UPDATED: I've been coming to this club for a while, and the standards seem lower every time, so I'm having to update my review. I hope the management pays attention.
The biggest issue is that there seems little to no oversight with respect to who walks into the gym. I walked in and promptly scanned my pass, but the associate was on his phone and didn't even glance in my direction. Later, as I was exercising close to the entrance, I saw multiple people walking into the gym without any check-in at all. No idea if they do actually have a membership or not. Why would anyone pay membership fees if the associates are treating it like a free community fitness center and let anyone come in? No surprise then that multiple machines are broken or have such worn-out parts that might break at any moment, presenting a serious safety issue. For instance, the pair of cables I had to exercise with today were hanging by a few threads.
I also have a Black Card membership, which I thought granted me exclusive access to the spa area. Well, doesn't feel so exclusive because random people were going there without presenting their pass to the associate. They were just hanging out in the massage chairs. One was a bit creepy looking, he kind of followed me there for a bit.
Also, unlike many locations that are open and staffed 24/7 and have trainers providing classes, this one has no classes and is open limited hours, with especially short days on the weekends.
So, in summary, I am paying for a Black Card membership at a gym that provides none of the benefits it's supposed to. It doesn't even do the bare minimum that other locations of this franchise do: providing basic security at check-in points, and keeping their equipment clean and maintained.

They make it easy to sign up but goodluck canceling after.. They make you jump thru hoops charge all hidden fees to cancel and want you send them certified letter..
I was going to just put a freeze on my account till I am back in town, but they kept charging me and then make me pay additional to cancel.. I just called my bank and put freeze on them.. Worst experience ever!!

Worst experience ever. I started membership for a month and cancelled within that period, yet I was still charged for the next month. I was told that I could cancel anytime within one month. Called to the customer service and they said they will deduct fees a week before the subscription ends? But why market u could cancel anytime? Refuse to give refunds. On top of that, I was charged an extra $20 just because their system couldn’t process my bank payment properly. This feels very unfair — please beware of such practices.

Terrible experience. I only stayed for one month and cancelled within that period, yet I was still charged for the next month, which I never used. I've been coming to this gym 3-6 times a week, between 6-9 am, for about a year. I chose it because it's cheap and convenient. I didn't expect to like it, but I do. I'd recommend it for most people, though gym rats should be aware they'll need to adjust their workouts for limited equipment.
Pros:
* it's cheap
* they keep it clean
* there is a respectful culture, at least with the morning regulars - people rack the weights, wipe down equipment, don't hog stations too badly, are open to working in, are pretty respectful of personal space and focus
* most people wear headphones and don't interact much outside of nods/smiles
* the regular staff are competent and congenial
* they play a variety of music (not too loud), which I only hear when my headphones die - good for workouts
Cons:
* dumbells stop at 75 pounds
* no barbells (just the light fixed-weight kind)
* no squat racks
* only 4 Smith machines - usually a line
* more cable machines would be nice
* tons of cardio machines and most are generally unused. Maybe they get more use at other times of day?
If you're used to lifting heavy you'll need to change up your form/tempo/etc to make up for the lighter weights and lack of barbells. Same goes for maxing out on the weight machines. It's doable with creativity. There are some serious lifters in the morning crew and I've gotten ideas from watching them.
Finally, there is the whole "no judgement" and "no lunks" thing. I think calling people lunks is pretty judgmental, but anyway this isn't an aggro space, which is nice. For the regulars, the most serious lifters are often the most polite folks, so it's a good culture. I'm glad I joined and now I'm very accustomed to purple.

I have been going to this gym for 2 plus years. It was great at first, but for the last 4-5 months the AC has been broken, the fans don't work, and many of the machines are broken. When I share these concerns with staff, I am told that they reported the issues to management and no action was taken. The location is super convenient, but if things don't improve soon I will be finding another place to work out.

Saw someone leave a review about the music being loud from 2 years ago and it is still loud and Also there is only one pec fly rear delt in the entire gym. Every day I'm seeing people fighting over one machine. Update: Two days in the row the AC and WiFi has been down. Had to walk four blocks to a library to download a show really fast. The gym being underground is one thing but not having access to technology in case of an emergency is serious. I hope something happens soon. The atmosphere of the people that work out here is great. I can't say so much about the staff. They sometimes cringe when I ask to use the aqua massage chair. Side note. I asked one of the workers was the wifi working and they told me it should just pop up on your phone. They probably didn't even know it was off.

I am surprised this place has good reviews, maybe because of the location. I have been to many Planet Fitnesses around the country, and this is perhaps one of those ghetto ones. There is no AC, only a few fans here and there, and it gets hot there. The man's bathroom is ok, but the door lock is broken, making it uncomfortable to use. The machines are too close to one another; you feel like you're almost breathing the other person's breath. Also, the machines are not organized well, some are skipped, and you must walk around to find them. The place is a mess. However, the worst part is the lack of AC!!!! Can you have AC or big roof fans???

