Nice to see the changing rooms , restrooms, steam room area very clean. I would compliment Raul on doing a really good job. Nice to see a person taking pride in their work.

Look, I understand a gym is a place full of sweat and smells. I have been in gyms since I was 15. But dear god this location REAKS and not of sweat, but of mold. I am highly allergic and within 15 min of being here my throat and air passage ways started to become hard to manage. I have been coming to this location on and off since it was an x sport. But the last year this place has tanked. And this is supposed to serve the clientele of gold coast and old town??!! Please someone get an inspector in this building and force them to clean it.

Never in my lifetime have I witnessed a business decline so significantly. I actually signed up at XSport Fitness over 20 years ago at this location -- before it opened. I also met the original founder, Steve Raymond. The place has become an absolute dump. Broken air conditioning and DIRTY. They don't wipe the equipment so you leave with dirt all over your hands. The patrons also have declined as well. Very ghetto. Earlier today, someone asked me how the sink in the men's room worked as he didn't notice it wasn't automatic and there was a manual handle.

LA Fitness is a case study on how not to run a business. There's a reason why this gym has so many one star ratings. It appears the customer service is nonexistent. I went in today to cancel my membership and was told only the operations manager could do it. Thats fine, but turns out he's only in 9-5 M-F, which isn't convenient for anyone who has an actual job. I asked Steven, the front desk associate, if he could leave a note for the operations manager to cancel it when he's in. Steven literally laughed in my face and said "the operations manager won't do that.. your membership is a base level promotion and only 20/month" and proceeded to imply because it's a base level membership no staff member will be compelled to provide any amount of customer service. When I asked to speak to the general manager, Gabriel, thinking certainly I'd get someone who is more reasonable and professional, turns out I got a nearly identical response. Beats me why you'd even pay a general manager when it seems nothing is actually being managed. The manager's suggestion was, I kid you not: "cancel your credit card." So basically, it seems if you have a base level membership be prepared for no service, and even if you have the most expensive membership they offer.. also be prepared to for no service. For example, there are multiple instances my friends (who have also since cancelled) have gone to work out and the gym has literally been closed in the morning because people just don't show up to open the gym. It's pretty pointless to even write this review, since it seems obvious LA fitness staff, including the GM, don't really care about customer feedback or the level of service they provide (if any). So this is more a warning for all of my neighbors to go to literally any other gym. Really miss XSport.

8/21/25 Update: Guess I'm not the only one with this complaint... FTC (Federal Trade Commission) is suing LA Fitness over it's cancellation policy: "When people appear in person to cancel their memberships, the suit alleges that LA Fitness complicates the process by enacting a policy that states only one employee is allowed to process cancellations. If that employee is not available, they can not cancel, despite multiple employees being authorized to sign people up for memberships. These employees typically work the same hours as the average American during the day, making it difficult for customers to arrive at the gym when the necessary employee is present, the complaint says."

Sooo warm they still haven’t gotten the temp under control even tho it’s been all summer. It smells really bad in there ;/ There’s never any dumbbells bw 15-35 lbs avail bc the trainers take them to the trainer cage and don’t bring them back, people never rerack their weights, and cherry on top is someone left a note on the mirrors saying there’s cameras in the women’s bathrooms. Idkkk I still go bc there’s no other gyms around but it’s actually worst gym ever lol

Timings of the gym is disgusting, why the gym closed by 7pm on fri sat sun. LA management don't have this common sense people are busy in busy hours. They open on busy hours where people don't come. This is gym not any business office so that gym is open only on busy hours. When it's was xsport I was 24hrs open.

This LA Fitness location is unsafe, unsanitary, and unprofessional. The bathrooms reek of urine and are never cleaned, the facility is overcrowded and poorly maintained, and there is no air conditioning — I’ve witnessed members collapse from the heat. Customer service is abysmal; front desk staff ignore members, and fitness class sales reps are relentlessly predatory, spamming calls and texts. The conditions here present clear health, safety, and liability risks. Until management addresses these issues, I strongly recommend taking your business elsewhere.

I don't understand what the bad reviews are about. This is an old Xsport fitness bought by LA fitness. This is a very busy gym and for good reason - it is a very well equipped gym considering its location. They have all the equipment I need including a wooden board. No gym is perfect and this gym has some issues - all the equipment is old and warn out and they need better restrooms.

