I normally don’t like leaving bad reviews. I don’t think it’s fair to react in anger at a situation and do something that could affect a business’s rating. However, in this case, I’ve given myself some time to cool down, and I still feel it is warranted to do this.

Short story…to anyone scrolling through reviews trying to decide if you should join Legacy Fitness, just understand if you sign up, you ARE being swindled into a contract, which you’re not getting out of easily...probably not at all. They have no sympathy for people whatsoever, it seems, regardless of your situation. My advice would honestly be to avoid this place. You can find other gyms who offer the same amenities, who are transparent about what you’re signing up for, who value their members, and who will work with you if you hit hard times (if such things matter to you, as they do to me).

I’ve attached screenshots of the contract they sent me AFTER I signed up, so you can read it BEFORE you do!

If you want the long story…
My husband and I joined in the Spring of ’25. We chose Legacy Fitness because it was the nearest gym to us. We signed up online. Super easy. After we signed up, gave our bank info, and paid our fees, we rec'd a confirmation email, which I didn’t pay much attention to at the time, tbh.

Over the summer our family took a financial hit, unfortunately, and unavoidably. We couldn’t really afford to spend $100 a mo. on our memberships anymore. But we tried to wait it out, thinking things would turn around quicker than they did. By Sept, we decided to tighten our budget and let go of the gym, at least for a while.

We called the Carbondale facility to cancel, since there was no option to do so online, and got a bit of a runaround from the staff. To be fair, they weren’t rude, just seemed uninformed, and a little confused. We were referred to the Marion facility, where we finally spoke to a woman whom we believed to be a manager, and told her we needed to cancel our memberships.

Instead of asking why or asking if there was anything they could do to keep us…she shamed us. In fact, she gave a whole speech on the importance of health and fitness and how "that was the whole point of joining the gym in the first place." As if we're too stupid to understand that.

She was completely rude and unprofessional. She informed us we were under a 12 mo. obligation, and they would not break our contract. She said she would mark us as “set to cancel,” but we’d be required to cont. paying our monthly dues until the end of our contract agreement. What contract agreement?? I went back to the confirmation email I’d received after I’d signed up, and sure enough, there was a contract attached.

The woman did agree to email us the cancellation form, but we never rec'd said form. We waited a couple of weeks and after I simmered down, we sent a letter to the owner, with our key cards, apprised him of our situation, and basically asked for a little empathy. That was in Oct. By the middle of Nov, we still hadn’t rec'd any form of communication from them.

I then emailed the owner, John, inquiring whether or not our letter had been rec'd. He responded only to inform me he'd gotten it and that we were “set to cancel,” after the final payment of our contract.

When we signed up to join Legacy Fitness, we had no intention of ever needing to cancel our memberships. I was a member of another gym in my home town for 15+ yrs with no issues-ever. But sometimes life throws unexpected curves at you, and you must adjust accordingly.

The facility itself is nice. It’s never over-crowded (although I think I now understand why) and it was always clean. We enjoyed it when we could. Had they been understanding and handled things differently, we would’ve probably stayed loyal members through and through.

I very much regret joining this gym.

To the owner: I hope you enjoy the last few hundred bucks you’re squeezing out of my family. Our situation will improve, but you’ll never get another dime from us (or from anyone we know if I can help it) once our contract ends next Spring.

Joining the gym has been the best experiance. Thanks to Ben at the front desk he worked with me in getting signed up. Honestly I was not gonna join after my first visit, but thanks to bens determenation calling me several times as a reminder. I joined he inspired me to get fit. My health is better since I have joined. Thanks to Ben. 6 years later still going.💪

10/10! Very nice, well kept gym with plenty of equipment and space. I purchased a very affordable week pass while visiting… tremendous value. The very helpful and attentive staff were friendly and always working hard to keep workout areas tidy and keep the gym and locker rooms clean. Impressed and will return!

The gym equipment is nice and new. Went in for a week trial membership, the hours sucks to I couldn't really try anything. The sauna doesn't get above 95 degrees and doesn't work right/properly. I am just glad I didn't invest in this gym or sign a contract.

After my year contract was done, I switched gyms. Apparently they didn't like that because now I have delinquency on my credit score. Way to run a business. Squeeze everything out of your customers. *EDIT* I've been a customer twice, first time I was told an employee I would have no cancelation fee. This second time, I was told no fee because I wasn't under any obligation or contract. Never have I been permanently disabled. The only resolution is to be an honest, good person and stop lying.

