Miami Lakes Athletic Club is an outstanding fitness center that offers a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere and top-quality equipment. The trainers are professional, friendly, and always ready to help members reach their goals. With clean facilities, diverse workout options, and excellent classes, it’s the perfect place to stay fit, motivated, and part of a positive community.

The tennis situation has gone downhill and I am genuinely concerned about staying. Ricky has turned what should be a safe, supportive space into a confrontational and hostile environment. His behavior is arbitrary and vindictive, and minors are left unsupervised. Racquets have also gone missing, with only him knowing their location. I personally spoke with Anthony and Annette which suppose to help. Never help. Real shame. Ricky always annoying and lack of business knowledge. Shame on them.

I don’t normally write reviews, but after the great experience I’ve had here, I felt it was worth sharing the advantages of being a member. I’ve been part of this athletic club for many years, and it has truly been a place where both my children and I have grown. My kids played basketball here as they were growing up, and it has always been a welcoming space for families in our community.

The staff is phenomenal, and with Andrea’s guidance, the facility continues to thrive and serve our community in such a meaningful way. It’s not just a gym — it’s a place that offers something for everyone, whether you’re here to work out, play sports, or simply find a moment to relax and rejuvenate.

Love my gym so much but they need to bring in more stuff. Shulas had reformer Pilates, they had the spa, hot tubs, etc. once Miami lakes took over they took out everything. We need all this stuff back!!!! Classes have also gone down hill. Please bring back !

I have been a member of Miami Lakes Athletic Club for over 25 years, and I want to take a moment to give credit where credit is due. Over the past couple of years, Miami Lakes Athletic Club has made an incredible transformation. The staff is consistently professional and welcoming, the facilities inside and out have been beautifully updated, and the overall atmosphere is better than ever.

A special thank you goes to Andrea Gil for her leadership and dedication—her impact is felt throughout the club. I’m genuinely proud to be a member, and after all these years, it still feels like home. Keep up the excellent work! Sincerely, Marlon

I’ve never posted a review before, but this place definitely deserves my first. I’ve been coming here for almost 20 years now. It is one of the cleanest gyms I’ve ever been in. Everyone takes care of this gym, from regular people working out to the actual staff. There are also many great classes here! I go to two classes a day with my husband. My son and daughter also workout here every day. I recommend this gym to anyone who wants a well kept gym, that rarely gets filled up, and has great people to meet inside.

I’m willing to work with him, but the culture he created needs to change. Enough is enough. Basta ya!

Miami Lakes Athletic Club continues to improve every day! The service is outstanding, the machines are brand new, there’s a private training room, and a wide variety of fitness classes cater to all levels. The tennis, basketball, and pickleball courts are meticulously organized and well-managed, ensuring fair access for all members across open play, leagues, and coaching sessions.

The team consistently maintains a professional and courteous environment, making every member feel welcomed and valued. Staff members are always attentive and ready to assist with any questions or concerns. Special recognition goes to Mr. Anthony and Annette, whose eagerness to help and genuine friendliness elevate the member experience.

With knowledgeable trainers and instructors, Miami Lakes Athletic Club goes far beyond the typical gym—offering an atmosphere more akin to an exclusive fitness club. The locker rooms, complete with top-notch showers and sauna, further enhance this premium experience.

First, I wish I could give it zero stars!

I have been a member of the club since 2006, and there has never been a tennis director as disrespectful as current one and unfortunately the club is turning a blind eye in pursuit of profits

The latest development is limiting the time the members are allow to play as seen in the attached image.

If you are a working profesional and want to join and be able to play at decent times then you will have to join of of the clinics and take a private lesson and fork more money to the club. Otherwise you have to play at the times they allow you to.

Also for those that decide to play from 8-10pm, be advise there are always lights that are out and they take months to be changed. Also nets are routinely missing the center strap or are higher or lower than they should be.

There is only one court that is properly maintained and it is off limits to members (see the line ** in the pic).