Has to be one of the worst gyms in Chicago. The place looks abandoned while still somehow operating. No natural light, zero cell service. I’m pretty sure their AC doesn’t work or they just choose not to run it, so there’s just fans everywhere but everyone is sweating over all the equipment and not cleaning it. Pool has been closed for a long time, completely dirty and moldy in the basement.

Extremely Disappointing Experience

This facility is consistently stuffy, overheated, and poorly ventilated. THE AIR CONDITIONING FAILS FOR DAYS AT A TIME, MAKING THE ENVIRONMENT NEARLY UNBEARABLE. Locker rooms are poorly maintained and often reek of mildew and body odor. Bathrooms are filthy, unsanitary, and rarely cleaned to a basic standard. Much of the equipment is outdated, grime-covered, or nonfunctional.

Beyond the physical issues, there’s a noticeable lack of accountability and poor customer service. Complaints are met with dismissiveness, and the general attitude of managers and staff reflects a troubling disregard for member comfort or safety.

If you're looking for a clean, functional, and respectful environment—this isn’t it.

It's got everything you need but its also not well maintained. Equipment is well-worn and in need of some rehab, and if you're lifting weights you are going to need to scrounge for plates. Tons of cardio equipment. That said, it's good enough.

The fact that this place has even 3 stars is baffling to me. This place is disgusting. Everything is broken. Staff does not care to address complaints. They were closed this week due to excessive heat (which they knew was coming because of the weather forecast). I have asked them several times when they are planning on fixing their AC (first complaint was in April). Every time I ask someone (front desk, corporate, or through the app) they tell me they're "working on it" which I now believe was a blatant lie. I submitted ANOTHER complaint about the AC this week, and asked for a two month refund (this would only cost them $90 which I now believe they don't even have since they're too cheap to invest in literally anything). The response I received was that the closure was due to "unforeseen circumstances" so they cannot offer me a refund. They're telling me they couldn't have predicted that in late June it would be too hot for them to be open with NO WORKING AC???? Like are you KIDDING ME??? Anyone with a working brain knows that it gets hot in the summer....how is this an unforeseen circumstance? I implore anyone looking to join this gym to LOOK ELSEHWERE. And I implore members of this gym to complain LOUDLY. Paying customers deserve basic human treatment. I will be cancelling my membership as this place has horrible customer service and does not seem to care about the basic safety and health of their members. LA Fitness is a disgusting corporation that should be shut down.

I don’t like leaving bad reviews, let alone reviews in general, but this can’t be left unreviewed.

LA fitness - what on EARTH are you guys doing? Do any of you at the facility, in management, in corporate have any functional brain cells?

You have been closed since Friday 6/20 and left a piece of paper stating you’d reopen Monday @ noon. Terrible communication, but fine- we all understand the need for repairs and maintenance. Show up Monday afternoon - still closed. Show up today - still closed and now there’s not even a sign.

WHERE is the communication or transparency? You are leading members to travel to the gym just to realize it is still closed, without ANY expectations on when it’ll reopen?

You guys can’t even do the god damn bare minimum.

I’m at a loss for words at this point. I’ve never experienced a more poorly run gym, or even place. I hope to see more incoming negative reviews as the reputation crumbles.

I joined this gym before it was bought out by LA Fitness. I was able to snag a great deal - $500 for two years. Given that this isn't the greatest gym, this price tag made sense. Now, this deal no longer exists because it was bought out by LA Fitness - ok fine, but zero improvements to the gym have been made to justify LA's price tag. It's actually gotten worse, if that's possible?

What I've always disliked about LA Fitness (I was a member pre Covid) is their lack of communication. This location has been closed for a few days because the AC is out. How do all members discover this information? By going to the gym to be greeted with a sign at the front door. Why is there zero email communication?? Why is this info not on the app?? Insane. Don't waste your money.

I am not picky at all with gyms, but this is the worst one I’ve ever been to. A third of the treadmills are broken at any given time, the AC is broken, wiping down machines is not encouraged/enforced, the place is cramped and grimy. The pool? Closed. The rock climbing wall? Closed. You do not receive any discounts for all of these issues or a portion of the gym not being accessible. It seems LA Fitness bought this location and have not put a SINGLE cent into it since — not even to change the sign outside. Unfortunately this location will continue to get business because it’s the only affordable gym in the area. If you can go a little further, do it and don’t waste your time here.

