This gym is less than ideal. Though it’s clean enough, the upkeep in general is lacking. Machines sport plenty of duct tape, out of order signs and cracked plastic panels. In the upper weight room, patrons on the weight machines tend to plant themselves and stare at their phones. There seems to be no in-gym supervision. The amenities in the locker room are less than ideal, the showers and the steam rooms sport debris, hair and paper towels on the floors and clogging the drains. Cracked tiles and stained wood make for an unpleasant experience. It’s absolutely a functioning place to work out, but at the price point there are dozens of other gyms that pay more attention to the experience and enjoyment of its patrons.

My initial sign on included a Peloton membership initially, this has since been rescinded.

Disappointing Membership Policy – Lack of Transparency

I signed up for a membership at YMCA Irving Park on June 30th. That same day, $53 was charged to my card. Then, on July 1st, another $100 was charged for the July membership. While I understand and accept the charge for July, I find it unfair and disappointing that I was also charged $53 for just one single day—June 30th—especially considering I didn’t even use any of the facilities that day.

It’s frustrating that this policy wasn’t clearly communicated when I signed up. Why aren’t front desk staff informing new members that they will be charged for the a portion month, even if they join on the last day? Basically, I was charged for a portion of June, even though I became a member at the very end of the month. This lack of transparency left a bad first impression. I hope YMCA considers improving how they explain billing practices to avoid similar disappointments for others.

the opening and closing of the pool is worse than my own mood swings. Each day is like gambling to see whether I get to swim or not since they always tend to have an excuse to close the pool. They can’t keep the pool open for a solid week without having an issue with it. Total waste of time and money.

I’m only speaking regarding the summer day camp. I have seen the facilities and it’s typical YMCA, showing some age and some updates as well. It is kept very clean despite the age of the facility. The room where the summer camp enters and does some of the activities is very messy and unorganized. Not to where it’s hazardous, it’s more of the aesthetic but it can feel overwhelming to some kids with sensory issues. The staff are very nice and accommodating. My son feels more at home here than he does at his school as there is a lot more diversity. It’s great that he can be somewhere all day and not feel like an outsider because of his skin color. The program is good and there is variety during the week. I realize the Y doesn’t have the same resources as some other institutions, so I don’t expect more than I should. I do find it a bit concerning that the facility also has housing for male transients. The entrance is separate, but you always get some of the residents who break rules and do things like smoke outside and curse up a storm when the kids are letting out for the day.

Came to visit. Really wanted to like this location but it’s just meh. Pro: Staff was very friendly and kind (they’ve always been) but god - the members here are so rude! No one says thank you or excuse me and are on their phones and entitled. Maybe it’s just the day - it’s a gloomy Chicago day but I’d rather make a further drive to the other YMCAs in the area as the community members there are more down to earth and welcoming. Not a great impression here at the at Irving Park location!

This is a lovely, all purpose facility, where my family can enjoy a lot of the amenities. They have multiple basketball courts, a great workout center, childcare for us, parents with young kids, and a swimming pool downstairs. This is an older building, but I am so glad I have joined.

The schedules and services are constantly changing with no update to members in the app or online specifically the open swim schedule. The pool was closed for training and no contact was sent to members or signage posted in the facility. The second time I called to confirm the pool schedule and was given the wrong hours. The communication is very inconsistent across departments.

As a long time member I’m constantly disappointed by the misinformation I receive by the front desk staff regarding scheduling for family programming at this ymca and it has been this way for several years through any leadership changes.

This YMCA is one of the worst I’ve been to. The building is old and not well-maintained, but the real issue is the lack of care from the staff. They’re often unhelpful and don’t seem to care. The weight room smells bad sometimes. I reported a broken equipment almost 4 weeks ago—still no fix. It’s clear they don’t value customer experience. I wouldn’t recommend this place at all.

06-08-22 - 8 weeks in, the Y has been fantastic, managing to make it 3 or 4 days a week, already lost 10 lbs. and feeling more fit every week.
Thanks YMCA.
04-08-22 - Signed up for Silver sneakers and was very surprised to find out that I will receive complete use of the entire facilities including parking for free. Humana thru Part C of Medicare is taking care of the fees, the only requirement is that I must use the service 7 times a month.
WOW, THAT'S AMAZING. Will update in a few weeks.

