I joined Chicago Elite at 8 months postpartum, having zero experience with CrossFit, and was so pleasantly surprised to find the most supportive coaches and community. It’s now been over two years and I’ve grown stronger, more confident and made life long friends. Highly recommend all the coaches - Bridget, Andrew, & Matt are just the ones I take classes from most often - I trust them to help with scaling options and they always push me to get better.

When I moved to Chicago, I was looking for a new CrossFit gym and I couldn’t have found a better place!

Andrew, Bridget, and the entire coaching staff are amazing. They perfectly balance a welcoming atmosphere with personalized attention to help you improve as an athlete.

Couldn’t recommend CEG, or the seller community, more!

I joined the gym after spending years going to more traditional gyms. At the time, I was burned out and really saw the gym as a chore and just a box to check off. CEF really changed my whole mentality! It was awesome to join such a welcoming community and have such great workout programming! The coaches are very friendly and knowledgeable. They prioritize teaching proper technique and skills which was great for learning new lifts. I cannot recommend CEF enough!

I came in for a first class to check it out and I really think I found what I'm seeking. As a runner whom is trying to bounce back from a summer injury, I like that the cardio is still present but not dominant in the sessions.

Great atmosphere, not just from coaches ..from the people attending too. And this is a great, welcoming factor.

I have yet to actually go to this gym. But, I can say... their Operations Representative - Grazi, is so helpful. Grazi is knowledgeable, informative and responsive to phone calls and txts. FOR ME, one of my main debates of joining gym is the distance from my home. For those familiar with Chicago winter's, it can be a chore to want to leave the house for even a short commute.

These past six weeks working out at Bucktown CrossFit have been nothing but great! The trainers there are awesome: both patient and supportive through the entire process. Not only are the trainers encouraging but so are my fellow classmates and passing gym members. I really like how this program puts you through the fundamentals to teach you the proper forms and techniques when it comes to these new movements before transitioning to full-on CrossFit (great for newbies as CrossFit can be a little intimidating at first). This program provides you with all the tools that you need to succeed: a workout regimen, a nutrition plan and an accountability partner! I’ve learned that my workout style is best in the group format and this is the perfect gym for that. Also, they are dog friendly and it’s nice to have a furry friend around! Would totally recommend to anyone trying to get into CrossFit!

This is a great gym with great coaches! I just finished their six week CrossFit challenge. I lost approx 10lbs and 4% body fat. The workouts are all grueling but the trainers find a way to keep you pushing harder than you thought you could.
The strict meal plan/no drinking was the most difficult but also the most important part of the challenge. Stick with it and remember almost everyone at this gym has gone through the same thing.
Paula my accountability coach was always available to answer any questions I had.
Jackie and Frank were the coaches I spent most of my time with, both are AMAZING coaches. They always left me drenched with sweat, out of breath, laughing and feeling accomplished. Thanks guys!

I did the six week challenge here and I have to say it was the greatest investment to myself that I could have ever done, I saw instant results and I learned so much about myself that I never knew. For example how easy It is to actually eat healthy and how fast It was to actually reach my body goals. I learned so much about how resilient I can be with a strong mind set and straight up dedication but, it’s nice that I didn’t have to do it alone I had my coach Paula by my side and it made sticking true to myself easier. Anyways I decided to join in the end :)

Just finished up the 6 week challenge. It is advertised as free but actually costs $600. If you lose 20lbs or lose 5% body fat you can get those $600 as credit towards a membership. But even then you can’t use all the credit to pay monthly. You can only use $150 of it. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re not financially able but would if you need that extra push to live a healthier life. I personally decided to go through with it because it includes a meal plan, accountability coach, and classes to improve my health instead of spending it on other unnecessary things. The classes are really great! And the people do focus on safety and improvement. I didn’t get so lucky with my accountability coach because I didn’t feel I could reach out to him whenever I was struggling so I just reached out for the weekly check ins. If you get bored at the gym easily or just don’t know what exercises you should be doing, CrossFit is a great solution for that.

I am done with my six week challenge at Bucktown crossfit and this is the second time that I did the challenge. This time around it was great except for the accountability coach which did not reach out to me at the end of every week like they were supposed to. The workouts were great and the rest of the staff and coaches were great as well. I love the group workouts and how everyone cheers on the people who are still finishing up the workout. I would definitely recommend this place just did not like the accountability coach I had this time around.

I just finished my six week challenge and my results are great. The team and staff that works at bucktown are extremely helpful, patient, and kind. I love the community of people that workout and work here. The only reason I gave one less start is because for the six week challenge you have an accountability coach to help guide you and push you forward and I didn't have that. The accountability coach I checked in a few times throughout the challenge and didn't seem to enthusiastic when they did. I thank God that I am able to push myself especially after already have completed this six week challenge before so it's all good! Thanks to all the staff and community at BTCF!!! ❤

This review is being posted as part of completing the 6-week challenge, but all thoughts are my own. Overall, I had a great experience at Bucktown, lost 13 pounds, and would do the challenge again. Ultimately, I did not sign up for a membership because even with a discount, the monthly cost was more than I was willing to spend on a gym.

