Her we go again, arrived at the YMCA at 0450 and departed at 0515 with the facility still closed
Why is it the other area YMCAs can open on time but the east belleville ymca can't? We pay for a service and can't use that service, why? Please help your members!

East Belleville YMCA offers a great range of community-centered programs, especially for kids. Their before/after school and summer programs are clearly a strong focus, and it’s great to see those needs being met.
I signed up for a trial to see if the $49/month membership would meet my personal fitness goals. The gym area has a decent selection of equipment covering most muscle groups, with multiple free weights, squat racks, and dumbbells. The only thing noticeably missing was equipment for lateral raises.
While the machines are a bit older, that’s not a big deal—as long as maintenance is kept up. Some machines had rusted weight pins that were hard to use, and a few benches had torn padding. Simple fixes like lubrication and upholstery repair would really improve the experience and bring the gym up to par with other fitness centers.
Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Overall, a good option—especially for families or those looking for more than just a gym.

I sent my child to a one week camp during 4th of July week, so he only went 4 days. Day one of camp, I was told he had a rough morning. The teacher told me that she was just thrown in the room and did not know what she was doing, which to a 6 year old is prime time to get into what 6 year olds get into when there is no structure. She was extremely sweet though and I felt for her as I am also an educator and I know what kids are capable of when you don't have experience and/or have a plan. The second day was ok, however, when I picked my child up for the 3rd day they had a write up. Background knowledge, my child loves rocks and collects them, which I don't expect any of the counselors to know that. Anyhow, I was told another kid told one of the counselors that my child had rocks in their pocket and my child was told to put the rocks down and this upset my child. I was told it took him a few minutes to calm down. I don't know how that requires a write up but was told by one of the directors, who at times spoke over me and seemed like he could care less, that if a child needs time to calm down or if it takes one of the teachers away from a group then thats a problem and that he was not there so he doesn't know what happened. I was also told that there are two directors over the camps, and that there are 2 groups. Why wasn't one of them available to help so that the teacher can be where they need to be? I also know that there are very young teenagers and very young adults running these camps and you really only learn through hands on experiences. However, they need to have proper training. They need to be able to deescalate, to have conflict-resolution skills and how to be developmentally appropriate with smaller children. Like I stated earlier, I understand my child cannot have rocks, but the way in which it was handled was not ok and it escalated for the simple reason that, there are young teens and adults managing a lot of very young children without what seems to be, when speaking to the counselor who interacted with my child, the proper training. The YMCA says that it inclusive, but it seems that they are only inclusive if your child just sits, is quiet and does nothing. The director I spoke to said they are inclusive and began to bring up children that have IEP's. That is not the only way you are inclusive. How about the children that may just need a little more patience, or someone who takes a few seconds to acknowledge, validate and just listen for a second. I don't know a six year who is going to do something the first time you ask every single time. We don't even do that as adults. If the YMCA is going to have summer camp and say that all are welcome, then they need to make sure they are equipped and properly trained with procedures in place for all the children, not just the ones with IEP's. This is something that I am paying for, so I expect a little bit more. I even offered my services for free as I am off during the summer to help coach the young counselors or to just be an extra body to help some of the students who may just need that little extra amount of understanding, which is something we all could use. Needless to say, I will be finding other alternatives for my child.

Take those hoops out the gym. Repaint the hardwood floors as an indoor soccer, tennis, or volleyball area. I’ve seen every sport but basketball get played in that gym. I came here for a week straight and wasn’t able to at least shoot around. One of those days they stopped playing volleyball around 8:45. I wanted to shoot around just for the last hour before the closed but they shut the gym down. They had the door closed with the lights off. I normally wouldn’t care about something this minuscule, but I only started coming here because I seen a basketball court in the photos, and it’s the closest gym to my house.

It was a mess. The room wasn't ready when we came. Waited for tables and chairs. Then we were told the children had to swim first, but the food was ready and the presents to be opened. So there was no time to swim. Children were disappointed. Some things should have been clarified before hand. I think that the money should be refunded to the birthday boys parents.

PARENTS MUST READ !!!
Took my 2 year old and 4 month old in. My 2 year old was left to cry in the back of the room with 0 comfort and my 4 month old was left in his car seat the whole time with 2 other young children touching his face and breathing all over him. There were only 3 other kids in the room too and it’s a small facility, so it’s not like they didn’t see them. I was so upset by the treatment of my kids, I left after 20 minutes. Thankfully I used a guest pass for the day, but because of this I will NOT become a member. I literally never leave reviews, but this experience has left me so infuriated I felt the need to warn other parents. Go somewhere else!!

I'm not gonna lie, the lifeguards are cool but the place has one unprofessional staff member who has orange hair color. Very poorly managed, sad because most of the staff are excellent! Tired of management changing rules for my poor kids, sending away without any notice to the new rule #50 of the year. This place is definitely clean, the staff are always working on some aspect of cleaning every time I am there. The layout of the facility is good, however for a gym, there aren't many water fountains. My 1 complaint is that the floor isn't completely level in the cardio part. The floor slopes which can be treacherous for people with unsteady gait.
Staff is extremely helpful and friendly, willing to go out of their way to help out.

