(Downtown Ambassador Program).
Downtown Orlando stands as a shining example of civic hospitality and urban excellence, where warm welcomes meet well-organized community services such as the Downtown Ambassador Program.
My experience in the heart of Orlando revealed a city alive with humanity and innovation, embracing diversity and collaboration to create a truly inclusive environment.
A powerful reminder that smart cities are built first through awareness and culture — then through technology. 🌆

I came to the Downtown YMCA hoping for a supportive, family-friendly environment as I return to fitness after having a baby. Unfortunately, my first visit back left me feeling intimidated, unsafe, and unwelcome.
After only 20 minutes in the gym (including signing my baby into daycare and a restroom break), I was on the thigh press machine for just a few minutes. I had finished two sets and was briefly writing down my reps and weight when a man came up, hands on his hips, frowning, and demanded to know how long I’d be. A woman nearby also frowned and told me to “get off my phone,” even though I was only logging my workout.
As I went to finish my set, the man moved closer and stared at me during a very vulnerable exercise. When I stood up, he was nearly pressed against my backside (extremely inappropriate and invasive) while I cleaned the machine. It was intimidating and unacceptable.
Instead of checking on me or asking what had happened, a staff member approached and, rather than being supportive, told me I needed “to share” the machine because other people wanted a turn, and added, “that’s not that hard, right?” in a condescending tone. I had only been on the machine for about five minutes, and no one gave me the chance to explain. The staff appeared to side with the people confronting me, leaving me feeling bullied, belittled, and unsupported.
As a new mom, I was simply hoping for a safe place to care for my health while my baby was in daycare. Instead, I left shaken and disappointed. I no longer feel comfortable returning. I truly hope the Downtown YMCA will take harassment, intimidation, and member safety more seriously, because everyone deserves to feel safe and respected when they come to exercise.

My kids and I love this location. Clean well kept and organized. Amazing staff, kids zone and exercise facilities that allow my 8-9 yr old to use with adult supervision, because my son has been wanting to go inside planet fitness since he was 7 so could you image his excitement lol. Big gym and amazing pool indoors and out. I have the max, something if you could I would say go for it.

I’ve been a member at the YMCA for 35 years. I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years . Unfortunately, the downtown YMCA has been deteriorating over the past 10 years. It’s not as friendly as it used to be. It’s not as clean as it used to be. The men’s locker room smells bad, and is atrocious! One concern , when you look around, you’re not going to see many of the employee smiling. It’s not so much about what they’re saying, but what they’re not saying.. The energy in the building is low .I feel the employees are Unappreciated and underpaid. While the management sits upstairs making nice pay checks , The employees downstairs, who work with the clients and the front desk are getting next to minimum wage. Ask them why they were there? They will tell you it’s a job. Most of them have to work two jobs because the pay is not enough. It’s unfortunate, because at one time there was a lot of great energy in the downtown YMCA. Furthermore , they have raised the prices again, $65 a month is ridiculous. Most families can’t even afford that . The big Chiefs sit upstairs in their office rarely come down Stairs. If they did, they would see what I see everyday. Employees are not smiling . Most seem distracted or stressed out . Even getting a a genuine greeting is difficult these days .Try walking down the hallway and see how many employees smile or say hello? The central Florida YMCA used to have such a positive vibe . Now it’s gone . Just a lot of people Hustling to get their work out with employees who really dont want to be there , but they need the job. Why have I stayed there for 35 years, because it’s one block from my house. If the management could come downstairs and use more positive Reinforcement or Incentives-for their employees , I believe their employees would be happier . happier employees, attracts happier clients. But this has to start from the top!

I really enjoy going to the YMCA, but unfortunately, the two locations near my home, the one in Avalon and the one in Blanchard Park, have closed, and there's no location in my area to serve the community. This location is truly wonderful. I hope they'll open a similar one in my area someday because it's not close enough for me to get there. I've tried contacting customer service and asking if there will be any changes, but they don't seem to pay much attention.

Large facility. The men’s locker room is a stinker. Always smells bad and could use a good deep cleaning. The steam room seems to be broken often
. I wish they’d convert the large room downstairs (where machines and treadmills are) into the weight room as the weight room is kind of small for how many people show up. Good pool, inside and out. Everyone who works here is nice.
Edit: The men’s locker room is cruisey. There are other YMCAs in town with a steam / sauna / shower area that are much more comfortable.

I went to this location 1 time. I had checked my daughter into the childcare area for about an hour. My daughter had no problem going into the childcare area care play area, I observed her playing with the other kids for a few minutes while I spoke to the staff then left. I went to workout for an hour and when I had picked my daughter up they told me she cried a few times, she ran into my arms and started fussing - I have my daughter 24/7 so I figured she was confused and missed me. I walked her out of the facility and put her car seat. I went to go get lunch and I took my daughter out of her car seat and noticed that she was having a hard time moving her arm. I immediately called the YMCA and asked what happened. I got transferred to the wrong location & was told I would be contacted by the right location that same day (no one ever called me that same day- I was contacted the next day and I missed the call, I didn’t recognize the number & when I called back no one answered). I took my daughter to the hospital and sure enough, her arm had popped out of place & the doctor had to pop it back in. Unfortunately there are no cameras in that center so they couldn’t even tell me what happened. I went to the physical location to have a conversation today and the lady I don’t even know her name, she never introduced herself - told me that my daughter was injured under my care and that their staff didn’t do anything wrong. She was accusing me of having my daughter get hurt with me. My daughter was fine when I dropped her off under their care & when I had picked her up that’s when I saw she was having issues moving her arm. Needless to say, the way they handled & remedied this situation was unprofessional. She did not offer any apology for anything & projected the blame on me. If you bring your children there please be cautious.

