I bought personal training sessions at L&A Fitness, but my trainer started ignoring me and stopped responding to my messages. When I contacted the head manager about this issue, they promised to help, but it’s been over 4 months and nothing has been resolved. What’s worse, the head manager is now ignoring me too.

Because of their careless attitude toward clients, I ended up losing $200.
I don’t recommend buying personal training sessions here.

Here one time only as I'm at the hotel down the street and needed a lift. Just weird basement vibes and there's just too many people. No sauna, just a steam room. Came in on today trying to get a guest pass to use the gym. I'm visiting from out of state and after signing up for the guest pass was told I cant use it at that location because I don't have an IL state ID. Jessica at the front desk was unable to show me where it states that, was unable to clearly answer if this "policy" is posted anywhere for customers to see. Unfortunately Jessica offered no real help or solutions other than she can have the GM call me. I called another LA fitness and they said an IL ID is not required....I don't like giving people a hard time at work but I will be sure to let my friends and family know to avoid LA Fitness at this location due to the lack of adequate knowledge and customer service. Please do better with who you hire at the front desk as they are the first person guests see walking in the gym.

Constant AC issues..
Update from 10/14/25
Some portable ac units improved the airflow and temperature somewhat, but half of them are usually malfunctioning.
Fresh air ventilation and make up air almost non existent.
Please fix the make up air ventilation.

86 degrees inside, barely any air to breathe.
They put an order 3 months ago to have the AC fixed to no avail.
Unhealthy and unsanitary conditions caused by lack of fresh air ventilation and excessive heat.
Should sanitary authorities get involved???

Very nice gym, i really liked going there until recently, when it became obvious there is an ongoing issue with NOT WORKING AIR CONDITIONING! I I'm sweating like a pig before I even start my workout.
The air is stale and barely moving. I checked the ambient temperature in the functional training machines area and it was oscillating between 84-85 degrees and is not even May yet. Humidity is enormous.
PLEASE HAVE IT FIXED ASAP, it's been going like this for past few weeks now and it's not even really hot outside yet!
PS. My watch has the ambient temperature sensor. Picture attached with the reading from now.

Update from 5/14 ( 3 last pictures attached): temperatures inside the gym respectively 85 and 86 degrees at 73 outside temperatures. It is frightening to even think of what to expect in the midst of summer heat...

Don’t waste time and money in this gym. My locker got broken into and someone took my wallet. Happened to a friend of mine as well. Not safe at all. Saw other reviews with peoples cars getting broken into at the parking lot as well.. And the gym doesn’t care at all about those stuff.

Very good customer service for the rezen area Amanda the girl that works there is so nice and she remembered my name which is extremely difficult name to remember has a lot of complexities and I was very surprised so I highly recommend coming to this place only because of the rezen area. However, I think they should make the gym membership more expensive to maybe $80-$100 a month because $40 in my opinion is way too cheap for what you get out of it and the facility is really nice. They have a lot of updated and really nice machines however because of how cheap the gym membership is, it brings a lot of certain types of people and even if they do lose even let’s say they lose 50% of the people that go to this gym because they doubled the price they still make the same exact amount and the upkeep is gonna be half the amount and hopefully it would get rid of some of the weird people that go here AND it’s gonna make better business sense for them.

After my first visit to this gym, I’ve decided it will also be my last. There’s no phone reception, the Wi-Fi is terrible, and it feels like a sauna inside. There’s either no AC or it doesn’t work, I have no idea.
The staff is lazy. This has been the worst gym I’ve ever visited.
On top of that, all the machines make a horrible noise when removing the weight plates.
I do not recommend this gym at all.

Ignore the 1 star reviews, clearly these people are spoiled with the new commercial type gyms. Yes, it is true this LA Fitness has old machines but that is what makes this place unique. The older machines actually feel more better and natural to use then the more modern machines. I want to remind people that these are the same machines that the famous Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone used. There is a difference aura in this gym that is incomparable to the other gyms I have been to. Yes it is also true that the dumbbells are mixed up but honestly it is a small inconvenience and not as much as a big deal as these reviews claim it is. Any gym you go to will obviously have it's small inconveniences, no gym is perfect. Staff has not been rude to me or my gym buddy in any type of way. Whenever we had any questions/problems they were more then happy to help. Plates ARE NOT thrown/lying around like these reviews claim. If you are looking for a more commercial gym then I would instead recommend you go to the locations on Addison or Elston. But if you are looking for a more old school style of a gym then I would highly recommend this one!