I would love to inform you all that as of January 1, 2025, the Physical Fitness Services Act Amendment has gone into effect. This states that gyms must provide a cancellation method online, within 10 days of the request (defined as any day which they are open, and they are open all days of the week). If they try to tell you to cancel in person or by mail, I highly encourage you to fill out an online complaint form with the Illinois Attorney General.

I emailed by gym to request cancellation on April 24, 2025. They responded April 29th informing me they "process membership changes either in person or by mail" (not email). They also state I should do this before May 19th because that is my billing date. I reply May 7, 2025 informing them of the Physical Fitness Services Act Amendment stating they must provide a cancellation method online, within 10 days of the request (defined as any day which they are open, and they are open all days of the week). That should have been May 4th, but at least by May 17th. I follow up on May 14 and May 17 after no response. They respond today, May 20th, one day after my monthly billing date, saying I have successfully cancelled. They blatantly waited until my billing date (illegally, it was 26 days after my initial email) and I'm livid! Reported to the attorney general.

Edit: i love how they only reply to five star reviews!

If I could rate it a zero I would. Gym hours have changed and now open at 5am. Showed up at 5:30a and there’s a line of people waiting to get in because NO staff showed up to open. Waited 15 mins and still no one! How are you an established gym and your staff are no shows on a weekday?

Outside of the unprofessionalism this is the nastiest gym in the area. Nothing is ever clean, half the machines don’t work, dumbbells are always missing and the basketball courts are always full of trash since no one sweeps.

Would never recommend anyone here.. avoid this place at all costs. Don’t let them trap you with the cheap price

Honest and Unbiased Review:

I have canceled my membership.

If you are just starting your fitness journey, this gym may serve as an entry point. However, you may find that you quickly outgrow its offerings. The affordable pricing makes it accessible, but this can sometimes result in a less focused environment due to the presence of individuals who may not share your commitment to fitness.

The facility is in need of maintenance, which is expected given the membership cost. Issues such as malfunctioning air conditioning or unpleasant odors from leaks are common. Additionally, there are frequent instances of equipment being out of order. The space could be excellent if better maintained.

Tyler, a member of the sales team, exemplifies what a sales representative should avoid. His interactions with customers are notably condescending, arrogant, and indifferent.

Despite these drawbacks, the gym earns two stars for its standout trainers, such as Kendall and Kersley, who offer excellent guidance. The friendly atmosphere among members also contributes positively, providing a welcoming environment for social interaction.

I have been a member at this gym for just under a year and would highly advise anyone to go anywhere else for their exercise needs if they are able to. Since LA Fitness took over last year (and doubled the price of membership) there have been zero (0) tangible upgrades to the gym. Everything is filthy and there is pretty much no effort to clean anything. The restrooms and locker rooms are disgusting, and the upstairs bathroom is practically unusable. The pool has been unavailable for the entire duration of my membership, but I am sure it will get fixed soon!

Regarding the weights/machines, I am surprised their printer hasn't run out of ink with all of the "out of service, awaiting repairs" signs that are all over the place. For the machines that actually do work, the numbers which designate how much weight you are lifting are almost all scratched off, so you have to estimate how much you're lifting. The free-weights are constantly missing, because there are only 1-2 sets of the highly sought after dumbbells. But thankfully, there are 20 elliptical machines!

Unfortunately, this is the only affordable gym in the area, so it restricts people such as myself from going anywhere else. The staff is generally nice and the other patrons are respectful for the most part, but if you are able to, go literally anywhere else to workout.

When asked employees about anything broken or closed, they are unable to give definitive answers about anything, which shows that corporate shuts them out, so we don't know if they are waiting on something from the city of Chicago such as permits, or if LA Fitness is just trying to keep this gym going until they plan to close this location in favor for somewhere else or another acquisition in the area.