I recently dropped a lot of money to begin my membership here ($120, which is how much a year-long membership to Planet Fitness would cost), and I was willing to overlook the steep $56/month membership fees because this place ALLEGEDLY has a pool, and a steam room/sauna. There is no hot tub/whirlpool tub despite what the signs say. Guess it was removed. I say this place “allegedly” has a pool, because I have yet to see it with my own eyes. Not for lack of trying though! The door has been locked every time I’ve been here. You ask the employees about it and they hand you a pool schedule. According to the pool schedule, it’s only open a couple of hours out of the day to the members, which to me is ridiculous. It would be one thing if it was being used by a swim team or something during these gaps in availability, but there is a huge 4 hour gap from 11 AM to 3 PM every day (which is around when i usually come) where it’s just not being used by anyone. The people at the front desk said lifeguard availability could be a factor, but the question still remains: why am I paying $56 a month for access to a pool that I don’t even actually have access to? How small is this pool to where they can’t section off a lane for people to swim in? I feel like a Karen complaining about this (and to be clear none of these complaints are directed towards the staff members that i spoke to), but it’s hard not to feel ripped off when I could get a year-long membership to a gym without a pool for the price I paid to begin my membership here. Just let me use the pool I’m paying to use!!

Our family stopped by for a tour recently and instantly felt welcomed by the staff. The facility is bright with historic touches. I personally find a lot of fitness centers to feel too expansive and overwhelming. The size and layout of this Y feels cozy but isn’t at all crowded, even on a Saturday morning. Leilanie guided us throughout the facility and was thorough in answering any questions we had. She made us feel at ease and like we already belonged to the Y. We weren’t planning on signing up right away when we initially set out to tour but ended up getting a family package. We are all excited to reach our health and community goals with the help of this Y. Thanks for a warm welcome, Leilanie and everyone we encountered!

Whoever is handling the websites for the Irving Park location and the general Metropolitan website is doing a very poor job. I am trying to determine the membership costs and benefits. I am told benefits are things like "a positive environment"... LOL... who wrote this? That's great, but I want to know if membership includes swim time for laps or if I have to pay extra. When trying to determine the price of membership... I am told you have a whole bunch of categories like adult, senior, etc. But I am NOT told what age you qualify for senior or how much ANY of the categories cost. To proceed... I clicked "begin membership" hoping it would actually answer these questions. But that button just takes me to a page where I have to create an account. Why on earth would I create an account for something I don't know if I want? Nowhere on your website could I find an actual description of member benefits OR the price of membership. Why would I proceed any further? There are millions of people in Chicago. Certainly you can find someone to hire who could figure out that a website should provide this basic information and that your website is all fluff and no substance. Nobody has incentive to create an account just to find out whether they want or can afford what you offer. Whoever is in a position to oversee this ridiculousness should be fired. Hire someone who knows how to create an informative site filled with information not meaningless fluff. Needless to say I won't be joining because the website does not tell me how much membership costs, whether I qualify for senior or just adult, whether membership allows me to swim laps or if I have to pay extra, and finally... having found the pool schedule... it is horrible. The only adult laps end before 7am? There are no afternoon laps... And the entire evening is devoted to a swim team for the entire week. No variety of hours for people with different schedules. Terrible planning. I don't like leaving negative reviews and usually only go online to leave good reviews. But I am taking the time to do this so you can hopefully improve not just the website but the horribly rigid swim schedule. I will take a look next year and reconsider at that time. For now I will drive outside the area to a facility that meets my needs.

Really disappointed with our experience with the Y, especially because we wanted to love it. Pricing is very reasonable, it's wonderful that so many community members use and enjoy the facility, and they did some lovely renovations with the aquatics department. However, we found that the communication with the staff to be incredibly frustrating and woefully inconsistent. We were pretty disappointed with the skills of our swimming instructor, though there were some very good teachers there. When our toddler's session ended, my husband asked at the front desk if he needed to do anything else, since we weren't going to do another session. He was told by the staff that, no, there was nothing else needed and that our daughter would simply not be re-enrolled in classes. That was not the case, though, and we didn't realize we continued to be charged for months. When the error was discovered, a staff member said she would try to get us a refund. By miles, she was the most helpful person we encountered at the Y. Admin said no, however, and wouldn't even meet us halfway. They said it was our fault and that we had to put our cancellation in writing, even though the desk staff told my husband the exact opposite. They couldn't even be bothered to respond to my email when I asked if there was any flexibility. There was absolutely no accountability on their end for what the staff member told us or the fact that they had messed up. Regrettably, I don't think we'll be going back any time soon.

I've been a member at many gyms around the city and I have to say this Y is just the perfect amount of everything! We have a family membership and my kids like the sports activities, and open gym times. I love the workout classes and the weight room. Shoutout to Erica the Body Pump and Cycling Instructor! She welcomes me with a smile, even if I'm a few minutes late and is easy to follow while providing a great workout. The cycling class on Saturday morning is like a party! Great playlists and an awesome new cycling studio. Round it all out with a steam room/sauna session and it makes for such a great start to the weekend. I have a workout bike at home and use a popular cycling app (rhymes with Schmeleton) but there is just something about a real live class with real live people. Plus, the front desk staff is super awesome and it makes me feel good to be part of the Y community. Thanks IPY!