The gym has gone through renovations and honestly it has completely modernized the gym. They added air ventilation coolers all over the gym so now it's more better in the heat. Bathrooms and locker rooms have also been modernized and so far has been completely clean everytime I have entered throughout different times of the day. I highly recommend this gym for those looking for a lowkey chill atmosphere.

I went in with my family to try out the facility using the free 3 day pass. We even booked a tour prior to going in—we wanted to know what amenities they offered, check out the locker rooms, and learn about the classes as well. When we arrived and spoke to an employee, she was highly disinterested in providing any sort of a tour or giving us more information about the facility. She just took our IDs for liability purposes and told us it was one floor. We worked out, but were already thrown off by the poor customer service. The machines were nice, so that accounts for the extra star. Lack of air conditioning made working out almost unbearable.
While we were working out we noticed the employee meant to give us a tour was just hanging out on her phone, so I guess the tour was an inconvenience. Oh well! We’ll stick to Planet Fitness.

Was a decent gym for a few months after the remodel but, as always with any gym, went downhill when it wasn’t maintained. The remodel wasn’t done that well anyway.

Where do I even begin…

Equipment: With the remodel, they replaced all of the equipment with Matrix and a few Hoist units. Hoist is great but Matrix is a marginal brand, some of their units are outright terrible. I know this is nitpicking, but I miss the days when LA used to buy from Life Fitness and Hammer Strength. Those machines are just so much better.

Spa: The sauna rarely works. They replaced the benches with new boards but glued them together/did it cheaply so naturally a few months after the remodel they’re all falling apart. There’s also mold all throughout the sauna because they NEVER clean it which is a huge health hazard. The timer also never works so it is hit or miss on whether it’ll actually be on. The only way to turn on the heaters manually is with a hidden timer underneath them but once they realized what people were doing they build boxes around them. I love how that was their solution instead of actually fixing the timer outside.

WIFI: The gym is in the basement of an office building so you have no cell phone reception whatsoever. Instead of installing a solid WiFi network in there so you have strong and fast signal in all parts of the gym they put 1 router by their sales department and that’s it. There are huge dead zones all throughout the gym. It’s terrible. Can’t stream music or send any texts.

Bathrooms: They’re filthy and smell horrific. Nothing more or less to say. I can’t even blame the staff on this one.

This facility's recent remodel brings it closer to chain competitors such as EoS and Chuze but is still not as nice and still charges more. It is an improvement. More spacious now with duplicate equipment, but still filthy locker room floors. LAF significantly lags competitors EoS and Chuze, which offer far cleaner and more advanced facilities, many open 24/7, and with $9/month rates. Chicagoans are getting ripped off, and anything we can do to expedite EoS into Chicago would be a win for everyone.

The gym is big and with good equipment.
But, one big BUT, they have a problem with organizing cleaning. People come to training, and the cleaning stuff hangs around them with a vacuum cleaner and raises even more dust, I really don't think it's worth it for anyone to train in such conditions.
Also, I had an unpleasant situation at the pool today. While I was swimming, the cleaning lady accidentally spilled a bucket of dirty water in the pool while cleaning the floor.
I reported it, but no one did anything about it.
People come and pay for gym and pool time, no one gives it for free, so try to make sure everything is clean before the gym and pool are open and don't disturb people with cleaning, who come there to use what they paid for!

I got there today with a free pass, the gym is big, pretty complete and the machines are pretty nice and look like brand new. However the service was terrible, people are unfriendly. I spoke to someone over the phone who was extremely nice, but the experience on site was so bad, idk if was because I forgot my ID or they are just like that all the time. LA fitness is everywhere. It’s now $44/month plus $100 sign up fee and sometimes they have promotions for no sign up fee and $39.99/month and month to month contract. The parking lots are ample here and super easy to park at anytime and it’s free. If you want to bring a guest you have to pay $20 per month extra or your guest pays $20 each visit. You can select a family plan for $20 more. And you can have a US wide membership or just local and you pay a different price. US wide is about $50/month. This is as of 5/31/25

I am writing to formally report an unacceptable and humiliating experience I had today at your LA Fitness location.

