Be very wary signing up for the monthly contract - they make it impossible to cancel without paying an extra month’s fees.
Nice enough facility, just a shame that their sales/contract tactics are so shady

Avoid at all costs. It's overpriced and crowded unless you work out at like 6am. The staff are indifferent. They have scammy membership plans with hidden fees. There are much better options in the area.

They trap you with membership. Last time I canceled through email, the guy who responded me with confirmation but I found out I was charged for half a year for two people because there was a small fine line on his email on the bottom saying that I needed to confirm! (They really set the system up to trick you and you won’t win.)
This year, I signed up again for a few months and tried to cancel, they notified me that I had to pay one extra month just to get it canceled.
Gr. Just frustrating. It’s VERY difficult to leave the membership without paying EXTRA fee.
Be careful!

I was a member for 1 yr before needing to cancel due moving out of state. I visited the Lincoln Square location in person to cancel and shared that I was moving due to my partner's sudden death, and it was his account on the payment. I was assured the cancellation was completed, but now, a year later, the bank informed me that the $79 monthly fee has been for the past 12 months. When I called to get clarity on the cancellation, I was told it is not possible to refund the 12 months of unused membership OR at least cancel for this month, due to not having a confirmation email (I went in person to cancel!!)- saying the 30 day cancellation policy still holds. Would NOT recommend!

Something I really look forward to when going to the gym is being greeted nicely when I walk in the door. The front desk staff here actively ignore me, and often have a look on their face that's annoyed that I'm even there. Some of them are super nice, but it seems that most of the time I go this happens. They also don't have a Smith machine, and their hours end way too early. It's barely worth what they charge. The Lakeview location is much nicer, and the staff are very friendly there.

Went here for eight months, only lifted weights (they have yoga/spin/HIIT classes I never participated in). Always clean. Have the basic machines, nothing too extravagant but have everything I’d consider essential. Can get busy during peak times but nothing that prevents a good workout. It was exactly what I was looking for, would still go to the gym if I still lived in the area.

I’ve been a member for several years and have been very happy with the CAC gyms. This location is convenient for me and has some of my favorite classes and trainers (s/o Jennifer & Lisa) I find their classes to be effective and their small group training was a great launch into my fitness journey - highly recommend. The overall vibe is positive and high energy and I’ve met many other friendly members here. The equipment and rooms are constantly being cleaned and I personally feel most members make the effort to clean the equipment after use. I also like their hours - very accommodating. The front desk staff is always smiling and greeting you. 10/10

This review is from the perspective of an in shape guy in his 20s. I exclusively come here to lift weights and use the cardio machines, I don’t participate in any of the classes that are offered.
Pros:
Have been a member for about 6 months, I haven’t been scared off yet. I’ve made significant progress since starting here.
Plenty of free weights, has all the bare minimum machines / cables / weights in order for you to get a really good and varied workout each time you come
Is clean enough
Cons:
The area with the free weights smells really bad sometimes. Most comparable smell would be sewage. This has been present since I signed up for a membership in September 2024. It’s honestly unavoidable, and is something I’ve gotten used to.
Cardio machines setup isn’t great. The room gets hot during the warmer months
Sometimes, one of the treadmills is completely unusable due to tons of water dripping on it from the ceiling.
The place is slammed from 5-7, I try to avoid going at this time
Their hamstring curl machine is awful. It feels like it’s going to break your leg. Who the hell designs a machine like that.
According to other reviews, they have very predatory membership practices. I have a membership through work so I haven’t experienced this. Definitely something to consider.
The place closes kind of early compared to many other gyms.
To conclude, if there was another gym the same distance from my house, I’d definitely switch. But realistically this gym is the best option for people in my scenario. This place could be so much nicer if they tried, but being that there’s no competition, there’s no need for them to.

I worked out here for the first time today and the vibes are really weird overall, it's not a welcoming environment. This is something important to me when I look for a gym.
There was a trainer named Patt (I looked at his name tag) who took a piece of equipment from me while I was using it (no, I didn't walk away from it and I was in the middle of my sets, I briefly stood up to take a sip from my water bottle), he did not acknowledge me at all and did not look at me, he just plopped his client on and completely took it, the moist annoying part about this was the other lat pull was free, he was just too lazy to get the proper attachment and decided to take mine because that is more convenient for him.
I think that behavior says a lot about the gym itself and the culture at this club. The facility itself was also pretty dirty overall and a lot of people do not wipe down equipment after use despite the signs to do so, there is a lot of stuff on the floor (salt and dirt). I think for the actual price of the membership, it's definitely not worth it. There are so many better options in Chicago at that price point with better energy and well maintained facilities.

