I went to the Bailey's Gym (it became Chuze last year) on Merrill Rd for 25 years of my life, that place was a comfortable home away from home where I could get my workout on. Unfortunately they closed their doors last Friday permanently. I had attended the Monument location a couple of times but always took note about how tiny and overcrowded it seemed to be. I came in at 930 on a Monday morning (today) for a quick workout to find crowds standing around waiting to use equipment and weights. Why Chuze thought it was a good idea to close a gym with 1000 members and tell them to go somewhere even smaller and more crowded is beyond me. If I wanted to only do pushups and dumbbell curls I would workout at home for free. That was all it took for me to go gym shopping. I went ahead and canceled my membership before my annual fee comes out, I'll be frequenting LA Fitness for a few months while a new gym company moves into the old Bailey's Merrill Rd location (should be open by February for anyone interested) I tried but at the end of the day the Monument location is tiny, overcrowded, and in need of a lot of updates within.

Love the variety of equipment to choose from , and the fact there is a women’s area. However it is always dirty , asking staff to clean things appears to be an issue. Would love to take more fitness classes with MISSY she is phenomenal, and a great teacher. But again hesitant to since the quality of cleaning isn’t consistent.

Edit- ended up canceling my membership since the staff really doesn’t care about keeping the gym clean! Found a lovely gym that prioritizes cleanliness

This location and the one on Merril are both shutting down in November. One of the managers let it slip but told me not to say anything because they don’t want word getting out yet. Super shady. They’re just milking every last dollar from people before closing for good on November 15th. No heads-up, no transparency—just quietly dipping out.

I’ve been to the Chuze Fitness location on Monument about four or five times now, and every visit has been a great experience. The gym is spacious and well laid out, so I never feel cramped or like someone’s invading my workout space. Everyone seems genuinely focused on their own fitness and there’s a great sense of mutual respect and motivation among members.

The atmosphere is super positive, and I really appreciate how clean and well-maintained the entire facility is. Whether you’re new to fitness or experienced, this place has a welcoming vibe that makes you want to keep coming back.

Definitely a 5 out of 5 for me! Highly recommend this location if you’re serious about your fitness goals and want to be in a supportive environment.

This gym has gone downhill severely. Disrespectful members destroying the gym. I’ve called about a repeat offender of someone smoking cigarettes in the women’s locker room. No one has reached back out to me and it keeps happening. Today within my hour of being there someone had destroyed one of the punching bags and walked with their muddy shoes all over the turf. Equipment is moved and strewn about everywhere it shouldn’t be. The other day I went to workout at about midnight and a man who was not an employee walked out of the women’s locker room. Multiple times I’ve seen people jump over the entry gate after hours. I’m kind of fed up with how they’re allowing this kind of behavior reoccur. A lot of guys in here scream and yell and are disruptive as well. I can hear them over my headphones! Not a good environment. If you’re considering this gym, just dont. Only plus is the women’s only section, but its equipment is lacking.

Why did this place have to come to Jacksonville?? The facilities are great when they remodel them but their system for memberships are so outdated…they are reverting back to a system with tons of hidden fees! I thought gyms were finally moving away from this nonsense. Right now, the basic plan is 29.99 a month which is fine but then there is a $1 enrollment fee (why?) a $55 annual fee (why?), a $30 fee of you just put a CC and not a checking account (why?) and $50 fee if you cancel (or you can pay 35 a month instead and cancel anytime but why!???).

I have to drive an extra few miles for planet fitness but guess that is what I am doing and highly recommend for anyone trying to sign up for this. If enough people don’t do it then they have to change it. Wish they had just stayed Baileys.

Update to response from company: You could encourage people to use their banking account instead of a CC but charging them 30$ if they don’t is just a cash grab. You could eliminate the dollar fee and just make the monthly fee $35 which would do away with an annual enrollment fee…it’s the same thing (in fact you make $5 more dollars a year). Enough is enough…stop insulting our intelligence.

Just here to acknowledge the review below mine.

I was at the gym and witnessed the incident that the reviewer below, Nasib Ibrahim, is referring to.