Things I loved
1. Community atmosphere – Everyone is so supportive! There's a very welcoming and encouraging atmosphere. You’ll get plenty of cheering from coaches and fellow fundamentals classmates during workouts.
2. Puppies – A few of the staff bring their dogs to work and members are allowed to bring dogs as well, so there are almost always cute, well-behaved pups hanging around the gym.
3. Small class sizes – The fundamentals classes max out at 10 people, with average class size of 5-7. The coaches are able to provide lots of feedback and adjustments as you learn new techniques.
4. Variety of workouts – I was a running & yoga person before this challenge, so I learned a lot of new fitness routines. You’ll never do the same workout twice, and you’ll be challenged every time you show up.
5. Stronger every day – I loved feeling stronger day by day as I completed the challenge (though I could have done without all the bruises). It’s great to see the pounds coming off, look leaner in the mirror, and just feel more capable.

Things that didn’t work for me/room for improvement
1. Meal plan – We received zero directions on the goals of the diet except to follow the meal plan recipes, but annoyingly we did get a pushy sales pitch for supplements. The meal plan is boring and repetitive; I had to make a lot of substitutions to make it palatable, but coaches didn’t offer any help with calculating calorie exchanges, eating when traveling, managing snacks/cravings, or other commons FAQs.
2. Coaching inconsistency – Each coach takes a little different approach, which has its advantages, but sometimes they’re inconsistent in advice and techniques. Some coaches offer lot of warm-up and stretching, others get straight to prepping you for the workout, and I heard conflicting advice on the meal plan.
3. Parking – There is very limited parking and classes are frequently interrupted so people can move their cars. If you can’t walk or take public transit to Bucktown, look for a different crossfit gym.
4. Cool-down – there is no cool-down or stretching after the workout, which I found problematic.
5. Misleading advertising – If you’re reading reviews, you should already be aware that this is not a “free” program. If you complete the challenge, your $600 is applied as a down payment on the rest of your yearly membership.

I’m wrapping up the six week challenge at Bucktown CrossFit and I’ve really enjoyed the experience overall. Let me start by saying that the “free” challenge is anything but free. It’s a time commitment and a lot of discipline to complete. Not to mention I spent considerably more than what I typically would on groceries in following the nutrition plan. Having said that, I’d say it’s been worth it. My physical condition has improved (I was in good shape when I started the challenge) and I feel that I’m able to sleep better and generally have more energy and improved concentration, which I attribute largely to the nutrition. As far as the workouts, I’ve really enjoyed the classes and the instructors have been really helpful. They’re able to modify the workouts so you can participate and be challenged regardless of what you’re physical condition is currently or if you have any specific physical limitations. The groups are fun and it doubles as a way to meet people and build community. The gyms clean and well kept and as of my writing this they have just purchased some new barbells and bikes. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a way to get in better shape and learn something new about yourself.

So many 5 stars shocked me and someone has to be honest now.
First of all, writing a Google/Yelp review is one of the contract item to get your REFUND for the 6 week challenge (and that's how they get the good reviews here). If you don't write review or check-in on Facebook every time you gets in the gym, they will NOT REFUND you even if you get to the GOAL. There are also many rules on the contract to try their best to make sure you cannot get your $600 back.
Secondly, they are not as good as they act in the orientation. The accountable and nutrition coach are not helpful at all. The meal plan is similar to the Keto diet (which proved to be unhealthy to normal people). I didn't get any progress in the first 3 weeks but I followed exactly their meal plan. The coach told me I can lose some weight during the period. If I didn't see any progress, it must be my fault that I didn't follow. Seriously?? Then the last 3 weeks I customized the food on my own and work out more to reach the goal. But you can imagine, losing 5% of 20lb in such short time is VERY HARMFUL to your body.

This gym is awesome! I did the 6 week challenge and they give you everything you need to succeed. Of course, ultimately it's up to you to put in the work. I have had the hardest workouts of my life in this gym. Crossfit can be intimidating but they are always helping you with your form. They break down the exercises into a series of 4 or 5 steps to ensure that you have proper form. During the workout, they blast music and it just makes you push that much harder. I was usually one of the last ones to finish the workout and everyone would encourage me to finish strong. The environment at Bucktown Crossfit is great!

HONEST REVIEW
This review is based solely on their “free” 6-week challenge.
First off, if you don’t have $600 to throw around and waste, don’t bother.
I signed up thinking this would be free and drove over an hour to their orientation about how this challenge works. They talk about how it’s all “personalized” to you, you’ll get a personal coach, and 100% free. It’s definitely not any of this. They give you a very generic meal plan that’s based on counting macros, your “personal coach” barely checks up on you besides “what are you doing to drop weight these last 3weeks?”, or very generic “motivational” things. Also, the meal plan is basically the same for everyone minus the portion sizes are probably a bit different.
After their orientation is when they decide to tell you you actually have to pay $600 to do this program to “hold you accountable”. I get that holding your money will hold people accountable for sure, but you definitely should NOT have to pay almost $1000 for this bogus program! It’s not worth it!
The first 3 weeks you take On-ramp classes, which are just classes that show you how to do certain movements like a power clean, deadlift...etc, then you’ll actually workout for at most 15minutes after spending 45min learning the movements. I get that learning the movement is important, but when you only have 6 weeks to drop 20lbs or 5% body fat and you’re already somewhat fit, then this WILL NOT give you any drastic changes!
Furthermore, they measure your body fat on a Omron handheld body fat monitor. Those things are super inaccurate and can fluctuate by as much as 2-3% based on hydration, body temp, and if you worked out beforehand or not!
This being said leads me into my last point, my own experience. First, their meal plan and workouts didn’t do much drastic change for me considering I’ve been pretty active due to being in the military, so I had to find my own extra workouts to do based on cardio, and cut the meal plan they gave me in half to actually have some results. I went in for my final weigh in at 4:45AM and was at 135lbs and 18.6% body fat; I started at 148lbs and 23.4% body fat. However, the day before I was down at 17.6% body fat, but I used the monitor AFTER I worked out. This same day, at 5:45AM I decided to take a video and measure my body fat again after I did the 5AM workout class because it didn’t seem right that I had to measure my body fat before a workout when their contract doesn’t mention that at all. Of course I was back down to 17.6% body fat!!! When I showed them this they basically ignored me and said they already recorded my “final results”, even though this was the SAME DAY, less than an hour apart!!!! My $600 was in the hands of a super unreliable machine that fluctuated by as much as 1% in less than as hour that could’ve gotten my money back!

