I very much enjoyed going to this gym as it was in such a convenient location close to where I live.

That is...until the pandemic happened. It seems that they just closed out of nowhere - providing absolutely no updates to members on when or if they would reopen (and from what I'm seeing it looks like I'm not alone). My card last got charged at the end of April but since then, I haven't seen any charges pop up so this hasn't been an issue for me. I've attempted to get in touch with the owners to verify that my membership got cancelled but the phone line is completely deactivated. Meaning there's no way to get in touch with anybody on phone or online.

Really disappointed...

My husband has called and emailed dozens of times over the course of two months to cancel his membership and hasn't received a single response or acknowledgement. They currently have no voicemail or answering service on their advertised phone line. Meanwhile, in the midst of the pandemic, the gym is closed—but STILL CHARGING MEMBERSHIP FEES. So they are unreachable and unusable, but still charging for their services. We had to contest charges with the bank in order to recoup our cash. Also, the facilities smell like sweaty underwear.

Frequented this gym for about 3 years cause I live basically right next to it. Always thought it was just fine. I don't need a gym with the best everything, just something of everything. Had very few complaints until I tried to cancel my membership when they continued to charge my card through the pandemic. I get it, they still have expenses, but refusing to return my calls or emails reeks of greed and sliminess. A friend of mine had a similar experience when he tried to cancel last year, pre-pandemic. They continued to charge him for months after he cancelled. Do not give these people your money.

Zero response from emails and phone calls during this covid-19 mess, but I’m still getting charged a monthly fee to a closed gym.
I’ve been sending emails and calling for nearly 2-weeks, phone calls never goes to a voicemail and nobody replies to emails.
Great job handling this issue!

Good luck getting any response from them. They don’t respond to calls, emails or Facebook messages. Not a very friendly gym either. I’d look elsewhere if you’re looking for a gym to join. Other gyms will at least answer your call to make sure you won’t leave them. Might have to contact the BBB at this point.

Has everything you need at a very affordable price. Staff is friendly, machines are clean, never crowded when I go there. My suggestion to management would be to keep their website up to date and get filtered water fountains where you can also fill up your water bottle.

All in all, great facility. I wish I joined sooner

They'll constantly try to charge you for months *following* the cancellation of your membership. It's a protracted process of calling them for refund or disputing it with you credit card company there after. Never faced this anywhere, it's ridiculous.

Cancelling this membership has been a nightmare. I was called about renewing and told them no that I was moving out of state. They noted this in their system yet I have now received bills twice. Each time I have called to remind them and they’ve noted I did not renew. They are attempting to charge me for two memberships on the most recent bill. Save your money and go elsewhere because they will never let you go.

1 YEAR UPDATE:
I left. They didn’t change or improve anything.

6 MONTH UPDATE:
Free weights are still never organized by staff. Most of the time you see everybody working there sitting at the front desk when you come in. Also I’ve mentioned to them about broken equipment (treadmills) and lack of cleaning spray anywhere and neither item has been addressed/fixed. On the positive side you can always get on the equipment you want to even if it’s busy.

Original Review
Overall it’s a decent place for the price and not much waiting around for equipment. They have so much stuff stuck in the gym it’s hard to walk around and I’ve found stuff that’s broke that hasn’t been taken out of service or marked. They don’t go around and keep the weights organized (see picture). Also the guest passes are a joke, just throw them out. You can’t take someone more than once or a friend from out of town. Chicago is a place my friends would like to visit. I’ve never seen so many restrictions on one. Might as well not even have them. The person that signed me up didn’t inform me of any of the restrictions on the guest passes and was like “here you and your buddy can come together a few more times”

