My 8-year-old (Autistic) son just started lessons at The Martial Arts Center. The instructors support all students alike and even recognize he needs different support. They do not treat him any different.
He is so proud to have something he can be a part of.

As someone always striving to be in great shape, The Martial Arts Center (TMAC) was exactly what I needed to meet that life goal. Shihan Mike's training toughened me up both physically and mentally. My TMAC journey began with me sitting on the 'parents' bench, watching my two daughters train in the children's classes. Once our oldest daughter entered the adult classes, I joined in on the training fun. Our dad and daughter's time at the Dojo, under Shihan Mike's extraordinary martial arts skills, knowledge, and teaching ability, was some of the most rewarding time spent with my two daughters. I met some great friends and was in the best shape of my life. Cheers to getting in better shape, creating lifelong friendships, and spending valuable time with our children/young adults.

I have been a student at the dojo since I was 8 years old and stayed with it until high school. Karate has always been a comfort knowing that I can protect myself, especially now that I’m away from home and at college. I recommend studying with Shihan Mike over any other location by far. Shihan has been a life-long mentor, a friend, and my teacher and I wouldn’t trade my experience here for anything.

There are some great moments that happen here with the kids who go here. They find a confidence in their physical person during a time their body is still awkward for them. The teaching and coaching straddles martial arts and how to be a great human being. I am so glad that my children attend.

This is one of the best Martial Arts Centers that I have ever trained. Coming from Puerto Rico many years ago and training in martial arts there as well as in other places here, I consider Shihan Mike Hernandez, one of the best teachers that I have ever had. He is a 7th dan in both Okinawa Karate and Japanese Jujitsu. Shihan Hernandez is, without any doubt, a remarkable practitioner and person. The ability to teach, understand, and convey the message to the students is second to none.
Additionally, the dojo has Ms. Renee Baskerville, as the office manager. She is an excellent, wonderful and attentive person, knowing everyone’s names.
Finally, the dojo has Dr. Navdeep Jhita, the school Sensei. She is third degree black belt (Sandan) in both Okinawa Karate and Japanese Jujitsu. She is an outstanding instructor, a wonderful practitioner and a kind and compassionate person.
The dojo has also several black (shodan), brown and a large body of purple, green, blue, yellow and white belt students.
The Martial Arts Center has also a very large group of children learning daily. Shihan Mike Hernandez and his team are very highly recommended.

Shihan Mike is an exceptional karate instructor who brings knowledge, discipline, and enthusiasm to every class. His teaching style is both engaging and effective, making it easy for students of all ages to learn and improve. He is patient with beginners while also challenging more advanced students to reach their full potential. Beyond just karate techniques, he instills confidence, respect, and perseverance in his students. If you’re looking for a skilled and dedicated instructor who truly cares about his students’ progress, I highly recommend Shihan Mike!

The Martial Arts Center is great in all honesty. It has a team that will make sure every student has what they need and a teacher that's not only extremely knowledgeable, but caring, charismatic and respectful for all children and adults, my time assisting there was awesome and wish I could be back. Martial Arts not only bring a sense of security and teamwork, but also it gives a path of respectfulness, discipline and (over what some people might perceive) passiveness . I cannot recommend any other Dojo more than this one!

A Wonderful Karate Dojo - Highly Recommended!
My daughter has been learning karate at this dojo for the past 3 years, and the experience has been nothing short of amazing. Under the guidance of Shihan, not only is she mastering the art of karate, but she is also learning valuable virtues of being a good citizen and human being. The emphasis on character building, discipline, and respect has truly transformed her. We've seen remarkable growth in her confidence and courage, both on and off the mat.
This dojo is not just about physical training; it nurtures the mind and spirit as well. It's a holistic approach that I highly recommend for any child looking to build strength, character, and resilience. If you're looking for a place where your child can grow into a confident and well-rounded individual, this dojo is the perfect choice.

