Literally the only part of my kids' childhoods I wanted to fast forward through was their time at Dovetail over the last year, previously in classes there it was better tho! The teacher had the kids sign a contract about commitment, teamwork etc (cool!) my daughter took it super seriously bc she's like that. The teacher himself then proceeded to come late or not show up at class at all (no notice or group txt would even come from dovetail after the fact- we just show up and it would empty the majority of times. After months of this they gave us a $100 credit and 1 email about it. They transitioned it to a new teacher who was really dependable. They told my daughter they "thought we would place in top 10, like 6 or Better” My daughter is type of person who latches onto that so when they didn't place, she felt it more Than needed. It was clear her time at park district (McFeteridge) brought out waaaaay more talent and she grew waaaay more there and the routine was better. Great artistry from Dovetail tho. Teachers were nice. They txtd us during paid sessions they wanted to walk the kids to 7-11 instead of class time. The other families were nice and we vibed with them- not competitive etc. did pizza with them couple times over year. my wife took a class at dovetail for adults and loved it. My daughter had classes (not completion) that went well and she really loved all the teachers.

My 12 yo is loving the instructors and fellow students. In the last 2 1/2 years her technique and skills and confidence have increased tenfold. Jazz hands for Dovetail! My 3 children are so happy here. The teachers are FANTASTIC - dynamic, caring, professional and full of positive energy. My family has danced at Dovetail for the past 8 years and I couldn't be happier with the expertise, creativity and supportive environment created by the team there. My daughter will be starting her third year on the competition team which has been a wonderful experience for her. Her growth- both in technique and love of dance- has been beautiful to watch. The directors and instructors strike the right balance between hard work, fun and positivity. I purchased a ticket to attend a dance performance at Dovetail. I wish I could say it was a great performance, however I did not get the chance to see it. I arrived a few minutes late, however the event information did not include that late arrivals were not permissible. Definitely my fault, but I did not experience the best event management best practices from this studio. The owner did not even apologize or offer a partial discount or anything. I'm sure the performances are great, but be aware that you have to show up on time, as I believe their staff capacity is limited and they most likely don't have the resources to give you a refund thereafter.

We had our daughter's rainbow princess ballet 4th birthday party at Dovetail last weekend and still can't get over how absolutely perfect it was! Ms. Andrea taught a 45-minute dance lesson to 18 3 to 5 year olds while the grownups socialized in the comfy lobby. We then had 45 minutes to do a dance party with all the guests, eat a birthday treat, and run around the studio with balloons, scarves, and tutus. Everyone had such a great time! Dovetail was super responsive, provided all the tables and benches, and created a warm, inviting space for families to enjoy. A HUGE thank you to Andrea and Joanna for hosting!

I've been member of the flamenco dance community for 40+ years, working with many of our local dance spaces and directors. Our long time flamenco studio closed causing me to search for dance space that accepts flamenco dancers. I've rented space at Dovetail Studios since 2017 and have enjoyed working with Joanna and Rachel. They believe strongly in the performing arts and do everything possible to promote dance and physical well-being. My daughter enjoyed taking hip hop with Miss Sasha. In mid session the studio was able to switch to an online forum due to the pandemic which enabled my daughter to keep dancing. They even held a virtual recital.

My daughter also attended summer camps here. Given the Covid restrictions the studio and staff handled everything very well. She had a great time especially with theater camp. It was one of her highlights this summer.

My friend recommended this studio and I'm glad I followed her recommendation. I currently take the adult "basic ballet" class because I have some knowledge of the terminology/proper form from my high school days. If you are a complete beginner, I would suggest taking the "beginner ballet" class instead. Emily Stein teaches the adult ballet classes and is a fantastic teacher. She is not only extremely knowledgable, but is great at explaining the proper forms for each move. She uses a combination of imagery and mnemonic devices to help you learn. She makes sure to focus on all parts of the body, including arms, head, legs, feet, toes, back, and neck to make sure you are learning the moves properly. I thought I knew a great deal about basic ballet moves, but I was wrong! I currently drive 40 minutes from the suburbs just to take this class because its THAT worth it. Despite being in the city, the studio has plenty of free street parking. As a bonus - the classes are extremely affordable compared to most other dance studios. As a side note - I was told that they have a great work study program, although you will have to call the studio to inquire about this.

I have attended several of the performances by Same Planet Performance Project, the professional company at Dovetail Studios. Their Artistic Director, Joanna, owns Dovetail Studios. Dovetail studio has been a gift to the Northwest side of the city. When I moved here 3 years ago I was struggling to try to find a place to dance as most of the dance studios were a 30+ min drive for me. As a seasoned dancer I wanted a studio where I could feel welcome as an older dancer at my own pace but still feel challenged. After many years of not dancing it is such a joy to find a place I can feel cared for, get my strength and stamina back as a dancer and have fun in a non-competitive and nurturing environment.