By the way, I told Donna (my coach) about this over messenger, and she completely ignored my messages and just sent back very generic responses and ended it with my options of getting a membership there for “discounted” which it really isn’t discounted cause I put $600 “towards” it technically.

Trust me, just get a good friend and make them workout with you at a gym that’s $10/month and look up a decent meal plan! Because this is a complete waste of $600. I only know of 1 person in my group who actually “dropped” the 5% and this was because she was able to submit the percentage AFTER her morning workout!

If anyone is on the fence about it, just save yourself the money, unless you have $600 to donate to their gym, OR unless you’ve never worked out or eaten healthy in your life, then this plan might work for you.

Do the 6 Week Transformation Program. Do it! Commit to it 100% and the result will speak for itself. Get in there and sign up now! I was always reluctant about CrossFit. Even after I was talked into going in to my first class I was hesitant. I am happy to say I could not have been more wrong! Bucktown CrossFit is amazing. The facility is great, the staff is awesome and the other members are so friendly. I immediately started up in their 6 week Challenge. I have been an active person my whole life, but this program took me to a whole other level. They sat me down and asked me about my goals, provided me with a diet plan specific to my goal and then asked me to fully commit to it. It was not hard to commit after seeing incredible results in the first week. My accountability coach Matt followed me through it and regularly encouraged me and congratulated me with each week I made progress. My goal was to lose body fat and I do not exaggerate that fat literally melted right off of me each week. I do not regret a single early morning class because even when you don't think you have it in you, the staff is right there the whole way to give you the advice, technique and confidence to tackle any workout you walk into. Going into the last week of the 6 week challenge I was down to below 10% body fat and had not been this lean since cutting weight for high school wrestling. I am looking forward to each and every challenge presented by Bucktown!

I had zero crossfit experience going into the free 6 week challenge that I signed up for. I was very out of shape and wanted to really jump into something that would kick start my weight loss journey. I just finished my 6 week challenge and lost 13# and 6% body fat.

Everyone at the gym was extremely friendly and helpful. The coaches really care about teaching you the correct way to do the movements and they help you scale the workout to your own abilities. I was introduced to BTCF by Facebook when I came across the "Free 6-week challenge." I had been curious to try CrossFit for a while in hopes to improve upon strength training and get into a routine again. I felt that a "free" opportunity to try it for 6 weeks was a sign it was time.

Disclaimer: Turns out it's not free (they incentivize you to cut a % of body fat or lose the weight by putting money down to gain back if you reach the pre-set goals). They caught me on a very motivated day - so I ended up signing up for the challenge.

Notes:
-/+ Once you sign up for the Challenge, the only way to get your money back is to give it a shot. If you're not ready to do it, be honest with yourself.
+ Accommodating: I ended up having A LOT of life changes going on just before the challenge I initially oriented for, so after I reached out the BTCF team, the coaches were very kind enough in postponing my challenge so I could truly give it my best shot amidst the chaos of work and life.
-/+ There were coaches I preferred over others for specific teaching styles. Not all styles of coaching were consistent - which is fine!
-/+For the most part, the staff is welcoming on a consistent basis...yes, for the most part.
+I really liked the 6-week program's use of accountability coaches. Andrew was AWESOME. Rock on, AW.
-Challenge specific: The diet program is adapted to the client but I don't think the program was necessarily the right approach for me and my needs. That being said, it’s not a one-size fits all challenge The diet regimen was pretty rigorous, and I do wish there was more of an individualized approach to it throughout the challenge.
- Class times were available all week, but some filled up a week in advance. It was difficult for me to make it in at a decent hour (not 5am or 6am or 8pm) since I commute to the suburbs for work.

Overall, I like the gym, the camaraderie, and the exposure I got to Crossfit from BTCF.
Just one star down for the lack of transparency and issues with the challenge and coaches.

Just some perspective from me before you keep reading: I wasn't really in it for the weight loss, I just wanted to get in shape. In retrospect, I probably would have benefited from a less intense challenge - but I have learned that through this experience.
I have a specific preference in what I need from a coach and diet/fitness program that would encourage me to invest in a gym, so I was not perfectly satisfied - but overall pleased with the experience and opportunity.

Overall, I recommend the experience for those willing to give CrossFit a shot.