Fantastic Martial Arts School – Highly Recommended!
I trained at The Martial Arts Center for years, and it has been an incredible experience. The owner and instructor, Shihan Mike, today is more like family. I started training under Shihan Mike twenty eight years ago and still pushing forward. Life may have taken me away for a while—between school, kids, and moving further away—but my family and I still stay connected with Shihan Mike and continue to train. I even earned my second-degree black belt under his guidance, as well, as my Husband.
Not only did I train under Shihan Mike, but I also became a certified personal trainer and taught kickboxing classes at the school. Shihan Mike is extremely skilled and knowledgeable. He has a fantastic reputation and is wonderful with both kids and adults. He makes every class fun, engaging, and full of energy. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, young or old, you'll receive top-notch instruction that will help you build confidence, discipline, and resilience both on and off the mat.
The dojo is always clean, safe, and welcoming. Parents and family members are encouraged to watch or even participate in classes. It’s a great environment for learning and personal growth.
Shihan Mike is always thinking of ways to help out his students and the community. The school holds special events like seminars- (introducing various styles of the art, broadening perspective, and skill set) from other instructors that Shihan Mike trains with or his teacher. He has/had a kick-a-thon to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, blood drives, and CPR training sessions. There are other activities that he offers for the kids and families as well. Kids love it!
If you're looking for a place to train, grow, and build character, this is it. The Martial Arts Center Tucker/Atlanta Karate and Jiu-Jitsu is a place where you’ll make lifelong connections and develop not just martial arts skills, but personal strength.
Shihan Mike and his dojo will always hold a special place in my heart. I Highly recommend!

I am so pleased with the experience of our son. He struggles with focus and impulse control, and his karate lessons are helping with both. I am proud of him, and he is proud of himself. I love that the focus is not solely on karate skills, but also on character. To advance belts, students need to not only master skills but also demonstrate good behavior at home, school, and the Dojo. I could go on and on. The Martial Arts Center has been a gift. My son has been taking karate with Shihan Mike for almost a year. I am so happy we chose The Martial Arts Center as our dojo. Training here is no joke. Shihan Mike expects the kids to be prepared for class and participate fully, show respect, be committed to attending classes, be their best at home and school, and more. But he loves these kids, is always happy to see them, and treats them with respect. He makes them earn their promotions, instead of just giving them away easily. But when your child is promoted, they have a huge sense of accomplishment because they know they worked hard and earned it. He is an awesome role model for all kids, but especially boys.
If you are looking for an amazing martial arts experience, look no further.

The Martial Arts Center is well run and students enjoy attending classes. Shihan Michael and his staff are kind and understanding. They will do their best to accommodate schedules and work with you to meet your needs as best as their schedule allows. He is very kind to his students and meets them where they are at to meet their needs. Class size can range from a small group of less than 10 to as many as more than 15 depending upon what belt class you're in. Dojo hours are posted and updated often so that the students are able to know when they are able to test for the next belt. As classes are openly viewed for parents, they are fun and very active for the students.
Students are easily seen and can be gently corrected to improve their 'move'. He has very reasonable expectations and is willing to come alongside parents to help the child be responsible in the community outside of the dojo. I felt comfortable asking questions and asking for help from Shihan Michael when my children were struggling with motivation and explaining the rationale to many of the skills that were taught to them. With the monthly fee charged, it is nice that students are allowed to come as often as they want with a commitment of at least twice a week to ensure consistency. Students must commit to practice consistently outside the dojo or they will struggle often in class trying to remember their "moves". They are also expected to keep up with a notebook of questions to answer so they can always refer to important ideas, vocabulary, and knowledge as a karate student at each belt level. Shihan will ask students to try simple challenges to be a helper at home to mom and dad. He has students earn stripes and has expectations to ensure responsibility and self-confidence. These expectations are not unreasonable as he wants his students to be present and future positive, contributing members of society who are helpful, courteous, respectful, responsible, and self-confident. He praises students when it is deserved and gives them encouraging words when times are needed to push them to be better in a positive way. He also will speak truth to the student and even to the parents when needed in a loving manner. I am very grateful that our time at The Martial Arts Center was a good one, but due to other commitments and family expectations, our season there has come to an end. I would highly recommend Tucker Martial Arts for its values, commitment, and the instilling of life and martial arts skills in students.

Such dojo and highly skilled ethical, & moral people rarity nowadays. My 13 yo daughter has been at the Martial Arts Center for the past 3 years. I’ve been very happy and would absolutely recommend this karate studio. Shihan Mike is top notch and provides a great environment and experience for his students. In addition to the core skills of karate, he provides valuable ongoing life coaching to kids. This is critical. He’s also done a phenomenal job with offering COVID-friendly (in-person and virtual) classes. He never missed a beat and during the months when his facility was closed for in-person classes this past spring, he diligently provided two online workouts and two live sessions for each one of his classes every single week. When he re-opened on June 1, he implemented very stringent new protocol to keep everyone safe (students and parents signed a detailed 3-page contract). His studio was built a couple of years ago and it’s a beautiful, clean, spacious facility. I highly recommend Shihan Mike!

