I really wanted to love this place but after my first class I won’t be going back. The class was SO packed that it made movements challenging without accidentally touching (or being touched) by the people on all sides and unfortunately became impossible to focus on the actual practice.
I’ve never been to a yoga class that was this jammed full. It was uncomfortable and became so hot that there were substantial puddles of sweat everywhere in the room and throughout waiting area to the point that the instructor warned us of the slip hazard upon exit - I couldn’t wait to get out of there.
I’d revisit if class sizes become smaller (like half the size) but until then I’d skip on this studio.

Many years ago, I was a regular at DDY. Life and schedules got in the way. It's a great place to recenter and though I'm not nearly as flexible or strong as I once was, I look forward to building both back.

I love the location and a style of yoga. My instructor queued a well-rounded flow and the adjustments were nice. Down dog is my preferred yoga studio when visiting the Georgetown/arlington area. The intake process was easy and the staff was welcoming with positive energy. Appreciate the clean restrooms and option for open or locked storage with dressing rooms.
About the practice space:
The mat guides are just a little close for me. I had two inches on either side but I’d prefer a 6 inch margin to practice and not be on someone’s mat nor someone on mine during some poses including Savana.
It’s hard to find great yoga teachers but if possible, a 9am class would be dreamy.
I think the biggest issue i see with the studio is the large puddle of sweat at the entrance/exit of the room due the grading. It’s a little unpleasant hydroplaning through other peoples sweat at the end of class but mainly a significant, post-class hazard.
Thanks for the opportunity to leave my feedback.

The studio and the teachers are the best. You are in for great, hot, sweaty flow AND amazing instruction . The classes are fast paced and the room is humid and heated. (Which I did not think I would like and I LOVE). Each instructor is well trained and brings great energy to the classes and the community. Sign up for classes on line to make sure you get a spot. Get ready for a great workout and to leave feeling spectacular

I love the approach of the Down Dog Yoga’s instructors to have simple and direct communication about the poses to challenge the group. And I really enjoy when they tell us a little story during pigeon pose! The heat of the class is also awesome. I prefer the classes that aren't super duper packed, but I get that it is probably needed for business. Overall, it's great, and I always feel like I just went to a spa after class!

I am a longtime yogi and had a 3-week visit to DC: I attended classes with Brian and Chandler. I have practiced at many yoga studios across the world and the warmth and chillaxed attitude of both teachers was outstanding and welcoming. Brian was SO fun and even made us laugh during class -and Chandler’s hands-on assists and cues were right on point. For a city that is undergoing so much political turmoil it was amazing to pause and be welcomed by two incredibly welcoming yogis and humans!

Great price options, and I really enjoyed the class. Most other yoga studios I’ve looked into require you to sign up for a subscription tier system, but Down Dog also offers drop-ins at either ~$31/class, or $10/class for the ones taught by instructors-in-training. I can finally afford to go to yoga classes again.

Terrible studio. The classes are super, super crowded. They sell more spots than people can fit in the room, ignoring the fact that it’s HOT inside and people sweat, making it unhealthy and uncomfortable. It’s sad that they prefer profits over safety of students.

I recently moved to Georgetown from San Diego and am excited to start hot yoga again! Instead of joining a franchise, I found a cozy studio with a warm and inviting atmosphere that I absolutely love. The quality of instruction, Frankie is outstanding, and the friendly customer service made me feel right at home. When I accidentally dropped my iPhone in the corner of the rack, everyone jumped in to help me look for it without any hesitation or attitude, which really impressed me! I’m planning to become a member of this studio and can’t wait to make some wonderful yogi friends. I highly recommend giving this place a try!

I really enjoyed the class itself! The instructor was great. I also liked the natural light and mood of the space. I was a bit thrown off because it was my first time there and I brought my own mat for the class and while the very nice front desk attendant was giving me the run down, another staff member interrupted and said my mat was “not a good one” in a very blunt way and that I should use their mats when I come. This threw me off and made me feel a bit uncomfortable given it was my first time there and I have used my mat numerous times at other places with no problem. However, the front desk attendant was very sweet and reassured me I can use whichever I would like. Overall I had a pleasant experience but would appreciate if there was more mindfulness that not everyone can afford or need to use or rent more expensive equipment and sometimes they are new and may not know!

