I am writing to share my glowing recommendation for Samjulien, who is undeniably the best Iyengar teacher I have ever had the pleasure of learning from.

When I first attended Samjulien's class, I was completely new to Iyengar's method and relatively inexperienced in yoga overall. It was pure serendipity that led me to his class at the fitness center in my office, and from the very first session, I was hooked. His approach to teaching Iyengar yoga captivated me instantly.

Following Samjulien, I found myself at Yoga Heights in Washington DC, where he has cultivated a thriving community of both seasoned and novice Iyengar students. This studio offers a diverse array of classes taught by many excellent instructors, each bringing their unique style to the practice. The level of instruction at Yoga Heights is consistently superb, making it a haven for yoga enthusiasts of all levels. At Yoga Heights Iyengar classes last 75 minutes and there are three Iyengar classes every week.

As someone who considers themselves a perpetual beginner on the yoga journey, I have found Iyengar to be the ideal foundation. Samjulien's teaching goes beyond simply guiding students into poses; he fosters a deeper understanding of our bodies through Iyengar's principles. His profound grasp of the Iyengar method is evident, and his sensitivity and support make every Iyengar class a transformative experience.

One of Samjulien's standout qualities is his imaginative use of props, which is truly exemplary and worth exploring. His classes are both disciplined and exhilarating, blending the rigour of Iyengar yoga with a touch of audacity and defiance that makes each session enjoyable.

In summary, Samjulien is a remarkable Iyengar yoga teacher whose guidance has profoundly impacted my practice. I wholeheartedly recommend Iyengar with Samjulien to anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of yoga and experience the transformative power of Iyengar.

I absolutely love my Iyengar classes with SamJulien. In particular, I love his personalized focus on alignment and "remembering" how that alignment works (or doesn't work) for me in other basic yoga postures. I am always thinking about it in my Back-to-Basics class. SamJulien is a wonderful instructor, and very attentive to and respectful of the individual challenges we all face. It's been a fantastic complement to my yoga journey.

I go to Georgia Avenue for the twice weekly Iyengar classes with Samjulien. Iyengar is not all levels flow, Iyengar is a precise practice teaching alignment and the total union of your mind with your body. I switched to Iyengar from Ashtanga shortly after I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition. It is magic for opening up the chest and lungs, aiding digestion with twists, improving balance as you age. Just doing shoulder stand in the Iyengar way stimulates the vagus nerve and aids the parasympathetic nervous system. Samjulien is an intuitive and playful teacher and his classes are great. Iyengar is for all ages and all body types and it is not a competition! I admire how counterculture Iyengar is! It is not about looking good, it is about being at peace with your body and knowing every part of it intimately. Iyengar is not easily marketable but once you try it, you may well be hooked. Samjulien has an Iyengar book club where we read the writings of Mr. Iyengar. It is the deepest practice of yoga I have found and anyone with chronic illness or injury, recovering from or diagnosed with cancer would truly benefit from this rich resource in Parkview/Columbia Heights/Shaw. I love it.

I am new to the studio and am so pleased with the quality of the classes, how welcoming the staff is, and how clean the studio is. I do wish there were more Saturday classes offered at the Petworth studio.

Love Yoga Heights sooo much! I’ve been a member for just over two years now and am so grateful to have this local spot nearby. There’s a nice array of class options for all levels of yogi. The studio is clean, calming, and the teachers are fantastic. Couldn’t recommend more!

My favorite class is Rocket Yoga with Caroline or Katie (depending on the day). Both are excellent instructors who teach me something new every time I go. As someone who has practiced yoga consistently for over 15 years that just goes to show how impressive they are.

My favorite yoga studio in DC! Yoga Heights is one of Park View’s gems. It’s easily walkable from the Columbia Heights or Petworth stations if you’re taking the train, but it also has a strong neighborhood feel. Both instructors and students live locally and attend frequently enough to create a strong sense of community. They offer classes for every level - from gentle yin yoga with Amy to work-your-ass-off hot yoga with Yassah. Each class has been fantastic!

