Walking into this place feels less like fitness and more like punishment. The music? *Absurdly* loud, wildly inappropriate for a gym, and so repetitive it could double as a psychological experiment in endurance. If that doesn’t break you, the loud chatter from people on their phones or yelling across treadmills will.

Forget motivation — this place could make a marathon runner drowsy. The AC is cranked so high I was sweating before even starting my workout, which I guess technically counts as “cardio.”

About 60% of the machines are either *“temporarily out of service”* or permanently occupied by phone-scrolling regulars — basically, gym furniture with a pulse. The remaining functional ones? Good luck. The place is overcrowded at all hours.

The staff? Totally unprofessional, inefficient, and unresponsive — even to the simplest, most resolvable complaints. It’s like they’ve mastered the art of pretending not to notice problems while standing right next to them.

And the parking lot? Utter chaos. You’ll burn more calories hunting for a spot than on their broken treadmills.

As for that famous *“Judgement Free Zone”* slogan — adorable. When half the gym is broken, overcrowded, and blasting hypnotic nap-time music, trust me, you’ll be judging everything.

**Pro tip:** save your money, turn up some white noise at home, jog around a packed parking lot, and boom — you’ve recreated the full Planet Fitness experience, minus the purple walls.

I stopped by and spoke to management about all of this on day one of my membership. I waited over three months for any steps to be taken — and not a single one of my concerns was addressed or even attempted to be resolved. Not one.

When I canceled my monthly membership — more than a month before it was set to expire at the end of the month — I was told it would only be canceled on the 16th of the following month, even though I had already paid through the 30th. In other words, I lost half a month I’d already paid for plus the initiation fee. Will contact BBB to address this abuse!

As someone who hasn’t enrolled in a gym before and found himself insecure trying something new, I cannot recommend this place enough - especially Cam, the resident personal trainer. He very kindly showed me around the gym, shared with me a proposal for a fitness plan, and even demonstrated some exercises to get me started.

As for the gym itself, being someone who simply wants to get fit (versus ridiculously buff), I am grateful that I’ve so far had a welcoming and “low maka maka” experience. Thank you Cam, and thank you to the Planet Fitness Kahala Mall team!

Staff is nice and the gym is clean, but there's some machines (pec fly) that always have 2-3 people waiting to use, and other areas that have multiple machines but I only see get used once in a long while. I wish the changed the amount of machines based on usage, I hate wasting 30 min just to get to a bench or a machine there's only one of.

I now realize I was at this gym when a girl was standing at the front desk crying and distraught over something. Trying not to pry and offer experienced assistance, I politely informed the guy working the front desk that whatever the matter "he should call mall security". She was in that much distress. He replied "don't worry about it". I remember being pissed as a customer wanting to help then, and after watching the news, realized that this guy who got arrested for road rage was also in the gym this particular day. I was there for an hour. No mall security or police showed up. I also now realized that the guy who terrorized her was in the gym. Absolutely nothing done by the front desk or the mall to insure this girls well being. Instead she seemed to be directed by someone to fill out paperwork while crying and in fear. Great job with operating procedures on how to handle this kind of incident. I'm certain they don't have other SOP's as well. Obviously a lack of training. I feel for that girl but at least Hawaiian justice was done while he's sitting in jail. Bad form PF. 👎

You can't beat the proximity, convenience, and new equipment. Other than that, it's really not all that. I've been a 24 Hour Fitness member since time began. I usually go to the Hi Kai location, but in the interest of saving a few $$$ on gas, I thought I'd freeze it for a while and check out this location, again very convenient. After getting an email survey, I made a handful of positive suggestions, but one month later, not even a thank you response. Also, probably most importantly, not the friendliest staff in the world. For the price, I may tolerate it for a while, but we'll see how long. Give it a try, but read the fine print. Yes, people are absolutely correct in that you get locked in and have to go through hoops to cancel. If you're looking for a good workout with trained and courteous staff, the manager out at Hi Kai runs a pretty good ship. You also get a good variety of equipment versus 2/3 cardio equipment and only machines at this location. A lot of it is redundant, and they dont have everything you may need. 24-hour staff is also trained or become trained as well, where the staff here don't seem to be trained or even want to be there. It's a franchise and is a definite reflection on its owner. Research before you give them a try. I'm still contemplating a longer drive and higher gas bill versus staying with thus lication and short hours. That's how bad a taste this location leaves. 3 stars is giving them the benefit of a doubt, hoping they'll improve spacing between racks, disinfectant stations, wash stations in the men's restrooms, having inconsistent sensors, and a few more things.

