for a long time to come. It’s a very scalable model and there’s room for anybody that has a desire for a healthy increase in strength in their life.

Great program and very attentive coaches. Grant clearly knows his stuff. The equipment is top notch and very clean. During my session, he also had a person that was new to lifting all together, his coaching was very adaptable to both types of lifters focusing on each person's unique needs. They have a Dead-lift jack! I've never see one before - I will say it saves your strength for the lifts.

Positive environment, attentive coaching, efficient program.
Big edge this gym has is that the instructors are certified Starting Strength Coaches. So the lifts are coached to the program model, and the instructors are comfortable talking about the various nuances of the lifts and lift selection. Coaches are very articulate and the feedback is precise and not overwhelming. Found coaching on the Press particularly helpful. Likewise I have personally avoided any weird tweaks. With other gym goers, Coaches have seemed pretty capable at adapting the program or lifts as needed for their specific physique.
Facility is pretty new. Parking is fine. Crowd is pretty diverse with a wide range of ages and physiques. Culture is good. Pace of progress pretty satisfying.