The equipment is in good shape, which is a huge plus, but it’s always crowded here. I went around 6 pm, 9:30 am, and noon - always tons of people. It’s underground so feels a bit stuffy, too. I couldn’t find a kettle bell that was heavier than 35 lbs; maybe they have them, but I never found.

I definitely recommend this PF! I was staying at the Motto hotel which is across the street from this PF, and they give their guests complimentary access. I decided to give it a go despite the horror stories I’ve seen on Tiktok and so.
I actually had a great time at this gym! The cardio machines seemed to be in good condition, and it was pretty clean and not crowded at all. I‘d go around 9am, so I cant say how it is after work hours. The staff were also helpful when I first asked for locker information and they also would smile and say Goodbye. I did notice that the AC wasnt working properly, but I just figured it was fine and I‘d just sweat more if anything. I would totally sign-up for this PF if I was a local! Expectations were exceeded!

I've been going to this gym for a year, and I've never felt unsafe until today. Please put cameras in the locker area. Today, I caught someone stealing my stuff from my locked locker. This guy used a tool to open it. Luckily, I caught him when he was going through my stuff, but another guy wasn't so lucky.

It is quite surprising how the conditions are in the area where this gym is located. Despite the staff being notified, some equipment has been broken for three years, the trash is not emptied, and the lockers still lack code locks.

I give this 4 stars because I like the gym equipment itself and some of the employees are very kind and helpful. However, the water tastes like mold, and I am hoping that this issue is rectified as soon as possible. I am told that it is the building manager, and not Planet Fitness who is responsible for the water, but I still think that it needs to be fixed ASAP

Staff members are very rude over the phone for some reason. Sometimes they will answer the phone and not even say “hello”, they will just pick up the phone and wait for you to start talking. They also have terrible attitudes. Yall need to do better with this because it is extremely unprofessional.

I signed up for a membership before this gym even opened, excited to have a reasonably priced option downtown. Although I never ended up using my membership, about a year ago, I decided to try their tanning services before my usual July 4th beach trip, as I remembered Planet Fitness offered tanning services.
When I went in, I learned I had an outstanding balance for July 2023 and January and February 2024. The staff member at the front desk was very nice, explaining that while I technically needed to pay off the balance, I should be good to go for tanning since I had spoken to someone about it, and I just needed to let others know if they asked. I told him I’d pay it off right away, used the tanning bed, and left.
The next day, when I came back to tan again, I had a very different experience with Troy McGilvery. As soon as I mentioned tanning, he brought up the outstanding balance and said I couldn’t use any services unless I made a payment. I tried to explain the conversation I’d had the day before, but Troy was condescending and rude. Even after explaining that I would pay the balance within the week and that my June membership was already paid, he eventually allowed me to tan but told me I couldn’t return until I paid something on the balance.
As I was walking to the tanning room, he continued to mumble under his breath, and when I asked what he was saying, he became defensive and rude. I told him he needed to work on his customer service skills and left feeling disrespected by his unprofessional behavior.
I emailed the club manager, AJ Hester, regarding the poor treatment and miscommunication. After three days, he finally responded, simply repeating what I already knew, offering a payment plan, and saying he was “willing to grant [me] access to the club and possibly waive some of your late fees to expedite the process.” I surely didn’t need a payment plan for $125, and it defeated the purpose since I was leaving for vacation.
What disappointed me most is that AJ never addressed Troy’s unprofessionalism or poor communication. Troy could have easily said, “I see you haven’t used your membership before and may not have been aware of this. We’re glad you’re coming in. If you can pay by July 1, you’re welcome to tan this week, but after that, your access will be paused until payment is made.” That would have been reasonable, but instead, I was met with an attitude.
For the record, I paid the $124.65 in full the very next day as I said I would. I forwarded my receipt to AJ and asked how my customer service experience would be addressed, and never heard back from him or anyone else. This was one year ago, on June 27th.
I have never returned since, and I strongly recommend staying away from this location. First impressions matter, and it’s unfortunate how they chose to treat someone who was finally walking through their doors for the first time.
I imagine there will be a "response from the owner" telling me to reach out to the club's manager.... look how well that works.

The shocking and oppressive absence of ventilation makes the space feel stuffy and hot. Good luck if you're not in the radius of a fan, many of which aren't turned on. You also can't hold your hands under the bathroom sink faucets for many seconds before they tingle and burn from the excessive heat of the water (even if you turn the faucets to 'cool', which doesn't make a difference). The only positives are the location and the staff that are generally friendly, but I'd highly recommend finding a different Planet Fitness or gym.