Just completed my 6-week challenge- and oh was it a challenge! For myself, it was a physically changing and mentally motivating experience. Each class was led thoughtfully by the coaches there, keeping a watchful eye on form & progress. They did their best to push everyone to their full potential- no half days!
It was nice to see a team effort on both the instructor side & the challenger side.
Even more, the other members of Bucktown Crossfit were self motivated & team orientated, creating an inspiring & exciting place to be- at 7am, which is early for me, but worth it!
If you’re think about doing the challenge or joining the team, just do it!

I was looking for a way to give my body a break and stop drinking alcohol for a bit. I ran across the 6 week challenge and decided to give it a shot. I love the fact that there was a monetary amount set up front for accountability purposes for this challenge. You complete the challenge, you get it back. You slack and don’t take it seriously, you don’t. It makes you stick to the whole plan, which includes workout sessions and nutrition, and makes you think twice when you start craving things not in your meal plan.

Immediately I started shedding weight, which I didn’t think I had much to shed, and also body fat. My body looks good again and feels solid. Definitely have learned a few things about nutrition and exercising that I can implement moving forward in my life.

I highly recommend putting yourself through the challenge. You’ll be glad you did.

I did the 6 week challenge at BTCF, and I'm so glad I made the move. The goal is to lose a certain amount of weight or body fat over the course of the challenge.

The most impressive part about the whole experience was the attention to form and technique that the coaches give here. The first 3 weeks are spent on on-boarding people who are new to the gym/Crossfit in general. There are accountability coaches (shout out to Matt and Andrew) who monitor your progress and keep you motivated and on track towards achieving the goals.

Not only do the coaches teach the basics with utmost detail and care at the beginning, but they spend time in every class on making sure the members get their form and technique right. This is extremely important and probably forgotten but extremely essential to avoiding injuries, which, I personally know a thing or two about (I had shoulder injuries in both my shoulders before and not once did I injure or aggravate anything over the entire 6 weeks)

Lastly, and probably most important to this challenge was the nutrition plan that one receives before starting the challenge..Let me tell you, it works. The coaches stay with you all the way and provided you stay with them, you see the results!

I did the 6-week challenge and, in short, was not disappointed. The coaches do a very good job teaching you the lifts and techniques before each workout, and coach you if you need some more work. The classes themselves are very intense, so my resolve and mental toughness has improved at the end of the program. Meal plan was pretty much self explanatory, and if I had any questions the nutritionist always answered them.
A little bit about my coach, Andrew. He is energetic and excited about each workout, and he will meet you where you’re at with your own goals and push you to meet and exceed them.
I recommend it to anyone looking to get back into shape or anyone looking to for a serious challenge.

Signed up for a 6 week challenge as I needed a change and was fed of my schedule And lack of exercise. I work crazy hours so regular gym was very hard. Went for an orientation and they explained how the workout goes and gave me a full meal plan. Classes go anywhere from 5am till 8pm to accommodate all schedules. Workouts are very intense but i started seeing fast results. Shape, strength and stamina. Staff and trainers are very friendly and experienced. Thanks for helping out and giving me the challenge, would definitely continue at Bucktown CrossFit and highly recommend it to anyone.

Bucktown CrossFit has literally changed my life since day one. The coaches are super skilled and friendly . The people who attend the classes are willing to help you and encourage you to do your last rep. I highly recommend people who want to loose weight and tone up their bodies to do the 6 week challenge like I did. In 6 weeks I lost 20 pounds just attending 3 classes per week and following a healthy diet. It works. If you decide to join be ready to meet lots of friendly people. Bucktown CrossFit is a great community.

I’m just wrapping up my 6 week challenge and I have to say I feel pretty great! It’s been a hot minute since I really focused on working out regularly, and this challenge 100% helped me remember why feeling stronger is so great! If you have the time, and can be focused/dedicated for 6 weeks, I would recommend.

The coaches and staff at Bucktown have been nothing but helpful, encouraging and most importantly for me, welcoming. In all my workouts there was a varying amount of strength level, and adjustments were always made (whether someone needed more or less challenge). My only critique is how they sell the accountability coach aspect of the program. My expectation was that it would be a little more personalized (it’s one message a week), but I will say that I didn’t need a lot of questions answered- and likely if you did, I think the relationship there would be more involved.

Overall, this challenge has given me a jump start on getting back into consistent workouts, and I was able to try out CrossFit to see what all they hype is about... and it works. :)

Finishing the 6 week challenge tomorrow. I’d recommend it if you’re ready to put in the work. I came in skeptical of the CrossFit community. We’ve all heard the jokes. And, to be fair... some of the stereotypes are true. :) I’ve done CrossFit style workouts, so I wasn’t a total “noob” but first time in the “lions den.” There are a lot of complex movements in CrossFit and many times you need to do those movements repeatedly in a given workout. The coaches do a great job breaking those movements down so that you are doing the workouts properly, and most importantly, safely!

The gym community is very warm and welcoming. Regardless of you fitness level, you will feel like you belong. Coaches and other members alike; everyone is there to create an atmosphere centered around fitness and making it fun.

Also, on certain days, there are some amazingly cute dogs!! Dogs, by themselves, always make things better.

I did the 6 week challenge from August to September.
I did 4/5 classes a week in average during the 6 weeks.

What I liked the most was the first 3 weeks called On-Ramp. Matt was a really great coach and we learnt the technique of the most important moves (box jumps, lifting, row deadlift etc). Thanks to this we felt confident for the crossfit classes.