If you value being treated like a human when you need to cancel your membership because you moved 2,000 miles away, I don't recommend this gym. Signing up is easy and then they'll hold you hostage once they have your credit card info.

I've been a member at Lincoln Square Athletic Club for over a year now, and it’s been excellent! The gym is always spotless, and the staff members are very friendly. Recently, I needed help adjusting my membership, and Danny made the process smooth and easy. Joined in mid February- Danny helped us and was super cool. I really love the robust class schedule, I pretty much only do classes. My only complaint about them is that I feel like I’m always stuck focused on the same muscle groups even in different classes. The locker rooms are nice and the gym is always clean- overall a great experience and a place that makes me actually enjoy exercising. The trainers are usually great and I never feel like I’m being shamed for moving at my own pace.

Love this gym and I’ve been a member for years, but they really need to crack down on creeps lingering in the men’s locker room. Yesterday there was a buck naked old dude in the locker room for a solid hour. I heard a guy moaning in the shower two weeks ago. I’ve often been aggressively cruised in the sauna. Weekend afternoons are the worst. Please sweep through the locker rooms more often and eject the creeps.

A solid three stars for this location. Gym is clean shout-out to the lady and gentleman who are non stop keeping equipment and rooms clean I am grateful . culture of gym is nice. People come here to exercise just how I like it. Offers sauna and steam room with an abundance of lockers WE LOVE THAT. I’ve been a member of cac on and off due to having moved. I’m back and disappointed to see cac standards have significantly gone down post COVID. Is there no one to do maintenance on treadmills? Constantly having to check the machines to make sure I won’t bust my $hlt because they suddenly and abruptly pause throughout my run. My knees are important and do not appreciate it.
Gym has a very awkward setup. Pool is across the street in an entirely different building YIKES that’s weird and will almost surely ensure I will never use it. Gym has no parking and very small. Weight room is tiny. Staff are give and take. Some are awesome and friendly others are dry faced and would much rather tend to their social needs on their phone than to greet and acknowledge members. All in all a good gym. perfection is rare. Even after all the cons I enjoy this gym.

Beware! They do not honor the terms of their contract, and will tell you that they see the mistake, but are unwilling to do anything about it. I was charged prior to the first payment date, so had been pre-paying from the start. Not too big an issue until I want to cancel my membership well beforehand, and LSAC claim that I must still pay.
The gym facilities are passable, but are hardly worth mentioning considering their sheisty business practices.
If you still feel COMPELLED to visit here, a short term or PIF membership is the only way you won't get scammed. I'm only giving 1 star because 0 stars aren't available.

Staff and members are really cool. Also the trainers are great. I hit up a couple group classes recently just because I realized I lack motivation and frankly the knowledge to pull off higher intensity full body stuff by myself, and I can say I'm really impressed with the trainers in each of these sessions. Specifically, Nikki is so cool and just really inspirational and has a lot of quality knowledge. I've been to a couple of her classes and she consistently delivers. She shared with me some helpful tips too which I've already incorporated. Generally the machines are available; only a few rare times I was limited by too many people in the weight or cardio area. One review mentioned the lack of classes, but by my standards there is an abundance of daily classes at all times of day. My wife recently checked out LA Fitness, but the group class schedule at LSAC is significantly better. So for me personally it checks all the boxes.
As constructive criticism, I do think the gym could do some improvements to the men's locker room. Some of the other CAC locations have newer locks and the air seems more breathable or cleaner. Maybe LSAC can try to get better airflow or do a deep cleaning of the carpets or something. Sometimes the locker room can get a little rank. As well the steam room can get a little hotter than I've had at other gyms. I can only last a few minutes in there. One time the wand where the steam came out kinda burned my foot as I didn't realize I was sitting right next to it. IDK if any of these issues can be prevented, but to me that would bring it up to a 5 star experience. Besides these relatively minor things, it is a great gym. For the membership price it is in my opinion the best one in the area. I definitely recommend it to others!