I’ve been a member of MLAC, formerly known as Shulas Athletic Club, for over 25 yrs. I’m an avid tennis player (playing 3-5/week) for the past 37 years.
Our present head tennis pro, Ricky, is both fair and friendly, an excellent tennis instructor and with the sensational group of tennis professionals that he has assembled has made it a pleasure to play tennis at MLAC. They all do there respective jobs in maintaining the courts, especially the labor intensive Har-Tru (clay) courts.
Ricky and his team along with the support of, in my opinion, the best general manger (Anthony) that this club has had in the 25 plus years that I’ve been a member have turned MLAC into the best place to play tennis in our beautiful city of Miami Lakes.
Thank you for the great job everyone is doing!

I’ve been a member of Miami Lakes Athletic Club (formerly Shula’s) for nearly 10 years, primarily to enjoy the tennis courts and the community it fostered. For years, it WAS a welcoming atmosphere; members bonding over matches, in-house tournaments, and fundraisers that made the Club feel like a true part of Miami Lakes’ foundation.
That has changed dramatically since Ricky Martinez took over. Courts are now overwhelmingly reserved for the Women’s League (often multiple leagues at once) and coaching sessions, leaving paying members with little to no access. On top of this, Ricky has displayed unprofessional, aggressive behavior toward long-standing members. Even more concerning, member equipment has gone missing, with Ricky somehow being the one who “knows” where it ends up.
Despite repeated complaints made directly to Annette and Anthony - in person, by phone, and by email - there has been zero response, let alone resolution. Why should members continue to pay for a service we are increasingly unable to use?
This Club is supposed to be a family environment, aligned with Miami Lakes’ values. Instead, members are being pushed aside, disrespected, and ignored. Flexibility and access for members must improve, and Ricky’s condescending, hostile conduct must stop immediately.

The Club has a choice: restore the integrity and community it once stood for, or continue down a path where long-term members no longer see value in staying.

Coach Ricky is an excellent tennis coach with long-time experience both as a player and as a coach. He is disciplined, very knowledgeable, and always patient. He truly knows what he’s doing, and thanks to his guidance my daughter has greatly improved her skills. I also take lessons with him, and he has shown genuine care for my progress as well. I really appreciate how he emphasizes teamwork and builds confidence on and off the court. Highly recommend!

I’ve been around tennis my whole life — played in high school, competed in USTA — and I’ve never seen the culture at MLAC this bad. Ricky just isn’t nice, polite, or welcoming, and the atmosphere has completely changed under his leadership. I’ve tried hard to be respectful and to make this work, but it’s too much. What we need is an online booking system so he can’t arbitrarily take away courts and hand them out to his friends.

★ 1

As a member who exclusively uses the facilities for tennis playing on the clay courts (with occasional pickleball playing at the basketball courts), it would be nice to improve the negative culture quickly engulfing MLAC surrounding tennis, mainly with lead coach Ricky, his lack of professionalism and manners.

From unnecessary difficulties with court reservations, unsupervised kids coaching, lack of proper shoe usage on clay courts by said kids, for example. The lack of addressing issues with Ricky by management, which honestly just continues to empower him to treat us members in a manner that to the blind eye seems vindictive.

This is a small and close community for this issues to b continue. Something must be done.

★ 1

Besides making the overall ambience very tense, Ricky, has spoken disrespectfully to members, sometimes right in front of children, which is unacceptable. Friends of mine who considered joining with us have decided not to, some have quit, others feel pushed out, and the whole environment has turned negative.

I used to love coming here, but things have really decayed. It was a place for my husband and I to bring friends and enjoy a day of either tennis or pickleball. Unfortunately, the tennis coach has not added value to our experiences.

This isn’t the community it used to be. Management needs to step up and bring back fairness, respect, and a safe culture for everyone. This is not beyond repair, but it needs to be addressed.

I joined after a friend’s invite and was welcomed by the players, but from day one had negative encounters with Coach Ricky. A familiar face from Goodlet park where I also played for many years, and not part of the fond memories there.

He’s been dismissive, combative, and even blocked me from a reserved court without realizing it was mine. Despite emailing and calling management months ago, I’ve had no response.

Add to that unsupervised minors, questionable ‘ghost’ court reservations, and reports of missing items, and the atmosphere has turned stressful instead of welcoming. I even joined pickleball just to avoid interactions with him. Something needs to change.