I've attended Yoga Heights for over five years now, and recommend this studio! The environment is warm and accessible; there is a wide range of classes to choose from.

For an intermediate yogi looking to check out some challenging, energetic, and fun classes, I'll suggest a few of my favorites at the GA Ave location: Katie's Power Flow, Caroline's Rocket, and Yassah's Hot Flow.

I've been going to Yoga heights for years and love it! I started going while doing PT for an ankle injury and needed a class / studio that wasn't geared towards the more intense style that's gotten really popular. As cheesy as it sounds, I found a real home at this studio across it's locations. The teachers are a really wonderful, diverse group who brings a lot of their life experience into their teaching and can actually help at any level/body type. I feel like it's the only studio I've been to where there really are students at every level too. This makes for a really nice experience since if you're new or getting back into yoga, you don't feel silly doing a less complex movement but also have a lot of inspiration! Love the variety of classes and locations!

I absolutely love this place. I tried the $39 for the first month and I thought I would go elsewhere and save some money. But, I grew fond of this studio, the instructors, and the community. There's a great variety of classes! There are classes that are very chill but if you want to get a good workout, you absolutely can. The times classes are available are wonderful if you're an earlier riser (which I have to be sometimes) or something to do before calling it a night. Personally, I love the balance of getting movement in, without it having to feel like a HIIT class all the time.

I've done yoga in a variety of different cities and this has been my favorite studio so far. I really appreciate being part of this community and I'm excited to continue going!

Absolutely amazing studio! Wonderful hot yoga session with a great vibe and patient/ knowledgeable instructor (I believe her name was Becca). I signed up for their introductory unlimited classes for the month (which is a steal at $39!) but unfortunately was unable to take advantage of it since we had to spend some time out of state taking care of a relative. The owner of the studio personally called me to check in since I hadn’t been in a while. She asked if I was aware I had signed up for automatic renewal and was totally understanding when I said I would like to cancel for the time being. Who does that?? A great owner and a great business that’s who! Going above and beyond to make sure I was satisfied with my package, checking in, and easy no fuss cancellation. Bless this place on every level. Oh yeah and their yoga classes are awesome! Great class size, zen studio right on Georgia, clean space, great instructors, I mean I could go on and on. Will always recommend this place and cannot praise them enough!

The teacher, Sadie Leigh, greeted each person warmly and personally. She moved with ease between the two rooms, she explained everything in a way that each person could adapt to their own abilities, she brought an underpinning of spirituality that was heartening but not directive, and she has a lovely voice. She also demonstrated with skill and precision while maintaining a monologue laced with excellent metaphors and a little levity. The space was warm, clean, equipped with lots of nice equipment (blocks, bolsters, blankets, mats) and good lighting. I will make Sunday morning yoga a priority from now on!

Yoga Heights has a terrific range of teachers with individual teaching styles as well as an array of classes in various yoga traditions. There are multiple virtual class options every day, and the zoom format allows for both a sense of community and the privacy of an at home practice. The variety of classes keeps me coming to the mat, sometimes multiple times a day, for the strength-building of Barre and Power Flow and the stress relief of Yin.
Although I sorely miss the in-person experience of the studio community, seeing familiar faces on the computer from wherever we are all quarantining is a real solace and support.