Chicago Athletic Clubs refuse to let you opt you out of monthly service after you've finished your contract. They refuse to not take advantage of you even after you clearly communicate not being a member afterwards.

Great club overall, however they need to switch their third party company that handles finances (ABC financial). Also, I had experienced inappropriate encounter with a staff member that never got a response from the management.
The encounter with the staff member was such that there were 5 minutes to close one evening and I was finishing up in the locker room, was the last person. The employee grunted “5 minutes till close”, while he held his cell phone up, standing in the locker room while I was changing. No one, especially employees should be on their cell phone in the locker room, especially holding it up, as for all I know, he could have been video recording or taking photos. What’s most perturbing about this is that LSAC never responded to my email describing the situation.
When I had to cancel my membership last year, I had to call their payment processor, wait on hold for a long time, then they tell you you have to write them an e-mail, and I think there were some other steps in between.
Additionally, my girlfriend had frozen her account for the pandemic, and she got charged $50 upon doing so. Fortunately her dispute allowed her to get the payment back (handled by the CC company), but it should not have happened in the first place and I wonder how many people have gotten charged without realizing.
If you're traveling out of the country for a couple months, they request you pay them money to pause your account. Why should someone have to pay for a service which they won't be using for a couple months, despite intention to use it after their return? You can cancel (again, which is quite a taxing process) then rejoin, but then you'd have to pay the joining fee again. This is very unkind to loyal members and shows that they don't care about you but just want the money.
I imagine this is not the only complaint regarding their payment company. For me this is almost enough to not want to join again, however the staff is generally quite friendly and the facilities are solid.

I recently became a member and so far I have been to four different locations. This is by far the worst. While I am in love with the Lakeview and Lincoln Park locations this one really disappointed me. When I called to inquire about the depth of the pool the front desk staff failed to mention that the gym and the pool are in different buildings which resulted in showering and putting on my swimsuit at the gym locker room, I wandered around the gym wearing swimsuit until one of the gym members told me that the pool is in a different building… and then I had to dress up again and run across the street for the aqua class and change into my swimsuit again.
The pool area was very dirty. The tiles around the pool were covered in a lot of hair and mud prints from peoples dirty feet or flip flops. I even don’t want to mention about the disaster in the locker room. Water, dirt and hair all over the floor. Dirty showers, shower caddy hardly hanging in there and can’t hold even a small bottle of body wash. Hamper overflowed with dirty towels and women didn’t have other choice but to throw the used towels on the dirty muddy floor covered in hair. Only three chairs where to put our stuff while getting dressed and undressed. No benches or anything. Ridiculous!

I like this gym. I’ve only been a member for a couple months and I’m pleased. I needed a gym where I could shower and get ready for work. It’s also wanted something very convenient to my work location so this gym fit the bill. Overall, it’s a nice gym. Some of the elliptical machines seem a bit outdated, but they’re still usable and get the job done.
My main complaint is the swampy, hot, humid, unpleasant locker rooms. Honestly, most people don’t care because they come and go, but for people who have to use it to shower and get ready for work, it’s miserable. I realize the building is old and lofty so temperature-control can be tricky at best, but I’m not letting that go as an excuse. Some days the locker room conditions are pleasant so I don’t understand how you can get it right one day and wrong so many others. At the very least, can we get an industrial fan to blow some air around. I see them at the front desk where it’s always much cooler. If they need them, imagine the locker rooms. How about a dehumidifier? Hell, I’ll buy it for you. Just do something. Very often it’s miserable down there for people who actually have to use it to get ready for work. The basement should be the coolest place in the building on hot days and let me tell ya…it’s not. You don’t even need the steam room. The locker room IS the steam room.
I know that was a lot of ranting, but I do actually recommend this gym. That said, I definitely don’t use it to its full potential. I’ve heard the classes are great. I’m just not a class person. It’s never overcrowded when I’m there – at least not yet. We’ll see what the winter brings. There's also an indoor pool, which is hard to find at Chicago gyms. I've never used it or even seen it, but if that's something you're looking for, check LSAC out!