Nasib is not being truthful—he was not harassed. He was actually complimented several times for lifting heavy weights. However, since he had headphones in and couldn’t hear what was being said, he just assumed the worst. After removing his headphones, he began yelling at the person, demanding they get away from him and stop "harassing" him.

I can understand why he might have thought someone was being negative, as he was slamming weights and equipment the entire time—clearly struggling to control what he was lifting. For someone who claims to have been going to the gym for 10 years, you’d expect him to understand basic gym etiquette and the community environment here.

This was a complete miscommunication and misunderstanding. The person even apologized if Nasib felt anything inappropriate had occurred.

It seems like he’s just upset that the other individual wasn’t removed from the gym. Honestly, his decision to cancel his membership is probably for the best.

I love this gym. The staff are great, and the customer service is excellent.

Just setting the record straight—because anyone can say anything online.

I joined Bailey’s because it’s close to my house and I really like the gym. The staff is incredible. My husband has ALS, and one thing he really enjoyed was using the massage bed. When he decided to get a membership just for that, the staff went above and beyond, ensuring he didn’t need to go through that process. They took such great care of him during the time he was able to visit, and their kindness and graciousness meant so much to both of us. I truly appreciate their compassion and thoughtfulness.

Been going to this location literally since the day it opened and just today I got the worst response from the curly hair cashier at the register. She was at the counter having a conversation as I was patiently waiting to purchase some protein and went to help another customer. As she got done she never acknowledged me and walked from behind the counter. I asked is anyone going to help me she said I'm off and walked away. If you were off then why were you just helping someone else or behind the counter in the first place? Someone should have a conversation with her.

I’ve been coming here for a couple months, I like the gym and I love the ladies only room. But this place doesn’t look like it’s been cleaned since I signed up. I come in 5-6 days a week. There’s been the same pieces of trash on the floor where I stretch for months. The women’s only room has had the same fingernail under one of the machines since the day I did my tour. That’s nasty. Makes me uncomfortable working out here whilst spending more money than the other gyms in the area charge… I pay almost 30 bucks a month and can’t bring a guest, can’t use the massage machine and the place is unclean.

7/25/24 UPDATE: THIS GYM IS SO RIDICULOUS. Get rid of Joey and get rid of the raggedy worker in the play area! My daughter scraped her knee yesterday while being in the play area. My daughter has never been hurt in the 9 years she's been going there. BUT all of a sudden since hiring this hood girl, who does nothing but sit at the table (doesn't pay attention to the children), and decides to clean the bathroom before closing because she's ready to leave....this is when my daughter gets hurt. Autumn was the best, she was so kind and considerate! Now y'all have stooped to hiring anything that applies. I want to know how can she possibly be doing her job if she's sitting down at the table hidden behind a bag? How can she watch the children if she cleans the bathroom prior to closing? It's because she's NOT DOING HER JOB, SHE'S NOT WATCHING THE CHILDREN! I have complained several times now. I've also complained about the tags the children wear now that have entirely too much information on them. So I started taking the tags with me because there's too much personal information on them AND because they are not disposed of properly! Since I have started doing this, there has been an even more downward shift in service by this girl and Joey. They keep telling me that I can't keep the tags. STOP IT! THE TAG HAS OUR INFORMATION ON IT. I CAN TAKE MY OWN INFORMATION WITH ME! And that is exactly what I did yesterday after being told by Joey that he needed my daughter's tag in order to do an incident report. That's so stupid! All that information is in the system, y'all are the ones that printed it out. At this point I am being harassed because I have voiced my complaints. This has crossed boundaries now because when these issues affect my daughter and her comfort; I'm not playin around, her well being is not a game.