I attended YH for a month unlimited and went every day. There’s a few really great positives about this studio and a few negatives. I was a student at Johnny Kest’s Center for Yoga in metro Detroit and it seems like every yoga studio I go to is sub-par in comparison. With that being said, my review is based off of my liking for hot, power vinyasa that is very challenging in nature. Yoga Heights is a great place for beginners. I found the yoga wasn’t challenging enough for me and a lot of the yoga was repetitive and uncreative (i.e: the same poses every class, cross-teacher). I felt like some of the teachers could have spent more time as students before sharing their practice with others. However, there are a few instructors here who are really great (Amy, Steve, Caroline J to name a few). My biggest problem with YH is that almost every practice I attended was purely physical. Yoga is a very spiritual practice and I felt none of it while practicing at this studio. It seems like none of the instructors with the exception of Steve care to delve into the spiritual aspect of yoga. This bothered me. The actual aesthetics of the rooms could be improved. I like my studio to feel like a sacred space/temple and I felt like it was just a room with nothing special about it. The studio offers barre and Pilates as well, which I loved! The Pilates instructor Sarah is definitely super knowledgeable and helpful, and I will miss taking her class on Sundays. TL;DR - great studio for beginners, intermediate to advanced practitioners won’t find much challenge here; yoga at YH is not taught on a spiritual level. All in all a pretty good experience.

This is the location that started it all for me -- I love Yoga Heights Georgia Ave! If you are looking for quality yoga in a welcoming environment, this is the place for you! All of the classes are thoughtfully taught by the studio's lineup of incredible teachers -- I think I've been to almost every class they offer -- and leave you feeling energized and ready to take on the day. A few of my favorite classes include Rocket Yoga with Paige, Yin Yoga with Amy or Matthew, Back to Basics with Jess and Intermediate Flow with Steve. To be honest though, all the classes are 100% worth the trip. I also just completed my 200 YTT here and can't recommend it enough -- Jess and Angela are wonderful teacher teachers! Do yourself a favor and visit the studio ASAP!

I tried this studio after meeting them at Columbia Heights Day and signed up for the $39 one month unlimited. Three main complaints about his studio: The classes are overbooked and very very crowded, so much so that you can’t do regular yoga moves without hitting the wall or another class member - they need to learn that cramming too many people into a class will prevent people from coming back. Second, the studio itself is not welcoming and the staff are not friendly. Third, the “one-month” unlimited class is not actually a month long, they ended mine earlier that a month when I requested to cancel, so I didn’t get to use my full month that I paid for. All around bad vibes.

The atmosphere is relaxing and allows me to decompress from the busy DC life. I especially hot yoga in the mornings. Sadie Leigh does a wonderful job of catering to both beginners and more advanced yogis, and is always open to suggestions.

I love being part of the Yoga Heights community! With so many different styles in which to move (from vinyasa to budokon to modern dance to rocket!!), there's truly something for everyone. It's also particularly affordable in the middle of this largely overpriced city, especially with all the various sales and deals they whip out regularly. For example, there's a special right now that's $30 for 3 weeks of unlimited yoga, so don't take my word for it, check the studio out for yourself!

I love the baby and me class. The studio is very welcoming to new moms, giving them a place to meet other moms, get a workout, have one-on-one time with baby, and take care of babies needs during class.

Yoga Heights is an amazing community of yogis!! Such a diverse group of people in a judgement-free zone with reliable class offerings. You can find something every week that suits your mood. I've never had a bad instructor... YH gives you chances to improve your practice and slow down when you need to. So lucky to have it in the neighborhood!

My neighborhood yoga studio! I've been going ever since the studio opened a little over a year ago, and it's been delightful watching it evolve. They offer plenty of different styles of yoga to match everyone's taste: from restorative to powerful to dance-y to basic classes. Also: free tea and (often) free fruit! There isn't anything to not like about this place.

Great community yoga atmosphere in Petworth. Close walk from the metro and a few bus lines. Rooftop yoga in the summer is great and I've attended many workshops at the studio as well as did my yoga teacher training under one of the owners, Jess. Couldn't recommend it more!

A wonderful studio and community! I have taken class with Sadie Leigh and Jess Pierno, and I left both classes feeling energized yet calm. The sequences were challenging and mindfully created and integrated different aspects of yoga into the physical practice. All around great experience!!!

Amy, one of the instructors and founders of the studio/dojo, is a beast. I have taken the fusion flow class numerous times with her, and left feeling awesome every time. I exercise like crazy, and have tried all of the studios in the area. This is a great all around workout, and Amy is fun. Highly recommend it!