I joined a week ago, so I’ll probably update this, but first impressions so far:
- very friendly and helpful staff
- Brian and Peter on the training side were normal and low pressure, didn’t give me the hard squeeze to sign up, and were cool with helping me out once a week per my needs
- yoga and Pilates instructors so far were great
- sound system in the yoga and Pilates studio is a disaster and needs fixing asap, and someone needs to come with Windex to get all the fingerprints off the mirror walls
- locker room is clean and bathrooms work and smell fine
- floor on pool deck by hot tub is slimy and needs a good mopping
- hydromassage and tanning work, but the spa attendant is not always there (you can ask for time at the desk)
- gym equipment works and a lot of it is new
I don’t see major issues here and the price works for me. I’m excited to start my training sessions. Is it Equinox? No, but it’s also 25% of the price. Everyone is willing to help or fix what isn’t right if you just ASK. 👍

And the locker room steam room feels very unsanitary like filled completely of grim from old sweat buildup never scrubbed down. The private sauna was available but needed a passcode to start and as mentioned no staff around and would have to go back through tunnel up and down stairs just to get to gym for help and same to return to spa. Used to be great when it was a premium club. As soon as that changed it went downhill. Diana, the yoga instructor, is the only bright spot I’ve seen. Lauren is great as well.

Steam room has been dying for months and finally gave up in the men’s locker room.

For a full month the men’s restroom smelled like a Portopotty in July, thankfully that cleared up just in time for most of the showers to stop working. The wood needs to be replaced in the sauna, it’s been a while and it’s getting gross.

There aren’t pins in half the machines (just buy like 20 and stick them in, done).

Never enough collars the keep plates in place (same solution as above).

The problems are all easy fixes. Given the location there will always be too many people here, but the issue is them letting stuff slide until it gets terrible over and over. It’s year end, this is when you need your new years resolutioners giving you $!

Update- much cleaner the last two months, a noticeable difference.

IMO it's not worth the price. Some of the gym's machinery and amenities are run down (broken machines, dusty common areas), lacking even a proper space for refilling water bottles. Despite extra fees for spa amenities, they're often unattended, with no staff available for assistance. While most staff are pleasant, one employee, a lady with colorful hair and glasses, consistently exhibits an uninterested and unpleasant attitude.

I love xsport I've been going for over 5 years I don't mind any shortcomings usually, but I went to this location for the first time and there was a woman working there with dyed black hair and braces who stopped me when I scanned in and yelled so loud that the whole room could hear her that I had a past due balance and exactly how much. I was going to pay it then and there but she just gave the most demeaning attitude and said I was not allowed in. She was extremely rude and clearly had no customer service skills at all I've always liked the front desk people at gyms for having good social skills but she was very spiteful.

So disappointing. The great location and free parking are offset by the fact that this gym is is a total dump. I've been told by their relatively friendly employees that corporate Xsport is on a multi-year gym update cycle, so instead of investing any of the substantial membership and merchandise revenues into making sure the equipment ACTUALLY WORKS, they've told me they won't replace broken equipment until it's this location's year, which I think isn't until 2025. In other words, they're letting the place fall to pieces, but don't worry, it'll get a refresh in a year and a half.
I've mentioned these things to their employees and even their managers repeatedly over my time here. Examples? Sure thing... Out of a bank of 7 treadmills, usually 2 of them work. The other 5 either don't work at all, or the screen is broken, or the incline is broken, or the tv is broken, or some combination thereof.
The heavy bag is so old, it's as soft as one of those Squishmallow toys so you risk spraining your wrist every time you punch it, and the chain holding it up breaks once every 3-4 months, which means there's no punching bag to use at all for typically upwards of a month. I literally punched it off the metal rack it hangs from today, and some other poor schmo didn't listen to me when I said it wasn't worth trying to fix himself. 15 minutes later, he was standing on top of a plastic bin, trying in vain to reattach it with the help of a well intentioned employee.
The hot tub is broken now, I believe the sauna is too.
1/3 of the showers typically don't work.
The mirrors are cracked all over the walls of the gym.
There are water leaks, sometimes so bad that the ceiling of the locker room is caved in all over the floor of the locker room.
It's regularly either a goose-bump inducing 64 degrees or a steamy 77 degrees.
Several machines are missing the pin to select a weight, and a handful somehow won't let a pin go into a few of the holes at all, so those weight levels are effectively off-limits.
Several other machines are mounted lopsided so one side gets worked harder than the other, unless you contort your body to offset the crookedness.
As of earlier this week, none of the rowing machines with the chain-pull have any resistance, and the screens are typically broken.
They stopped doing towel service during the pandemic and haven't restarted it, though the price hasn't reflected it.
2/3 of the paper towel dispensers are either broken or empty or have been removed completely off the walls leaving the holes where they were once attached exposed, and the disinfectant wipe dispenser hasn't been filled back up in over a year.
One of the 2 cable-cross machines is broken so often that I assume there's only 1 to use.
There have been locker break-ins, and the elevator lobby regularly smells like someone is smoking blunts in there, which is just the smell you want when you're breathing heavy after the gym.
The elevator up to the parking garage will be broken for weeks at a time, and there's a sign on the 2nd floor elevator that says something like, "the down button doesn't work, so hit up and wait."
OK, I'm getting annoyed writing this, so I'm stopping.
I've told management, but either it falls on deaf ears, or corporate doesn't care. They could even raise the price a bit, if they would only put any effort and funds towards running a quality gym.