Everything is clean, everything is in perfect working condition, all of the weights are always react and put away, it's never busy and most importantly I never have to wait for a rack or a machine. If you're going to get a gym membership, understand, if you're a student, you'll be contact by lawyers to pay them. Can you imagine? Is that worth a workout? I was on top of it and communicated I'm out of town now, as they promised they would end my membership when this happened upon signing up. It's a much healthier choice for your safety of your money and sound peace of mind to just head to Planet Fitness, it's easy to cancel if you need to. This person isn't running a gym, it's some sort of contract scam. I was wondering why there's so few cars in the parking lot. If you have just a smidgen of self-respect, don't risk your hard earned money on this owner's tactics, it's really ugly. This isn't a gym membership, it's an agreement to force your money into their pockets even without service. It reminds me of the mafia. How they forced businesses to pay without even a service. Sometimes when people read these reviews, they think it won't happen to you, it will.

The sauna in the women's bathroom is never on and even if you turn it on and work out for an hour it's not even 100 by the time you come back to it. Theres no mats or dedicated area for stretching. Really regretting the year membership.
Edit: I found the stretching room last time I came in so I added a star back for that. However the sauna was not on and after switching it on and coming back 1 hour and 10 mins later it still wasn't very hot. I also noticed some of the panels were not attached. Hopefully this can be fixed! Thanks for your response 👍

I've been to several gyms but this one here is by far the cleanest I've been to. I see bad reviews on here properly when it was gold's gym, though I haven't had any experience while it was underneath that branding Legacy has been great! I had concerns about the contract and beginning and I made my concerns well known and they showed me in the contract have those could be settled. All of the staff has been honest and upfront along with being friendly. Had a machine squeak in the middle of the workout and an employee immediately came with WD-40 to stop it from squeaking and fixed the problem. Could not ask for better staff than that! If you are planning on joining the gym, begin your legacy at Legacy!

Wish I lived here because this gym was really great. One of the extensive hammer strength machine selections I have ever seen. Great locker room, clean place, friendly front desk. Clearly a former Golds Gym, but their loss was Legacy’s gain. Love that if you’re a member, it looks like 24/7 access. Day pass was an easy $10.

Changed from golds to legacy fitness. Now you cannot use other golds gyms which was one of the perks of having a golds membership. They did this without redoing their contracts and lowering prices or offering something in its place to offset the loss of value. Poor customer service here.

Wow, so many bad reviews and the majority are due to not being able to walk away after a few months or even a year. Who joins a gym worries about when they can quit? Talk about commitment issues! Why join a gym at all then? Just buy some stuff and stick it in your garage, then you can quit whenever you like?

I had worked out consistently for twenty years. Then work and life got in the way so *I* did exactly what I just said, I filled my basement with equipment and carried on. Health issues cost me my job, which then cost me my home. Two years later I’m in MURPHYSBORO and FINALLY healthy enough to workout. My FIRST choice was Gold’s. Sure, I checked out Planet Fitness, even worked there for three days, but everything about that place from the “lunk alarm” to the bowls of candy screams joke.

It took a beat to make sure I could afford the membership but when I finally joined Gold’s I did so with NO intention of quitting so a year long contract-Hell, a THREE year long contract was absolutely fine. I don’t plan on leaving until they close the doors for good.

And yeah, it’s twice what the über-fancy membership at planet fitness costs but quite frankly that’s what keeps the planet fitness folks at planet fitness and not hogging the stuff I need, so money well spent in my opinion. If I had any complaint at all it would be the high cost of tanning, but hey, that’s what tanning salons are for, right?

I’ve spoken with one of the owners on many an occasion and found him to be sincere, and straightforward - two qualities the world could use more of.

As for folks complaining about high pressure sales, when someone’s salary is dependent on commission do you really expect them NOT to try to get you to sign? Letting you simply walk out the door is akin to letting food walk off their table. It’s how they pay their bills folks, you’d do no different if roles were reversed.

Gold’s Carbondale has a friendly member population, I’ve had zero run-ins with anyone who wasn’t polite and affable; the equipment, while used, is perfectly functional, and, unlike PF, the dumbells go up to 150 pounds. I may never make it back to that end of the pool but it’s motivating to know it’s there.

If you want a good, solid, old school neighborhood gym, then sign up and get busy. If you want puffery, purple equipment, and pizza, join PF.

Gold's Gym Carbondale Illinois is clean and beautiful. The staff is helpful and encouraging. I'm impressed with the carefulness and discipline in maintaining all the safely standards and even waxing stronger during the pandemic. Keep up the good work, keeping the society healthy, strong and in top shape. Congratulations!
Now, here's a greater Good News. God's unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own great and glorious family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave God great pleasure. Ephesians 1:5. What an amazing demonstration of love! That's how much God loves you, Repent, give your life to Jesus Christ and enter into God's glorious family right now. Please don't delay. Prayerfully look for a Church where Jesus Christ and righteousness are preached, believed and lived, or practiced, and then get totally committed serving God there. You'd be glad you did, that's for sure!