It was convenient when I lived in the neighborhood because it was right across the street. There are a lot of free weights and machines and during the times I went, I never had a problem working out or having to wait for a machine. I would complain about the amenities, I believe the water fountains could be updated to be eco-friendly and filtered. I moved about an hour away and now have a great gym on the property. When I called to cancel my membership, I thought it would be as easy as sending a copy of my lease and pay my last month, but nope, I have to pay a cancellation fee and my last month upfront. So they'll make us jump through hoops and pay even more because they don't want us to cancel. There should be a law that gym memberships are pay by month and NEVER contract. If there was a poll, I'm confident that's the #1 issue they have with people that want to cancel, when they can just make it easy, but instead choose to create an obstacle, stress, and a waste of time. It really is a shame.
*UPDATE* 2019-06-28
IF what you say is true, what about those who opt to contract because at that time in their life their current lifestyle permitted it. However, things may change that prevents them from following through with their contract. You reply back with claims that we both know are accurate, but in your favor. If you really cared about the people who pay to keep your lights on and food in your mouth, why not allow contracts to be voided without penalty? Please provide me with a logical explanation that all your other members can read here. I mean, it cannot be a good explanation since I cannot see ANY reason why NOT to let people easily and without penalty cancel their contract. I ended up getting hit with an unexpected negative financial situation primarily due to illness, which is no one else's business but I'm throwing it out there to provide clarity on why I was so passionate about this situation.
I called to cancel and I was penalized (having to pay a couple months worth in order to cancel) and I could not afford to pay what they expected me to pay just to cancel the contract.
No one cared to even ask the reason why I was canceling. I was forced to continue making the monthly payments until now, 1 more month to go! Yay!
On top of that, you made a killing off of me, I went a total of maybe 10 times during the course of the contract. You should technically be reimbursing me for charging me for a service I did not even use. Utility companies reimburse for what you don't us so what makes you so special? Maybe it's the expensive lifestyle you and your spouse choose to live with your fancy car parked in the parking lot...what type of car is that anyways...A Bently? Oh, and I'm sure you have a nice home to match. Is it that lifestyle that prohibits you from being ethical and fair?

Great place. Looks small and unassuming, but has so much to offer for a super affordable price. Their childcare room sold me, but having a sauna/steam room, running track and a pool are all great perks. Knocked off a star because there’s basically no air conditioning in the whole place.

SAUNA NOT A GYM. Cheap management. Zero air conditioning summer has already started at this wannabe upscale gym. Walk the extra blocks to a real gym for the money unless you Wanna sweat just walking in the door. You can imagine what it smells like and you're likely to see the staff working out instead of cleaning.

In summer 2018 a gym member was carried out on a stretcher due to heat stroke. Be warned.

Read every 1 and 2 star review on this page and you'll see Uptown Fitness conned EVERY SINGLE ONE out of money. They have 4 formal complaints with the Better Business Bureau. They cannot pretend for a second (as the owner's replies assert) that they are upfront about their contracts or billing. They do not properly document phone calls and cannot be trusted to uphold anything that isn't explicitly documented in writing. Nobody wants that experience from a gym, and I wouldn't expect that kind of treatment from my doctor, bank, or insurance company, let alone a gym.

My partner's 1-year prepaid membership expired. When the gym tried to bill his expired credit card to renew the membership as month-month, he indicated that he wanted to cancel his membership. Jackie said she would cancel the membership. A month later, Jackie called back to demand two months of "late payment" and claimed no memory of the previous phone call and said she made no record of it at the time. She also refused to cancel the membership until the new fees had been paid. After speaking to the manager and explaining the situation the next day, he was still forced to pay $70 (two months membership) because of hearsay with the first attendant. This isn't a mistake. As of today exactly 25% of their google reviews make the same claim. The gym knows exactly what they are doing. They extort their members, make false statements, do not keep proper records, and rely on loopholes built into their contract to squeeze as much money as possible out of unsatisfied members who try to leave. Do not deal with Uptown Fitness, and warn your peers if they are considering signing up.

This incident will be reported to the BBB and I encourage any future reviewers to do the same with their own issues.

