For nearly 120 years, downtown Pensacola has been home to a YMCA – a place dedicated to helping people feel healthy, welcome and connected. Although our main goal has been to create meaningful change in the people we serve, we have also contributed to meaningful change downtown with the Bear Levin Studer Family YMCA, a 52,000-square-foot facility at the corner of Intendencia and Tarragona Streets. The open design is contemporary, yet blends in with a revitalized downtown core that has experienced a renaissance. This vibrant, world class facility welcomes people of ages, abilities and walks of life into a lifestyle of wellness, educational opportunity, family strengthening and community development.

On January 25th, after 7:00 PM, I brought my children to swim at the Pensacola YMCA. At first, one member entered the pool and was only shouting loudly. Since he looked even older than my high school child, I did not mind, because everyone has their own way of releasing emotions. But later his dangerous behavior escalated — he began using his hands to scoop pool water into his mouth and then spraying it back into the pool, which clearly contaminated the pool.
The lifeguards simply stood at a distance and did nothing. This happened multiple times. I had to remove my children from the pool, and when I reported it, I was reprimanded by the lifeguards: “They just don’t listen! Without supervisor instruction, lifeguards have no authority to act!” Until we left, no lifeguard took any action.
I then approached Supervisor Brittney. At first she pretended not to understand, and only after my strong insistence did she come with me to the pool. She merely spoke a few words to the lifeguards and took no measures. Even though she was present and witnessed this behavior directly, she did not stop it. Instead, she excused it by saying “he is special needs,” claiming she had to speak with the parents first, and even signaled lifeguards to ignore me. I stressed the urgency and demanded immediate action, but she kept repeating that she had to talk to the parents. I wondered, isn’t it the parents’ responsibility to supervise their child at the pool? Only when the supposed father happened to walk by did she ask him to restrain the child, and he merely told the child to behave. The behavior did not improve.
The supervisor even told me she did not need to handle these matters in front of me, and repeatedly emphasized that no matter what channel I complained through, nothing would change. She even mentioned that in previous complaints, her supervisor Bonnie only asked her about the situation without requiring improvement or guidance. She concluded that the problem was parents like me — because we rarely go to YMCA but still pay monthly fees, thinking of it as supporting the YMCA. But today I saw such a terrible situation, not only without proper treatment, but my children even asked me: why do “special needs” not have to follow the rules, while those of us who do are forced to leave?
Later, one of my children told me his ear hurt so badly he could not sleep. Since it was already 10:30 PM, I had to take him to the emergency room. We stayed there for more than three hours, and the doctor said that such poorly managed and unhygienic places are not suitable for children, who can easily get sick from them.
Therefore, I can only choose to cancel my membership. Good intentions should be properly used, not abused by poor management.

Desperately need another leg press. I try 3-4 times to use it. Most of the time I have to go by Planet Fitness to use that. Sad but some use their phone while on the machine at the “Y”. 😢

The reason I gave this a tow star rating is because I was in ymca today on a sunday minding my own business thinking I could be at peace and not be bothered but, a woman who I think was a surprivor came up to me today and said my subcription or something was expired for almost a year I thought that our subscriptions are to continue unless we unsubcribe from the ymca monthly and not have to pay 80 dollars for a shity workout or swim in a pool, where employees, young girls who can accuse anything on anyone at work without provided proof, the surprivor that had blonde hair told me that I was making them unconformable and i was staring at them all day and it made me feel as if i was a monster or felt I am that bad of a person to be told that, which was a baseless lie to get rid of me from ymca today. Also the surprivor lady didnt didnt really do her job today will enough and she made me look super bad, they were going behind my back whispering about me as I kept looking at them, but not starring at them. I do not like people so please ymca dont assume that I starring at anyone because they not that special to me...

If you are a parent, expect to always have to wait for kidzone. Very inconvenient. Everytime I have come I have to wait at least 15-20min or more and always crying. My daughter hates it. Young inexperienced girls in the kidzone just standing there as 2 2yos cry hysterically. Not much empathy seen while I was there. Not a fan. Wish it was better.