I’ve been tanning here for years and really like this place. But every time I come in there is no employee to be found. The past few times I have stood at the front desk for over 10 mins waiting on someone to acknowledge me. I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t be at the front desk at all times. It didn’t use to be like this. Today I got put in a dirty bed after waiting 10 mins at the front desk for an employee to show up.

Be sure to read the contract because the employees will lie and say anything to get you to sign up. I do not recommend this place at all!
Editing since I cannot reply to the rude reply they left (and later deleted after what I added).
Your information is false for one and for two what you said has absolutely nothing to do with what I said! I was going and my sessions were when I first signed up (not later "to get me back on track").
I moved, lost a child, and life hit me hard. I tried to cancel the way I was told I could and then it was a different story. Your staff lie and say anything to get people to sign up. It's WRONG PERIOD! I have heard others who delt with the same thing.

Previously had rated 5 but dropping to 1 because the customer service is awful. I moved out of state and called to cancel my membership. I spoke with Ben and also communicated via email. He never mentioned needing to come in person and said he would get my membership cancelled. I later noticed that I was not charged the cancellation fee but that two more months were charged instead. After 2 weeks of getting the run around and slow responses, I was told that my membership never cancelled and I can't get a refund on the difference because I needed to come in and sign something. The gym itself is nice but given the chance I would never do a membership there again. Too many hoops to jump through to cancel and shady customer service.

I’m new to the area and wanted to find a gym nearby. The facility was fine but I quickly felt uncomfortable and pressured to begin a membership here. One concern was a place to run as my current gym had a track. When I expressed this concern I was asked “tell me- what’s the difference between a treadmill and a track?”. For anyone who has ever ran on a treadmill this is pretty obvious, they’re totally different. I wanted to take some time to go home and think about my options but then was asked why I needed to think about anything at all. It was an odd experience. It felt as if the employee was more worried about a commission than a potential client using the gym. The employee also couldn’t tell me what the actual enrollment fee was but instead said “between $50 and $75”. Overall the experience was unpleasant and I will not be joining or recommending Golds. Perhaps a lesson in sales and customer service would be beneficial for management.

They trick you into signing for a year (won't let you read what you sign until after the fact). Even if you try to cancel your membership they keep taking money. They take out more money than the contract states and don't take out the stated fees on time. Even after speaking with management and taking proof of over charging, they still wouldn't refund me. Management is slow to respond and takes over 2 weeks to return phone calls. Biggest mistake ever joining this gym. Under different supervision it might be a good place. It's sloppy and lazy at best.
I had gotten harassment calls from the marion office saying they couldn't charge my card even though they were doing it the whole time and I took proof to management.

It's a nice facility unfortunately their business model is 1980's. They are worse than Comcast about refusing to let you cancel and be prepared to spend about 25% of your cost on fees. Fees, fees, and more fees....and a fee to cover the processing of the fees. This area is saturated with gym options and I would suggest looking into those based on cost and ability (or inability at Gold's) to cancel.

It blows me away when I read reviews of people who call Gold's contracts "criminal." Firstly, this is an amazing gym given that it is located in a small college town setting. Second, the employees and ownership are top notch because they offer a really warm, friendly, and nonjudgmental environment. The trainers are pretty amazing too because they devote a lot of time and energy in helping you and your body realize its potential. The pricing is competitive given all that you get for your money. The equipment is in good condition, and usually repaired when it fails pretty timely. There is also tanning, showers, and a really good facility. For those who sign a contract, and then do not pay, shame on you, not the company who relies on you to pay your damn bills.

This is a nice gym with a staff that is willing to help you out if you're a beginner. I was impressed with the cleanliness and the sauna in the bathroom. I love that it's 24 hours.

I do prefer a local gym but I did like this Gold's. I ended my membership because it was on the other side of town and I found a gym that was closer. My other complaint was that this gym is expensive for this area. I was able to grab a membership for $40 a month over the summer but was told if I wanted to extend my membership that my monthly rate would be higher. I go to a gym now of a similar caliber and pay less than I would have.

Reading some of these comments, the negative ones, make me want to say (1) read your contract, and (2) pay your bill. This gym has amazing staff, the owners are attentive, it is an excellent value for the money. No one rips anyone off here. It is much more calm than the REC center.

