Not worth the $ when equipment is always being hogged by people trying to do random supersets with 4 machines. Also LA Fitness just got sued by FTC for making it hard to cancel memberships and firsthand had this happen here….. I’d rather take my time and money literally anywhere else

It’s fine. Basic gym. Old equipment. Wish I had another option but not much else around unless you want to pay $$$ for a gym membership.
Tried to bring a guest from out of town with me one time and the manager told me they must have an Illinois state ID which makes absolutely no sense.
Needs a complete renovation.

Today was my first day joining LA Fitness, and unfortunately, it was not a pleasant start. I couldn’t check in because I forgot my login information, and instead of offering any flexibility or assistance, the manager insisted I pay for a day pass, citing “liability.” This seemed unreasonable, especially for a brand-new member just trying to get started.
To make matters worse, the manager smelled strongly of smoke — very unprofessional for a fitness environment. The lack of courtesy and understanding was disappointing.
Because of this experience, I canceled my membership immediately and will not be returning. Ironically, I later discovered the LA Fitness app offers three free trial passes, so the “liability” excuse clearly doesn’t hold up. This interaction reflected poor customer service and training, and I hope management takes steps to improve both.

Entirely too many people and not enough machines, machines constantly broken and ripped, rude staff, opens too late on the weekends, WiFi doesn’t work half the time. I don’t recommend.

Visited for a day to see about rejoining. Was denied the 3-day guest pass since I was a member ~10 years ago and paid $20 for a day pass. Ellipticals looked rusty, several cardio machines were dirty, a treadmill I tried using was broken and the gym was packed around 7 pm (typical tho).

This spot used to be decent, but since they acquired X Sport it's really gone down hill. Equipment is regularly broken, the wifi only works half the time, and from 5pm to close it's almost impossible to work out due to how busy it is. There's also a strong mildew smell near the far treadmills by the cycling room. I'm currently on the hunt for my next gym because of this. If you're thinking about getting a membership here, I'd recommend you keep looking.

I hate it here! currently trying to get out of my contract without getting ripped off...
it's no secret this is the budget choice gym -- and you'll see it at every turn.
the biggest thing for me, though, is that so many of the people who work here are really really unpleasant. seems like maybe they hate it here too? super aggressive and unpleasant. a guy at the front desk mocked a gym patron for their disability!!
I have always loved gym community at all the other gyms I've worked out at, I love to make friends with the employees!! but here I just put my headphones in and try to avoid them...

I travel for work and have been to LA Fitness locations all over the U.S. The people at this gym have no idea how to pick up after themselves—it’s trashy. Weights and cleaning wipes are always scattered throughout the gym. If this location isn’t close to your home, I’d recommend going to a different gym where people have more respect for their surroundings.

I can’t recommend Kaylee M. enough as a Trainer! She’s been incredible at meeting me exactly where I am in my fitness journey and helping me build confidence along the way. From day one, she took the time to really understand my goals and tailored each session to fit my needs.
Kaylee has given me fantastic recommendations for supplements and even shared easy, healthy recipes to support my progress. She’s also introduced me to a variety of workouts, from free weights and machines to exercises I can do at home with no equipment at all. That flexibility has been a game changer for keeping me consistent.
Beyond her expertise, Kaylee is personable, encouraging, and genuinely invested in helping her clients succeed. Her background in competitive weightlifting shows in the way she coaches. She knows her stuff and makes the process approachable, effective, safe, and even fun.
If you’re looking for someone who will meet you where you’re at, push you just the right amount, and set you up for long-term success, Kaylee is the trainer for you!

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and nice large sized gym with tons of equipment, and it all pretty much gets used up. Some equipment has older padding that should get replaced as well as some equipment that looks downright antediluvian. Also lots of machines frequently out of order. Corporate needs to get better and replacing, updating, and maintaining equipment. Also maybe a friendly chalkboard at the entrance to remind people to use deodorant, it downright smells like rotting onion by some gym goers, worse than smoking in a restaurant imo.