🦋 The new changes with Chuze supposedly started in November 2023. I have been told by Joey that an email was sent to members around November stating the changes that were made to members' benefits. I have searched my email several times to find this email. I receive emails sent from Bailey's, and they come to my inbox, not spam. So where is this email? What date was this email sent out? No one can tell me! Stop lying to members and stop trying to force members to upgrade their membership when their membership already included all amenities. I am beyond frustrated with the lies and being inconvenienced when I come to the gym. I came to work out today, 3/16/24, and never had an issue with bringing my daughter to the play area until today. The last time I brought her was a few weeks ago. So what changed from then until now with MY MEMBERSHIP that will not allow me to bring her? NOTHING! So I came here and was unable to work out because they would not accept her in the kids' play area. This was even after I called the night prior, went on the link that was sent via email to reserve a spot, and spoke to Jared at the Northside location. The link does not even bring up locations in Florida, so the link is inaccurate. Members are not being unreasonable about the changes, but Bailey's and Chuze are choosing to inconvenience their members because they don't have it figured out. And instead of y'all admitting that y'all didn't properly notify members of the changes to their benefits, you're trying to cover up! BE UPFRONT AND HONEST, correct your mistakes by doing the right thing. And the right thing is to grandfather in members who have already had all the amenities prior to Chuze coming in. DO THE RIGHT THING!

Been here for over 10 years and find it wild that the same month “Chuze” fitness takes over the A/C is broken and I can’t bring guests anymore? It has been 2 months since it has broken and no end in sight? multiple promises that it will be fixed to no avail. Now the turf room is above comfortable or safe temperatures. No one is in charge and no one knows when it will be fixed. Might have to cancel membership and go somewhere else with my family. Scared of where my local gym is headed. Shame on you Chuze for coming to our city and ruining a staple gym. There is a nice lady at the front and gentlemen who is always cleaning and they’re great, other than that, the place has had a huge decline.

This Bailey's location has significantly deteriorated since the Chuze takeover, affecting everything from cleanliness to equipment maintenance. Air conditioning in the functional training room has been completely broken for weeks now. The most noticeable decline, however, is in the childcare area. They've replaced long-time, dedicated employees, whom our children trusted, with staff who seem to be there just for the paycheck. The TVs are now excessively loud, with chairs set up in front of them so the staff can sit at the desk and do the bare minimum. They've also introduced a rule allowing only one parent in the room at a time (are they still stuck in Covid times?) which does not allow much if any comfort for a child transitioning into being separated from a parent. I signed up when this location was great and I've been a loyal Bailey's member for two years, visiting the Monument location daily. however, this recent decline has encouraged me to take my business elsewhere.

Great Gym but needs some maintenance. Shower stem valves need to be replaced In pretty much every men’s shower. This is the issue trying to get hot water and the leaking issue from the shower heads. Then a good cleaning. I can always see dirt, hair and grime in the corners in the changing area of the shower stalls.

Returning after a few months.
1. There is no music. Receptionist said she doesn’t know when it will be fixed.
2. Very clean! Spray bottles are all full and in place.
3. Men’s bathroom are clean.
4. Showers were never fixed. All but one flows continuously when off. Water is Luke warm at best. Clumps of hair in every shower. Slip resistant matts never pulled out to clean underneath.
If you’re looking for an early morning gym that you can take a shower and go straight to work I would pass on this gym. I wrote the review above a year ago and nothing was addressed. Shower heads are flowing instead of just a leak now. All shower valves need to be replaced.
It’s always poorly staffed.

Today , I had the most disrespectful & tasteless interaction with the “ Personal Fitness “ trainer. About a week ago i paid to have my membership switched over to the correct location after the nice young lady at the front advised that it defaults sometimes which was fine ! Went over & had it switched i also had to pay $10. After paying I went yesterday and was told again by the gentleman at the front he can buzz me in due to him seeing the notes and to speak with the manager upon leaving. Before leaving I waited an additional 5-10 minutes to speak with him for a very vague response of “ I put the request in , however it take 3 + business days to switch over but I can make sure they know about the issue & to let you in “ and i would also have to come during business hours which again was fine. Fast forward to today .. AGAIN i tried to buzz in and it said see manager when I got to the desk the lady wasn’t able to find my account at first and then on top of that she explained she was new and that i would have to wait. The “ Personal Fitness “ trainer walked up on me very closely and explained that he didn't see anything in the system AT ALL and that it had not be done I explained to him NUMEROUS times that I spoke with the manager and he continued cutting me off & over talking me to the point where I couldn't get a word out of my mouth. In addition he told me “ I wasn’t listening because if I was , I’d understand that’s not a issue that the monument location needs to deal with its the Merrill “ after what seemed like a screaming match he then just stated “ Go to Merrill “ again suggesting I go BACK to a location I already paid for. I then let him know I had a receipt and he then told me “ Its no way you have a receipt for that “ After pulling up the receipt he FINALLY let me in the gym however after spending all of that time to get in + the distasteful conversation just had I was highly uncomfortable to continue working out. Especially as a Black man & Police officers in the area I was slightly uncomfortable to continue working out. Unfortunately I haven’t had the best experience after switching to this gym which is disappointing because they have an amazing Gym hope ill be able to sort this situation out respectfully Hasn’t even been a month .. Also let me know you guys have no corporate offices or nobody higher up which is surprising to me as-well

