A deeply concerning experience—please read if you're a parent.
I’ve never felt more terrified in my life. Last Tuesday, I was just a few minutes late picking up my 5-year-old daughter from LoMastro after her ballet class. I had called the front desk at 4:39 PM (class ends at 4:40) to let them know I was slightly delayed because of a passing train. They assured me, “No problem, we’ll be waiting.”
When I arrived at 4:43, my daughter was gone.
No one at the front desk knew where she was. Her teacher had no idea. Panic set in as the staff started checking classrooms and restrooms. At 4:48, I called the police. Thankfully, a kind stranger found my daughter—alone, terrified, and walking along Waukegan Road, trying to find me.
LoMastro has known us for over three years. My daughter has attended since she was 2½. But despite that relationship—and despite being told I was just minutes away—they allowed a five-year-old child to walk out of their building completely unattended. They didn’t make sure she stayed safe. They didn’t even notice she was missing.
This was not just a miscommunication—it was a complete breakdown in basic child safety. I trusted this studio with my daughter. That trust is now broken.
We’ve withdrawn her from the program, and I feel obligated to share this experience with other parents. No child should ever be put in that situation again. I sincerely hope LoMastro re-evaluates their safety protocols, because this was entirely preventable.
If you have a child attending this studio, please talk to them about what to do if you’re ever late—and please ask LoMastro what steps they’ve taken to ensure this never happens again.

I want to add more details, especially after reading the owner’s response, which I feel minimizes the seriousness of what happened and is more focused on protecting the studio than fully acknowledging a life-threatening failure in basic child safety.
Let me be very clear:
My daughter never went to the restroom. She walked straight out the door, completely alone. There were only three other girls in her class and the studio was empty. When I arrived just three minutes late, there were four adults at the front desk and none of them had any idea where she was.
She wasn’t “on the sidewalk” nearby, as the owner suggested. She crossed THREE streets and was eventually found in front of CIBC Bank, which is twice as far as where they claim she was. A woman at Starbucks, who was on a work call, saw a small child crossing the street alone and called the police. That is how my daughter was found—by police, not by a staff member.
The studio did not realize she was gone until I showed up and asked where she was. I was the one who called the police in complete panic. The police found her though the call of the lady and once they realized was the same little girl they ask the lady to bring my daughter back to the studio. She was only on Sam lap, because I was running in the middle of the parking lot near Chase Bank screaming her name, and the lady came back from Waukegan Rd.
A couple of hours later, the manager called to apologize and offer me a refund for the class. After I alerted other moms, and word started to spread, the owner finally emailed me to say sorry and mention that “new security measures” had already been put in place.
This situation wasn’t a misunderstanding—it was a complete failure of the most basic responsibility a children's studio has: keeping kids safe.
It’s terrifying to think what could have happened. This was a life-and-death situation. I’m sharing all of this not out of anger, but because every parent deserves to know the full truth and ask hard questions about how their children are being cared for.
Please don’t assume your child is safe just because they’re in a familiar place. Talk to the studio. Demand to know exactly what their safety policies are—and how they’re enforced. Don’t wait for a wake-up call like I had.

It took the owner all of 4 hours to respond. In the time it took there to falsely represent my family, she could have called me….back in June. Just to be clear, “threatening” to put up an honest review on social media is not a threat. Reputational harm implies that something is stated that is false. The bottom line is that my child’s needs were not met, the owner could not care less, and when we dared to ask to speak about it, we were shut down. So when the original review was put up, she hid behind some language in her “code of conduct” and kicked my innocent kids out. And now the world will know. It is ironic because she begged us to write positive reviews about her in the past.

If the safety of the community is so important, my child did not feel safe there at all.

Here are photos of a review that I put up of LoMastro and the owner’s response. I attempted to have a conversation with the owner in June that I was told would happen. This was about my child being held back at the same level as the year before. I simply wanted a discussion. She then refused to speak. When there were still issues in the fall (and shame on me for not pulling my kids from the studio when warning signs came up in the spring), I again asked for a phone call to discuss difficulties my child was experiencing. She again declined. After telling the owner that she needed to get back to me or I would pull my kids from the studio and write an honest review about her studio, I did write the review. When she saw the review she kicked out my kids. She said that by telling her I would write a review, that was threatening her safety. She then said that the review tarnished her studio’s reputation, even though the review was entirely honest and I have the documentation to back it up.