Saw a guy spit in there today. A women walked over and handed him a sanitizing wipe for him to clean it up. I asked her why she didn’t tell the staff. She said the staff don’t care, the trainers don’t even have their clients wipe down the equipment after they’ve left sweat all over the machines.
The place is crowded and often smells awful. Machines are always broken. Weights are never put back and are impossible to find. Management doesn’t seem to care. If they set the standard even a little higher maybe the patrons would treat the place better?
I only go because the location is perfect for me.

This gym is disappointing. You can either go at peak times and have to wait for every piece of equipment, or go late night and deal with weights scattered across the floor with the rack missing a quarter of its dumbbells. Re-racking seems to be a foreign concept to patrons and staff alike.
Staff is hit or miss. A few of the front desk employees are incredible, very kind. Some are not. Recently some new guy told me “gym is closed” at 10:55. He didn’t seem overly annoyed, just a little blunt, especially since the gym was in fact not closed. The other employee he was with definitely was annoyed. As I passed by them on my way out they were looking at some other dude who was finishing up his sets, and she was saying “omg is that dude serious?!”, clearly frustrated. I was just thinking to myself “… the gym is still open lol it’s only 10:57 now.” Closing 5 mins early has never been the policy before. I don’t think it’s crazy to ask people to start wrapping up a few minutes early, but given that hasn’t been the policy before I didn’t appreciate this encounter. Maybe staff could do something helpful like re-rack the weights instead. Lord knows they need it.
I had a buddy visit from out of town. He grabbed a workout here and when he got back he said “I’m literally angry, that gym sucks.” A succinct summary. Do yourself a favor, find a better spot to work out.
Giving 2 stars rather than 1 solely because I really like some of the front desk staff.

The gym itself can get very busy and crowded at peak times but the areas are clean, the machines are always functional, and the locker rooms and sauna are nice
My favorite part has to be the trainer Rose, I paid for just a few sessions to get into strength training at a very beginner level since I had no idea what I was doing and honestly get bored with it but she has kept me coming back for 6 months!
She’s energetic, sociable, knowledgeable, and keeps things interesting. She changes up the workouts enough that I don’t get bored and teaches me enough to be able to use the information on my own as well!

I really enjoy going to this location. The staff is very helpful. It's very clean and I like that I can carry my bag around. I do wish they had more than 3 rowing machines but the ones they have are very good models. Stationary foot plates, good resistance levels and basic, simple display which makes it great to focus on your form and get a great full body cardio. Of course like most gyms, they do try to get you to sign up for a personal trainer. It's a bit intimidating and annoying but it comes with almost all gyms you sign up for. I do have a personal trainer. Steven is a great PT. He has experience working with someone with my health conditions and limitations. He knows I'm up for the challenge and definitely tests how far and safely he can push me. I highly recommend Steven as a personal trainer. Equipment is clean and usually in working order. If something needs to be replaced or repaired, it doesn't take a long time to fix. Doesn't happen overnight but quicker than other gyms. Fair warning though, machines for glutes and legs are almost always being used. There are the occasional girls that stay on a machine for several sets and tune everyone out that want a turn. If anything changes, I'll update.

I’ve been going to the gym for several months now and during the weekdays it’s pretty chill but later in the evening and during the weekend it can be very crowded but I’ve never had to wait for equipment. Parking is free. The bottom lot is often full so I drive up and park in the top lot.
The locker rooms and gym are always clean, everyone is always really polite and friendly, or is just focused on themselves.
I enjoy going to the yoga and Zumba classes all the instructors are very knowledgeable and kind and have different styles.
I use the sauna every time which can be crowded sometimes but it’s worth it.
I saw some users complaining about access to dumbbells and there are plenty you just have to walk to the back room and get some as there are only a couple in front because there is really no space up front to use them. I grab some from the back and then I strength train in the group fitness room. There are some locked dumbbells in that room but they are locked because they are for the classes exclusively.
I haven’t been in the pool but I’d like to try it.
There is also a protein shake bar. No prices are listed though.