Birthday Party

We had a SuperHero/Ballet themed dance party for our 4 year old and a mixed group of boys and girls. The studio was very accomidating!

Rachel- the teacher- was AMAZING and kept the kids enthralled. Her classroom managment was unparrelled. The class was smoother than a lot of dance classes where the teacher has been working with the students for multiple weeks!

THINGS TO KNOW

1. There were a few hiccups with the party offerings. We were supposed to have white plates, napkins, and bottled water for the kids supplied by the studio so we did not bring those things. However, they did not have them on hand and it was a bit of a hiccup to get them (never did get bottled water). If we had known this going in we could have just brought our own. But if that is the only thing that goes wrong on a kids birthday party count yourself lucky.

2. Make sure you bring all essentials from the cake cutter to the candles to a lighter as they don't have these supplies on hand.

3. Be prepared to manage things yourself -- this isn't a party factory where they pack up your gifts for you etc. They will help setup the space as you want it and clean up after but the vision is yours!

Overall- they are eager to please and the class was great. We were very happy and the space is a great size for a party. Additionally, the waiting area for the parents was big and they moved a table so we could have a place for the coffee we brought for the parents.

What's not to love about this place! Dovetail Studios offers a variety of classes, which are all, taught by both dance and fitness professionals. The three studios are huge therefore classes never feel overcrowded. As a retired dancer, I signed up for beginner ballet, after an auto accident. The instructor was extremely patient with me and allowed me to work at my own pace as I gained my strength back. My favorite thing is the community, the other students, the parents and the dance professionals. I always leave inspired.

I called the number on the door and a woman named Joanna was unbelievably helpful. She both helped me reserve the space for two hours and get into the building. She went above and beyond to accommodate me. So... recommended!!!

So grateful to have found this studio, and not just because it is close to our home. My 6 year old is in her 2nd full year of ballet here and I love how the classes evolve as they age. And if I may, Rachel (the class teacher) is the best! Looking forward to continuing with Dovetail and get our son enrolled when he’s ready!

Plus, if you’re looking for a great big open space to have a special event or party, they rent out they space. It’s awesome!

Wonderful studio, many nice rental spaces for rehearsals or private lessons, too! Friendly staff and interesting dance and fitness offerings! Free parking options in the area for those who drive. Also, great interaction with the larger surrounding community, which I admire.

Joanna and Kent are wonderful studio owners. Their instructors are top notch. Kate, Eddie, Edge and Will are fantastic. We've taken adult and kid classes here. And even hosted a hip hop birthday party. You won't find a more personal, welcoming fitness/dance studio on the Northside. When you come here, you feel like family.

Great neighborhood dance studio with something for everyone. The owner, Joanna, is super friendly and is always looking for feedback/suggestions to improve customer experience. I love how inclusive the studio is - everyone is made to feel welcome regardless of fitness level/ability. The main studio is an amazing space, and there are two additional studios. I love Dovetail Studios! For almost a year now I have been taking various fitness classes. The instructors are fantastic- always full of energy and some of the top performers in their field. I love how each class is structured the same, but with different content that works to tone and strengthen my body...most of the time without me even knowing it, as I'm having a blast. The studio itself is clean and accommodating for both fitness and dance classes alike. I can't recommend Dovetail enough!

I love Dovetail! Joanna's Modern Intermediate class is excellent, especially for someone like me who loves dance but does not have that much training. She makes me feel welcome, supported and encouraged. My posture is better overall and my dance technique has greatly improved.. Most importantly for me, getting to class at Dovetail is one of the highlights of my week as it is so fun and makes my body feel good. Buti Yoga was a lot of fun as well! It is super easy to walk in and try a class or register for a series.

I am returning to dance after taking a break for years and Joanna and the Studio have been amazing and welcoming! I highly suggest coming in to try a fitness class and if you are unsure about the dance portion, sitting in on a class to see what it is all about. The staff and teachers are friendly and accommodating, and I feel like I have found a studio where I can spend hours doing something I was and still am so passionate about.

Love having Dovetail in the neighborhood! I hadn't participated in organized fitness classes in years, but quickly became addicted after trying a 10 class pass. Variety of classes is great, instructors are fantastic, and owners are friendly and accommodating. They also have great party space. My daughter had a hip hop birthday party there. It was super easy and kids had a blast. Definitely try this place!

The owner and the staff at Dovetail are truly wonderful and very accommodating. They love dance and fitness, are passionate but most importantly they want you to love dance and fitness. The studio space is huge and gorgeous and my daughter and myself have had great instructors.