I haven't reached the challenge goals which were: - 20 pounds or -5% Bodyfat.
I only lost -7 pounds and -3,5% bodyfat, which is not bad but I think that the challenge is not possible for everyone. It depends on how far you come from and your metabolism etc etc...
But they propose you a discount according to your weight loss or bodyfat loss, which is a good reward.

Anyway, the box is great and there is a good atmosphere.
The coaches were great apart from some uncomfortable remarks sometimes.
That's why I put 4 stars instead of 5.

I just completed the 6 week challenge and I am hooked. I never though I would be one to do CrossFit but everyone at Bucktown CrossFit was extremely helpful in getting beginners acclimated. The 6 week challenge, it was a great introduction for beginners and even more experience gym users. The resources they provided are exceptional and its definitely worth checking out. The staff as well as the members were more then willing to help out. I really felt it was more than a gym or box but it was also building a community.

I did the 6 week challenge that started Aug 12 and ended today. I can say without a doubt it was the best decision I made. I once had a love for fitness that had drifted away and was hidden under a nice thick layer of fat. 6 weeks later I'm leaner then I've been in years my cardio and endurance are both up my strength is up and I've learned so many complex lifts that I can take with me and utilize in my training for the future. If you've never done CrossFit I recommend the challenge. It will open your eyes to a whole different side of CrossFit that is unlike the stereotypes you hear. You won't be sad you did.

I have struggled with body / food issues most of my life. I have tried different diets and big box gyms. So, needless to say when I signed up for the 6 week challenge I was skeptical, especially after forking over $600 to join the challenge.
The first few days of the challenge was certainly difficult. I was crabby, withdrawing from sugar and asking myself why I was so easily talked out of money. About a week in everything changed.
I began to use the tools that Bucktown Crossfit had given me. I took inspiration from fellow challenge cohorts and saw the diet plan as a roadmap to a healthy eating lifestyle rather than a punishing undertaking. I looked forward to class and seeing other members and coaches. I realized that the $600 buy in was a necessary motivator required to get most schlubs like me to follow through on all my goals. Low and behold, 6 weeks later i've lost 23 pounds and 6% body fat.
As the fat kid in the room who was forever intimidated by stale gyms with bros pumping out reps in the corner and never met a French Fry I didn't like , I can't say enough positive things about Bucktown Crossfit. The people: a true sense of community exists. You're not tuning out the environment around you with your earbuds. You actually talk to people! The coaches : Bucktown Crossfits' secret weapons. The coaches erode the intimidation factor , talk you through and help strategize the days workout and do their best to ensure that no one injuries themselves. All of the coaches are priceless but my handsdown favs are ANDREW WESTCOTT and JESSICA "JT " TAYLOR. ANDREW WESTCOTT and JESSICA "JT" TAYLOR I straight up would have failed without your help and attention!
The workouts: intense but always different. You are never bored and simply going through the motions just to get through the workouts.
The expert nutrition plan: Yes, there is a certified nutritionist working with you to attain your goals. An essential part of any healthy transformations.
If you're considering Crossfit or signing up for the 6 week challenge do it! It will change your life. You will realize that fitness is more than just jumping on a treadmill for 30 minutes 3 times a week. You will gain knowledge and tools to carry you forward with a new found confidence and perspective on living a truly healthy life.

Thank you Bucktown Crossfit!
26 lbs & 6% body fat gone!

Bucktown crossfit brings you in for a free** 6 week challenge that isn’t free. I went to an orientation where i believed that it was 100% free, but had a $600 deposit sprung on me without any warning in any of the sign up forms. This, of course, puts pressure on the whole group in the orientation to sign up.
If i had been warned about this, it would have been fine because if you succeed in the challenge you get the $600 back.
I received an email asking me for feedback about the orientation, and i responded with:

“It was really informative and the staff was very nice.

However, i disagree with the approach you take regarding the money. You put 10 or so people in a room then ask for $600, which wasn’t hinted at in any of the forms or sign up sheets before you arrive (if it was, it was purposefully hidden).

I get that “you can earn it back” by completing the challenge, but it still smells of deceit. Luckily, i really wanna do the program and have $600 to spare over the course of 6 weeks.

In the future, i’d recommend you be more forthcoming. This will be going on my yelp review, my final review, and by word of mouth to all of my peers unless i see action taken.”

Their response was that they don’t take any one on that feels this way.

Bucktown crossfit has to hold themselves accountable instead of turning away naysayers. I will be seeking another program that is more upfront about what they offer.

Place seems good, they even have 8 or 9 rowers.. seems completely legit.

Went excited to try out the FREE 6 week weight loss challenge they advertise on Facebook. As a long Crossfitter, I came back to Chicago in hopes of finding a gym to do crossfit, since I consider the ambiance etc its what its all about.. I know acrossfit is expensive.. I know that the upkeep of a gym is expensive.. but false advertissement is not the way to go.
1. The coach's explanation and power point was fantastic.. he seemed to know what he was talking.. even if I disagree on his views on ketosis.
2. Then, after the presentation... he told us we had to put down a deposit of 600 dollars to start the challenge (we could pay it howver we wanted in the first 4 weeks) but we had to put that down with the promise of getting a refund IF we reached the goals of losing 20 lbs or 5% fat in 6 weeks. I guess that if we didn't, then money is gone.
3. As an avid Crossfitter from gyms like Chicago Crossfit, Crossfit Chamberi (Madrid), Crossfit Montpellier, Crossfit Richmond (Melbourne), I found this extremely upsetting...