My son started this year and loves Shihan Mike and his dojo! He wants to go to class every day. This is a clean, positive place where one does not only learn karate, but also important life lessons. We look forward to my son attending TMAC for years to come and experiencing growth in the process.

My daughter, who is 6, has so enjoyed being a part of The Martial Arts Center! Since day one, she is excited to go to class. Shihan Mike is great with the kids, he teaches them responsibility in ways that gives them confidence and makes them feel good about themselves. He expects respect & still makes it fun for everyone. He instills the importance of character in his teachings. He helps the kids stay focused, but understand they are still kids. It’s been a very important part of her every week & we look forward to growing with TMAC!

My son has been practicing karate at TMAC for over 6 years, and it continues to be a great experience for him. In addition to the fitness and karate skills, Shihan Mike instills ongoing character building into his teaching style every class to ensure that all of his younger students develop into well-rounded young adults. He truly cares about all of his students and their successes.

Great experience so far. My daughter has been taking classes here since August. She’s looks forward to coming to class each week. She’s gotten stronger and more flexible. She’s also learned a few self defense moves already.
Shihan Mike, the instructor, keeps the kids focused and also makes it fun for them each class. He’s direct and ensures each child stays respectable during class so all ages can learn distraction free.

-Mike Shihan is an amazing instructor! My two kids started karate with Shihan 3.5 years ago. He has been a coach, a leader, a teacher and a role model for my kids for all these years. I personally learned a lot as a parent from Mike Shihan and often seek and get some parenting advice and wisdom from him.
-We love our new dojo - it's a new facility that is modern, sophisticated, decorated with love and creativity. Plenty of parking, shops/malls are around to run your errands.
-Can't recommend a better environment for girls and boys to grow physically and spiritually!!!

My son has been training with Shihan Mike at The Martial Arts Center for years. He started with kids classes and now is in high school and trains with the adults. The dojo has been a welcomed second home for him. Shihan not only cares about these students and their karate training, but he cares about them as individuals and is always excited and encouraging when acknowledging their school and outside extracurricular achievements! Thank you, Shihan!!!

We just started at the Dojo about 2 weeks ago and I am already seeing a change in my son's behavior! Mike is so awesome with the kids, he does warm-up exercises before, which is very important to avoid injuries. He also does a fun game at the end of class, but most importantly Mike has a way of building confidence and comradery in his students. He is a great mentor & role model and I am proud my son is learning from him. The dojo is clean and orderly and smells good every time we are there. Thank You Mike you are truly gifted at what you do!

Excellent school. As a parent himself, Shihan Mike understands how to make classes serious enough to facilitate learning, yet fun enough to keep the kids entertained. At first, I wasn't sure how my daughter would handle 45 minutes of focused physical activity, especially one with kicks and punches. But she's loving it. And the fact that, as part of the promises she made to Shihan Mike when she joined the school, she now makes her bed in the morning is an unexpected extra bonus.

My son and I have been training at this dojo since 2013. He started when he was eight and is now nearly fourteen. He has literally grown up in the martial arts. It strengthened him physically, mentally and emotionally. Because of his hard work and progress, he is now given the privilege of helping teach classes and develop his leadership abilities.
For my own part, I've always struggled with fitness. The Martial Arts Center is a community where I am encouraged to start from where I am, but always push forward. I can count on Shihan Michael Hernandez and my fellow classmates to support me in my own grown in the martial arts.

Shihan Mike is outstanding! The martial art he is teaching (Okinawen SHURI- RYU) is not simply a sport, but it is a way of life (discipline; respect of the self and the other; hard work; trust; self confidence and fun). This is a great experience for my daughter who is almost 5. We are very lucky to find such an amazing and clean dojo with such a skillful instructor

I have been training with TMAC for the last year and a half in both Karate and Jujitsu! I came back to train (in martial arts) at a low moment in my life. It has been a wonderful experience learning and gaining confidence from Shihan Mike! He is a wonderful teacher that is always willing to help his students understand the deeper meaning of the Shuri-ryu and Shintoyoshin-kai arts. It is hard to find a Dojo with solid training and lots of tradition. TMAC has all that and more! I highly recommend Shihan Mike, his teaching and TMAC!! We even have a new beautiful location in Tucker! Come join us!