I love the hydro massage beds, spacious and clean locker rooms, and friendly staff. After surfing, I could stop by for a massage and shower and then didn’t have to drive all the way back across town to home to get ready if I had plans to meet with friends in town. Gets crowded after 3pm and you have to wait for certain equipment to be free, especially the Life Fitness machines with height-adjustable pulleys. The group fitness classes with Neho are great too. He can adjust intensity to your liking. The facilities are clean and well-kept. The location right next to Whole Foods is ideal - I can walk over to the grocery store and get a protein shake or other source of protein right after my workout.

This gym is great! Clean, the machines work, extra space, bathroom isn't falling apart. The two best locations are this one and the Waianae location. The Ala Moana location is just garbage, all the machines are rusted out, and they don't work or adjust. At least the AC isn't dripping on the machines and hitting you on the head like the Ala Moana location. But I'm glad I have two other locations even though they are so far away that are at least clean and work.

I think something was wrong with this treadmill though… I’ve never burned almost 700 calories in only one hour on the treadmill. This place is awesome, free tanning and massage hydronic bed, a lot of space to work out. Showers and restrooms are nice and clean. It feels really good to have this place close to my home. I’m able to workout anytime between 5am till 11pm and it’s very convenient and price is reasonable!

Kahala PF has a great team, including Neo, Ginny, and Shayden, who always provide friendly service. The facility is consistently clean, and even when the crowd indicator is at 4 or higher, there are still plenty of machines and workout areas available.

So I’ve been a member of planet fitness since 2020. I have switched between here in Honolulu and Kona . I recently moved back from Kona joining the gym in Kahala. The other day I went in and (Nayo) I think it was his name asked me if he could take a photo of me after scanning my QR code Something in my head was asking why when he told me my membership had lapsed
I forgot to link my new bank account from moving. Not only did he make me feel like a scumbag but he also mentioned collections ($58) in front of another member who was signing in. Then he continued to say, “ I’ll let you work out today.” so I guess you were are two weeks behind they will take your mug shot as if you’re going to sneak in the club. Thanks for the experience and treating your member of four years like a criminal, I am leaving the gym joining another club altogether. Good job Planet Fitness in Hawaii Kai .

The gym is fine, but the customer service is horrendous.

I signed up on Nov 16, 2024. Because I was staying in Honolulu for only 30 days, I've explicitly asked the employee who signed me up when I should cancel my membership to not be charged for the second month. She said to cancel in person before I leave, by Dec 16.

When I came to cancel on Dec 15, another employee informed me that I'd be charged for the second month because the billing day was on Dec 10. This is not what I was told when signing up, and if I knew I would've cancelled before Dec 10.

I've been calling PF numerous times to ask for a refund because of the misleading information I was given and the fact that I left Honolulu and didn't use the gym after the first month. The manager keeps saying that she needs to talk to her director and will call me tomorrow (she never did). Finally, she gave me a phone number to the director (which always goes to voicemail). It's been a month and nobody cares to fix this situation. Utterly disappointing because I enjoyed my PF experience otherwise but this lack of honesty and respect for customers is the reason to not return ever again.

UPDATE: After posting this review, the PF Social team reached out to me and issued the refund. I hope they also made changes to their customer service process.

A lot of great things at Planet Fitness and a lot of them revolve around the app. You just bring up you upc code to check in. The massage chairs and beds are a huge plus for someone with a sore back. Really helps you loosen up especially for older members that takes a bit more effort. The machines are set up nicely and the hours you can’t beat open 24 hours 5 days of the week. The one thing I don’t like at this location at Ala Moana is almost every machine you go to people get on a machine and stay there for 20 minutes and this seems to be acceptable to the staff . They will do a set and then just sit there. 90% of the time they are resting and recovering to do their next set. There are not enough machines if you’re going to allow members to spend 80% of their use of a station to rest as well as do their workout. There should be signs that say “Do your set then get up until you are ready to use it again for your next set. Let someone else get a set in. At the very least alternate with one other person. This is no lie….you could have 3 other people do a set by the time the person rests their muscles to do their next set. The good thing is the app gives you an idea of how busy the gym is before you decide to go. If it’s 3 bars or more which is nothing expect to wait a ridiculous amount of time because at least 3 out of 4 people on a machine are resting. Why this behavior is allowed is beyond me. I’ve had many different gym memberships and this particular gym is the number one worst one as far as selfish people and wasted time for utilizing the equipment. That being said you can still probably make it work if you are willing to come when app says bars of 2 or less. If you do get up to let someone do a set they believe they then own the station which probably accounts for why this feeds on itself. Put up a sign “No resting on a machine for more than a minute”. That alone would triple the utilization. Some stations such as bench press are almost impossible to get a set in if there are 4 bars or more showing on the app