I never ever put low ratings even if I don't agree with certain coaches et al.. but I don't agree with false advertisement and was extrenely upset when I found I either had to out down 600 bucks or get a 1 year membership.

I'm just finishing up the 6 week challenge, and feeling pretty good about it. Firstly, the gym is a really great atmosphere. Just what you would want from a crossfit gym. People are encouraging and welcoming, and everyone is in it together. The coaches are super great, as well, always showing how to perform the movements correctly before each wod.
(Special shout out to Kim! She rocks.)
There was one incident that sort of stuck with me, though, with a particular coach. One of the coaches was doing the wod with us and they skipped many reps each time just to get ahead.. it made me and a few other athletes pretty upset to see, considering this person was a trainer and should be setting an example. Otherwise, everyone was great!
As far as the challenge itself. I did a bulking plan instead of a weight loss plan, so it was a lot of work on my own, but the crossfit classes helped me push myself. It really is what you put into it. I achieved my goal, which was to gain weight/muscle, but I also did some lifting outside of the gym, as well as playing rugby. I felt the nutrition planning was definitely great, especially if you don't know where to start. I was just hoping it would've been a little more individualized, but I also understand that, that would be hard to do with so many people.
Overall, I think it's a great thing to start if you're looking to get healthy/lose weight and you need some direction!

I participated in a six-week fitness challenge at Bucktown Crossfit. The challenge involved attending a minimum of three classes per week and following a healthy nutrition plan (not an emergency weight-loss diet!). The challenge also included specific goals that, when completed, redeem a percentage (up to 100%!) of your fees.

The results are legit: I started the challenge fairly lean and STILL dropped ~5% body fat. I'm feeling great about how my body looks, how I feel in it, and what I'm putting into it. But the best part for me was learning a TON of new exercises from super positive and encouraging coaches. I highly recommend Bucktown Crossfit if you're looking for a path toward sustainable health.

Bucktown Crossfit!
Where to begin! First of this place is freaking awesome. Awesome music playlist(always gets me bumping), dedicated educated staff, and motivational members. Literally everything about this place is awesome.
I did the 6 week challenge and I absolutely loved every day of it. From day one all the way to the end of the challenge. The staff and fellow members always made me feel very welcomed(shout out to my coaches Matt, JT, Jackie, Kim). They always pushed me to give it 110%. Even when I thought I was done, no gas left in the tank. Their words of encouragement always helped me push past what I thought was my threshold. They always made me feel like they wanted me to genuinely get better. The atmosphere at this place made me want to come back again and again. No matter how sore or tired I was.
The hardest part of the challenge for me was the nutrition. But if you actually follow it 100%(no cheat days) you will reach your goal and you will definitely see results. For the first 2 weeks I was actually doing the nutrition plan wrong and was over eating. But once I spoke Donna (the nutritionist) who is also a badass, we figured out the problem(don't eat carbs for dinner duh). After that I started seeing almost immediate results.
If you are tried of the gym scene where you go and you are on your own day in and day out. Sometimes not knowing what you are doing, It gets difficult to stay motivated and keep going. That was my issue for a very long time. Finding a training partner that fits your schedule and is dependable was also really difficult to find. But at Bucktown Crossfit there is always someone to workout with that is going to push you to your limits. That wants you to be better. The things I am able to do after only 6 weeks almost baffles me. I am capable of doing so much more than I ever thought I would. I have signed up for a year long membership because this place is so amazing and the results I have achieved.
If you genuinely want to get in the best shape of your life and are willing to do things you probably have never done before. Take the 6 week challenge. Its far from easy, but if you are dedicated and consistent and always give it your all. You wont be disappointed.

If you're new to CrossFit they will take the time to explain the moves. It's fun to be in class with people that you see regularly. it's definitely a different way to work out that I've enjoyed a lot. I believe the 6 week challenge worked for many people, but the generic meal plan may not be for everyone. If you do have questions you can ask Donna who is the nutritionist and is very nice.

The 6 week challenge is not for everyone, everyone has the same exact goal no matter your gender, weight, or fitness level which is not practical or fair. I followed the plan and it didn’t work for me although it did work for others. You will lose your entire deposit though if you don’t meet the goal (no leniency) so if you do it make sure it’s the right choice for you!

I want to start out by saying I was the person driving by crossfit gyms watching the people workout thinking "you people are frickin NUTS!"
I'm now one of those people that are in the gym working my ass off 3-4 times a week. I started with the 6 week challenge and got incredible results. You have to follow the guidelines and work hard in class, but you WILL see results.

I hadn't stepped into a gym in 18 years, am in my 40's, and overweight. Gyms and the people in them intimidated me. From the start, everyone from the staff to the other members were welcoming and encouraging. We had to modify some of the moves because I simply couldn't do them. JT never let me get down on myself, and just kept telling me to keep going. She and Matt knew exactly when I was starting to "hit my wall" and kept motivating me-even when I snarled at them.

I have never been to a place where other class members stick around when they are done with their workout to encourage the others that are still going. There's always high fives and fist bumps and congratulations being passed around after class. The sense of "we are in this together" goes from the newbies to the ones that I watched incredulously my first few weeks, amazed by what they were doing.