Roughly 15 days ago, I paid both the first and last month of my membership. I was no aware of the annual fee scheduled for April 1st and had every intention of paying it on Monday, as today is Saturday and my banking options are currently limited over the weekend.

Despite that, today I was denied entry due to the unsuccessful payment attempt of the $60 annual fee. I explained my situation respectfully and proposed a prompt solution — to make the payment on Monday — but was still refused entry.

I was also denied the right to file a complaint on-site. This felt deeply disrespectful and humiliating, especially since I am a paying member who has shown responsibility and goodwill.

This is not only a poor customer service experience, but it also borders on unethical practice to lock out paying members with no due process, and to silence them by refusing them the right to file a complaint.

I am outraged by the control over the pool. You enter the sauna wearing sportswear and sneakers. It is not normal for me to go to the path in a bathing suit. They don't let you shower after the sauna. They enter the pool in their white boxers. Then there are terribly old people in the pool in the jacuzzi where they rub their skin. After the renovation of this gym and the merger of LA and Xsport fitness everyone from the hip Xsport started feuding LA Cumberland making it impossible to get a good workout in due to the volume of people that are constantly in the gym and the inadequate amount of equipment to cover that volume. I understand it is a business and LA is making their money, but at the same time I don’t think that people are incredibly happy of people going to this facility. Also the biggest bummer is that there is no cell connection to the outside world, they do provide wireless internet but when you have 100+ people down there and everyone is connected to the same internet the connection becomes week. I would not recommend this facility to anyone at this time…find a less busy gym.

I came to LA Fitness Cumberland and try to pay for a day pass on February 12th 2025.
I was unable to be charged 20 USD from a 100 USD bill this due to property claiming that USD dollar is not valid at their facilities unless is exact change payment; I tried to paid with Apple Pay but they told me is not valid as a payment option.
As a current traveler this is very inconvenient; the only option manager gave me was that I should go out and find change ( outside temperature was really low due to snow season).
In my opinion staff is very rude, doesn’t try to help customers; also they request a State ID which in my case I can not provide ( I’m Mexican resident who lives in Mexico and I was in Chicago just for a few days; I provide my appropriated ID).
The gym is like any other LA fitness with good equipment, clean and nice however they need to work on their customer service.

This gym is a total joke. I don't know where to even start. Good luck getting any workout in between 4pm -7pm. The gym is totally packed. Almost every single piece of equipment is occupied. So if you have a job and want to work out, you will have to come after 8 pm to have a chance to work out. Hours on weekends are bad. The gym opens at 8 am and closes early. Because the gym is located in the basement, no phone reception and WIFI is horrendous. Compared to several other gyms across US LA Fitness, it is worse by far.

The training rooms are always locked, even though they have equipment I could use. I don’t use heavy weights, but there are no light free weights (5, 10, 15 lbs) available either. When I asked the receptionist, I got the runaround and was told something vague about a trainer—yet I never see anyone training in those rooms.

The locker rooms are disgusting—there’s never hot water, and the sink barely works.

I’m paying for a membership but can’t access all the amenities or get proper service. I even called corporate, but they didn’t answer my questions. I do NOT recommend this place.

I went to this place over 15 years ago when it used to be Ballys. Now Gym is renovated, including lockers. Floor is left the same and bathroom are still the same. I signed up because I thought everything was new and clean. Bathrooms are not, tiles were painted over through out the bathroom, weak water in the shower. This is my local gym, and I love working out here. The staff is great, and equipments are brand new!
However, there are a couple of downsides. First, there are no dry paper towels available for members. While I understand the disinfectant wipes are provided for cleaning equipment, dry paper towels should also be available in the restroom and shower areas. It’s frustrating not having basic essentials like these.