Hi! I have a question here, for anyone who's ever gone. I'm looking into fitness, and a safe place to be out of the house during summer. I am currently a teenager, and was wondering if it's a good place for teens? I initially came across this due to a search for places to swim w/a friend, but am interested by the ability of fitness programs, as I have been interested in the subject for a while, but unable to find an area close enough for me.
Can anyone tell me if it cost money, or is teen friendly? I haven't been to a YMCA since I was like, kindergarten, so I don't really know how they work anymore, as it was also on the other half of the country back then.
Any help or advice is appreciated, thank you :)

I want to leave a higher star rating than this because the staff is great and the sauna/steam room ammenities are so thoroughly enjoyed. The reason I need to take off two stars is because I am a regular. I come in multiple times a day - mornings and nights. The womens bathroom is mostly not clean, as well as the shared bathrooms. The grime caked up on the walls and the hair… I know hair is hard to clean regularly but I believe a deeeeeeep clean needs to be done. I see others on here talking about that too. Now I dont think just because I have one issue with a facility that I need to bring the stars all the way down to 1. It does gross me out and is why I dont take showers there anymore, which is sometimes inconvenient for my schedule and would be nice tk benefit from as a member. I would just recommend hiring a deep cleaning service once a week or something. Maybe even once a day cause I know a lot of people visit this facility. I have seen the cleaning people in the bathrooms before and the level they get in deep to clean is just not up to par for me with how many people use these bathrooms. I do really enjoy the rest of the ammenities and what the facility has to offer. Most of the workers are very sweet as well!

The steam room and sauna are only cleaned once a day, which is not sufficient given the volume of members using these facilities. Ideally, the steam room should be rinsed out every 2–3 hours, and the sauna should be mopped on the same schedule to maintain basic hygiene standards. Additionally, the dressing rooms are not maintained throughout the day. With the high traffic, it becomes unpleasant very quickly.
In contrast, other YMCAs I’ve visited—such as Mobile—have staff who regularly clean and monitor the locker rooms during business hours. This has been an ongoing concern I’ve brought to management, including the CEO, but unfortunately, nothing has changed. At one point, one of the upper management even told me, “If you don’t like it here, why do you still come?” That response reflects a disappointing lack of accountability and customer care.

This place just isn't for families. Every single time I come in for free swim there is 1) nobody else in the pool and 2) a litany of people ready to hassel me out of the pool. I think strike 3 was today for me.
I have no interest in stereotyping but if you're a 40 year old dad like me with kids you're probably better off finding a pool that is more accomodating to you.

I just left the facilities very disappointed We decided to sign up for the gym because of the kids zone How exciting to be able to exercise again while someone looks after my 6-month-old baby . When I arrived there were two girls with two little girls , which I thought was really cool because one of the women told me that two ( workers) were going to join. So there would be four of them to take care of the babies. I dropped off my 6 month old baby at 7:56 in the morning. At 8:19 I get a message that I need to come back. I found my baby crying like I had never seen before. It was a bit shocking. That four people could not calm my son down in less than 20 minutes. without any explanation honestly it was my first and last time leaving my son in the kids zone !! disappointing

I have attend the downtown Y for 3 years.
During that time I have attended regularly the deep water aerobic class. We have had multiple regulars attending the class the entire time I have attended there. A few of the members have been in the same class for 10+ years.
Last Friday we had a substitute (one of the lifeguards). We were given no explanation to where our regular instructor was. At the end of class the lifeguard told us that the class was no longer.
When we asked questions, we were given no answers.
We were left in shock. We didn’t know if our instructor may have had a medical emergency, car accident, etc, etc!!!
We all felt we were treated very wrong and insensitively!
We later found out by reaching out to people other than YMCA employees, that the instructor (which had worked there 40 years!) had quit. We learned that the administration had been treating her terribly which pushed her to quit.
We assumed they would find another instructor, but they just removed our class off the schedule completely.
We all loved this class and are devasted that there wasn’t even an attempt to meet our needs. Many of us can’t attend regular aerobic classes due to bad backs, knees, feet, etc. My physician has told me to do water aerobic classes. The other classes offered don’t even get my heart rate up.
Don’t even get me started on the cross dresser in the ladies locker room. Ladies have seen parts that ladies don’t have on their bodies. Someone complained, but nothing was done!
This Y doesn’t care about their members.

I really wanted to like this gym but just can’t! I did my PT for two knee replacements here and thought it would be a great gym to continue my recovery. I mean it looks nice, has a lot to offer with the pool, pickleball, and classes, but the main reason for my membership is to use the weight machines.
First, the parking situation isn’t the best. The garage is generally packed and the spaces are tight. I’ve had issues finding spots a time or two.
The weight/cardio area is good however the gym bros tend to take over the equipment. Today a few had a few of the leg machines monopolized for over 30 minutes sitting with headphones and phones with several minutes between sets. Ask to work in and get that gym bro look.
The small area off the main floor is generally pretty busy as well with people taking up space and bouncing back and forth between that room and equipment. Made the mistake of picking a spot in there that someone was using in between her many sets in the main floor.
I’ve gone at several different times during the day and it’s the same. For the money, I can workout at the judgement free place with more equipment for a lot less.
Guess this isn’t the gym for me.