I took down the review in a moment of desperation and love for my kids as I asked her not to take out her ill will toward me on my kids. Instead, she ignored me and threw my kids on the street, figuratively speaking. Now that she cannot hold me hostage over my kids, the truth deserves to be told.

She will no doubt craft a response here that is both vague and demeaning, but in the end, the truth always wins. I hope folks do their research and put their children in a more supportive environment with a more caring human.

When faculty on vocation, sub-teacher Session Handled Poorly
sub-teacher made zero effort to make the student feel welcomed.

We signed up for the summer session based on the positive reviews here and a close friend's recommendation. However, we were surprised and disappointed by one incident at the studio how they handle the session requiring another teacher to sub.
Normally with other practice, we will be informed one week in advance there will be a sub-teacher. (even with mom/baby, mom/toddler classes we've been!)

In summary, the faculty staff does vary, and not everyone is warm and welcoming.
One staff member who was covering while the main teacher was out of town DID NOT even try to greet my daughter, introduce himself, or welcome her into the studio.
Every child is unique, I don't think it's very kind to expect every child opening up immediately and joining with a new staff into the studio without knowing who this person is.
I am actually very proud of my 6 years old being able to make judgement and decided not to going in NOT even knowing this person's name...
and similar situation happened as we had a make up class at Midtown Tennis, my 6 yrs old had no issue working with a new coach with the big smile on his.

When we shared our concerns with the management, we received a quick response; however, the answer we received towards our concern was filled with inaccuracies. The management's comment on the team making effort to welcome the students are not true and it really depends on the teacher.
We decided to complete the summer session we signed up as we had no issue with the main teacher.

I was very disappointed with this institution after sending my daughter here for one semester. My daughter was in competitive rthymic gymnastics (invitational) since she was in kindergarten and now she is in 4 grade. She had been competing state level so she had very intense training background for rthymic gymnastics which is dance made up with gymnastics and ballet. It was heart breaking but she decided to quit rthymic gymnastics because she decided to focus on something else for her future but still wanted to continue to dance especially ballet. She was placed in level 2 and it was fine with me. However she said the class was too boring every sing time after the lesson. She mentioned that during the trial, they never asked her to do some movements (I do not know all the dance terms) and she could not show what she had trained from the other institution because they did not ask her to perform during the trial. I asked for another trial for re-Val because of her background and the past training it was legitimate for her to feel boring in level 2. I asked for this in September, October, November and December and they said they were still evaluating students so wait, and I believed them. Just last week (January 2025) they told me my daughter can’t even have trial lesson for another evaluation. I felt my voice was never heard. Although other students’ parents there told me I should talk to Loren, who is the owner, I was never able to get hold of her. I guess other parents were easily approaching her but I never got a chance even after email, phone calls, and talking to the front desk. I was willing to sign up for pay for another evaluation, sign up private lessons (I told them in email) do any thing so my daughter can actually enjoy lesson; however I felt my kid was not welcome in this community and never been seriously taken care of.

Lo Mastro is a wonderful place where students not only learn to dance but also grow in confidence and self-expression. The instructors create a supportive and inclusive environment, helping each student feel valued and capable. Beyond dance skills, the studio fosters strong friendships, bringing students together as a close-knit community.

LoMastro Performing Arts Academy is an excellent dance school. My two daughters are currently attending, and due to their school and other activities, it's been challenging to find the right times. However, I've had many discussions with the academy staff, and they’ve been incredibly helpful in finding us suitable class times. Even when certain times weren’t available, they made every effort to accommodate our schedule as best as possible.

Also, when I looked into other dance schools, it was nearly impossible to start in November or December. But here, we just discuss with the staff, and they find an available time for us, allowing my child to start right when she wants to. We actually began in December, and there was a class available, so the staff and teachers helped girls start happily. It’s been a wonderful experience for us, and my girls been enjoying their time there immensely.

The academy offers a wide range of classes, and the teachers are fantastic. My two daughters are currently attending, and they’re both enjoying it immensely. We love LoMastro Performing Arts Academy , highly recommend it.