Staff is extremely rude, they don’t treat members nicely. They only care about getting people signed up for personal trainings. Machines are often broken sometimes for years. Money was also stolen from locker cause someone cut locks, the gym said they’d reimburse members but that never happened. Overall a money grab with a bunch of mean people working there.

Extremely affordable compared to other gyms. It has a pool which I used for a short period of time. Bring everything you need. With the lower price comes more responsibility for you to keep your equipment clean and your area clean. My one gripe is that the pool area is dark and inside the pool is "dirty" I saw stains and debris.

dirty dirty dirty. honestly so gross of a gym. No one is ever working at the spa and i’m sure these machines have never been cleaned in the spa. spray tan machine is always broken or just gross. they really need to do something. machines or spa is always broken or just disgusting. The place is falling apart. I wouldn’t go near the pool. Cryotherapy machine is great but they need new gloves and equipment to keep people safe while using. No towels ever in the spa anymore. This gym has really gotten run down and nasty after covid. I hope they can fix it

TRANSFERRING FROM ANOTHER X-SPORT: Reps at this location lied to my face multiple times.

Reps at this location WILL NOT TELL YOU that you can transfer even if asking. Instead I was pressured into signing a brand new membership and cancelling my old. I elected to walk out instead of signing. Called general x sport customer service. They transferred me in 5 seconds.

I wasn’t going to leave a review but the exact thing happened to a friend of mine.

OMG! I will never return to this gym ever again.

Signed up the membership for a month, then I ended up having few surgeries and had to dis- continue my membership. After deactivating, I have got phone calls from the manager EDWIN from this location EVERY DAY, he threaten and harassed me to re-purchase the membership with him. Is this how a gym works that the manager needs to force and threat the customers to purchase the memberships? There are so many reviews about the employees from this location harass and force the customers to purchase the memberships, I bet all are from him. I'm glad people are leaving the reviews here about this issue and I hope Xsport will see the problems with the manager EDWIN and stop all the THREATS and HARASSING!

All in all, it's a good gym. I've been coming here (Pipers Alley) since May 2019 with 2 year contracts (paying upfront getting the buy one year get the 2nd free). I've always felt safe and welcome. Staff is always helpful and friendly. Machines that I use always are in a safe working condition. And looking around at other gyms, this is the most afforable and generally speaking clean. There is 2 hour free parking validation. And they also offer recovery services and Cryotherapy. Infrared Sauna is nice for a dry heat sweat.

I wish I could give 5 stars however since the pandemic, being understaffed and all is not up to the standards it once was. There does appear to be more staff available now so maybe the spa will return to it's former self.

No more towel service and I can't speak for all amenities but the Spa and self spa seems to have taken a hit. The spa is no more. As for the self spa- fitness pod is no more due to constantly breaking down and the Hydro Machines don't ever seem to be working correctly. There is no one at the spa desk (need to go to the gym's front desk for assistance) and rarely do I ever see sanitation available to wipe down after using. It does make me wonder about the other amenities (rock wall and anything water related) so I avoid using those currently.

Creepy man taking pictures of me in pool, sport workers couldn't cancel his membership until he did it again. My locker has been broken into with a very secure lock. Xsport workers said she has broken in before and still won't cancel her membership. They lied to us about calling police and told us to go home however we called police. The pool makes your eyes cry, very strong chlorine. No air conditioning. A lot of broken machines, no updates on any.
Workers have no idea what's going on half the time. Sometimes when I scan in no one is there, which is why thief's come. Xsport workers hit on everyone. When you pause your membership they still charge you so make sure you write a email to that worker that did it so you have proof! Tbh you get what you pay for.