Please it is time to renovate and update the locker rooms. I can only speak for the men's locker room and it needs some love. Especially the sauna and steam. You guys need to do something about some of the members using the sauna to hang out and dry their dirty wet and dirty clothes too. Difficult to relax and enjoy yourself while some dude is wringing out his wet socks over the sauna oven

I have been going to this YMCA for 24 years. The last 10 months, I have asked at least five people if I could work in and many say "No". The guy today said he had only a few more sets but stayed on the machine for another 20 minutes after already being on the machine for 20 minutes.
Many times people just sit at a machine while looking at their phone.
Could the Y, cut out phones when on machines? What can be done about the gym users that won't share?
Can the Y bring back towels and spray disinfectant? Many times, the wipes have not been restocked but then you also have those that leave the machine all sweaty with no wipe down.

They have many activities for adults and kids. 2nd floor was great with many new and well taken care of equipment but Main floor gym area was terrible and it smelled like pee and could not take it anymore. The gym equipment was also old and worn out. Overall it was OK because they have a child development center till late afternoon and makes a huge difference. My choice is 3.5 stars but Google Review does not allow me that way 😅

I love the facility and have been an on and off member for years. If I didn’t have a baby and just wanted to rate the facility I would say 4 stars for sure. BUT we had a negative experience with the childcare center with my 9 month old will not be going back. Unfortunately, I watched as staff members ignored her as she cried and gagged on the ground. They were not tending to other children or otherwise occupied either so I could not logically identify a reason for them to not acknowledge her or make any attempt to comfort her. Babies of course will cry but, for me, ignoring her is unacceptable especially when the staff members are standing there.

The facilities are nice, but unfortunately I think it’s time for me to find a new gym especially with active and fit charging extra for additional gym memberships. A couple months ago they started closing parts of locker room for inappropriate behavior. The other day when I was in an older gentlemen followed me from sauna to steam room removing his towel and touching. I told the staff with a exact explanation of what he was wearing out and exactly when he left the locker room (they have cameras they can look) and I honestly don’t even think they wrote it down. It’s very disappointing seeing a Christian organization unable to enforce Christian behaviors on their property.
Edit to respond: Just start enforcing the rules, you clearly are aware of inappropriate behavior (why else have a sign on showers saying their closed because of inappropriate behavior), so just start doing something about it that could actually protect your members.

This is my favorite Y location in Central Florida due to the classes offered. I split my time at a few locations but end up here most of the week because the schedule is accommodating for mine, the instructors are great, and the culture at this gym is courteous. My two hopes are that they open later on weekends and that they continue to add more Les Mills classes to the schedule 😀 Body Combat and Body Pump are both great here!

This is a large facility with tons of equipment and classes but lays out across more intimate spaces, unlike many gyms where one can feel awkwardly on display for the rest of the room.
Although there are screens available for entertainment (distraction?) in many of the spaces, there are beautiful views of nature as well, especially in the loft.
Basketball courts, pilates equipment, indoor and outdoor pools, childcare, steam rooms, and more are available but for me the best part is the friendly staff, supportive class teachers, and fellow members, many of whom I've become friends with beyond the gym.
Great location, family focused, excellent pricing, camps for kids, programs for elderly... I'm a big fan!

Any class with Crystal is great, lots of classes to choose from, much to offer from an older facility.

This is a great Y. Great friendly staff and facilities. I will give 5 stars, however for the past year there has been a random mold smell in the second floor. I have brought this to the attention of the staff and management and nothing has been done to resolve the issue. As matter a fact the issue is getting worst and many members are complaining about it. This has forced to go work out at other Central Florida Y's. I hope something is done soon to address this uncomfortable issue.
Update 5/8/2024: Cleanliness has been an ongoing issue at this YMCA men locker room. Flies in the showers? Again I have brought this to their attention and still no resolution and the blame is shifted to the cleaning crew. My perception is that they are not proactive but reactive to issues at this facility.

The Y is the perfect place for families! As a mom of a toddler, I’ve been able to go back into my workout routine thank you to the amazing child care the center offers!

Overall, The downtown YMCA is a good, affordable gym.
Pros: There’s a good assortment of fitness equipment and machines so you can mix up your workout and there is plenty of parking which is always a plus . Centrally located to a lot of neighborhoods, close to downtown but not actually downtown.
Staff is friendly.
Cons: During peak hours is can get a little busy but that’s pretty expected . It can be annoying when they close down rooms for classes. Layout is kind of odd but I don’t mind bouncing around to different rooms/ floors now that I know where everything is . Closing at 5pm on Saturday and Sunday is a downside as well.
Overall would recommend and have enjoyed my membership so far.

The Y is good for a family to workout and plays sports. My biggest gripe is that it’s hard to workout efficiently. The machines are all over the place on two floors and there doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to the layout. The weight room, which is very small, often has guys camp out on machines with their buddy’s.

Downtown Orlando YMCA is my go-to gym. The people are friendly, it’s not too busy most days, and there’s (usually) a culture of people cleaning up after themselves. The down-side is the layout of the gym. Sometimes I have to bounce back and forth between the two floors to see what weightlifting equipment is available. Also, some of the equipment, like the cable machines, is a little worn and not the smoothest. But they do appear to replace and add to the gym equipment, so the staff seems to be responsive to people’s needs.
