I’ve been a loyal Planet Fitness member for over 20 years. My original home gym was in East Haven, which was a spacious, two-floor facility that I loved. When I transferred to the Amity location in New Haven, the transition was a bit tough the space is much smaller and more limited. The staff at this gym are consistently friendly and genuinely helpful, I truly appreciate their positive attitude and willingness to assist.

Recently, my fiancée and I returned from a few weeks abroad, only to walk into what felt like a completely different gym. While I fully support upgrades and new equipment, it’s frustrating when major layout or equipment decisions are made by people who clearly don’t use this location or understand its day-to-day challenges.

As I’ve mentioned before, space at Amity is already tight. My fiancée and I typically come after work, around 6–6:30 PM one of the busiest times of the day. During this time, the gym is packed, often with large groups of students from Southern, many of whom use multiple machines at once without much regard for gym etiquette. It becomes nearly impossible to complete a workout efficiently.

Given all this, I’m baffled by some of the recent equipment changes. Why would you remove the 2 hip abductor machines & the 2 hip adductors and leave only one that does both? Why cut the already limited number of cable machines, especially the one in front of the free weights, which is constantly in use? Now there’s a line just to use basic equipment it’s turning into chaos.

I genuinely care about this gym and want it to be a space that works for everyone, but these recent changes have made it incredibly difficult to get a proper workout. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and reconsiders the current setup.

Friendly staff. The actual gym is a little tight but has all you need. What's perfect too is that around 630am it's not too crowded to lift weights or do some cardio.

Lockers are small but that's okay.. everything seems clean (like bathroom/shower) and over all: I think if you're serious about lifting and losing weight but not wanting to be bothered, I'd suggest this gym.

This gym also has a few local transit buses that stop in the parking lot about 100 yards from the gym. So you'd walk from Stop and Shop to Planet Fitness, both in the same massive parking lot.. Taco Bell here too so if that suits you then grab some breakfast altho protein shakes are a better option

Absolutely disappointed with Planet Fitness, especially the New Haven location. I’m currently in Illinois and just want to cancel my membership. I spoke with Joe, supposedly the supervisor of the billing department, who claimed there’s no account linked to my phone number—even though it’s clearly listed in my membership agreement.

Instead of resolving the issue, he told me I need to physically come to Connecticut to cancel. Really? In 2025, with all the digital options available, they’re still trying to trap people with outdated, manipulative policies? It’s either pure incompetence or an intentional ploy to make cancellation as hard as possible.

This is exactly why I wouldn’t recommend Planet Fitness to anyone. Terrible support, shady practices, and staff who are either clueless or just don’t care. If you’re thinking about signing up—don’t. Save yourself the headache.

Decent Gym, But Room for Improvement

Planet Fitness is an affordable gym with plenty of equipment and a judgment-free atmosphere, which I appreciate. However, it can get very crowded during peak hours, making it hard to get on certain machines. The cleanliness is decent, but locker rooms could use more attention. Also, some locations lack heavier weights and more advanced equipment. Overall, it’s a good gym for basic workouts, but it may not be the best fit for everyone.

I took up a job in a different town from my own. I have the Black Membership Card which means I can go to whichever PF I want. So I went here after shift to decompress and it was quite nice. The person behind the desk was super nice and helpful. There were some machines that we don't have at my home PF.

Planet Fitness New Haven is my neighborhood gym, close to where I shop for groceries, etc. Desk staff are always helpful. I'm lucky to be able to choose times/days that aren't too crowded, so parking is easy. My fellow gym-rats are conscientious about cleaning their equipment, so even though most of us are maskless, I feel safe.

As far as Planet Fitness goes, this is an average location. It is not especially clean, although there are worse and better days.

Pros: they recently upgraded the equipment and it is rarely overcrowded.

Cons: It can be a little dirty, and the paper towel dispensers are often broken/empty which seems to dissuade people from wiping down equipment after use.

PF is super cheap, so if fitness is a checklist item and not something you spend much time doing during the week, this is a good option in the New Haven area.