I'm going to be one of the incredulous ones. It may take me six months, a year, or even 2 years....but I'm going to do it. I cant thank everyone at Bucktown Crossfit enough for literally changing my life. I owe you everything!!!

I just participated in the 6 week challenge and although they didn’t have a nursing moms program, they were willing to work with me on adjusting according to need. What would have brought it to 5 stars would be to already have a plan in place, not one we would have to experiment with! Love it here.

Bucktown CrossFit is the first CrossFit gym I have ever tried, and it is my first time doing CrossFit. Overall, I have I positive outlook on the gym and the staff that work here. The staff is motivational the music that they play gets me revved up and the group of people that you work out with kept me going as well. There are many levels of cross fitters, so I never felt out of place some were just beginning as I were and some have done it for some time, but they never make you feel less than. The members are just as helpful as the coaches are.
The workouts are challenging and gets your blood pumping fast, so it was just what I was looking for I wrestled for a living so giving it all you have for a short period sounded way too familiar.
I do not think I would have been able to complete the 6 Week Challenge if it wasn’t for everyone at Bucktown CrossFit they make it easy to want to come back and work hard not only for yourself but others around you because they cheer you on and help want to push you further. I would recommend Bucktown to anyone who is interested in CrossFit or just looking for a great place to get in shape while listening to great music. Oh and I think you can bring your dog too.

I just finished my 6 week challenge with BTCF, later tonight is my final weigh in actually! Im alittle nervous for my final results. However whatever happens tonight I still will rate this gym a solid 5 stars forsure. The staff, coaches and overall everyone are so welcoming, helpful, and tackle the excerises head on! Before BTCF I had absolutely no experience in CrossFit. Now that I leave I must say its high endurance, direct, and prepare to work your butt off! You might be sweaty and tired in the beginning but the more u stick to it the better your become and leave with such a satisfaction amoung yourself! The community was great! I would recommend to others if interested.

This is a great fitness program. Really good coaches and community. For all the newcomers I would recommend getting a bunch of sessions in with Jason and James. I felt as though they were the best at helping someone like me, who was really out of shape, keep my form right. I was on edge about joining because of the initial $600 deposit and the idea of loosing 20lbs in 6 weeks didn't sound very healthy but very happy that I did. The nutrition plan makes sure your loosing fat and not muscle. Give it everything you got and you will get amazing results! Do it!

Just finished my six week challenge, it was definitely a learning experience. I came in pretty scared about crossfit but it turns out this place has the friendliest instructor, they are both patient and welcoming. It's a great atmosphere, the classes are great. This is exactly what I needed to start my way into a more healthy lifestyle. Coaches that love what they do and that keep you accountable.

I did the 6-week challenge and have nothing but good things to say about the program and the gym. The program was definitely a challenge, but one that leaves you feeling incredibly accomplished by the end of the 6 weeks. The coaches set you up for success - the meal plan is straightforward and weekly accountability check-ins helped me stay on track. The classes are great and always a challenge. Thank you to everyone at Bucktown CrossFit for making the challenge such a great experience for me!

I did the 6 week challenge here and it was awesome. All the coaches were encouraging and the classes were SO FUN. I am not an athlete, so was nervous going into it but finally found a work out that I actually enjoy. JT was motivational and hilarious and my new best friend. I'd recommend this place to anyone.

Just finishing up the 6 week challenge at Bucktown Crossfit. They have an amazing program and as an athlete I felt challenged and really appreciated the holistic style of their program – e.g. not only strength, but incorporating mobility and nutrition. In addition there is a great atmosphere from not only the coaches but the people themselves create a very supportive environment to learn and train in. Every workout was different and was definitely pushed to challenge myself each and every workout. The other good thing is their class availability – starting from 530 to 8 at night which I appreciated and know many did given work and life commitments. Overall great experience.

I think I was sold on this gym the moment I walked in for orientation and was greeted by a friendly golden retriever named "Coach" and it only got better from there. In the past 6 weeks I have challenged myself physically and mentally in the best of ways. Learning new workout techniques and feeling myself grow stronger with every 5lbs added to my barbell. Being a part of Bucktown Crossfit made me feel like an athlete again which is saying a lot because it has been seven years since I was a rower.

If you are thinking about joining this gym and in particular, doing the six-week challenge here is the advice I would give you:
1. Take all of Jason's classes. He is always so energetic and excited to be with the group, he learns your name pretty much on the first day and encourages you every step of the way. He has this uncanny ability to be both tough and super supportive at the same time and knows exactly what to say to get you to push that extra 10% towards your goal. Definitely not a class to miss.
2. The nutrition plan is not a general guideline, it should be followed EXACTLY as they give it to you. Trust me, as I treated it as a guideline for a few weeks and have regretted it coming into this last week.
3. Get to know the people around you who are also part of the challenge/the wiser ones who have been along longer than a couple of weeks. Probably the BEST part of Bucktown Crossfit is the community they have built. Everyone is encouraging and friendly even at 5:30am when it is raining outside and finding parking has been a complete nightmare you can count on them to cheer you on.

Anyway, I hope people have gotten this far in my review and don't want to be too long winded, but all I have to say is this place is definitely worth checking out. I may not have completed the challenge fully (I may have my weigh out is tomorrow so fingers crossed), but no matter what the scale says I know I've come out of this experience with a new set of skills, motivation to work harder and a great experience to look back on. Also a hell of a lot of burpees under my belt so there's something to that.