The YMCA building seems like a converted apartment, so there are a lot of confusing stairways and narrow hallways to navigate, depending on where you go. I used the womens only swimming pool, whichs near the back end and basement of the building. It was a private swim event, so not too crowded ofc. There was a YMCA instructor who was very helpful teaching us swimming basics and the lifeguard was also quick to act and helpful when i swam too far into the deep end. The pool itself was great, but only one stair entry point. There was alot, ALOT of floating equipment which is good for people's use. The water is salt water, so its easier to float and doesn't reek of chlorine. But it's obv not as clear as chlorinated water. Its warm, but there is a fan overhead the shallow end so when you get out, you get cold quickly. There's a large locker space and about 8 showers, so you better claim it quickly. There's also a sauna. Its all really old and kinda roughed up, but mostly clean.

I’ll give a few stars for good location and cleanliness, but overall quite disappointing. Limited equipment and opportunities for open swim. It’s very obvious that this Location prioritizes ad hoc opportunities to make money rather than focusing on their current routine customers. Also, don’t rely on their schedules—they are either not up to date or misleading, especially the swim schedule. Not worth the price at all.

I just joined this gym and it is good. One thing I would request is longer hours they close early every day; 830p on week day, 7p on Friday, and 3pm on weekends. If they can extend it an hour or 2 it would be great for those who also work and trying to manage health.
Equipment- it has mostly everything you need. The building is a bit older. The first floor is fine, but the weightroom on the ground floor has a slight odor of mildew and old water, but if you wear a mask you should be good. Some days or better than others. The weight room has extensive options which is good.
Staff- it is a hit or miss. When I first visited I wanted to do a trial workout but the lady wanted me to sign up for a membership first, which I have not heard of. Sometimes they are polite, and sometimes they're not. I just keep my headphone on and pretty much focus on what I came to the gym for, which is to work out. No need to start a workout off thinking about rude staff member.

Overall it is a solid 2/10 For the pricing and access it's not bad, but it could be better. I cannot speak much on the fitness classes since I have not been to them, but overall they seem to be a good change of pace based on the one class I attended.

UPDATED REVIEW
after the prior review yes they did “increase hours” by 30 minutes weekday but they also increased the rates by about $10 a month with no new equipment And NOW the front staff like Angie and whoever else works with her turn off the lights before the gym is technically closed. It was ridiculous when I was running treadmill and it was 6:55pm and they shut OFF ALL the lights basically pitch back. If I fell or tripped this would have been bad. The front desk were rude when I approached them other staff have also turned off the lights before 10-15 min before closing. Don’t come to this gym. (btw I still left before 7p)

Still looks like a nice place. I was burned by new sunlamps in pool area in Feb.1966 have had skin issues all my life. Also nice to see gym with track is still there. I noticed lowest rail on track safety fence still in place.
Lowest rail was added in 1966 after my friend buddy stusse was triped and flew under rail to hit gym floor below. He was disabled rest of his life. This in spring of that year. we where 8 @ the time. Thankfully safety has improved we rode to the Y in cars with steel dashboards and no seat belts. Car seats for kids did not exist,
You just hung on. Its a different world.

I love the Irving Park YMCA. Staff is so friendly and helpful. The historic building it's in has so much Chicago charm! It has everything you might need in a gym. Highly recommend.

Signed up for Silver Sneakers. Great class. Instructor gives clear instructions. Staff is friendly. Facilities are cleaned regularly to help prevent cross contamination. I also used the treadmill and weights.

I love this YMCA, it's a staple of the Irving park community. The front desk workers are always super friendly and helpful. The teachers of the classes are also great. Tons of machines for working out as well. I wish they had more availability for adult lap swim but otherwise, stellar establishment.

Avoid interacting with the membership director and supervisor. They are stuck up and rude if you're not Hispanic.

The staff is polite and very friendly. I am a resident. I also enjoy working out in the gym. It is like i have a whole gym in my basement. The equipment, locker rooms, and showers are cleaned daily. I recommend joining the gym and if you do not mind living alone in a small(but comfortable) room then sign up.
Best of Luck
Anthony

Front desk supervisors could be more polite. I think Paulina is one of them shes the meanest. Facility is pretty nice and everyone is nice but rough to walk in and first person you interact with is a grinch.

Excellent!
As a youngster, I learned how to swim at the Southside YMCA. Still swimming about 5 days per week at the age of 67.
The Y has all kinds of activities for people from a young age thru old age.
Employees at the Y are professional and go out of their way to be of assistance.
I love going to the Y. You will, too.
Sincerely yours,
Bart Wurtzebach