I bought a new membership through an affiliate and was excited to work out this morning. Unfortunately, I was turned away at the door because they didn't have anyone who could clock me in, even though I was able to show that I have an active membership. Complete waste of my time. I love working out at the Lawrence/Ravenswood LA Fitness. The facility is clean, staff are friendly, and having the Kids Club childcare option is THE big reason I joined and stay consistent.
One thing I hope they consider is expanding the Kids Club hours — especially in the summer when kids are home all day, and starting after-school care at 4pm during the school year. It would help a lot of parents keep up healthy routines and would make this gym an even better fit for families.
Overall, highly recommend for parents looking for a supportive fitness environment! Shout out to Angela in the Kids Club for always being friendly and eager to engage with the kids!

I was excited to have a pool to go lap swimming in the neighborhood. I did the 3-day pass to try it out before committing to the membership and let me tell ya the pool was FILTHY. The water was super murky, the tiles look like they have never been cleaned, and while I was swimming, my hand got caught multiple times (!!) on loose strands of hair floating around in the water. Seriously, ew. I didn’t even finish my mile because I had to get out of there, and I felt pretty gross once I came out of the water.
Also, there are only three lanes and when I tried to come before work in the morning it was absolutely packed. It’s max 2 people per lane so if you arrive and there are already two people in each lane, you have to wait 20 minutes for someone to come out.
Really bummed since this is walking distance from where I live, but no thank you!

I go to LA fitness, it wasn’t my choice, my previous gym (XSport) was bought there. I have one problem and I don't know how to solve it. I can't fully train because there are no light dumbbells in the general area, there are from 5 lb and only 2 pairs and often used by others. The light dumbbells in a special area for training with a trainer and I can't use them. So is this manipulation, an ulterior motive to make me pay for this area? What am I paying for if I can't train?

Went to the front desk and asked for a guest pass. The receptionist (ginger guy) kept pressing me to answer wether or not I wanted to just come for today or did I actually want to try it out. Said I don't live near one but I'm visiting a friend but wanted to try but wasn't sure if I could commit. He said then i'll be twenty dollars (which was ridiculous but okay) but then when I asked to at least see the gym bedore I pay for something that should be free he seemed confused ws to why I would want one?! Don't even know what I'd be paying for and seemed bother that I dare ask for any customer service.
Either bad policy or jerk at the front desk. Or worse, both. Not to mention I don't look like the typical group in this gym (draw your own conclusions) I feel especially disturbed by this experience.

I wouldn’t give even one star if I could. The fitness center 1804 W Lawrence Ave, Chicago is terrible. The trainers are so rude and unprofessional. The managers here are useless and literally have no managerial skills. Like one guy said and I agree: Step down on your high horses and tend to your members.
Every time I try to use the weights, someone follows me. One guy he is a trainer has been following and harassing me for two months now. I can’t even work out in peace. On top of that, it feels like I have to pay extra just to use basic equipment — or maybe I’m supposed to bring my own weights from home? Completely unacceptable.

This facility is incredible, staff is wonderful, and there are so many options available here. My issue with this gym isn’t something the staff can control but the culture here is awful. There are so many people here who have zero respect for the facility or those around them. Very few people clean the equipment after using it, taking weights off after use is nearly nonexistent, people will be using the same machine for over an hour and not even using it for its intended purpose, I once saw a girl doing one legged lunges on a bench press for an hour straight, and finally I have witnessed members doing exercises that literally endanger those around them. This is all out of staff control for the most part and is a huge reason I try to avoid this facility.