Additionally, the Wi-Fi doesn’t work at all, and despite complaints, no one seems to be addressing the issue. Fixing these small but significant problems would greatly enhance the experience!

Upon reviewing my account, I noticed that I was charged double for the last three transactions due to an error resulting in two accounts being created for my daughter in error. Upon discovering this issue, I contacted your office promptly to request the duplicate account's cancellation and a full refund for the erroneous charges.
Unfortunately, Cindy’s response was not only dismissive but also unprofessional and unethical. She flatly refused to address the issue, stated that refunds were “not possible,” and suggested closing my account with no refund as the only resolution. Her approach, including her tone and remarks, was disrespectful and highly inappropriate, particularly when she implied the mistake was entirely my fault despite my immediate efforts to resolve the matter.
Additionally, I attempted to contact Jennifer as instructed by your office but never received a return call. This lack of follow-up and accountability only compounds my dissatisfaction and raises serious concerns about your company’s internal processes and commitment to ethical customer service practices.

Nice club, but i had a horrible experience with Jennifer, the Operations Manager, who was extremely rude and unaccommodating. Horrible customer experience, 0 stars for Jennifer. I will be watching my charges to make sure she doesn’t try to retaliate and place charges to my account for this bad review. She just rubs off as that kind of person.

The gym has undergone a big renovation in the past few months. All new equipment with a much better layout. The locker areas were also updated, but the bathroom areas still need some love. Anyway, it looks much better than a year ago.

I joined LA Fitness, and I’m really impressed! The gym is spacious and clean, with a wide range of equipment that’s always in great condition. Wow! This is one of the nicest gyms I’ve been to in the Chicago land area. It was very spacious, well kept, clean, and the equipment was modern. The dumbbell rack was unbelievable. It was huge. They also have a running/ walking track around the facility. they have a parking garage you can park in.

This club has had a great remodel since the last time I came. Finally a location that doesn’t smell or look musty. I’ve known this location since 2007 but relocated to Texas a couple years ago. Since then I moved back to IL and this is my new home gym. Big thank you to manager, Jennifer, who made my transfer a piece of cake. And if you’re into steam rooms, this location has a great one! Can’t wait to make this my second home.

Need more experienced instructors and more classes wifi is horrible please fix it I want to listen to my own music ...and it's really hot.no air conditioning and in winter too hot..sad to see this place close due to lack of good service..so hot and morning instructors blasts her music with doors open really off putting .. equipment is really hard to clean when you run out of sanitizing wipes

I am traveling from Tennessee and stopped in for a workout while I was in town. The staff was incredibly helpful and the gym itself is top notch. Thanks guy complaining about lack of music! Now this cheesy music is so loud, I can't hear my own. Not to mention the sound quality is on the poor side. When I asked staff to turn it down a bit, they told me that only the manager could do it and he won't be back till Monday. So either the manager is a control freak or staff can not be trusted with this task. Judging by the style this place has been run lately, both options are possible.
Many reviews points out recent remodeling... Well, yeah. They painted the place and installed new vinyl floor. Replaced equipment that mostly was in decent shape, anyway. It seems that 6 month was not enough to address the most important issues this place was struggling with. Ventilation and ac. AC lately seems to be working fine but I won't be surprised to see it fail or unable to keep up when temperature outside hits 90. Ventilation in men's locker room is a disaster. It's constantly hot and humid in there with not so occasional drain stench from the showers. Showers were pretty much left untouched during "remodeling". Back in the days some shower heads were leaking so they called plumbers Rusty and Skeeter. They had some leftovers from previous side jobs and installed them in men's showers. So there's variety of styles of shower heads with one common characteristic. They have extreme flow restrictors.
There are some more enthusiastic reviews out there that make me puzzled a bit. Giving 5 stars to a place that is at best mediocre? And I'm not talking about comparing with some higher tier gyms. Just some well run LA fitness places in the suburbs.
It's not a pleasure to write all this but when I asked staff about addressing some of these issues, I've got a standard reply "I'll pass it on to my manager" or "It used to be we could do it but we can't anymore". These are the better ones. On the worse side they suggested I should try another location....