I’ve been to just about every Xsport Fitness in Chicago area and this one is by far the WORST. Not because of equipment or because of anyone at the front desk but because of the toxic environment created by some of the personal trainers. Two trainers in particular that stand out for the wrong reasons , Mo and (the other I don’t have his name Black male with short dreads). They spend way too much time gossiping and being provocative which is probably why I barely see them actually training any clients. They like to take off their shirts in the middle of the gym and constantly criticize people on their technique from a distance . Taking off your shirt is fine in the locker room but doing so in the workout area is distracting and disrespectful to everyone else in the area. Usually “good trainers “ are knowledgeable, busy training clients and elevate the gym experience for their members by being positive and welcoming . As a paying member for over 2 years , I don’t feel welcomed at all and almost all of my interactions feel like negative ones despite me always keeping to myself and respecting the gym. I only come here when I have to otherwise I would never come at all. Just douche bags with egos who struggle to produce results for themselves or anyone at all. Their behavior is unacceptable and is huge liability towards this gyms success.

I just received a call from S.p Kelly at XSport on north ave, OMG the discrimination I just received is outrageous. There has been false allegations against me that's diminishing my character. Mrs. Kelly called today around 4:00pm informing me that I no longer have a membership because of the allegations a woman presented to them. She was extremely rude and unprofessional. Differential treatment is what I received. Without respecting me as a man and a person she continued to be rude. Without any evidence, Mrs.Kelly also told me I wasn't able to get my full refund . She was not in the gym and the woman who made the complaint - trainer her membership wasn't revoked . I walked passed her she act as if I wasn't human or why was I there. Who is she ????? I assume it was because she wanted to help her own kind before being the mediator.

This makes sense considering when the Caucasian worker jumped behind the desk flexing as if he wanted to fight- I never heard from Ms Kelly about how he treated me SMH .I walk in everyday

Maybe the trainer and the co worker and Ms Kelly - watch out for their own
Do not go to this gym

Not fancy but has every type of machine, tons of space, pool, hot tub, steam and sauna attached to men's and women's locker rooms, uv and spray tanning, cryotherapy, hydromassage... Edwin the manager and his team are on point; Martin and other trainers are the best. Not to like: bring your own towel; many members dont wipe down machines or rack their weights; can get quite crowded. However... 2 hrs free parking and a brand new Aldi two blocks away! Xsport at Piper's Alley has potential.
It has good equipment but is dirty and too warm. Even in the winter. The air conditioning is usually broken in the summer and they have the heat on too high in the winter. I have to wear a neck fan to be half way comfortable. Management only cares about selling memberships and it"s very crowded.
The staff stands around doing nothing even when asked! They say they don't know how to do maintenance orders. No one removes the weights from machines. My complaints fall on deaf ears. They are inexpensive but you are getting what you pay for. Again, it's an okay gym but needs a lot of improvement. Providing towels would be nice! Edwin is a terrible manager. Horrible customer experience when it comes to cancellation. To cancel your membership you have to come into a location or write a letter. Challenging to come into a location when you've moved far away and there's a large generation that hasn't written a physical letter since the 5th grade. I feel for customer support because they have surely been told or don't have the ability to cancel memberships and you can tell that they're embarrassed. They claim it's to keep customers safe, but the reality of the business model is to keep members from having a seamless cancellation experience so that they continue to make money off of members who do not step foot in the gym. I'd give 0 stars if I could. XSport, please upgrade your tech stack or digital cx with actual verification steps so that members can cancel on demand because you're surely quick to make it easy for them to join online.

So please be aware that when you sign up and make sure that your sales rep only creates 1 membership account. This happened to me the sales rep kept asking me what's your address again? what's your zip code again? and then I was charged twice on my credit card, I had to call the corp # (was on hold wait time for over 16mins) and the customer service rep told me that there were 2 membership accounts created so she had to delete 1 -there was no apology and she minimized the situation so go to the reviews and the B&B and this is the norm for them to double charge it happens more than not and the sad part is there are members who are oblivious and paying double every month. Very sad to have a business be unethical and double charge good people, shame on the reps for doing this and shame on the owner for not auditing the accounts before creating the charges