Did the 6-week challenge. It was a great introduction to cross-fit. Gym atmosphere is great. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Most classes I went to (usually evening 6, 7, or 8pm) were pretty small so it was always easy to get extra instruction or ask a question. There is always instruction time for the more complex movements and options to scale for difficult ones, so beginners will be very comfortable. People with more experience or higher fitness levels will probably want to seek out the more advanced classes that they offer though.

I started at Bucktown Crossfit on a 6 week challenge. I love the gym and crossfit in general. Most of the staff is extremely friendly and nice. They help with modifications for every workout. They also get to know you and where you are at ability wise and that was a big help for me during the workouts. They pushed me to do heavier weights when I didn't think I could. The challenge itself was rewarding. It was the first time I have actually stuck to a weight loss program for more than a few weeks at a time. The meal plan however was very basic, and pretty much the same for everyone. Overall I would recommend this challenge and gym to everyone, but like everything else what you put into it is what you get out of it!

This was the first time I tried crossfit and I did not regret it. Not only is the staff super friendly but so is the environment. I did the 6 week crossfit challenge which forced me to do excercises and workouts I would have never thought of doing before and I definitely felt it everywhere especially during the outside runs. The instructors are patient and are super motivating during the classes they push you and blast music to really get you going which I loved. Overall it was a great experience and highly recommend for people that want to meet new people and push themselves.

As a first timer attempting Crossfit, it has definitely been a challenge. I was part of the 6-week challenge and you have to really have some sort of athletic background, because as a long time distance-runnner, I felt like everything was super new for me. If you have never been active before, I don't recommend to jump right into this since classes are intense and will make you work hard. I advice to get some health professional advice before committing to crossfit. I wish that before I had decided to join this 6 week challenge, I would have talked to a health professional and their advice on taking on this 6 week challenge. The coaches here know a lot of what they teach, and will help you out if you're struggling, but like mentioned before you must have basic knowledge of a gym and what crossfit is about. During the 1hr class, there will be a practice run through all of the actual workout, but most times that's not enough time to really learn or get comfortable with the excersice. I recommend this gym for people that are bored of just hitting up the gym and doing the same routines, and if you have the buck to invest. Some downsides to the gym is the facility itself, it's a very in-and-out gym and there is not much space to store personal items. There are only two restrooms, and just the overall space is very reduced. I don't drive, but for those that do, there is no parking lot. I am used to gyms that facilitate you with towels, showers, lockers (at least), and for the price of the membership, I don't think it's worth it, at least not for my wallet.

I did the 6 - Week Challenge and enjoyed learning some new work outs with barbells like the cleans, squats and jerks as well as kettle ball work outs I don't normally do. The works of the day were different and unique, some of them were a bit too easy to accomplish and I felt like I needed to hit the gym to really get a good work out in, others were completely exhausting. The cross fit challenge said there would be a custom meal plan but it was more like a generic meal plan they used for everyone. Overall I had a good experience and met some new people and enjoyed learning some new work out techniques. JT as an instructor was who I primarily went to as an instructor was awesome and patient while teaching.

Everyone at Bucktown Crossfit has extensive knowledge and they were always available to answer my questions. I took 6pm classes with coach James Rudy, he took time to address specific concerns and he gave me tips to modify aspects of the WOD to meet my specific needs.
I would highly recommend Bucktown Crossfit to anyone looking for the motivation and support to become more physically active and healthy! Fun community and dog friendly!

This place is awesome!!

Pros: Large space, clean and we'll kept, nice equipment, decent parking, storage, showers.

Cons: No late-morning classes.

I've just finished the 6-week challenge and I can absolutely say that this is one if the best things I've done for myself.

The gym is beautiful. The place is well lit and kept clean. The macines and equipment are also in good condition and always put away. The place has an all around good vibe about it.

The workouts are challenging! Most of them left me lying on the floor in a pool of my own sweat. The classes are creative and there is always good education being passed on. There are beginners and experienced crossfitters at every class and the coaches are amazing at modifying workouts to fit everyone's level. They have worked with me everyday to help me find a challenging weight to use for a specific workout or adapt a move to ensure I had a good workout. They are great at keeping you motivated through the whole class.

The community is the best. I was instantly welcomed by staff, regulars, and other challengers. We crushed the workouts together and cheered each other on. The people are genuine and want to help you grow. They've made sure I got those last couple reps in and helped me realize that I could probably add another 5lbs to the bar.

I look and feel great and I've formed healthy lifestyle habits. These are truly things not every gym can do. The people and knowledge living at BTCF is unique.

Signed up for the 6-week challenge and it was the worst experience. First off they straight up lied to me on what was included in this challenge. I was told there would be body measurements, BMI would be taken, and before and after pictures. None of which ever happened. The coaches I got where extremely unprofessional. One told us he wouldn't learn everyone's name. I work in the fitness industry and I would never tell that to a group class. The coaches said to message them with any questions. When I missed a workout I asked them to send me the workout I missed and never got a response. I stopped going and asked for some type of reimbursement and the response I got was "sorry we are unable to return any money at this time, hope you have a happy holiday!" I also felt this was unprofessional. If you want to go to a gym where they treat you like crap and just take your money then this is the place.