Tennis at this club has unfortunately declined to a level that makes participation frustrating and, at times, concerning. The head coach has created an atmosphere that feels disorganized, and unwelcoming. Rules and decisions are applied inconsistently, leaving players with the impression that fairness is not a priority.
For a place that should promote sportsmanship, community, and respect, the current leadership has fallen far short. I truly hope the club can recognize these issues and take meaningful steps toward better management, accountability, and creating an environment where players of all ages can feel safe, respected, and supported.

★ 1

The quality of the tennis experience has dropped to the point where I am not sure I want to stay. Ricky, the new coach, has created an environment that is confrontational and hostile instead of welcoming. His approach feels arbitrary and vindictive, and the lack of accountability is alarming. Management gives him a free pass. No online booking. Unsupervised minors and the unexplained loss of racquets only add to the unsafe conditions. So weird. Unacceptable.

Source: Google

★ 1

I have watched the decline of the tennis program with growing concern, and at this point I am questioning whether to continue. The situation under Ricky has become increasingly hostile and aggressive, creating an unsafe environment for both players and families. His decisions appear arbitrary, sometimes even vindictive, which leaves many of us uneasy about participating. It is especially troubling that minors are frequently left without supervision, a risk that cannot be ignored. On top of this, racquets have disappeared, and only Ricky seems to know where they are.

Tennis here has slipped badly, and I find myself considering leaving altogether. The environment under Ricky has grown unsafe, aggressive, and unnecessarily confrontational. Players are subjected to arbitrary decisions that feel vindictive instead of fair. What troubles me most is seeing children left unsupervised in this setting, while equipment like racquets vanishes without explanation.

The worst place to plan a sauna day. Every time I decide to go, there is always an issue with the sauna, why clean it in the middle of the day. Last week they were painting, last month they were cleaning, today March 8th they literally closed it with no explanation. The front desk is clueless. If you are reading this please go to a REAL gym. This place has become a JOKE!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to become a member at a CONSISTENT GYM. If they cared about their clients they would do this crap AFTERHOURS, where members are not affected. Best thing about the gym is the location, which is near where I live. In addition the staff members are pleasant and friendly. It is also a great place for tennis playing and lessons. Beyond that, the gym is small, operating hours can leave you standing outside because it closes early on the weekend. It is also more expensive than bigger, more well-known franchises. However, having said that, the people that work there are very kind, and respectful which does make a difference. And although, I would love to see weekend hours extended to 6 PM to allow people time for worship on Sundays and weekend family time and still be able to fit in their workout🙏💪...the gym has a small town charm that makes it appealing ☺️.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE WITH ANTHONY HERNANDEZ, WHO CLAIMS HIMSELF TO BE A MANAGER.
SPOKE TO HIM OVER THE PHONE AFTER HE DENIED ENTRANCE TO MY 17 Y/O SON . I'VE BEEN PAYING MEMBERSHIP FOR HIM FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR. I WAS TOLD WHEN WE SIGNED UP HE MUST BE WITH AN ADULT IN THE WEIGHT ROOM AREA, WHICH I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. THE LAST COUPLE OF TIMES MY SON WAS DENIED ACCESS TO THE CLUB. I EXPLAINED TO HIM THAT I AM PAYING FOR HIM FOR A VERY LONG TIME AND THEY NEVER TOLD ME HE CANT ACCESS THE CARDIO AREA OR OTHER FACILITIES. I normally don’t write reviews. However, this review needs to be brought to attention because although the gym is very nice and it offers different classes and it’s always clean the worst part of this gym is the front desk clerks that work there every day I come in, not only I’m not greeted. I’m not even greeted goodbye. They are too busy among each other each other, looking at their phones, talking nonsense And not paying attention who is coming in or out of the gym/ This is major security measure in my eyes because anybody can walk in and they won’t even bother to say anything Of who they are, or if they’re a member, I’ve gone there for months on end not once ever scanned nor Ben acknowledge. I’ve gone during the day on the weekends and they’re too busy folding towels not paying attention of who’s coming in out. I’m at asking them of the front desk to be overly friendly but just acknowledge people when they come in and out many times I’ve come my girlfriend we say thank you have a nice night and they don’t say anything back so like I said gym Is really nice and clean, but the staff should be replaced with people that have certain levels of respect or Customer Service skills