Friendly staff, big place, with quite a lot of strength and cardio equipment. The functional training area has everything one could need (deadlift platform, squat cage, pull up bars, plyo platform, TRX straps and a small collection of kettlebells). Day pass was $10, perfect place for a traveler passing through Carbondale

They will tell you anything to get you into their contracts. I told them I was moving so I didn't know if I would be there for a year, the employee told me that if I move and there were only a few months left that they would be waived. I thought this was a great deal, so I signed up for a year. I ended up moving with three months left in my contract, to a location that did not have a Gold's Gym. So I went in to see if I could end my contract early. The guy acted like I was a waste of his time and didn't want to do anything for me.

I now go to a gym that is half the cost with more equipment, AND no contract.

This company is a typical "Globo Gym."

Support your local gyms and go to an "Average Joes."

BEWARE!!! The contract is a dressed up SCAM to lock you into owing them indefinitely. How do I know? They came after me for over $1700.00 after trying to cancel my membership. Upon sign up, they only let you see a small digital signature pad (not the contract) A gold's employee will paraphrase and summarize whats on the contract and then ask you to sign the signature pad at different intervals. Be very careful as they write all kinds of things into that contract.

I spoke with both owners about this personally only to confirm they are 100% crooked businessmen. They attempted to badger and bully me into paying $900 cash that day as a settlement for the $1700 that they wanted. Crazy to think some people probably accept that option. They threatened to send collection after me, sue me, and take me to court. Their profits come from ripping people off and both owners belong in jail.

The gym itself is OK, just don't trust the people.. My experience with the personal trainers is that they are rude to anyone in the gym that isn't paying extra for lessons. (for example telling you to move off of a machine that you pay to use and attempting to intimidate). As a matter of fact, just go ahead and find a different gym. Going to Gold's Gym will leave you exposed to too much risk. If you are already involved in a similar situation with Gold's, educate yourself on how to handle the situation. There are a lot of others online that have had to fight this fight. I ended up writing letters to the Illinois Attorney Generals Office and the collection agency in order to dispute the invalid debt.

Excellent Gym. It has great hours, available when you need it, even childcare. Recently, the staff has been friendly and helpful. The personal training is especially helpful, although it is an extra fee.

Careful, though. Consider whether or not you have a life schedule that allows you to use the gym in such a manner. If you have a life where circumstances can change drastically and cause you to be unable to use the gym, you CANNOT CANCEL YOUR MEMBERSHIP. I mean, you are locked in forever. The only way out is to die, become disabled or relocate away from another Gold's Gym. Also, read your contract carefully, because they can charge you even after your contract is over. They will not assist in helping you navigate these circumstances, either. If it is the best decision for you to join, you will enjoy it. If you have a pause, definitely try another option instead of joining.

I go there to work out not for smoothies, so I say it's a good place with good staff.

Aweful. Agreed with a 1 year contract, manager signed us up for a 3 year, along with multiple other lies. Cancelling is a nightmare unless you like wasting tons of money on stupid fees. Save yourself some time and money and go somewhere else!

They have a good deal for students semester wise (4 months at a time, paid in full)

Yeah protein shakes aren't amazing but they get the job done, they give you protein with some flavor - you want something better just make your own

And 24 hours access Mon-Thurs, up to Fri eve is a damn good feature for students who stay up all night studying

Equipment is top notch, a lot of variety, sauna room, nice showers - I question what the other reviewers below were expecting - someone to hold their hand? You get what YOU put in when you go to the gym - which requires consistency, discipline, and hard work. And this gym has more than enough resources for you to get it done.

Twice now, I got a bad watery, tasteless smoothie that didn't mix right. The first time when I asked for a new one -a free replacement- they gave me one, but when it happened again yesterday, the young girls behind the front desk on the late afternoon shift acted arrogant and judgmental and made me feel like it was MY FAULT and that it was too bad if I didn't like the smoothie I got. So I think these young girls are lacking an understanding of the importance of good customer service. Interesting that front desk staff at this Gold's is so transient, and that they are always seeming fairly desperate for new members, which I probably won't be one of when my contract runs out, and certainly won't be recommending them to my friends!

A clean, well equipped facility for a variety of personal health activities. The choices for group classes and personal trainers allow you to find the right choice for your needs. The staff makes ALL members feel comfortable, regardless of their individual status (gym rats to folks who struggle).
What you will pay for membership or training will feel like a great bargain or a routine expense, or an annoying bill. IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOU WANT AND WHAT YOU PUT INTO YOUR GYM EXPERIENCE! If you're uncertain, try a short membership. Those choices are yours to make!