I've been taking my daughter to Lomastro Performing Arts for two years now, and it's been an incredible experience! Initially, I wasn't ready for daycare, so she joined the enrichment club, which was perfect for her age. Now, she's in ballet, and I’m amazed at how much she’s learned—I can actually see her progress in her movements!

One of the things I appreciate the most is how safe the environment is. I love that I can watch her in real-time through the camera on my phone, no matter where I am. It gives me peace of mind knowing she's in a secure and caring space while having fun and learning so much!

The staff at the front desk are always very nice and welcoming. One of them speaks Spanish, and we absolutely love her! ❤️ It’s such a comfort to know we’re part of such a warm and supportive community.

The classrooms and bathrooms are always clean and organized!!!

I have had my 4 daughters at Lomastro for the last 10+ years and it has become a second home to them. A safe and friendly environment with great results. We started with mom and tot classes and evolved to pointe ballet classes. Many years of Nutcrackers, recitals and competitions with friends who became family. We have been very pleased with the instruction and faculty at Lomastro!

LoMastro has been our dance home for ongoing eleven years & my daughter has truly enjoyed every moment. The evidence of the powerful role LoMastro & faculty have played in her life shows through her excelled growth in dance, respected mentors she has found in teachers and the formation of very close dance friends. The indelible studio experience that LoMastro has provided from age three to now almost fourteen has shaped the young woman she is and has made me a very proud dance mom. Bravo, LoMastro!

I wish we had found LoMastro sooner! We moved from Chicago where my daughter danced at Gus Giordano, so our standards were (apparently) pretty high. LoMastro is THE ONLY full-fledged studio on the North Shore that offers *all* styles of dance, emphasizes the importance of ballet, offers robust recital and competition experiences, and is friendly, welcoming, organized, and professional. (And manages to dress and teach choreography that doesn't sexualize young girls, even in hip hop.)

We've left three dance "studios" (if you can call them that) before finding LoMastro. I run an a cappella competition for 10,000 students each year, so it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to organization and professionalism, quality and content of education and performances. But LoMastro, I am *taking notes*! You are amazing and we are so lucky to have found you.

Thank you!

LoMastro Performing Arts Academy was not just a dance studio for our daughter; it was a second home. Through her love of dance, and the equal love and support that was shown to her by the administration, teachers and staff, her dancing took flight. As she improved, so did the rigor and high expectations by all involved. Ella learned how to not only be a wonderful dancer, she learned lifelong traits such as leadership, integrity, time-management, how to receive and give meaningful feedback, and to build confidence and relationships that will last a lifetime. We are forever grateful to LoMastro, and for all of these positive dancer qualities, that will help Ella in all areas of her life.

I have two girls in different places in their journey through the dance world, and there are wonderful teachers and options for both of them at Lomastro. For the student who is a natural, picks things up quickly, and loves dance they have a wonderful company for her to be a part of. They compete at competitions and expose the girls to ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip hop. Teachers are wonderful and choreography and costumes are darling and age appropriate. Every other year they do the nutcracker and it’s beautifully done. For my other daughter who just wants to continue to take a few classes and develop slowly we just choose things a la carte. The staff has been very good at helping me find the right things for both of my girls and their individual needs.

I love this place! My daughter is so happy here with the teachers. It's perfect for little girls, and I'll enjoy seeing the classes as she gets over and they evolve a bit more as well. 5 stars, very happy.

LoMastro has been a great experience for my daughter and helped shape her into the dancer she is today! She always looked forward to going to the studio. Her teachers were always there to motivate and encourage her. I highly recommend this studio for dancers in the area!

Two of my daughters attend LoMastro and I cannot wait for my youngest to join them. My older daughter loves to dance and looks forward to her Kids Bop class every week. My younger daughter is in Enrichment club and says she misses her teacher, Miss Gloria all the time and is excited to show me all the arts and crafts from the day. The enrichment club is such a great alternative to preschool and perfect my daughter. It’s a community at LoMastro, and everyone is engaging, kind, and enthusiastic.

LoMastro has been the most welcoming, positive experience for my 3 year old. I am so happy to have found a studio with so much talent, kind and welcoming staff, and clean covid precautions set in place. I look forward to seeing my sweet 3 year old on the big stage soon!