Yes, it’s a gym and some gym smells are expected but this gym reeks as if they never clean it and you can see visible grime around benches and the dumbbell rack. I have been a member at this Lawrence Avenue club since before the pandemic. I just started personal training (pt) sessions again after stopping a number of years ago. I was impressed that they created a separate space for the pt clients, but it is unfortunate that they have filled it with some sub par equipment.
The mats that are in the space are pitiful. As a paying client for pt I requested new mats be purchased for the pt area. I was told they were on order and would be in the pt area in 1 week. It is now at least 2 weeks and there are no new mats. It is a simple fix and yet it has not been done and no one has followed up with me to inform me of the status. I just hope the mats they have purchased are the same quality as the black mats by the mirrors.
Additionally the squat rack in the area is inadequate. Again the separate pt space is great, but not if the equipment is dangerous. It seems as members who pay extra for pt we deserve better equipment than some pieces we are currently provided.
Let me add the personal training staff are amazing. I am training with Zeus. He is attentive and has been very thoughtful about my sessions so I achieve the results I desire. All the other trainers I have been around in the pt space seem very committed to the clients they are working with.
I will also add I swim 3x/week and now that I have found the time the pool is most empty it is a wonderful part of the gym.

I’ve been a member of LA Fitness for a while, and I’ve run into an ongoing issue that has become incredibly frustrating. For months now, several weights have been locked up and inaccessible, despite my multiple attempts to use them. I even spoke to an employee months ago, and they assured me that the situation would be resolved. Unfortunately, nothing has changed, and the locked weights are still a problem.
It’s disappointing to see such a lack of action on something so basic. For a gym that charges premium membership fees, it’s incredibly frustrating not to be able to use the equipment when I need it most. I’m hoping the management will finally take action and unlock the weights, but it’s hard to keep waiting for a solution that never comes.

URGENT WARNING: DO NOT TRUST YOUR BELONGINGS AT THIS LOCATION EVEN IN A SECURED LOCKER!!!!
This establishment isn't even worth 1 star. If you value your safety and possessions, DO NOT go here. My boyfriend and I had over $1,500 worth of belongings stolen from his locker, which was properly secured with a lock.
What makes this even more alarming is that staff members weren’t surprised at all when we reported the theft. In fact, they admitted that this is not an isolated incident—there have been numerous thefts over the past several months at this specific location. Even worse, the gym made the decision NOT to inform members about the increasing risk of theft.
Despite assurances that the manager would investigate the matter and review security footage, we received NO follow-up. After repeatedly reaching out, we were told we’d hear from an operations manager after the weekend—despite having two full weekdays to respond. When we finally got a call, the operations manager offered no help whatsoever, suggesting we cancel our membership (without a refund) as though that was the solution. They took no responsibility, offered no compensation, and showed zero concern for the safety of their members.
If you are current member or potential member make sure to look over your shoulder here—this location is clearly not safe, and the staff's indifference to the situation is shocking. Please think twice before setting foot here.

I like the gym, but it’s clear that the staff care more about you having a photo on your account than actually cleaning or restacking the weights. Came in one day right when the gym opened and the weights were all over the place. Especially the dumbbells.
I’m not sure what the night duties entail, but weights off the ground and back in their space should be at least a minimum.
Also bathroom’s smell moldy and high humidity. I wouldn’t walk on the floor barefoot if my life depended on it.

Yoga Classes were taught terribly.
Pool was nice.
Sauna was nice.
Front desk was sweet but not able to be very helpful.
Not a gym for community.
Not always easy to get access to what you want to use because so of number of members.

This is by far one of the worst gym experiences available in all of Chicago. LA Fitness bought X Sport and then closed one of their busiest locations which consolidated almost that entire crowd to this one location. It is now filthy, too crowded and your workout is unproductive. LA Fitness as a company is ruining the fitness experience in the city. I’m hopeful they go bankrupt and a new company can fill the void because they created too many issues for the city.
On top of creating an over crowding problem, they also employ some of the rudest personal trainers the city has to offer. They are rude to guests that are not paying them for their time and will use space you are in or were in before them, once again, contributing to the problem of over crowding. Instead of “training” their customers to assume everyone at the gym will just move for your workout, they should be training them on how to function in a facility that is so over crowded you have to be hyper creative to get a full workout in. If my membership was not under $30/month I would cancel, but I use it when I travel.