It's nearly impossible to play basketball here since their indoor court is always packed. Whether it's little league, cheerleading, badminton, or basketball tournaments and practices for kids, the court is constantly in use. If you don't have a job, your best chance is to use it very early in the morning or at 12 pm. They also have outdoor basketball courts, but those are primarily used for kids' basketball practices too. It's frustrating that the only available time to use the court is an hour before the gym closes, if you're lucky."

My husband and I joined MLAC soon after we moved to Miami Lakes. We were excited to have accessible tennis courts near us but we were in for so much more. As an avid league tennis player, I soon booked private lessons with Ricky. He is amazing. Most coaches don’t bother trying to change your technique when you’re an amateur player. Ricky slowly did, worked on my weaknesses and has elevated my game where I get compliments on my form. I highly recommend him for players of all levels. Courts have gotten the care they needed and now are in great shape! We also take semi private training sessions with Ricky, fitness trainer on the second floor. He is very knowledgeable and caring. He focuses on exercises that will help us avoid injury and strengthen our body. We love him. Staff at desk is mostly nice (very few don’t even make eye contact but no biggie). They offer fresh towels daily and they do a good job keeping the place clean. I’ve used the pool and gone to the restaurant. Nothing bad to say since I can apply my member discount. We love MLAC and it makes living in Miami Lakes so much better!

This club has a nice footprint and a lot of nice features for avid tennis players. 6 clay courts and one with Stadium seating as well as 3 hard courts on the other side of the building. They also offer indoor PickleBall on the basketball courts with temporary nets. The tennis club needs a few million in renovations. I’d convert the hard courts into PickleBall as well and a few Padel courts.
Also plenty of parking in the lot in the heart of downtown Miami Lakes as well as full fitness center and services.

This review is only for basketball league. Cant speak for the rest. The refs hinder the developement of the kids by calling too many fouls that are not fouls. Kids are not allowed to play defense the correct way, which will be shoking for them when they actually try a play for school or travel. What is sad, is that the league actually has some good kids, which I see no need to protect them like they are doing. I spoke to the director and hopefully she fixes this issue, but i dont see
myself returning if this is the way they operate.

Shulas’s has become the Miami Lakes Athletic Club. Went today hoping for a Whirlpool and Steam, but the remodeling is not ready. The Gym floor replete with
the latest in Exercise equipment! Excellent hotel and restaurant. Parking. Disabled Parking. Steps to charming "Main Street" in Miami Lakes (shops, restaurants, movie theaters) I retired the ⭐️ and quit this Gym because they removed the VERY IMPORTANT whirlpool and failed to advise me in all the times I called.

I am super happy with this Athletic Club! Let's start by the staff; everyone is friendly and helpful making you feel very welcomed. The tennis staff are amazing, energetic and cheerful with the kids and also with the adults who play there (including myself) *Coach Ricardo & Coach Matias*. Even though they do maintain the establishment very well kept I do see all the updates they are making in the building. If you are looking to join a full complete Athletic Club this is an amazing one to be in.

Both my husband and I have membership at this gym and our daughter goes to the Scooby Doo tennis class here. This gym has very good infrastructure and is very clean with friendly and helpful staff. It gives you the feeling of a big family. It feels like going home when you enter this gym, safe and welcomed. Both my personal trainer Ricky, and the youth tennis coach, another Ricky, are professional, easygoing and just simply great people!

I don't have a membership here but I have visited many times for the many sports related activities, including kids basketball. This Club has it all, from weights to tennis to training. I love the area even though it sometimes gets congested closer to the Palmetto. This facility is in the heart of Miami Lakes, close to many dining and entertainment options too.

The facility is decent and offers a large variety of different things. The cons of this place are 1) the equipment for weight lifting isn’t in the best shape. 2) THE HOURS. Only open till 9 on Friday, till 5 on Saturday, and till 3 on Sunday is ridiculous. With my schedule, and I’m sure like others, closing that early on weekends is a killer and defeats the purpose of being a member here. If a Crunch Fitness was built in Miami Lakes, it would be bad news bears for the M.L.A.C.