Moved next to this place and thought I would get a membership, as long as I could pay in cash (because I don’t trust them with my credit card, due to the reviews below). Turns out, because everyone is now asking to pay in cash, they started requiring credit card payment recently. I considered that and their extremely high prices (close to $50 a month, due to $130 sign up fee and $80 annual fee) and chose not to sign up. Going to drive further for a better deal from a gym with decent reviews and reasonable prices.

Friendly staff, competitive pricing, but most importantly, open 24/7. The ceilings are lower than the standard warehouse gym, making it feel a bit tighter, but is kept quite clean, and has most everything you'd hope for including dbells past 100. Cycling, Zumba and other classes offered as well.

I don't like only 3 things abt this place: you can't terminate the agreement, there aren't restrooms, sofas, places for taking a rest or ten cabins (as in planeta fitness for ex) and no any fitness groups/classes.

Equipment is fine. Music they play is horrible. No one wants to listen to 2000’s radio hits. The one on St. Johns and Beach Blvd. play way better music. Only a problem when you forget headphones. The other issue I’ve noticed at all Baileys. The locker room are extremely outdated especially the saunas.

I called to cancel my membership due to a military move... I purchased a 1 year 1 time membership in 2021 knowing I would move which is why I didnt buy month to month. I let them know in Nov of 2022 that I was still indeed moving and to see what I needed to do to make sure I wasnt charged with anything later on. The woman at Baileys said nothing, I can change it right now myself and you have a good move. I thought wow that was easy... well I was wrong because months later, I am now in a different state, they charged me for a month to month that I never even had. I called and he said you had to call corporate to cancel... call corporate they said I was supposed to provide written notice and she was charging me for another month too for cancelling to include theor 30 day notice... this is a scam... you tell your desk people to say one thing then the corporate office gets to say we provided no notice... why didnt the first lady tell me to email and ask for it to be cancelled? I called in Nov most than enough time to make sure my membership didnt renew and they made sure it was just a call so we could get to this point and get another 100 out of a military family. Disgusting. Predatory. Gross. SCAM. DO NOT USE THIS GYM...

Their corporate office team is horrible. Didn’t know they charged an annual fee until recently. I even questioned why it wasnt debited at the same time my actual monthly payment was due. So I called last week and spoke to a woman in their corporate office. Whomever she was, she was very nice, Was told to call back on Monday to receive a EXCEPTION credit of $20 so I paid the renewal fee minus the $20. Said she would notate my account. It’s is Monday and I called back. This Jennifer chick whom I spoke to before and hung up on because she was plain nasty, answered the phone. She actually refused to transfer me to the woman that I spoke with even though the woman told me to call back which was today. I even spoke to Mike, the Manager at the Southside club who specifically told me to talk to Carly. So this Jennifer chick took it upon herself to cancel my membership for $20… what a joke (I will have the last laugh) I was a member at the Southside location for 2 years. I will MISS the staff at this location. Had a lot of good conversations, met some cool people…Mike, Mike Kelly and Neal and others, I will miss you. But I will not be returning. To you Jennifer, we all have a chance to bless people and do what’s right but you decided to ignore the blessing….I guess misery loves company…Thank you for incompetence and robotic response. The individuals in the actual gym do a better job of servicing customers than you ever will. You would never be able to do my job nor would my company ever hire a nasty person like you. I will be disputing the charge as fraud with my bank because they basically charged me for a service that I never received.

Pros of Baileys: Wide variety of machines, 95 percent working. Wasn't so busy in off hours that i had to wait for any machines. Members get a key fob to use 24 hrs a day. I did a 7 day free trial.