Every time I lost an item, it has never been turned in at the front desk. I left my swimming cap and goggles in the sauna a few days ago and as expected, someone took ownership or threw them away. I am seriously thinking to subscribe to a more affluent gym, like Lifetime Fitness, where patrons can afford to buy their own gear and where the likelihood of someone stealing your stuff is considerably less.

100% you get what you pay for here. Expect to wait for machines, specifically for legs. The place just isn’t big enough for everyone who uses it. Avoid at peak hours as it’s a mess. It’d be nice if they could expand into the open Sears location next door but that’s wishful thinking.
This place is in a desperate need of a refresh and deep clean. It’s just gross, even compared to other LA’s
The pro’s are the price, usually easy parking and the Mariano’s within walking distance.

I was interested in the free fitness assessment and did not want to continue with the personal training program created for me and every staff member was extremely kind, flexible and helpful when I canceled. If you cancel in the first 3 days, there’s no fee and I realized I could not afford what I signed up for so this was a god send. The personal trainers were helpful, flexible and down to earth when working with me. The facility is clean and well maintained as well.

Busiest location in the city, people use bags to block spots next to them on stretching mats, half the stair climbers and elliptical machines are constantly broken. People sit inactive on machines waiting for others to open up. The gym etiquette here is rancid. Clean gym, no beef with the staff, only the January new year resolution payrons. Hopefully it'll be back to normal come February or march.

The facility itself is pretty good other than the absence of towel service. It's the clientele that drag down the rating. While there are some serious patrons, a huge number seem to go there just to kill time in between texting and phone calls, or just to preen in the mirror. One girl was literally Face Timing while sitting on the floor next to a machine, claiming she was using it, and then blew up when I confronted her about it, as though *I* was out of line. The weight room is particular is very crowded at nearly all hours, and for a few machines like cable rows they only have a single unit so this can mean a lot of waiting for people to finish their texting/pretend-exercising. The price is great but sadly these types of issues go along with that. I honestly wouldn't mind paying a bit more if there was towel service and fewer unserious posers.

The reason of these 3 stars it’s mainly because of the constant issues I’ve been experiencing lately at this location. First, all wet area was closed… for a week… then the sauna was closed… for a week… I mainly come here for swimming and to use the tub and sauna and its very disappointing when you cant do any of that. Taking a shower is always a challenge every time someone flushes the toilet and shower heads spraying everywhere. In the past there was always an equipment that was out of order… Not cool
Other than that it’s convenient and cleanliness is at a decent level.