This review is for the aquatics classes.
I was a member when the pool first opened and loved the instructors they had for water aerobics classes - I went for several years! Over time though instructors came and went, and the quality and professionalism of the instructors fell so I stopped going. Eventually I ended up going to water aerobics at the Park District and absolutely loved those classes and instructors. Due to the pandemic and lifeguard shortage they closed the pool for the summer and I needed to find another place to temporarily take classes, so I ended up back at LSAC.
What a mistake! The water aerobics instructors are sub par at best, and I personally feel they are dangerous. There was no warm up, there was no chance to 'set yourself' and safely do the exercises, it was simply flailing at high speeds for 45 minutes. I think the instructor was maybe a dance or Zumba aerobics teacher and just copied that for water aerobics - which is not how water aerobics actually works. Highly unsafe and ineffective at best.
I've switched to Galter Life Center for the summer and I'll be back at the Park District in the fall.

This is a clean neighborhood gym with a nice pool. Staff are polite. Guests seem mostly chill. The studio space is good for yoga and floor exercises. Plenty of equipments and weights. Pool length is 25 yards which seems the biggest here outside of university pools. Aesthetically this place is pleasant. Vibe feels comfortable for men and women.
Main drawbacks are group exercise offering is lacking. Yoga is substandard compared to studios and there is not a single prenatal class. Barre classes are only weekday mornings. Also pool now close at 8 or 9 and since lane reservations are hourly if you sign up for last hour you get a short session as they make you get out of pool 15 minutes before closing.
Overall this place seems reasonably convenient as an all purpose gym for pool and equipments. I will look elsewhere for yoga and group fitness classes.

A nice gym, but they do not enforce their COVID policy beyond the front desk. No distancing, I have to change my workout every time I come to avoid maskless people. The poor front desk folk will ask people to put on a mask if you tell them, but they do not look to enforce policies otherwise and there are no consequences for repeat offenders (I see the same ones every time). Obvious the problem is with a corporate policy more interested in bottom line than keeping their members safe. If you are looking for a gym to join in the new year, join somewhere else.

I loved this gym when I signed up in September during Covid because I had relocated to the area and its super convenient. It wasn't busy and people were nice, there was also a decent class schedule all things considered. Since the full reopening, the class schedule has completely changed. Spin classes are only offered during work hours now as are many of the other classes I specifically joined this gym for which I can no longer go to because I have a job. If the class schedule doesn't improve to include at least one evening spin class I will probably cancel. Way too expensive for the lack of classes and poor schedule.

I have been a member for 2 years and not once has the failing WIFI connection improved. Customer service is super quick to send emails asking four our feedback, but unwilling to make any meaningful changes. I do not recommend this gym to anyone moving to this area. It also makes me doubtful that the WIFI is any better at other CAC locations. I will likely go elsewhere at the end of this month or next if it doesn’t improve. Not everyone can afford a backup WIFI connection all the time, and this gym might assume that the predominantly wealthier clientele don’t care since they have a backup. That shows classism and discrimination on this gym’s part.

I absolutely love this gym. After reading past comments I was worried about signing a 12 month agreement, but once I got a tour of the gym and talked to Megan about the policies in place for Covid, I felt so much better. Megan was very attentive to all of my questions and was very thorough to explain the process of signing up. The classes are included in your subscription and they are amazing; you sign up virtually on the app. The teachers are very knowledgeable and want everyone to have a good/quality workout. They also give pointers and advice for those who are just starting in class, whether it’s on weight size or height for a bike in the spin class. I live about 12 minutes from the gym and walk everyday. It’s very accessible and clean. There are wash clothes stationed around the gym with hand sanitizer and cleaning product to spray down equipment before and after use. They have a cleaning crew come around and refill the hand sanitizer or the cleaning product once about every 45 minutes. They also have air purifiers and have the cleaning crew go to each room after a class and fog the room. They also have 6ft placements of the bikes or on the floors in the studios. A mask is required and I have seen them enforcing this rule. The staff at the front desk are always so nice and helpful! 10/10 recommend.

I had a billing question and Mariana was extremely friendly and explained everything so well. The problem I had turned out much much better.