I joined because we were here on holidays for a month. The staff were accommodating and knowledgeable which made the daunting task smooth and seamless. Misleading rules.
Upon joining my boyfriend and I got 1 bkack card membership. Our first visit we both were given a tour of the facilities and told we can use the "spa" perks. We were able to do so for 7 months often waited on by an employee named Cindy. One day a woman stopped us saying we are violating the membership it was embarrassing and humiliating. Cindy the woman who allowed us services for 7 plus months stood next to the woman from corporate telling me I'm not following the rules. I have since cancelled my membership and will never reccomend this location.

Great gym. Very clean and affordable with friendly staff. Love the massage chairs/beds. During peak hours though it can get very crowded and I often find myself waiting for equipment, but this is an issue with many Oahu gyms.

As for the people who go to this gym, I've had and witnessed a few mildly annoying interactions and there are quite a few teens/kids who crowd around at peak hours.

I think many people forget that this is an inexpensive gym geared toward beginners or people who want to go the gym but aren't super into typical gym culture. If you are looking for a less crowded gym or one with more experienced gym-goers, you're going to have to pay more for it.

I didnt want to have to say but it i have been coming into the kahala planet fitness and showers in the female locker room are getting way out of hand… i have been to many different planet fitness in different states and i have never gone to one that staff neglect it this bad. This Planet Fitness is a pretty good one. All equipment was well maintained. Pretty packed for a late afternoon work out but enough equipment options so you can keep moving and hit the muscle group you want to train. Staff seem pretty friendly. Restrooms / changing areas pretty clean
Except sink areas needed a wipe down of water everywhere. Would definitely come back.

However please note parking is pretty challenging because it’s in the mall setting and there are tons of cars here during rush-hour. May have to park on mall rooftop parking area and walk down or plan to wait a few minutes to see if any cars move you get a spot.

Decent gym size (towards the smaller size) small free weight section and if you’re used to an open gym feel with more free-weight options, this gym is NOT for you, thus it feels crowded. Has been getting even more crowded since it’s March opening. Also, asked front desk employee (a week in advance) if I could pay my yearly fee of ~$50 with my credit card, so I could get my point rewards and she told that yes I could but would have to come a day before the scheduled automatic date which was April 1st. Came in on March 31st and was told that I couldn’t pay it anymore because the fee was already being processed. So not only did they make me drive there in vain (had already worked out outdoors) but the info was provided was misleading. PF used accept credit card payment for the monthly membership, but now even people that never defaulted with their CC before, ARE NOW FORCED to give direct banking-routing numbers to pay their monthly and yearly dues. A very frustrating situation. Bonus: their weekend hours are extremely short, i.e. Kahala Mall closing hours on Saturday are 9 pm, but PF only open ONLY until 7 pm for both weekend days and the gym still busy at the time (hint: prolong your weekend hours!)

I had a disappointing experience at Planet Fitness Gym. The employees there do not seem to enforce the PF Express 30-minute workout zone rules effectively. As a result, every machine is often occupied by individuals who are more interested in texting on their phones than actually working out. This lack of enforcement has led to prolonged waits and frustration for those of us who genuinely want to use the equipment for its intended purpose. It's a shame that the gym's rules are not consistently enforced, making it difficult to have a productive workout session.

I was always hesitant to join a gym because I felt like I didn’t know what I was doing. Planet Fitness, being a “no judgement zone”, is so welcoming. Everyone is so nice and I feel so comfortable that I now workout 7 days a week!

Nice staff, very clean and equipment/machines are always available. If you can plan your workout at the right time you may even have a whole section to yourself. The music helps you workout and the people are all so focused and it’s truly a judgement free place. All shapes and sizes getting fit is a positive environment!

They let teens come for free every summer. I’m not against kids working out and I was a clueless kid too. Show them how to workout, gym etiquette, form, cleaning machines and respect for people’s time. For a quarter of the year this place is filled with roving packs of teens looking at their phones, oblivious to the world around them, wasting paying customers time. It’s basically a summer school/after school program at this point. I’ve seen whole volleyball teams working out and it’s not a huge gym.
Parking is tough but bathrooms are nice and the staff is friendly.