Stolen shoes. I left a pair of nice New Balance sneakers at the studio (as an out of town/international client). I emailed and sent messages to Instagram to immediately let the studio know I had left them and to please hold onto them for me - that I would be back from Mexico in just two months. Despite the staff saying they would put them in the lost and found and notify all staff that I was coming back for them, they were stolen. Either by staff or by a client. Moreover, it was disrespectful for the studio to say they “couldn’t guarantee they would be there”. This was a common sense mistake. If the studio had placed the shoes in a closet, in a safe place, I could have retrieved them when I returned to the studio (which I did on 28 October). I recognize I am to blame for leaving the shoes. But I communicated with the studio and made plans to get them back. I first started coming to down dog in 2007. Since 2007 I have been a recurrent client. I’m not sure why the ball was dropped here but it would have been nice for the studio staff to do the bare minimum customer service here. I paid $30 for a drop in fee in August, $30 in October, plus lost a $120 pair of shoes there. $180 for the pleasure of two 1 hour yoga classes. Finally, when I got to the studio this week for my class, I noted that I had left a pair of shoes, and I showed the staff the email exchange from prior. The staff said they would look during the yoga class. When I was out of the class I had to remind the staff again, to look. I then waited 30 min for the arias to become available to look for the shoes , just to discovers that clearly the staff probably had NEVER been made aware of the shoes and that I would return for them, despite emails saying that’s what would occur. I will probably not return. Plus the studio is strict about leaving all personal items outside the actual yoga space, but now I would never trust leaving any valuables outside in the cubby hole given this theft. Not a great look if these were stolen by staff or clients.

We come to Down Dog, most of all, because of Melissa. My daughters and I love her and come for her classes whenever possible. She is warm, inviting and teaches classes that are perfectly intense and also include wisdom and valuable lessons. We love the Down Dog Yoga exercise sessions, because we feel great afterwards. They are excellent workouts and tune all of the body, as well as the mind. The heat and sweating also feels beneficial for better flexibility when stretching wit) added detox. All together an excellent experience.

“Being part of a ‘supporting’ community” is not equivalent to seeing a person consistently active social with others. It’s a very narrow-minded and disrespectful to the diversity of people. A quiet and introverted person can enjoy a group yoga session as it is : enjoy a mind-relaxed yoga exercise. People nowadays are hardly changing their perspective to respect to the difference among people. Instead, blindly following a main stream view or being picky at others or forcing your own narrow minded opinions onto others is much easier to do so.

The studio environment is quite nicely curated, yet for the hot yoga studio - there are NO SHOWERS, which is uncomfortable for me. Me & my partner took the Saturday morning class w/ Katie & both felt it lacked structure & the sense of building up, peaking in postures, & cooling off/ coming down. From the beginning till the end the quick pace was consistent, with little to no alignment cues for getting into the postures, & very little space for truly breathing in the movement-meditation. I felt that I'd NOT be able to deepen my understanding & feeling of the postures with the guidance of this teacher, because it was simply TOO FAST to examine & focus on them. It felt to be an advanced aerobic-based class, focused on sweat & arm balances, & quite exclusive for all levels in its structure.

Love this place; Instructor was amazing!! However, I understand it's hot yoga and everyone's sweating a lot. Someone in front of me was splashing his sweat on me. I will not attend another class here. Caution, dont purchase a pack of classes. I have attended classes at many other studios and I asked why I could not book any and was told that the pack I purchased a month ago could not be honored. You didnt mention this and even if you did, the decent thing as a business owner is to make an exception for one time and give the person good will. I wont be coming back here as clearly you are more interested in money than in people attending your classes.

DDY is the perfect balance: great exercise, meditation and community. In 20 years of yoga practice, it’s my favorite yoga studio and a place that feels like home. Details: it is a hard, hot workout that doesn’t feel like a gym. A lot of people are athletes who come for the stretching. The staff will learn your name. The classes are a mediation through movement, and do not involve spiritual lectures, chanting etc. Come try it out!

Returning to Down Dog after a few years I have noticed improvements. The studio, both staff and other yogis, are more welcoming, and instruction is less engaged with power and more with skill and mastery. Everyone is personally greeted and, where possible, their practice and practical needs are addressed.
The studio is genuinely hot. Not "sort of" hot, or "maybe warm." Hot. You will sweat, and you will wonder what gave you the idea this would be a good time. You will want to give up. But don't! Within an hour you will feel better than you could have imagined.
Highly recommend visiting this haven for dedicated practitioners.

Dropped in for a two week trial class but couldnt get past a day. Maybe I’m spoiled with stellar teachers and basic yoga environments, but it was impersonally taught, borderline apathetic teaching, and the pacing was comical - who needs chataranga on and off every 5 seconds like that, ever? I found myself laughing out of frustration and also how poor the class was.
I also got slight attitude when I walked in too and attributed it to being in the swanky Georgetown and at a hot yoga studio.
Also emailed for a refund for my two week trial to no response.
Good luck DDY!

I am a regular yoga practitioner and have been to studios across the country. I have NEVER been to a more abusive or unorganized class in my life. I was going to try the 30 for $30 but after one class with Denise I will never be back. Practice is supposed to be a continuous evolution of self and Denise was so degrading and profane in her words and actions that I wouldn’t feel comfortable entering the studio again. I spoke with others while leaving the class who felt that Denise’s vulgarity would push them to other studios as well. A nice space but an incredibly uncomfortable experience.