To be fair, the facility itself is not bad. The issue is the predatory sales and contract practices. I spoke to a rep about joining at LSAC, and I explained that my situation is one that involves a lot of long-term travel. He told me that I could put the billing on hold during the months I would be out of town. What he never once mentioned was the $15/month fee to do so, information found in the cancellation materials. I did not receive a copy of this prior to signing the agreement, and this information is not in the agreement I signed (yes, I double-checked).
Furthermore, I signed a two-month agreement to try out the club, and would then go month-to-month. I had to leave town so I went to push off the second month, which is when I found out about the fee. So I ended up canceling my membership and wasting the $75 dollars for the second month, as I was already locked in. This is used-car-dealership level shenanigans. When I tried to write to someone and explain that I had basically been taken advantage of, I could find no email address anywhere. They make it impossible to get in touch, and if you want to get out of your contract, they make that very difficult, too. Hope you like jumping through hoops. Again, it’s a shame because the club isn’t terrible, but for me, the sketchy billing practices and pushy sales-type nonsense render it not worth it in the future.
TLDR; Read the ENTIRE cancellation clause and all agreement paperwork before signing. Don’t believe what the sales staff tell you, because they want to close a deal and will leave out pertinent financial information.

A good mix of equipment and very helpful staff. During busy hours (right after work) you may need to wait for some of the weight machines but turnover is generally pretty quick. I’ve never had to wait for a treadmill or bike. Classes are good and it’s pretty easy to jump in as a newbie

Ive been a member since they opened. It's always clean, the cleaning staff seem to never leave. It gets a little crowded during peak times but you can still wiggle your way into a space. The pool across the street is nice as well. I can't speak to the group classes outside of yoga and pilates but they seem very popular.

Nice clean gym with good updated equipment. Good teachers. If you are looking for customer service look elsewhere. Although I have not communicated very much the response is slow (weeks go by). The managers and/or staff that communicates needs a customer service 101 course.

They told me I could cancel at any time. When I went to cancel they had swindled me with an 11 month contract. Shady people working there and they won't even pick up their phone to discuss with the ghetto billing company they use (ABC). Avoid this dump at all costs.

I’ve been going to LSAC for about 6 months and it’s perfect for what I want in a gym. They have cardio equipment, weights, classes, and a sauna and a steam room!
I’ve been to gyms with more and less amenities and this place has it just right for what I actually use.
Their personal trainers are phenomenal too! I’ve been seeing Andrea about once a week for a few months and I’ve gotten so much more confident with my workout routines and physical health in general.

I hate leaving bad reviews, but I went in here to inquire about the gym. I asked if I could get a tour before investing in a membership, and was told I could not be shown the gym unless I had a membership? What sense does that make? You really can’t let me see the equipment and what you offer before I sign up? I’ve worked at gyms before and it’s normal to show people the facility before expecting them to get into a pricey membership.
Not to mention, the front staff seems depressed and rude, and almost annoyed that I bothered them with my interest. Won’t be signing up anytime soon.

Very clean facility/clean locker rooms. Group classes can get a little crowded during peak hours but there is always space on the cardio machines. Highly recommend small group training sessions. Egle is a great personal trainer if you are looking to learn about weight training or interested to learn more about running. Another selling point for me was the steam room and sauna if you want to relax after your workout.

Terrible customer service and uncomfortable vibes from all the staff. Upon walking in it already looks like the staff hate their jobs.
We were kicked out of the sauna for having our phones and listening to music. While I understand cell phone usage is limited in the locker room space - one of the staff made a point of tellin us while we were sitting in the sauna disregarding every other member also LISTENING to music in the locker room (i.e. Not talking on the phone or taking pictures) this is 2017 get with the program LSAC. People's music are on their phones.
I don't pay $70 a month to be told when I can and can't listen to music on my phone while working out. I'll be going back to LVAC.

Don't be swindled by there membership advisors if you sign up for a membership here. My gf and I were going to be moving out of state, but wanted a membership for a few months. We agreed on 6 month terms and Melissa F. explained thoroughly that we could cancel before the 6 months and just pay a small % of the remaining balance, which I was fine with. However, she failed to mention that after the 6 month terms expired, it would automatically "roll" to a month by month contract. Claimed she couldn't refund me for the extra months I was billed because "it would be unfair to the other members" Solid reasoning. Shady business practices and terrible customer service in my opinion.

