We provide Muscle Activation Techniques® (MAT®) & one-on-one personal training in our private studio near Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg.
We specialize in working with women with osteoporosis or osteopenia who want to build stronger muscles & bones as well as high-level basketball players & athletes who want to prevent or recover from injuries or optimize their performance.
We help address muscle issues & strengthen muscles for people who have chronically tight muscles; who have low back pain, hip pain, knee pain, foot & ankle pain, shoulder pain, or neck pain; or who find general exercise painful.
We are certified in the highest levels of Muscle Activation Techniques®, including MATRx, MAT Athlete, & MATRx Stim.

Julie is amazing. She resolved an annoying knee problem for me last year. She created a personal training workout for me that was very specific to the needs of my sport. She is currently helping me recover from a shoulder/elbow/wrist injury.

I am getting treated by Charlie since 2016. This is my go-to place for MAT treatments. I've always been impressed with the insane amount of MAT that Charlie can do in 1hour, and he always delivers.
Charlie is friendly, knowledgeable and always makes you feel welcomed.
I’ve never walked out of this place without my problem being solved.
MAT is amazing treatment and this is where I choose to go!

The best thing I've ever done is to get MAT treatments. I have worked with Charlie for over a year now and I don't think I'll ever stop . A long time SI joint issue is under control and I feel extremely stable. Whenever I have a little ache in any part of my body, I know a muscle is turned off and Charlie can turn it back on! I have referred many people to Charlie as a result of the success I've had.

I’ve worked with Charlie for 5 years — he’s phenomenal! I’ve tried many different modalities, and nothing has been more effective than consistent MAT sessions to help me feel my best. I’ve been working consistently with Julie for the past 2 years, and I consider her my fitness coach. Muscle Activation Technique is one of the best functional pain management strategies I’ve ever done. Working with someone as knowledgeable, friendly, and driven as Julie makes the treatments even more successful: less pain, more strength, more functionality in my daily life. I would recommend this to anyone with structural integrity issues like low back pain or muscle soreness/aching. MAT speaks for itself in how fast and efficient it is at regaining neuromuscular integrity and reducing dysfunction and soreness.

I recently completed 5 muscle activation sessions with Charlie Cates at their studio in Schaumburg. I did not go in for a specific issue, rather to be sure that my body was functioning optimally (I am an active 58 year old and my "classic chassis" needs to be maintained!). From the moment I walked in the door, I was impressed by their professional studio. It's a calm, welcoming environment and I felt like I'd found the right place the moment I arrived. As for their skills, I left my sessions feeling great and confident knowing that I was on the right track. Charlie thoroughly explained the MAT principles and guided me through each session. I highly recommend Charlie, Julie and Muscle Activation Schaumburg for their health service. My post session workouts and daily activities are accomplished with much more freedom of movement. I am also a regular listener to their "Exercise is health" podcast. Muscle Activation Schaumburg provides the tools to promote my most significant asset, my personal health.

I was introduced to MAT Schaumburg through mutual connections. At first I though this is just another health and wellness provider that doesn't actually fix anything long term. Once I went for my initial appointment, Charlie, was very informative and explained the difference between Muscle Activation and Chiropractors. I came here because I had severe knee pain due to running a full Marathon a few months prior. At first I thought that the pain would go away over time. This was not the case.
Then I went to Muscle Activation with Charlie and through the process I was able to start walking and running and cycling again without any severe pain. While this is not going to fix severe injuries, if you are willing to put in the time you will see improvement.
While the therapy was very successful I can't say that there is no discomfort at all. I guess I should get it checked out by a doctor.
Overall I went in with low expectations and came out in great shape. Charlie was able to really educate me about what he was doing and the long term requirements for staying away from injury through Muscle Activation. I can highly recommend their services.

I’m not an athlete, just a regular person that enjoys fitness, but my hip and back pain was getting in the way of day to day activities. I started MAT with Charlie and after the first session the pain lessened and I walked and moved so much easier. It's been six weeks and the results have been life changing. I didn't even have to know what MAT was. Charlie guides you through all the steps in a one-on-one session. Their evening hours are great so I am able to go after work. I would definitly recommend them.

I have just hit my 1 year mark of training with Julie Cates at Muscle Activation Schaumburg. I am so very happy with my results so far!! I have lost a visible and trackable amount of fat as well as changed the make us of my body mass by seeing Julie 1 time per week and adding other activities to my exercise and diet regimen as suggested by her. She is a great trainer with a passion for what she does and a personal touch along with the professionalism and expertise to change peoples lives. I recommend Julie or her partner Charlie to anyone that is ready to work for what you want in your health goals, if you prefer a personal one on one training experience, and if you do not want to be part of a giant gym. She is a great accountability partner to help get you from where you are to where you truly want to be. Highly recommend this organization!

This technique is a unique method of working out. Julie is energetic and fun to be around. You can't stop yourself from feeding off her energy. Charlie and Julie are endless supply of knowledge to assist you in getting your body to the level it is capable. I hurt my back and was having a hard time walking so rather than working out Julie suggested i come anyway to work on the effected areas. I walked out of there a new man.
If you are looking to treat your body the way it was intended to work then I suggest that you call MAS and give them a couple sessions. You'll be hooked like I am... See you there!

I have worked with Julie at Muscle Activation Schaumburg initially to work on nagging right leg and foot injury that has bothered me for the past year. After working with Julie the past few months with MAT and strength training exercises, my right leg and foot has never felt better. I can now do stairs and jog on the treadmill with no difficulty or pain. I highly recommend Julie and the staff at Muscle Activation Schaumburg for your MAT and/or Personal Training needs.

Julie and Charlie are awesome. I use to lift weights often and once I turned 50 it seemed my joints would ache so I stopped. Julie asked me to give her a try...so I did. I feel and see the results I use to get but no pain in my joints! Julie is amazing and even when I really don't feel like going in to workout, I leave feeling grateful to have met her! If you want results give her a call...she's the BEST.

I have been training with Julie Errington since the fall of '15 and my experience has been outstanding to date. I had a few chronic issues when I started with my back and feet and have had really positive benefits from MAT plus the core training. I've tried other training methods in the past and believe I have now found exactly what's right for me. Julie provides continuous feedback and support throughout the training experience and has tailored my workout to help me achieve positive results. The ultimate acid test of my progress came last weekend when I was able to donate a bunch of clothes to charity that were too big! It's been a great experience for me and I can only offer my highest recommendation to anyone looking for a truly personalized training experience.

I have been seeing Julie for nearly a year and a half now and ever since then, I have only seen increasing improvements in my athletic performance. Having been involved in sports since the age of 5, including playing rugby for over 10 years, I have sustained a variety of injuries. Since retiring from rugby nearly 7 years ago, I took up refereeing the sport and managed to achieve a great deal of success in becoming a National Panel referee for USA Rugby. I first started seeing Julie because of increasing lower back, hip and foot pain, which I felt were starting to affect my performance. I was doing physical therapy for almost 6 months prior to that and even received a cortisone injection in my back, which yielded nothing. Once I got into regular sessions with Julie, those issues greatly diminished to the point where not only did the frequency and magnitude of pain and discomfort decrease immensely, I saw actual improvements in my performance as a referee. Giving MAT a shot and seeing someone as dedicated, intelligent and determined as Julie was one of the best decisions I ever made, as it has allowed me to continue my career as one of the top referees in the country.