Take a tour of the facility before committing to a membership and be detail oriented. Don't be afraid to try out the equipment you know you will use the most often. From my experience, a lot of the workout items are missing or broken. The bikes on the second level have missing pedal straps which make it hard to bike properly. The dumbbells are never where you expect them to be and sometimes without a pair. They are also missing dumbbell weights you would expect to have in a set (they had one set of 5 lb dumbbells for the whole gym). The medicine balls are sometimes in their normal spot, often not, which makes it hard to have a consistent workout from one day to the next. I went searching one day for the 6 lb medicine and it was literally no where in the gym- I even asked the front desk staff.

PROS - Sauna and steam room- so nice for the winter months. Fitness class staff are really kind and get you excited about working out. There is a large wooden platform with mats and balls you can do your own workout routines without feeling crowded. Access to the 'posing pool' on the rooftop of the apartment building just east of the fitness center. Available during the summer months but only on weekdays and no holidays. The facility is also very sterile- they clean the floors everyday (not sure about the equipment)

Convenience rather than quality convinced me to try out a membership here. I paid cash after hearing some of the stories from other reviewers getting charged after their membership was cancelled. Consider negotiating the cost of your membership. The staff is not a problem here- all of them I've interacted with are kind and helpful and you often see them working out throughout the day. I blame the business owners lack of responsibility to properly maintain equipment and an assumed disregard to listening to customer suggestions (they do have a suggestion box I tried using as an outlet but to no avail). I ultimately decided to take my money and business elsewhere.

Reading the reviews on here, there is very consistent theme, which is that this place is not honest with their customers or contracts. I signed up for a one year contract that expired is September and was assured that it was a one year contract with no automatic rollover. Now find out I have been charged for September and told that "I should have read the small print on the contract". On top having to pay for Sept AND October, they send the "unpaid" fees to a collection agency when the payment wasn't even 30 days overdue so probably will effect my credit rating for sometime to come. You get what you pay for and the gym was dirty, the water fountains never worked, sunbeds rarely if worked, and the showers and steam room were so dismal that 95 percent of the people forego showering ( hence maybe the smell?) . I knew this about the gym when I joined and still joined because the equipment if good ( old, but your muscles don't know if barbells are old) - but very disappointed in being charged two months fees when I clearly only ever signed up for a one year contract. I can only hope they don't charge my account again and I have to get my lawyers involved. Also would have though they would have given my a call, before turning over a less than 30 day "overdue" bill to a collection agency,,, crazy management to add injury to insult

Disappointed with this gym. I was lied to when signing up, they will tell you what you want to hear then mess you up. The girls in the office, nothing better to do than to call and hound you for payment. I have no problems paying when things make sense but when it does not?

I was supposed to be on a month to month with no obligation to pay further should something occur; with proven documentation. Well I had a slight change in residence and the same sales person went back on his word. Reading other reviews, I realized this has been the reality of everyone who signed up. I know I’m not crazy and def remember the words of this guy who signed me up. They have done the same to others on here. Not surprised!!!

Outdated gym, peeling walls in women’s locker room and dirty shower curtains. Same stains in shower curtains for weeks with an awful smell. It wasn’t good when it was World Gym then and no better as Uptown fitness now. The same people and screwed up system to trap members in. You can have your cancelation fee now. Never again Uptown fitness and I’ll make sure everything is written down if ever have to deal with you all again. Don’t think so!

How do you all feel reading the horrible reviews by so many people you all disappointed? Do better before you guys lose it all. Smh

You know how people say they’d drag their balls across a mile of broken glass just to hear a hot chick fart through a walkie talkie? This place is like that... except it’s Amy Schumer who’s farting through that walkie talkie. I would rather take fitness advice from someone on “my 600 pound life” before these chumps. No one has any clue what they’re talking about. And that includes everyone who tries to encourage your sign-up. They left me many guarantees on the table that were not done shortly after sign-up. I was told no contracts, strictly month-month payments & commitments. Low & behold after a few months of working out here (and many days of disappointment & pesky employees bugging me while working out) I realized I wanted to cancel. However I was told I could not cancel & would be charged for the remaining months. The math came out to a 15-month contract, not even 12 or 6.
Never giving them my business again & I hope no one else does.