I was a member here for a little over a year and absolutely loved it, only leaving when my new office came complete with a gym. The classes were always excellent (I highly recommend Spinning with Brady or Suzanne), the facilities were always clean, and I rarely had to wait for a piece of equipment. It's not the largest gym, so they don't quite have everything, but there was more than enough cardio equipment and free weights to keep everyone happy, no matter your fitness goals. The pool is a huge plus, rarely crowded and always a great temperature.
If you're in the area and seeking a gym, LSAC really is a fantastic choice.

My new second home. I love the fact that it opens up at 5 am- since I try to get the workout early in the day. They have a wide variety of classes that are included in the membership and are awesome- cycling, yoga, TRX, kick-boxing, just to name a few. The pool is great as well- it is located across the street but is very covenant.

I enjoy taking fitness classes, which is why I joined this gym and I LOVE it!! LSAC offers a wide variety of quality classes....Zumba, cardio dance, cardio sculpt, muscle toning, core, turbo kick, pilates, spinning, boxing, 10 different kinds of yoga classes, you name it! The great thing is that there are no extra fees for the classes. You can take as many as you want whenever you want. The classes are taught by great instructors-they know their stuff and are very energetic and motivating. Yes, the membership fee is a bit on the pricey side, but since I take a good amount of classes (about 3-4) a week, it's totally worth it.
In addition, the gym and locker rooms are always clean and there was never a moment where I would have to wait for a machine. I love the rain showers and glass tile in the locker rooms; the lockers with the built-in locks are a plus. The steam room I have yet to try, the sauna not too interested in.
Also, the staff if very helpful and friendly.

LSAC has been a godsend to the neighborhood. I rarely make it upstairs to use the equipment and weights because the group fitness options are OUT OF THIS WORLD! Spinning with Brady, Zumba with Miguel and Hip-Hop with Viola are all so much fun you'll forget you're even working out. Well…maybe not.
(Don't forget: There's a swimming pool across the street with its own locker room!)

When searching for a gym, I was worried LSAC would be a bit too...well...gymmy, but I was surprised to see the members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, the trainers are nothing but encouraging and there are a range of classes for all fitness levels. The gym is always clean, has plenty of machines and the locker rooms are roomy. Unless you want a sceney place to scope out a bunch o' hot bods and show off your musculature, LSAC is fantastic place to get in shape!

Decent facility, plenty of equipment and the staff are friendly and non-discriminatory. The price is steep but they offer free classes (Hot Yoga, yoga, dance stuff, zumba) and have not-free personal trainers. Even though the price is steep if you work for a decent non-profit you can knock some decent dollars off of your membership. My main suggestion for improvement to the place would be if they could extend their hours. A secondary suggestion would be that they get a basketball court. "That's not realistic!", you say? They just bought property across the street and added a pool. I think this particular Club is up and coming. The more business they get the better the facilities and overall prices are going to be.

The facility is nice, but customer service has always been sub par.
This may be a general condemnation of the gym membership industry but why do you need to go through so much to cancel a membership? I used the gym once in the 6 months after my contract ended and I have to pay for another month after canceling. I understand that in the agreement it says a 30 day notice is needed, but this clause is pretty much only there to get another payment. When the lady on the phone responds to my, albeit angry, argument with "we are a business" it makes me think their local neighborhood image is all for show.
If I had been using the facilities, or if I canceled right after my contract ended I might understand, but I was the most profitable kind of customer for 6 months and when I questioned the need for the additional payment their response was "We are a business"

Oh LSAC how I love thee!
I enjoy the number of classes offered here and they keep adding on with the demand. I also like the cardio quipment and how they have personal tv's mounted on them. The tv's have cable which is nice because I don't have cable and can catch up on my shows while working out at the same time.
The spin studio is really nice. If you're interested in trying spin for the first time go to one of Michael's classes he's great. I'm also in love with Stephanie's Friday night Zumba classes. It's Zumba but not it's more of cardio dance class with Zumba moves. It's the perfect way to start off the weekend!
The facility itself is awesome. The owners of Chicago Athletic Club have done a great job of decorating the clubs. One nice thing is the lockers have built in locks that you program with your own code. Which means you never have to worry about forgetting your lock.