I signed up for the black card membership today. The place is clean and the machines are great. However, such a poor management and service. Very disappointed. I might just cancel the membership.

This is NOT A FREEZONE NON JUDGEMENTAL CLUB that unfortunately IS A COMPLETE LIE…, A horrible place with young kids trying dangerously to workout with no guidance. I have gone to other planet fitness’s and you just don’t see ,it The manager (hard to say how long he’s been in management )makes you feel uncomfortable !!watches you eerily, not a good place not a serious gym at all.,judgemental . he definitely discriminate against people.!! I want out of this gym I have already stated that and yet I was just charged again. What kind of company are you running? I will not suggest that no one go there.. I am a hairdresser in town

100x better then the Hawaii Kai 24hour fitness. Much cleaner. It is a bit smaller but there are less guys just sitting and staring at their weights instead of actually working out.

Regrettably this location has now been overrun by teenagers and younger crowds interested in congregating more than actually working out. Seems like parents are treating it as a daycare. Cant please everyone. Also, there are some repeat customers who have some serious body odor issues (one couple knows exactly who they are) that I can visually see reactions in peoples faces.

Planet Fitness in Kahala mall is very nice plenty of cardio stuff treadmills, elliptical machines, bike, and row machine. There is a handful of free weights. And some weight machines. Not a body builders gym, no bench press or squat racks. Good parking on the mall. I like it though and highly recommend it....

Signed up for a day pass. Got an email to bring along with my id. Get there and front desk wants to take a pic for 'liability purposes'. For a 1 day trial? Why? Wasn't mentioned in email and front desk couldn't produce the policy where it says they require your pic for the day pass. It was 1 hour until closing. Not worth it for a trial. Front desk Ruben Yanis said he was the manager and to call corporate but he doesn't have to show any policy and that he can say anything. If it was a membership sure that's expected. But a day pass? Discouraging. Lacking customer service skills or answers to my questions so I left.

I joined this gym at their membership office prior to it opening. At that time I was told the gym would be open 24 hrs. a day on week days. A few days before opening an email with their hrs was sent, weekdays was not 24 hrs. a day. I initially signed up for the $10 a month package but decided to give their premium membership a try. I was told at their membership office once that there is a charge to upgrade and once that there is a 12 month commitment to up grade, didn't want to do that. When I downloaded their app. to my phone it had an upgrade your membership feature, a few clicks later I'm upgraded! After upgrading I get an email saying I'm on a 12 month commitment? Attempts to rectify this with the gym resulted in two promises that someone someone from the upper level management would call me, no calls ever received. One would think that upgrading would result in a reward rather than a punishment. In spite of the above, I do like the gym and it is close to my home, but their business practices, sketchy at best. Ask a lot of questions if you are planning to join. Because I like the gym I'll give it a very generous 2 stars. I recently canceled my membership. Had to pay over $60 to cancel. Yes, I committed the ultimate sin, I upgraded to the black card from my $10 membership. I guess I will change my generous 2 star rating to a much deserved 1 star.

This location needs help. It needs management and training. Not “Better management” because that would imply they have something good in place.
Plenty experiences to share of how this place is an embarrassment but I won’t dump.
Just know
1) if your payment doesn’t go thru the first time they charge, for example if your bank doesn’t process payment because of asking permission if the charge is true or fraud, you will get a late fee on top of that. They will not charge a second time, even within 24 hours, until they charge it with the late fee. Third party payment processor.
2) they will take down your information and “have the manager get back to you” but the call will never come.
3) no follow up on claims and problems to solve.
4) most of the staff is condescending and stand offish.
5) I will be leaving this gym all together.

Overall place is good to train probably still go there to train being that's its closer to home. They need to fix those workers quick plus the one could possibly be a manager. never came across people like that. workout and trained there for the past 5 days normally go to another gym. Seem like the Lunks that are there are the people running that place especially this one fat white guy going around harassing people kinda sad plus getting stink eye from this one lady kinda of un professional staff I must say cannot even get peace going to the gym. Still think the service at ala moana is better and better workers. Judgmental free place I don't think so lol. Well I just hope those people get better.

Beautiful gym!! All new equipment, no crowds, friendly staff. Great location next to Whole Foods in Kahala Mall. Can’t beat the price either!