Shocked at the dishonesty of this place.
I had to sign a year-long contract to join. Ok, fine, lots of gyms do that now. BUT.
I called about two months before the year was up to make sure that my membership would NOT renew. A staff member told me that she would place a note on my account to make sure the membership did not roll over.
At the end of my year-long contract, I was surprised when my monthly dues were again withdrawn from my account. I called THAT SAME DAY and explained the mistake. I was told an employee with the billing department would follow up with me.
Long story short, they called back after the weekend and informed me that my membership had automatically renewed. I did not receive any kind of notice that this was taking place - no email, no text/call - nothing.
I explained that Id called in advance and requested my membership not be renewed. I was told that, since I did not have the name of the staff member I’d spoken with, they couldn’t help me. The billing department employee told me she would “see what she could do” and call me back. Never called back, and I was never refunded the money.
So as far I’m concerned, this gym literally STOLE MY MONEY. From the start, the staff was pushy and unhelpful, but I was honestly surprised they’d stoop this low.
If you’re looking for a gym in the area, join XSport. I joined after I left here, and the pricing is similar, they’re 24 hours, no year long contracts required, and (hopefully) they’re not thieves. Also, Xsport is a MUCH nicer, newer gym. Uptown Fitness was easily THE WORST gym experience I’ve ever had.

Update:
After posting this review, I received an extremely rude email from the gym essentially stating that the contract includes automatic rollover of membership and that I was at fault for not reading the terms more carefully.

The fact that an employee explicitly told me that, per my request, my contract WOULD NOT renew was ignored.

The email also told me that I would be refunded the amount I was charged for the extra month. This NEVER HAPPENED.

I’m not sure what else I can say to illustrate how dishonest and unprofessional the management of this gym is.

Uptown fitness 's staff is not properly trained on front desk resulting in me having to pay for their neglegence- I was told my account was canceled and then proceeded to get charged, when I brought it to the account managers attention what happened she told me that it was all hear say and I can't prove anyone told me my membership was terminated and that I still had to pay- when I refused to pay she said they wouldn't canceled my memberahip-that was month to month until I paid. So basically this place practices extortion tactics and to make it worse when I was asking to speak to a manager or the owner they refused to let me speak to them or give me their name or information and then when I went to the front desk to ask I came to find out that the owner was sitting there listening to the entire crazy situation and allowed her employee to speak to me the way she did and extort money from me. Have had an overall poor experience with former world gym, now uptown fitness in this location. They use very unpleasant guerilla tactics to get you to sign up which leaves you with a bad feeling of being pressured into signing up. As a member I have found that while the gym is decently equipped, the classes that I was most interested in, take place in an open space rather than a secluded room. As a consequence, you have class in the middle of machines and people working out/passing through, the temperature is poorly controlled, and the sessions that are a little more calm like yoga loose most of their essence since there is sound pollution and very hard to detach from the general gym environment. They should really have a separate space for the classes.
The biggest complaint is that they outsource their payments to third party system called ASF INTERNATIONAL which is briefly put awful. If you look them up you'll see they have terrible reputation for customer care. It's very hard to get out of the contract or to deal with them even after cancellation takes place as they keep posting charges that are difficult to contest.
It's a very poor practice to be using these types of companies and I feel it's an important factor to be aware of when you consider signing up.
Please be very careful with your contract and read the small print, you cannot cancel online but need to follow specific procedures even as your contract is month to month (such as mine was).
I finally got out (I hope!) of the contract and overall had a negative experience with this gym. I think it can be better for others if they are very careful signing up and negotiating the contract.

We were looking for places desperately and I suggested we go into the gym and ask. We did. The woman at the desk said, "No, the bathroom is for our members only." Where was her humanity? My husband was later looking for a gym and said he should join that one because it's in walking distance. I said no, please don't and told him the story. He has not joined. So I'm happy if WGF has a thriving membership, but it will never include me or my circle. Not to mention the place looks smelly.

Great value. I don't know why there's all these bad reviews. In life you get what you pay for. And for the price, this place is awesome. I've been a member here for 5 years and never had a complaint.