Some of the cardio equipment is broken with pieces all over the ground. Also AC is not on today (it’s 102 with the heat idex). My thermostat is reading 87 degrees inside. If the AC is broken I would appreciate a sign on the door before coming inside. I generally have a okay experience here but find it dangerous to not put on the AC with the extreme heat going on outside.

Connecticut, Mass, GA even Toronto and Vancouver Canada.. and this is the worst staff… never before have I been told I cant jump rope… wasn’t in anybody’s way, was in a secluded section in the 30min express work out area where there was nobody. It's understandable that employees would react negatively if asked to clean fecal matter from walls and ceilings, as this is a hazardous task beyond normal duties. This situation represents a significant lapse in basic hygiene and workplace decency that needs to be rectified. Clean enough gym and convenient location but there is not enough strength equipment and wayyyy too much cardio equipment. Almost always have to wait ages for the Smith machines and benches but there are a lot of empty cardio machines at any given time.
No point paying for this membership if I have to alter my routine every time I come to something I can just do in my apartment gym because the equipment isn’t available.

Planet Fitness is the fifth gym I've been a member of in the five or so years I've lived in DC. It is by far the most affordable gym I've been a member of during my time here - at $25 a month, the black card membership is hard to beat. The vast majority of my workouts have been at the Gallery Place-Chinatown location, conveniently located at the 7th & H St exit of the station.
It's an accessible, affordable gym, but one thing that has remained constant through all my visits is the absurd crowding. No matter when I go, it's ALWAYS packed, to the point where benches in the free weight area are rarely available. Moreover, the amount of space and equipment dedicated to cardio is not tenable or aligned with current fitness trends. The 30-minute express workout area is obsolete and should be removed to accommodate the new plate-loaded equipment PF locations are supposed to be receiving (Chinatown still doesn't have the new equipment).
One annoying thing about this location is every single time I've gone, several paper towel dispensers are either jammed or empty. There doesn't seem to be any urgency to address either issue.
Front desk staff is pleasant for the most part, aside from the few instances where they didn't acknowledge me. Due to the crowding at this location, there have been times where I've had to
completely abandon my workout plan after even my backup plan was foiled due to virtually every piece of equipment being occupied. I've even seen lines of people waiting to use equipment here!
PF is an affordable gym that allows guests, so that likely partially explains why it seems to be crowded no matter when I go. I've gone in the morning, early afternoon, and late at night - it's always the same. It hasn't even been two months, but if crowding continues to be an issue, I will unfortunately be moving back to one of the more expensive gyms in the area.

Went after work on Friday. I signed up. It cost 40+ dollars, plus they were planning to charge a few days after. There was a literal line to the smith machines. There was broken equipment. I couldn't access what I needed in the strength section. I barely had space to warm up. I tried to get a refund but they did not give me one. Very disappointed.

Very predatory billing practices. Staff error lead to late fees that were extremely difficult to get resolved. Difficult to get in touch with a manager and staff are not equipped to help or interested in helping. This is in addition to issues with cancelling memberships, as echoed in other reviews.

The hours suck they close at 9 pm and and open at 7 am they have government building hoursI got a planet fitness cause they where 24 hours and don't like crowded gyms now that I'm not driving planet fitness in DC is not 24 hours they should at least stay open for bus hours 5am til midnight or 1 am I like to work out after I eat so if I eat at 730 830 930 pm and try to planet fitness Chinatown closed

Do not buy a membership at this location as this business is unethical and will try to steal your money in any way. I spent close to a year trying to close my account and was charged close to $400 on two separate false charges. I made my account in February and called to close my account a few months later because I was going abroad. The employee confirmed my account was closed. A few months later when I realized my account was still active and I was being charged, I called to cancel and they refused. I asked for my account number to transfer and they again refused or would give me the wrong number. At this point, they knew I was in another city so they kept insisting I had to travel 4 hours to come in and cancel (I had the premium membership so all I needed was the number to transfer). I was sick of this and cut their use on my account and was soon after charged a lump sum of $179.92 on my credit card. I disputed the charge, but the money still went through. I called the gym in January and just desperately asked them to close my account and the owner demanded I pay again as they received no money. I believed the owner and paid again only to realize that the money had left my account two separate times. Since then, I've called several times and employees have confirmed receiving both payments, but they refuse to refund me. The manager won't even bother helping me or refunding me. The greed will end up ruining this place. Please be cautious of what places you make an account at and also where you give your banking information. Not worth the time, effort, and financial drain. Also, they kept denying they can't close an account over the phone, but the manager was able to one he got $400 out of me?

Very convenient. Cordial staff. Updated machines. Superb Black Card Spa. It is in Chinatown though, if you live in DC you know what that means. If you're from out of town, prepare for impromptu live entertainment.
The members are great people that really focus on their workout. This is one Planet Fitness where the members actually USE the equipment they pick up.