This location isn't the same from the last time I visited. This used to be my main spot to come. The staff was friendly and the gym was very clean. Now the staff barely acknowledge you. They stand around talking amongst themselves, maybe that is why the gym isn't the cleanest. Bathrooms were disgusting and no one was wiping the machines down like they use to do. I pay almost $30 a month for this. Unacceptable yall have to do better.

Not LGBT+ friendly. A member at this gym called another member a slur. When management was asked to step in, there was no action on this matter by planet fitness. Planet fitness told the targeted member that they could cancel their membership, but for a fee. The targeted member ended up having their membership terminated as a result of this incident and the other member faced no recourse.

They also do not enforce mask guidelines.

Friendly staff and very clean facility. However ever since i signed up for the Black card membership i am not able to utilize the cardio are due to a air conditioning system issue.I almost fainted after 10 minutes on the stair master. The temperature in the cardio room was 78F which is extremely dangerous for cardio workout in a room with so many people.
I just wished they had notices so i wait until the AC is fixed and sign up. No one can give estimate date on when this issue will be resolved.

Very deceitful membership practices. The manager Jordan let’s the employees hire you at the classic rate and them bump to to famous Black Card with all sorts of early termination fees. Location is ok, better than many of the gross ones in NYC. Good selection of equipment, etc.
However, be careful of how the membership contract works: they will ONLY let you cancel IN PERSON or via CERTIFIED MAIL despite the global pandemic. They are requiring their members RISK THEIR LIVES to cancel membership, accruing membership fees continuously, "suspending membership" while closed then continuing to charge afterwards without options to safely cancel their memberships.

The Amity Planet Fitness crew are welcoming and cordial when I come to work out. The facility machines have been spaced out to promote natural distancing. There is plenty of cleanser and hand sanitizer to keep the machines wiped down before and after I visit each station. Honestly, I feel safer working out here than I do at the grocery store.

I have been a member of Planet Fitness Amity Road New Haven, Connecticut for ten years.
-as a result have seen many of the management come and go which can sometime be the case with gyms that are corporate.
I don't know the manager that well but clearly he does a good job because the gym is always beautifully clean and well kept.
But it is their Assistant Manager, Steve that I wanted to take the time to comment about.
Steve is a great Assistant Manager and would easily make a fantastic Manager.
He knows the importance of greeting you and smiling and being pleasant as this makes you feel welcome.
He takes the time to listen to you and knows the importance of being heard by an individual member and whatever is on their mind.
He is totally engaged in his job and clearly cares--and that comes through and makes all the difference in the world.
I wish Planet Fitness Amity would stop changing Managers and Assistant Managers every so often though.
It really does matter to most members to come in and see the same staff as it gives a more family type feel.
But whether Steve stays in Amity or goes elsewhere within the company, Plane Fitness is very fortunate indeed to have such a good employee.
His authenticity and genuineness shine through.
There is never the generic greeting with him. Like saying How are you but not really caring and just saying it mechanically. Steve cares.
I wouldn't even be taking the time to write this review if it weren't for the fact that I think he does an outstanding job and deserves it.
Another employee there--Brian is also a great guy and valuable asset to the company, as again-he always smiles and makes you feel welcome and most importantly, that it's genuine.
I hope the two of the stay at the Amity location, but if they do not and move within the company elsewhere, they will, again...be an asset wherever they go

The person working the guest counter was a bit rude this morning. After I checked in with my guest (I'm here visiting for a week), he asked just how often I was planning on coming there, in an abrupt tone of voice. I asked why it matters, and he was equally abrupt in telling me that I can only come 10 times because it's not my home franchise. Most other PF employees have been friendly and offered a solution rather criticism or rudeness. Guess he needs more training on their judgment free zone!

A lot of members dont wipe down their machines after use so you have to, and the cleaning agent to wipe the machines down smells/acts like its just plain water with blue food coloring in it which weirds me out...and my bf contracted ringworm after using one of the machines in this particular PF so we never went back.

Too HOT!! They need to put blinds on the front windows for incoming sun and lower the heat. Working out already creates enough body heat. They have a back room for 30 minute workout, its the perfect temp. They have some perks for black card holders including Hydro massage beds, massage chairs and tanning of course! The locker room is super basic and could be better.