I've been a member here for 2 years and plan on staying a member. I love this gym, I drive 10 minutes out of my way when I could easily go to Xsport on southport, closer to where I live. I actually did a month long trial Xsport and it just wasn't comparable to World Gym. It looks fancier is all. At WG, the machines are in good shape, plenty of them too so you don't have to wait. The staff is awesome and really laid back but do a great job of tending to your needs and wants. I'm surprised to see the negative comments on here honestly. I've had a great experience thus far. Lastly, they have a great membership deal.

Plus it's located next to Jewel, so I can easily grab groceries when I'm done :).

For what you pay, gym is horrible. Wobbly machines, must which don't work properly. Wifi never works, only open until 11 and 8 on the weekends, and have no towels for the cost of any other gym, you get towels and a year round pool!

I will say, staff is nice.

As a former employee I can safely say stay away from this gym. I had my money stolen from me by the manager, and every time a member tried to cancel their membership I would sit there and watch as my manager harassed them trying to get them to stay. Everything is unorganized and equipment sat for months without being repaired. Save the stress and go 2 miles south to quads gym or LA Fitness on Lawrence ave.

When I came to The States for the first time, I started going to this gym. After some time I wanted to stop working out but these people (if you can call them humans) did NOT let me do that. They loved stealing my money for which I was working very hard. As all emigrants I had a low payed job and also was helping my family back home. They took advantage of the fact that I was just an emigrant and they were requiring me proof that I moved otherwise I could not have a reason to stop paying them even that I was not going to work out anymore. I kept paying them for six months without using it. I am still an emigrant, but not stupid. Next month they gonna have to come to court for what they did to me four years ago. Stealing is a crime. They stole my money so they are criminals and they deserve this. Worst gym you can choose.

The reviews on this gym don't reflect how I feel in the least. They have great equipment and plenty of it. it's a gym where people get their work out in and go home. If your looking to socialize go some place else.... like a bar. also, show me another gym that has a indoor track for the price of this one. It has always been clean and well maintained.... Great gym

Friendly staff, good classes. I love the free tanning in the winter time, however it could be cleaner

Ive been a member of world gym for a year now. The price is great, the facilities are nice and clean and its almost always empty when i go, Yay! Also, during the summer the Pool, which is connected to the condo building next door is gorgeous and huge, with a deep end at 10 feet, and plenty of sunbathing spots.

The weirdest gym I have ever been to. While the weights, locker room and common areas are a mess, the staff is too busy talking to each other or browsing Facebook. I am not OCD, but I used to have to tidy up the place just to be able to work out. It bugged me so bad that I called to see if I could work there part time just one day a week to organize. Yeah, it's just a gym. But with so many more options in the Chicago area. your money is wisely spent elsewhere.

While I was a member of the gym, I can rate the service at good-great...I love their classes, I was treated nicely by the front desk and found the facilities fine.

The poor service came when I had to jump through hoops to get out of the contract upon my move. Connie in their Corporate office completely lacks customer service and seemed bothered to be working in a position where she must explain accounts to customers.

Overall, the gym is a great solution as long as you have the intention of riding the contract all the way through.

Make sure you read the contract and don't trust what they say. They will lie to get you to sign.

I think people only publish bitter complaints on here! I have been a member here for 7 years. I have seen them consistently add new machines, replace and upgrade equipment and keep up with the times. The trainers I have met there are friendly. It is an amazing price! I rarely see a broken machine. So what do you want from a gym? My friends pay double and triple what I pay - and for what? A little bigger gym perhaps? I don't know. I think World Gym on Montrose is a great deal and a very good gym.

I was very excited to move into my new apartment and to find World Gym right there. I tried to call them up and ask about their prices and membership and they would not give me any information, instead ignored my questions, told me to come into the gym, and then "mysteriously" hanging up on me. They've called me every day for the last four days while I'm at work. I was excited to go to the gym but now I'm am so turned off at how rude and disrespectful they are. I would NEVER go there!