I've been coming to this gym for more than 10 years with a hiatus during the time Andrea was not teaching here. I returned when she did because there is no one I trust more to work out with. The pilates is incredible - my body feels so much better when I do this class after a day in front of the computer. Her spinning classes are intense and always motivated. Andrea is intense and inspiring - she does the work with you and ALWAYS has her eye on her students to ensure a safe experience. I really like this gym. It's always clean and the people are very nice.

The reason for joining is Andrea’s classes. Whether Pilates, Barre, spinning, and more, this instructor will provide an intense and safe workout. The classes are always different and effective.

This place has no idea how to maintain clay tennis courts. Every time I go to play there the courts are extremely dry. If there’s any sort of breeze at all, you get a face full of dust and dirt. The courts are so uneven that the ball consistently has a bad or awkward bounce. There’s no predicting where the ball will go. Cleaning the lines is pointless as they will be covered in dust within minutes of play and you won’t be able to see them again.
The first time I ever went here, years ago, I went in to speak to the front desk, as I could not believe that we were expected to play a USTA match on courts in this condition. I asked who was in charge of maintaining the courts. The man behind the counter said he was. I told him that the court were too dry and it was windy and we couldn’t see or play like that. He responded that it was MY responsibility to wet the courts!?! I couldn’t believe it. I said “Didn’t you just say that YOU’RE responsible for maintaining the courts? I just PAID you to play on these court! Why the hell would I be responsible for wetting them?” He changed his tune after that. But the courts are always in poor condition when I come, so clearly no one is actually taking care of them properly. I hate having to have matches here.

While this gym has a clean facility and is overall a decent place to workout the treatment ive recieved these past few weeks on multiple occasions is the reason why im writing this review.

1. I was forced to pay for my friend who was coming with me to workout even though i watched literally 3 groups of people in front of
me get let in with no payment at all. All of these groups of people were of a "different" skin tone than me and my friend. I said fine, maybe there was a reason even though it seemed like they knew the front desk people.

2. I was trying to go outside on the basketball courts to relax and shoot around a bit when i was approached by and older man who worked at the gym. The time was 6:45 pm. He told me i needed to be off the court by 7:30 or else I'd "scare" the women coming down to use the court after their fitness class and they wouldn't come on the court. I brushed this off, put my stuff down and started to use the court. At 7 he comes and says i stayed my welcome and i need to get off the court even though he just old me i was ok to be there until 7:30.

Because of this, i just simply cant recommend this gym. I pay a membership here like everyone else and should be allowed to use the facilities up to when there is an organized class.

Update: Changing score from one star to three. The gym recently bought brand-new, good-quality barbells.

Don't bother coming here unless you're fine with defective, unsafe equipment. Nearly all the barbells are bent and rusty. The squat racks (of which there used to be four until two of them magically disappeared), adjustable benches, boxing equipment and deadlift platforms are in a constant state of disrepair. A friend of mine sat on a bench and almost injured herself when the seat came off. One of the squat racks wobbles laterally when re-racking the barbell. One of the platforms has large gaps where a person's foot can easily get caught. The management has known this for at least a year but has done nothing about it. They obviously don't care if someone gets injured.

Today Patricia filled in for our regular Zumba instructor, Georgina who is on a well deserved vacation. What an amazing instructor! Class participants clapped and hooted after her routines and many congratulated her after the class. I was sad to hear that her other class commitments outside of Shula’s prevent her from subbing more often.😔 If her situation changes, Shula’s needs to snatch her up in a flash! Totalmente “se la comió!”

This club is a great place to practice badminton. The level of the game is from beginners to professionals. In the hall there are four courts, in the main play doubles and mixed, at the end of the coaching you can play singles. Training sessions are held three times a week: Tuesday 19:30 - 21:45, Thursday 19:30 - 21:45, Sunday 8:00 - 14:45. There are changes in the schedule, so it is better to call the club before visiting. I recommend this club for all badminton fans 🏸 👍
