In the past 4 years of living in Jacksonville, I’ve had 4 different addresses, 3 different jobs, and been a member of 2 churches… but I’ve only had one CrossFit membership. that’s because to me, Crucible embodies all of the best aspects of a CrossFit gym, and honestly none of the worst. the programming is always a fun challenge, I’ve learned and grown SO much from the coaches, and the community is really something special. So grateful for this gym!

This is an absolutely fantastic gym. The owner is very knowledgeable and has a comprehensive set of skills and certifications that allow them to create top notch programming. The gym members are friendly, and it is structured without being rigid. There is ample equipment to go around.

I love dropping in here when I visit my friends in Jacksonville. I joke often with my wife that we should to Jacksonville just to be able to go to CrossFit Crucible. The coaching is always impeccable and the people are kind and fun to exercise with. It is one of my favorite crossfit gyms I’ve ever been to!

The programming is my favorite across all of the CrossFit gyms I’ve attended. The rotation and schedule of strength training has been more beneficial to my physical strength and health. Coach Colleen has so much individual attention on athletes’ progressβ€”she remembers my numbers, where I’m at in learning new skills or movements, and knows my strengths and weaknesses in regards to injuries and proficiencies. She also loves to teach and is THE most patient instructor. Crucible is a true home feel and both the atmosphere and workouts have changed my life for the better. Come drop in and say hi!

Choosing to go to Crucible Crossfit in 2024 might as well include the prerequisite of owning a Delorean. It really feels like you're going back in time. Whether it be the programming that has existed in perpetuity since 2015, the longing for a time when there were good athletes there, or the equipment that hasn't been updated in close to a decade, they have it all!

When you enter a crossfit gym, you enter for three things: Programming, Vibe, and coaching. Let's break them down one by one.

1) Programming: Head coach/owner is convinced that because she's been involved in the sport for 10+ years, she doesn't need outside programming. It's all home grown, Zero challenge, zero progression..just slogs and 400m runs and "dball slam" style workouts. When Crucible was relevant years ago, they were innovative, challenging, and mentally demanding to survive a day here. Now? Get ready for lots of "jackie" metcons.

2) Vibe: Sign your soul away to one of the cliques present at the gym or don't plan on ever hanging out with anyone. I'm not saying the people are not fun, in fact that's the SINGLE best part of this gym. There's genuine, solid people here. It just is extremely "clique" based. You're either "one of the 5 am crew" (which owner openly talks about as her favorite class) or you are one of the "preferred veterans" that has stuck around for years, somehow. There's almost zero extroverts around to welcome you. You better pick a crew and hope they take a liking to you, or your social relevance and engagement will be zero. If you're a heads down "just go workout and come home" .... you may be fine.

3) Coaching: Absolutely zero critiques that the female head coach isn't technically gifted, in fact quite the opposite. She's a games level athlete in a past life. She knows what she is doing from a technical delivery and execution of coaching standpoint. However, there's one of her, and her exhaustion from outside of gym drama, years of bad business decisions and grueling hours zaps her ability to deliver for her clientele the way she probably wishes she could. For a lot of your experience, you're expected to "know what to do" or get yelled at if you're out of place in packed classes.

Crucible is consistently over packed at night because they can't afford a bigger spot (ever heard of online sign up?) to allow proper execution of class layouts. Day to day they're barely getting by in terms of equipment (very frequently have signs on machines that don't work, or you'll just be mid metcon when you sit down on a rower that doesn't actually row). Mix all of that with an environment that used to be a staple of Jacksonville crossfit and you get Crucible: Simmered down mediocrity that isn't thriving, just simply existing.

If you're looking to truly attack your fitness, or take yourself to an elite level, this would be an amazing option: back in 2015. With the availability of top tier training within 10 miles....actual new age equipment, and elite programming that exists for all gyms now.....there's really no educated rationale for spending your money at Crucible in 2024.

Last couple points: do not forget to grab a tetanus shot before you come in, seeing as most of the barbells are completely rusted out and haven't really "spun" since 'nam. Make sure you own knee pads on "bodyweight lunge" days....you have to lunge through an undulating pebble filled cement parking lot, commonly waiting for cars to come within an inch of you during workouts. Speaking of...ever have to use a bathroom before a workout starts? Good luck, it's in a different building (a church) that you have to walk over to soaking wet in sweat while walking through churchgoers. Nothing better. The power of Christ shall compel you.

1 star strictly because the people are cool. That's really the only positive you can drag out of a culture, building and business that should have been left in the past.

Oh and Coach....the money you owe me when your system malfunctioned and then you blocked me on Venmo when I requested it back from you? Nah, let's call it even.

Dropped in for two days, awesome gym! All the coaches were full of energy and made me feel right at home. Lifts were great. The gym itself was clean, had alot of various sections with everything you need, easy to navigate.

Beware of this place they will not cancel your membership and will continue to charge you even after they say they they are going to stop. My husband has asked them numerous times to cancel his membership and they continue to charge us $100 a month even though he hasn't gone since November. I have opened a dispute with my credit card company in hopes that they will stop. Look below, other reviewers have had the same problem.

Exactly what you would expect when you go to a crossfit box. They have amazing coaches, great athletes and stellar programming. I've dropped in a few times now and have always left completely gassed. Can't wait to come back to town!

I waited for months for this relationship to get better before writing this.

The facility: actually pretty good in terms of space and location and was the sole reason I decided to join.

The clients: some elite athletes, and certainly some new friends. But it seems everything is geared toward the elite and not necessarily the new people.

If the above is what you need/want then you should adjust my rating up, however I will not ever recommend this facility to anyone for the following reasons.

The facility: Bathrooms are not clean, and there is clutter everywhere

The Owners/Partners: I wasn't able to attend as much as I would like so I cancelled, after verbal notification, written notification, recorded notification, multiple Facebook conversations and 9 calls to the number on the website (I guess not their number)... I continue to get charged my monthly membership. I have since investigated with my local attorney a way to try and correct this behavior for others and I am leaning toward letting my bank resolve the dispute at his recommendation but part of me wants to make an example out of this gross neglect.

My advice if this is the closest, most convenient location (the primary reason people go there) then buyer beware, and keep logs of everything.

I have written dozens of stories of locations that are exceptional, and owners who care. This isn't one of those.

Best box ever! I am a 59 yr old female with no athletic background and receive excellent coaching (very patient!!) Coaches were just as excited about my first 20 in box jump as someone getting their first muscle up! Colleen and Lance are the best and can scale anyone for any issue - So glad I found them! The members are awesome, great group of people - so glad I found them.

Phenomenal box! Fantastic coaching. The gym has all types of people. Elite, teenagers, regulars and new crossfitters. Each workout can be modified to your ability. During the entire 3 years that I have been a member, I get as much one on one coaching and attention as the most elite athletes in the box. Lance has been a loyal and positive motivator without judgment. On any given day, he helps us give it all and become better versions of ourselves. Crucible or bust!

I've been working out here 4 months now and am really enjoying it! This is exactly what I needed to have happen for me right now. I couldn't be happier.

The programming is hard but manageable. Everyone is friendly. The facilities are nice with several bathrooms and two showers. There's the main room for class, and a back room for side work and additional equipment. And when it's nice out, there's plenty of space outside (& minimal traffic) to spread out!

I've also been dealing with injuries off and on (no, not CrossFit related. Everyone assumes that.), and the coaching staff has no hesitation when offering me another modification. It's hard to find a reason to skip when they're so accommodating!

I highly recommend stopping by and seeing what it's all about!