I wanted to update my review, after leaving a previous review and receiving a response from the owner who claimed they would address the issue, I reached out to the email the suggested to contact for help with the incident. I reported being harassed and disrespected by employees and Lauren(not the owner) response we are sorry that you feel that way, complete negligence when it comes to safety. Please be aware that although it says harassment isn’t tolerated in planet fitness actually it is and it is not taken seriously, nor is aggressive behavior towards members (7th street location) worst experience I’ve had after having multiple experiences at several planet fitness

Greetings this gym is the worst planet fitness I’ve ever been too, and I’ve been to several. I’ve made a complaint with the general mangers about harassment and unprofessionalism. I asked for corporates contact information and the assist manager who claimed he was a the highest manager which was a lie refused to assist me with it. I had to contact another gym to get the regional manager contact information. In addition I was in a heated argument with Charlie who works there and thought that she had the right to not only talk publicly about my concerns at the desk but also argued with me back and fourth about a very small issue further telling me about how I’m not the only one at the gym etc. I since contacted corporate and they claimed that the owner would address these issues, have yet to hear back. In addition the general manger response to the incident was she would handle it next week. They are completely negligent when it comes to safety issues and disrespect to paying club members. In America I’ve noticed that businesses have no respect for the patron, in America they think that because they are corporation that they can get away with whatever and treat the community who makes there business thrive any kind of way. I share this here for others to be aware of this gyms negligence, and in addition to let you know, that this way of doing business will be addressed in places of power if you have been a victim of negligence or disrespect those days are passing. The place is good, especially when u think how little you pay...female restroom are ok..thou my husband said male was really a mess. It has lot of idle equipment that could be move to make more room for people working out on matts. There's almost no room to work out if you don't use machines...only a tiny spot ( 5 matt max) and It's always overcrowded.

I like the gallery place Chinatown planet fitness location because it's close to where I live, and so far I have experienced a peaceful, calm, relaxing, and safe experience. Everyone seems respectful to each other. And I found lots of useful equipment there to help me progress towards my fitness goals. And the employees there have been Nice, professional, and polite.

I love how friendly the staff is at this gym. It is super clean and well kept. The locker room is also clean and has great storage and shower/changing space. Equipment is maintained in good repair. It is also very easy to get to being right at the top of the Gallery Place escalator. Great value.

Very nice to be a Urban, Planet Fitness. Being from Baltimore. Its only 1 Planet Fitness without a parking lot. Center Place, Planet Fitness was surprisingly larger than the Baltimore Suburban Planet Fitness. Machines are more modern models. Bathroom is twice as big, as Baltimore.
For Real:
I didn't check Washington DC. Planet fitness locations.
I just happened to had to use the bathroom. And, I was like:
Wow.
Also, it didn't matter if it was crowded.
Because, its larger.
The only way it happened, was because I had:
Blackcard Membership.
Initially, I got the Blackcard for travel. Not, to bring a friend.

It’s the only planet fitness in the area so I’ll keep going here, but on Saturdays and Sundays the staff get so aggressive with closing up. They start sounding a siren at one hour before close and from 30 minutes until close they will just keep the siren sound blaring on repeat. I get it, I’ve worked jobs where I just want to close up. I can understand the single sirens, but keeping it on repeat just ruined my final sprint - which was about 15 minutes until close. It closes at 7 let’s. Calm it down a bit

Mid stars due to inconvenient operating hours. The current schedule leaves many customers frustrated and disappointed as they often encounter long wait times for machines or open spaces. It seems illogical to open when most people are at work or preparing for their days commitments, and to close when many are finishing a typical end-of-day commitments, thereby exacerbating demand and wait times. It's almost aggravating to see a line for a leg machine or any machines or open spaces, when it could likely be avoided with more reasonable operating hours. Despite being conveniently located near a metro station in D.C. (and being one of the very few in D.C.), the operating hours do not align well with the metro's schedule. Adjusting hours to coincide more closely with metro hours would greatly benefit customers. During peak hours, you're unlikely to experience the same level of maintenance they're typically able to provide due to the high volume of visitors. Someone please revisit these hours, at the very least open earlier if you wont stay open late.

I've been going to the gym for a month now and I do not have any complaints. I usually go very early in the morning (5 am), so it is never crowded. The staff is super friendly and are willing to answer any question that I have. Special shout out to Danielle and Alex!!! Despite how early it is when I arrive, they still manage to keep a smile on their face to greet me and see me leave. I enjoy my experience so far, and look forward to my workouts because of the warm environment.

I’ve had repeated incidence of theft in this gym whereby someone goes to your locker space and steals your personal item (gym jacket in my case). Then I was told that nothing could be done about this issue. Doesn’t matter if you have a lock or not really so I personally don’t feel safe here.