I have been involved in martial arts most of my life. I have previously taught for many years and there is nobody else I would rather work with my son than Shihan Mike.
Go watch any class and you will see the difference. This is NOT a belt factory. Each child earns each belt. They come away with extreme pride in their accomplishments.
While I very much respect Okinawan Shuri-ryu, the specifics of the art are not important when it comes to children. It is all about confidence building, self discipline and respect for each other, parents and other adults which Is paramount in the training. This the core focus for Shihan Mike in the kid’s program and I have seen my son make great leap in all of these.
My son, loves it as well, looking forward to getting back into it after vacations. This has truly become a main thread in his fabric.
Thank you Shihan!

Shihan Mike is a wonderful teacher and the Dojo is very neat and peaceful place. He sees his students as a family and he really cares about them.He has a gift with kids, he is consistent, challenging, and wants his students to work hard and earn their belt. He is very strict but kind, and he see everybody with the same eye. He pointed out the important manners that any kid should have throughout his lesson. My 9 yrs old boy loves him so much. Shihan Michael Hernandez has been teaching our three children, ages 8, 6, and 4, Martial Arts (Okinawan Shuri-Ryu). He is an excellent teacher. Appropriately challenging, but understanding of the limitations of age and understanding. He does not simply hand out belts/promotions; the children earn them. He cares about the kids and their development inside and outside the dojo, frequently reinforcing the good values parents try to teach their kids. We have seen a growth of confidence in our kids since they have been working on Martial Arts with Shihan Mike. It is a good, safe place for folks of all ages to learn martial arts from a highly qualified professional with training in multiple different disciplines.
Another important feature is the immaculate condition of the dojo, reflecting Shihan Mike's spirit of perfection. It is very clean, does not have the gym "odor", and is well kept. Staff at the facility are also excellent.
We highly recommend TMAC to anyone seeking to learn martial arts.

OH MY! I can't say enough about the program Shihan Mike Hernandez has developed. He is the BEST! If you're inclined to think his program is just about karate, I'm afraid you're mistaken.
When you "turn over" your child to Mike, please know he will teach them respect, manners, loving kindness, strength, inner power, friendship, graciousness, sportsmanship, teamwork, anything else good that you want your child to know or be ... and he does it all with humor and a firm hand.
You can't go wrong with Mike Hernandez and The Martial Arts Center!!

It's a well rounded, holistic program that I can't recommend enough.

Immediately, Shihan Mike treats his students as family. I am 29 years old and joined a few weeks ago. Totally out of shape, the classes were challenging for me. While I was pushed to work hard, I was given a clear, personalized path to work at a pace that worked for where I was starting from.
The culture he has created of love, care, respect and hard work in the dojo is palpable. The curriculum and belt advancement/testing requirements are laid out extremely clearly to allow one to work at their own pace.
His humility is also impressive. For almost 2 months I was completely unaware of his background and accomplishments until I read about them elsewhere.
This is definitely an awesome choice for adults and children alike.

Tmac isn't just great for kids but adults too! I love their adult jiu jitsu class, which has a great mix of age groups, gender, and skill level. Compared to other adult JJ programs in the area, TMAC has more one on one instructor to student attention. It also boasts a good mix of skills- rather than some achools that just have you roll all class with other students, Mike and Laura spend a lot of time teaching technical skills around throws, falls, and ground work while also providing time for rolling.

The Martial Arts Center- Atlanta hosted our son's 8th birthday party, and everyone had a blast. Shihan Mike began the experience by getting to know each and every kid. From that point on he never forgot a single name. Shihan led the kids through a series of exercises, introducing them to the basics of Karate. This was not a let-the-kids-run-wild type of event. Core values like respect and self discipline were gently reinforced throughout the party.
When, at last, it was time for cake, Shihan produced a real (though not especially sharp) samurai sword for our son to cut it. After food and drinks, all the kids cleaned the mats(!) for some fun tag-type games that involved thwacking with pool noodles. Everyone loved it.
If you seek an unusual experience to mark your kid's big day, The Martial Arts Center is just the place. And you'll enjoy the unusual experience of seeing young party guests stand at attention and really learn something – not just about Karate, but about themselves.

Shihan Mike is knowledgeable, fun and patient, but also has high expectations of his students. I've researched quite a bit about sensory processing disorder (after learning that this is what my son has) and ADD/ADHD, as I work with children who have both of these issues, and have heard for some time how karate has helped many of these children. That was the primary reason for seeking out a martial arts program for my son, but I also appreciate the many other lessons and life skills that he can learn from this art. I love to watch how Shihan and Dai Sempai interact with the students, and have learned a lot about how to better my interaction both with my son and with my students by watching them and seeing things from their perspective. They both show such patience with the students but at the same time have high expectations for their performance. Working with students with learning and behavioral issues, I find this is a difficult balance for people to strike, and they seem to do it so effortlessly and so well! We are so grateful we found The Martial Arts Center!