I love taking group classes at the YMCA! You will have to figure out which classes and instructors are the best fit for you and your schedule. Try something new each week! People are super friendly, supportive, and helpful. I love going to the Y!
Constructive Criticism
I wish that some of the classes and more of the classes would be offered earlier in the morning especially during the school year for the working folks that start between 5:30 and 6:30, and they would have two different classes back to back so you could alternate between cardio and strength/piyo/yoga. I feel that you should do an interest survey to find out what classes are wanted and what times people would go.
I don’t have kids, but if you have classes early in the morning you should have child care 15 minutes before the class starts so people can get set up or let the older kids play games in the gym or have some open gyms with basketball or volleyball. Also, I would add questions about when child care is needed on the survey. I feel like you’re family memberships would go up if you offered more activities and opportunities for kids.

The facility is nice and the staff were professional and helpful. We were extremely disappointed in the conditions the kids experience during the summer camp, though. The kids stay outside the majority of the day in the heat in open-sided tents with no air conditioning. They have to use porta-pottys outside and are not allowed to use the restrooms inside. There was no option for (provided) lunch or snacks. Themed weeks were published in the schedule but there were no themed activities conducted at all. The kids had to change into their swimming clothes in the same area, at the same time that adults were changing. Absolutely unacceptable practices in so many areas! We will not be coming back.
Parents: Check out other options in the area before you make a decision on summer camp at this YMCA.

I started my Y journey 3 years ago when my daughter decided she wanted to play volleyball. We were spending so much time there between practices and games we decided to join! Our family slowly became a little more active which lead into a complete change of my way of life. I lost 65 pounds! I could not have done it without encouraging friends, we found a great community to be a part of and with my new confidence I decided to apply for a job opening. I’ve now been a Y employee for a little over a year! I still attend regular classes and enjoy all of our member challenges. My daughter is going strong in volleyball with the same core group of girls, they are currently on their 9th season together! East Belleville is our second home and we love our Y family.

I had been away from the gym for almost a year because of some health issues. The end of October I was able to return to the gym but was not sure where to start. I decided to get a personal trainer to help. Best decision I have ever made. I soon realized David pushed me to do more than I thought I could do which is what I needed. He never gave up on me which made me more determined not to give up on myself. He talks with me about my diet and gives great suggestions on how I can improve. I have started to feel good about myself for the first time in a very long time. I never thought I could look the way I do now. I have loss 22lbs. I still have my personal trainer and he continues to push me to become better and I can’t thank him enough.

I’ve had to many unnecessary bad experiences w/the Y. The lastest was today, 2/11/19 I was in Sprint class and the instructor made it her business to alert me of a rule in class, that you CAN NOT wear your headphones while participating in a workout class. That is thee most mind blowing thing I’ve ever heard.
There’s no sign that says no electronic in class, my headphones was physically on my head but my music wasn’t playing. Even if I did choose to listen to my own music. That’s my right, as long as I’m not interrupting or disrupting the class. I explained to her that my music wasn’t on and what difference did it make? She said, “if your headphones are on, then you can’t hear me!” I replied, that’s not true at all. I can have my music at a certain volume and still be attentive. She’ seem to get offended bcuz of my reply. Then she stated, “ she didn’t really care, it’s just the rule here.” If she didn’t care, why make me aware? The instructor at the Y need a refresher course on how to talk to adults. I pay to attend the Y, it’s not free. Should know one experience this type of treatment and behavior. It’s simple unacceptable!
I went and spoke to a Supervisor, he’s mentioned that he wasn’t aware of the rule.
Hmm, makes you wonder!! Then the Supervisor felt the need to elaborate, and give examples of how he can understand the rule as well.
“The RULE” that he’s not aware.
He eleborated so much on the examples, I could barely get a word in.
Although he said, he will “look into it”.
I’m pretty confident that this issue will go unresolved as the others. I also informed him on the numerous complaints/comments card that I submitted about the unnecessary mishaps of the Y. He stated he hasn’t received any. I know for a fact myself and another member has submitted plenty. Maybe, she left that’s why I haven’t seen her in a while.
It’s definitely unfortunate because I really like and enjoy Sprint.
I also witness something that rubbed me the wrong way w/ another instructor. While in Body Pump, it was a guy that wanted to come in and just Sprint at his own pace. Now, mind you BODY PUMP was taking place on the opposite side of the room. The instructor told him he couldn’t do that. Why??? You mean to tell me, that a person that pays to attend the Y, can’t come in and freely use a workout bike? Unbelievable!!

My husband went to the gym for a workout in the afternoon. After his run, he went back to the locker room where he discovered that the keys to our jeep were missing. He went out to the front desk and noticed that our jeep was gone. The person at the front desk allowed a non member in (without taking down his name/picture of his ID) to 'pick up his kid from camp.' The guy that they let into the gym, cut the lock off the locker and took the keys and stole our jeep.
Since then, I've contacted the corporate office and asked on their non member policy, etc. They had told me that in order for a non member to be allowed into the gym, they have to take down their name/copy of their ID. This process didn't happen. I spoke with the manager of the gym and he compared it to "things get stolen out of here all the time, like folders and backpacks." He had also claimed that the Y isn't responsible for this.
They are lucky that it was a jeep that was stolen and he didn't kidnap a child at day camp. They didn't follow their own established policy in this situation whether the non member was picking a kid up or not. We strongly believe that this could have been easily prevented if they had simply did their job and followed their own process/policy.

I really enjoy this Y. Occasionally the weight and cardio areas can be quite crowded, but there is enough space to still train, regardless of how many patrons are there. Most of the staff is friendly and smiling. All around nice place to be.

This "Y" is without any tension, Jezebels, and other uncomfortable common issues or people found in other Ys. You can get a decent workout without any hassle (with or without your kids). The staff is accomodating and that makes it worth it all. The other members that come there are decent people too. Two thumbs up definitely.