Made me pay 2640$, per one year contract, don’t sign personal training contract, no refund, if you want to cancel no refund 1320$, 50%, scammers, said one hour session 55$ on sale pitch, but it was only 25 min after I already signed, they said one hour is the total time you were in the gym, like self warmups, and changing etc, I paid 55$ 4 times a month, 220$ per month, been couple times, threw up, felt really sick, they said you can use it when you will get better, they kept charging me during Covid, while they were closed, and after they were open, I was done paying, I wanted to use my sessions, they said you need to sign new contract for one session per month 55$, and then I will be able to use what I paid for already during Covid, but I couldn’t use it, because I got sick, and I couldn’t get a refund, and just left paying 3000$ per 3-4 sessions in a year!!! You will think that signing a contract with no refund, will motivate you to not miss the gym, but, you will just end up scammed, if your body will not tolerate or like the exercises they will give you! I really only come here because this gym is close to my apartment, and it’s cheap ($35/month).
There’s a good mix of machines, racks, dumbbells etc, so it has everything you need. Most of the equipment is very old and rusty, but it works. Sometimes the trainers take nearly all the 15-30 lb dumbbells and hide them in the training area. It does also get very busy but I usually don’t have to wait more than a few minutes even at peak times. The staff are generally nice and friendly. Stays open until 8 until weekends which is nice. I also like being able to use the other LA fitness locations.
My biggest frustration with this gym is that it is disgusting. The pool currently reeks of urine and has been closed multiple times for several days if not more than a week at a time in the few months I’ve been a member here. When it is open it’s filled with algae and hair. Staff replaced towels with wet wipes to clean equipment but there are only a few areas to find them so many people leave equipment sweaty. People even walk around barefoot in the main area. They do not provide towels/locks so you have to bring your own. Lastly a minor annoyance but the WiFi doesn’t work and there’s almost no cell service anywhere in the gym.
TLDR: This is a cheap gym option in a convenient location with pretty much everything you need. It could be a lot better if it wasn’t so gross.
*downgraded to a 2/5 because I have now had three separate items stolen from the locker room here, staff were not interested in helping

It's still all about the CELL PHONE here, stopped in to exercise this past Tuesday, there are 6 machines I need to use in the first room......... and all 6 machines were occupied by people sitting on the machines staring at their phones. Not a single person was actually using the machines.... just sitting scrolling on their phones.
MANAGEMENT DOES NOTHING!
It's all about the cell phone, I don't think people actually come here to exercise, I think they come to sit on the equipment and stare at their cellphones.
It's impossible to come to this gym for a quick workout because every single machine is filled with people just looking at their cellphone, not using the equipment, not exercising but instead looking at their cellphone.
If your life is so important that you cant take 2 minutes away from your phone why are you even at the gym?
Of course management does nothing about this issue.

Okay facilities. Equipment is aging and certainly needs an upgrade. They only have one real rack there and 2 of those bullshit short rack things that suck to use if you’re over 6ft or if your height falls in the awkward in between spot of the height options. Nothings broken there which is a plus. Def better than xsport on Ashland.
Bathrooms and locker rooms are clean and overall the facility and gym is well kept.
Would be great if they could add some of those new cool Olympic lifting racks with the padding. That would make this gym so much better!

I know people only write reviews when they have really fantastic or really horrendous experiences. I fall into the latter category and truly wish it was possible to give '0' stars. This place sucks.
Like the fools before you, you will get a great deal when you sign up, but you truly get what you pay for. Or in this case, what you don't. There is no towel service, and most everything from the water fountains to the lockers, to the fitness equipment, is falling apart (I'm looking at YOU, stationary bike pedals).
There is a layer of dust and grime from the light features down to the walls and floors, and the poor air circulation leaves a permanent funky smell. The wifi connection is atrocious. The staff is perhaps the most disinterested I have ever come across. No one seems to be in charge or able answer questions without an unhelpful stall tactic of 'I'll bring this to my supervisor'. The pool area is also pretty lawless. Staff do not monitor, and many gym patrons have made a practice of jumping in the pool or soaking in the hot tub in their sweaty underwear following a workout. I'm no health inspector, but that's pretty nasty. I'm so done with this dump, and I encourage anyone considering joining his gym to reconsider.

This place is horrible. If you try to purchase a membership, the sales team will bully you into purchasing a personal training package as well. In just two sessions with the personal trainer (who is actually the training manager), I sustained injuries to both my shoulder and my knee. I mentioned multiple times that I have old knee injuries, andthought the weights he had me using (for both upper and lower body) were too heavy, but he continually insisted that it was fine. It's clear that the trainers are not well trained in safety or tailoring a workout plan to the specific abilities and goals of an individual.
After my injuries I tried to get out of my membership since I could no longer work out, and was instead offered a six month freeze, and two months of my personal training membership refunded. They ended up charging me for an additional month of the training membership even after all of this. Truly horrible customer service.
