It’s a fun golf course! However, watch out if you’re nearing night time. The guy that managed the carts after dark was super rude to me and my partner. Other carts were allowed to bring the cart to their car but we weren’t and when we asked to get our score card not even a minute later; he told us “buddy I threw it away” in a very condescending manner.

I live in Augusta and I’ve been playing Forest Hills for years. The “Best Course in Augusta” is an overstatement. The course used to be stunning, but the quality and maintenance of the course and the staff has been deteriorating over the years. Now, in 2025, at an all time low. I’m here everyday and I can tell how unprofessional and untrained some of the assistant pros are. I still have a soft spot in my heart for this course and if they could clean up their image it would be 100% more enjoyable to play. I now feel uncomfortable and not inclined to return to the course.

Review of Forest Hills Golf Club – Augusta, Georgia

Forest Hills Golf Club is a true gem in Augusta. From the moment you arrive, you can feel the hospitality—everyone from the management to the membership and even the attendants are incredibly friendly. There’s just a great energy in the building, like you’re part of a welcoming golf family.

The cart paths are in excellent shape, and I have to say—these carts are next-level. I normally hate GPS carts, but I broke my own rule here. That’s how smooth, clean, and high-tech they were. Absolute game-changer.

Even though the greens were aerated during our visit, they were still rolling nicely. You can tell the grounds crew takes pride in keeping the course in great shape. The views across the course are stunning—hard to believe there’s anything more beautiful, but it does make you wonder what Augusta National must look like if this place is any indication.

Inside, the service was just as impressive. The waitstaff was attentive, kind, and eager to help. It’s the little things that elevate an experience, and Forest Hills nails all the details.

Home to the Augusta State University golf team—two-time national champions—you even get to see their dorms on the property, which adds a touch of prestige to the whole place.

Overall, this course is remarkable. Great people, great conditions, and a great atmosphere. I’ll definitely be back.

I couldn't believe how hard they have worked to recoup from Helene. Greens were great. Most tee boxes were. They did put our tees beside the actual tee box. (Unlevel and unnecessary) Definitely a great value and I will be back. Thank you for a great day FHGC.

This is a Donald Ross design that they are struggling to get the greens to behave. If the greens were better, 5 stars all the way. I loved the course, but the greens weren’t good when I played it. Hopefully they have fixed that.

The clubhouse sandwich at the turn was fantastic and I’d play here again just for the sandwich.

I played Forest Hills on February 28th and was charged $85, which I felt was not justified given the overall experience. While the course conditions were decent, I strongly advise against playing there due to poor pace-of-play caused by course management. The course prioritizes the Augusta State golf team, and if they take 4.5 to 5 hours to complete their round, other players are left waiting with no intervention from the course staff.

Despite spending over $90 between golf and range balls, I received no support from the clubhouse when the college players caused significant delays. The staff simply responded with “sorry” rather than addressing the issue. The refusal of the college players to allow faster groups to play through only added to the frustration. Given these factors, I was highly disappointed with the experience and have decided not to return, recommending others to avoid the course as well due to its high price and poor management of pace of play.

On a side note: They throw down green paint to make the course "look" better. Woodside, Reserve Club, Palmetto, and other top tier courses do not use paint, and their greens/fairways look awesome.. Do Better Forest Hills!

Greens are absolutely horrible. They look nice but are rock hard even after a hard rain. Anywhere around the greens the grass is basically like hitting in a mud pit. Definitely not worth the price.

Greens were in horrible shape, water points were empty. This place isn’t worth 70 something dollars. Rather just have my money back and play Eisenhower lakes where I can walk for 26 bucks and they have 27 holes.

Played today. Loved the traditional course layout. Unfortunately serious issue with about half the greens. Some greens were worse than others, but the worst ones were unputtable, unless you moved your ball to other side of green. Hopefully they will get greens back soon
We had actually called proshop the day before, and they said greens were fine, but they weren't.

I play here throughout the year when I am in town and it looks like they have made a lot of improvements. Another user commented on the greens. I played here the other day, couple days after the masters, and the greens weren’t as bad as he made them out to be. Some were worse than others, but the pin locations were generally away from these spots, but they are still working on them. The fairways were fantastic. You can tell they have been working hard on it and it is looking good.

Took some clients out to play a round while we were down at the Masters. Goes without saying we paid inflated greens fees. When we arrived and checked in, the Pro Shop told us there were a couple of greens not in great shape. That was a complete misrepresentation of how poor the conditions were. I would say 80% of the greens were damaged and burnt out making it where you couldn't putt. Most of the tee boxes were also burned out and under repair. I really can't believe they charged $250 per golfer for the poor conditions of that course. Play this course at your own risk.