We started our five year old daughter a couple months ago and have been thoroughly impressed. Shihan Mike Hernandez has a great gift with children. He is able to keep a class of up to 12 five to six year olds well disciplined.
He is intuitive to each child's personality, and he's pretty funny. We love that our daughter is able to stay focused through a whole session, and that she gets a good work-out. She is high energy and is definitely tired after her 45 min session.
We also love what they need to memorize ... "Karate begins and ends with courtesy ... There is no excuse for bad manners ... etc."
Overall, we are really pleased and look forward to enrolling our other girls!

Our daughter had a great experience at TMAC. Shihan Mike and Sempai run a tight ship, while instilling confidence and discipline in even very young students. Our child had a great time and learned a great deal about respect, hard work, and the treatment of themselves and others. Key to the experience for a child is that they maintain an environment of fun and seriousness simultaneously, and ingrain the idea of leading by example, without embarrassing or making even a shy child feel uncomfortable at any time.

I began working with Shihan Mike and The Martial Arts Center early in 2013 and could not have had a better experience. I came to The Martial Arts Center based on a recommendation from a friend. With virtually zero martial arts experience and moderate athleticism, I was able to learn and build a foundation in two styles.
Beyond the adult program, I've recommended The Martial Arts Center youth programs to many parents for their children. I've been most impressed with the way Shihan Mike works with people of all ages. I've seen shy kids learn to approach difficult situations such as bullying with confidence. It's amazing the way Shihan Mike makes learning a traditional art very modern and applicable to various real life situations.
Training at The Martial Arts Center can help individuals of all ages, both male and female, achieve their goals of health/fitness, self-defense, confidence and self-discipline. It's a great mix of physical activity and studying martial arts techniques and forms. Not to mention it's a lot of fun!
I can't say enough about the character and professionalism of Shihan Mike and his staff at The Martial Arts Center. I highly recommend The Martial Arts Center no matter what your goals are.

Our son has attended classes at The Martial Arts Center for three and a half years now, and it has become such a positive part of his life. While he is learning many aspects of self-defense and is in tremendous physical condition, what's most important is the part TMAC has played in developing his character and his confidence. The classes are conducted in a nurturing and generous manner, and there are always some fun games and activities thrown in as well. Within this framework though, Shihan Mike and Sempai Laura do expect concentration, perseverance and honest effort on the part of the students. Our son has learned to see the connection between working hard and the good feeling that comes from becoming better at doing something difficult. When he receives a compliment or earns a promotion, he knows he's truly earned it and so it means a great deal to him. For us it's wonderful to see him look forward each week to working on something that is so good for him in so many different ways.

Where to start?! Shihan Mike Hernandez is an amazing teacher--not only in the knowledge of martial arts that he conveys to the students of all ages, but in the life lessons he imparts, as well. He teaches them about personal discipline, positive attitude, setting long term goals, and respect for themselves and others. I love that my son gets a great workout and has learned so much about his body and training, but I think, even more, I love all that he learns about life from Shihan. THAT is the training that really makes a difference. We have been with the dojo for over 4 years and it only becomes more valuable as my son gets older.

I really don't even know where to start. Shihan Mike Hernandez is a phenomenal teacher and his understanding of the subject matter is clearly evident. It is not just his knowledge of the subject matter but how he imparts that knowledge on his students. Since my wife and I are both teachers, we can fully appreciate a person that is a truly gifted teacher.
The classroom management skills that he uses are impecable and he has great rapor with all his students. He clearly cares about his students and goes to great lengths to ensure that they have a firm grasp on the material. When our boys Daniel and Sam joined Karate we had no idea what we were in for. We thought that this would be a good way to build self esteem and discipline within our children. Shihan not only has improved our children's self esteem and discipline but also has given them numerous life lessons on being leaders and good citizens within our community. Dan and Sam, or "Knuckles and Chuckles" as they have been nicknamed have gone to a couple of tournaments. Now both of our kids don't mind performing in front of large crowds. They are extremely excited to be chosen to be on the Exhibition team that will be performing at halftime of the Georgia State Basketball game on December 14th. Our kids are now second degree brown belts and want to continue under the tutelage and guidance of Shihan.