This was a facility I enjoyed back when parking wasn’t this much of an issue. The garage you are able to use is horrible. There is never lower parking available, tickets get mistakenly sent out, and it’s very tight for parking and space. I wish parking curbside was an option.
The heat and temperature is constantly fluctuating and feels like there isn’t air flow some days.
There is a limited amount of cardio equipment and it is most of the time being used during the hours everyone gets to go.
There is no wait list, so it has been an issue where someone runs up when you’re waiting or gets mad at you because they were “in line”.
I really try to make use of this facility but it just isn’t convenient as it used to be.

This gym consistently has issues.
Among them, whoever controls the AC has no idea what’s going on. Today it was 77 degrees—I’m assuming the symbol (pictured) on the AC is the humidity, which is 86%. This is not safe to workout in, the floor is actually wet, l was sliding on the weight floor while trying to squat, where people are regularly lifting 100+ lbs weights, not to mention the weights and bars also being MOIST, both gross and not safe.
The second picture is a multipurpose room on the first floor I went to after scorching upstairs, there is nobody in here right now. While upstairs it’s busy, at least 50+ people, so it’s hotter than it probably says with everyone lifting. It’s a cool 71 degrees.
But it’s usually uncomfortably hot anyways on any other day, usually sitting around 72-73 degrees even when it’s not peak hours.
At any given point, there’s at least 2-3 pieces of accessory equipment broken, which takes up to a week (sometimes longer) to be fixed.
I would only recommend using this gym if you go really early or close to closing time, as that’s the only time of day the temperature is bearable and it’s not too overcrowded.
I also understand the Y cannot control how many people are signed up to come here, but the population is a problem, during peak hours I’m often waiting 5-15 mins (sometimes even longer) for racks or machines; I’ve often just skipped doing my main lift first and sacrificed going up in weight so I can at least get a workout in.
Also, I love that people want to socialize and be involved in a gym culture, but this gym is relatively small, and often a lot of the gym bros herd in groups of 2-4 on peak hours and block pathways to walk around. Some, not all. There’s a lot of nicer big lifters here, but many aren’t considerate of others or their space, and it’s mostly only guys doing this…
This all might be relatively “fine” too, but there’s been no mass email or anything like that I’ve received explaining when things like the AC being super high are happening.
Literally the only reason I’d let the review have a star at all, is because ALL of the staff I have experienced have been exceptional individuals, all very kind and willing to help.
I cannot say anything about the classes here, of which Ive not been apart of. But I’ve heard they’re great, as well as the instructors.
7/30/2024
Otherwise, avoid this place.
[Edit] I think the YMCA might have people review manipulating with the Bear Levin family so the Y looks better than it is, most of the only honest reviews are the mid to low ratings.

The Covid measures this place took were horrendous. They policed masks and distancing with more enthusiasm then they do cleaning the bathrooms. It was straight out of a dystopian novel.
The sauna is akin to a McDonald’s ice cream machine. It is always out of order.
This review was long over due and the final straw was the ridiculousness at the pool:
The pool closes for up to an hour for lightning within a 1 mile radius. The pool is an indoor pool….

I’ve called several times to talk to accounting. No one calls me back after I leave a detailed message. No one replies to my emails.

I have an amazing experience every time I visit Bear Levin Studer YMCA! The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home. The Kid Zone is fantastic for my younger sister, and I feel confident leaving them there. The equipment is top-notch and well-maintained, and the pickleball courts are a blast. But what really impresses me is the sense of community. Everyone, from staff to members, is so kind and supportive. Bear Levin Studer YMCA is more than just a gym; it's a welcoming community where everyone feels supported in their wellness journey. I highly recommend it!

Will charge your card unauthorized 25 dollar late fees on 45 dollar memberships. Do not recommend.
Their parking validation glitches and you will receive 65 dollar tickets from an out of state company in New Orleans.
Plenty of other gyms in town avoid this location at all cost unless you enjoy hidden fees and unauthorized charges.

Nice place but the free weight area is too small. During busy times of the day it can get pretty annoying not having any room to workout, get to weights or get to on machine.

I love working out here. Lots of machines to use, free weights, two big rooms for group classes, pool and sauna, basketball courts. The staff are very friendly and helpful. With my membership I can use any YMCA in the country too which is amazing!

The facility locker rooms are unkept & tiny. The strong smell of chlorine in the swimming area is indicative of the water not being remotely clean. On top of that a couple guys had an altercation on the basketball courts forcing them to close off pick up games and raising the rims. Instead of banning the immature individuals seen on video they instead punish the rest of the paying customers who use the facility as an outlet for competitive spirit or simple shoot around/drills. This hurts a certain demographic of people & inhibits responsible members from utilizing the membership thats paid for too its fullest potential. “DAN” does not care. (not a manager I was told) Just a lead. Anyways the facility is not worth the price paid monthly.