Been playing Forest Hills for over 30 years (score hasn’t improved much), but wanted to give credit where credit is due. Played Sunday and the course looked and played spectacular. From a glance off any tee, the course has the look and feel of Augusta and Palmetto. Of course, it makes perfect sense knowing it was a Ross inspired design.

Love Augusta University and its home course. Go Jags!!

1. Stuck behind a 5-some and took 5.5 hours to play the round. Why was a 5-some allowed?..
2. CPO on a dry day following a day of rain but the fairways were dry and solid. No reason to be CPO.
3. Greens in horrible condition. We should have been informed before booking.
4. Not worth the $47 w. Sr. Discount.
We were 2 Foursomes.and doubt we will return anytime soon - we were all disappointed especially compared to good past experiences.

Great course. Staff and customer service horrible. Out on the (hole 8)course, beverage cart come by. I order 3 beers she says she takes credit cards, but has to go run it at the clubhouse. She said if she does not make it back out, my card will be at the snack shop. Finish my round, place is locked up tight. Guy collecting carts calls someone with the keys who gives me attitude stating he'd have to drive 30 minutes back to open the building so he could get my credit card. Trying to be nice, I told him I didn't want him to have to do that, so the next day drove 15 miles one way to get the card. No sorry, no nothing. Didn't even confirm I was who I was with ID. Will bring this up with the University.

Augusta, GA is certainly a well-known golf destination. Outside of that course that very few will ever have the privilege of playing, there are a number of great local tracks that the public does have access to. One of these courses is Forest Hills Golf Course, an 18-hole Donald Ross masterpiece that has been repeatedly named “Best Public Course” by Augusta Magazine.

Ross designed Forest Hills in 1926, and then in 1984, the Arnold Palmer Company redesigned several holes to accommodate construction of the Augusta University Athletic Complex. In 2004, the course was restored to its original design and has remained that way ever since.

The golf course at Forest Hills features a variety of holes, some straight, some turn to the right and others dogleg to the left. Water only comes into play on the two par 3 holes on the back, other than that, there’s no wet stuff to worry about. The greens are not too fast and roll true.

Memorable Holes (All Yardage from the White Tees)
Number 1: Par 4, 383 yards. This gently winding dogleg right that plays downhill and features a variety of trees on the right side including dogwoods, magnolias and pines and a sparse pine forest on the left. The green is fronted by a single bunker that guards the front right side of the green and slopes gently from back to front with a lot of undulation. A middle pin position can lead to low scores so be sure to check the pin sheet.

Number 11: Par 5, 535 yards. This monster par 5 plays straight downhill, with fairway bunker left and trees to the right off the tee. Number 11 also features some unique grass mounding in the middle and right side of the fairway that needs to be avoided on your layup shot. Two fairway bunkers sit about 40 yards short of the green, awaiting any short approach shots. The green is oddly shaped and has a lot of undulation in it. Par is good.

Number 16: Par 3, 159 yards. For a hole that’s pretty straight forward, this one can give you fits. Number 16 plays over water and slightly uphill, perhaps a half to one club longer than normal. Short is better than long as there is plenty of room in front of the green, which is flanked by bunkers on both sides. Anything over the green makes for a tough up and down.

Number 18: Par 4, 286 yards. It’s not often that a golf course ends with the easiest hole on the course but that is exactly what Forest Hills does. Your toughest chore on this hole is to keep your tee shot in the fairway as it can get very narrow in the landing area. A good tee shot will leave a short pitch to a large green with bunkers front, left and right and trees long.

Forest Hills offers a good time for golfers of all ages and abilities with wide open fairways, magnificent trees and putting greens that roll fair and true. From the back tees, Forest Hills will challenge even the best of players and the five sets of tees make it playable for any level of golfer. With all of the pine trees, rolling terrain and not much water, Forest Hills has a Carolina Sandhills feel to it.

Before your round, be sure to visit the driving range, where you can hit every club in the bag prior to your round. There’s also a bar and grill to celebrate in after your round as well as banquet facilities.

If you live in the Augusta area or plan on spending a good deal of time there, Forest Hills offers eight different membership plans, so there is something to suite everyone. All memberships include green fees, complimentary usage of the driving range and a two-week advance booking on tee times. They also receive a 15% discount on merchandise other than golf clubs, golf balls, and Augusta University Jaguars gear.

If you plan on being in the area that magical Master weekend in April, be sure to book your round early at Forest Hills. They are running some great Masters Week Packages which include greens fees, cart, range balls and a boxed lunch, all for one low price. You’ll also see some great specials on pro shop merchandise.

Every time I have tried to use it, the course is always booked till 2 or 3 in the afternoon, even on weekends. So I will just let this free round pass go and take my business elsewhere.