Cons/Reasons I hesitate to give them my credit card information: high price, frequent mention in reviews of abusive billing practices from the corporate office - people being billed without knowing it, bait and switches, extra unexpected charges, being signed up for another year when they cancelled and then the bill being sent to collections impacting their credit report, people not being let out of contracts for extremely valid reasons that Baileys told them they'd be able to get out for. No basketball court. Bathrooms dirty.

Went in person May 2021 to cancel my membership due to relocation to Georgia.
It was not canceled and I did not notice for several months as I was moving my family across country making many changes tune mini different accounts I suggested that we meet in the middle on these charges because I have some responsibility to continue to check my monthly statement. Another time I wish I could give no stars.The corporate office is truly a greedy bunch. Been a member for years and an auto accident prevented me from being able to work out. Called in plenty of time to cancel membership and visited the gym. Spoke with 3 different employees, which includes the Monument manager Chris, both corporate people, Dana and Sarah, all telling me different things. Even provided them a letter from my doctor, just in case. They billed me the yearly and 2 more months. Chris even suggested me calling my bank to dispute the charge but then told Dana a different story. That little bit of unprofessionalism and lack of consideration will cost them many customers. Thankfully, I am in a position where I meet newcomers to Jacksonville and residents all the time. I will stick to the facts but will tell anyone I meet or know how they are. Would definitely not join them.

I was very disappointed in the treatment I got with Bailey’s when I notice a fee assessed outside of my normal membership and not on the day it drafts. When the funds were not available I was notified there was an attempt so I added the funds even though I was unaware of what it was for. I also added the fee for my membership ship since it was due in a couple of days. I then looked days later and noticed I was charged an additional fee for not having the funds available for the non routine annual equipment fee that was charged before I was with them for a full year. I asked to have the fee removed because now it was creating my membership to be short. I was told no. I asked when was my membership over. She told me in days. I asked to cancel. She canceled without hesitation. I would think me being a customer was more important than a $20 fee but I guess not. I was told they would have someone from my actual location call me but never did. I NEVER had these issues with LA Fitness. I wish I lived closer to them because I would have never left. This is the 1st time in 12 years that I have not been a member of a gym. SMH

Their corporate office are a bunch of crooks! First I prepaid and purchased a 1 year membership for my son as a Xmas gift. After the 1 year was done they continued to charge my credit card. My son had no idea he still had a membership. Disputed the 2 months on double billing. They said, no. They only credit for medical reasons including COVID. So then I presented our COVID tests when we were sick including a doctors note stating I was under medical treatment from a car accident and Corporate still said, no. I’ve been with them for years and they have 3 other accounts all from my house and this is how they treat their members. Bunch of thieves!

A gym for people who come to workout. Here you are respected for your accomplishments where at other national chains they foster an environment of snowflakes who take up space while needing their "fitness journey" (of showing up, taking selfies for social media, and leaving) validated. And those like me who clearly workout are put down and constantly insulted.*cough cough* LA Fitness and Esporta. If you're looking for a gym that exists to be a gym and not daycare for people's feels, then Bailey's is where you need to go. I like to use the boxing area. Plenty of weight machines. Baileys is a pretty decent gym. Been here 7 years now. Good monthly rates, 24/7 access. Only issue I have: the big corporate competitors, when equipment or something in the locker room breaks, gets fixed immediately. Baileys however, you can tell owners are very cheap when it comes to repairs, maintenence, plumbing issues in the locker room, etc.

My daughter has been trying to cancel for the better part of 6 months. But everytime I meet their cancelation policy they tack on more personal information they need. Her husband got deployed to Hawaii so I called and went to Cancel. They asked why she told them they are moving, they then proceeded to tell her that she can't cancel because they needed her new address. They hadn't even looked yet so she had no address. So they told her she can't cancel and will HAVE TO CONTINUE TO PAY THEIR MONTHLY FEE.

I’m from St. Augustine but will occasionally come lift at this location with friends from Jacksonville. I’m leaving this review specifically because of two employees I came across working the front desk - Monica and Danny. They were both super nice and super helpful. Both were friendly and always help me with a day pass. I’ve been to many baileys that I’m not a home member of and have not come across a better front desk than the one at this location!
