Horrible customer service.
This is my first time ever leaving a comment, but the experience was bad enough that I had to share. I was using this gym regularly, and they charged me for an extra month without any notice or explanation. Never told me i have to do all this BS process of canceling membership and I ended up paying almost $90 for nothing.

Overall, really disappointing. I would recommend avoiding this gym if you can.

West Loop Athletic Club is truly one of Chicago’s best-kept secrets! The gym is spotless, and the range of classes and amenities is unbelievable for the price. The ladies’ locker room feels secure and spa-like, with a relaxing sauna and steam room experience. The pool and hot tub are an added bonus. Whether you’re into lifting or cardio, this gym has it all. Highly recommend!

Really crap gym. But even worse than the subpar facilities is the customer service experience. They insisted on charging me for another month when I canceled my membership. Their 30 day notice period ensures that you are locked in to paying for an additional month as soon as your invoice goes through. Basically $89 for nothing. Woeful experience. There are far superior gyms in the neighbourhood with much better membership options.

I was a member of the club for almost a year. I moved out of Chicago in the summer of 2024. I tried to cancel my membership by calling the office and asking for direct instructions twice on different days. I was refused help due to a busy manager. In January 2025, I was contacted by a collection department agency and asked to pay 300$ for the months I wasn't even in the city where the gym is located. I don't recommend this place as the staff are so incompetent or motivated not to help with billing stuff to perform fraud and place a debt on you. That's how they make money.

I really enjoy this gym. The reviews turned me off initially but I haven’t had a bad experience yet. I do think some of the equipment is old, but it’s functional. The gym is clean, it’s a good environment to train, and even the parking situation hasn’t been too bad for me.

Really weird layout for a gym. Old people act like they own it. Nobody has spacial awareness. Hogging of machines(writing this after asking a man how long he had left on next extensions and he said 3 sets, that was 17 minutes ago). Only one machine of highly sought after machines.

Good thing is there plenty of cleaner for machines if the people choose to use them. The cable machines they have are pretty high quality.

I used to love this gym as there was a basketball court, pool hours on weekend when I could take my children and many yoga classes. They took out the basketball court without ever surveying the members. Covid hit and they stopped letting children come to the gym on the weekends. Parking became more difficult due to the number of members v. available parking spots. Gym was always very clean and the sauna, steam room, and pool were maintained well.

I enjoyed the lap pool for a couple of years when I lived nearby and it was pretty decent. Now I've moved and can't seem to get them to cancel my membership. I've called a couple times since June and have been told I'll receive an email to fill out a form and send back. The email never arrives, so I've been paying for months on a membership I can't use. I'm sure I can push more but really would like this to be a more efficient process.

This gym makes it extremely difficult to cancel a membership. I have been a member for about half a year and am willing to pay the cancellation penalty of $50. Yet, I have been going back and forth with customer service for weeks. They require proof of moving at least 25+ miles away OR a doctor’s note to cancel.. this is wild in today’s day and age. In Illinois specifically, as of 2025, a new law was passed that gym goers are able to cancel in person, over the phone, or via email for any reason. Knowing this, this gym has still made it impossible for me to cancel. Awful experience. WAC, just take the cancellation hit and get it over with.

I just joined this gym a bit more than a week ago and i already want to terminate . it’s really not clean despite what people say. The locker rooms are a disaster, water all over the floor, towels left on the floor and in the showers regularly. The gym is over crowded and alot of machines are broken. The sauna is very small and in the shower area. There’s no room in there to sit most of the time and water from the showers leak onto the floor. You’re not allowed to wear street shoes in the sauna and your socks will be soaked before a workout. The locker rooms have built in digital locks but most of the lockers are broken . This place is a bit atrocious .

This gym really isn’t great despite good sign up deals.

I have been a member here for over ten years and I have slowly seen this place go from good to awful. First it was the demise of kids club, now it’s the limited hours and overcrowding. If you are going at peak times it’s near impossible to navigate. Since the pandemic the hours never returned to normal and the classes didn’t either. If anyone is reading this it needs to be turned back to 5am opening and stay open a couple hours later, especially on the weekends. I sent a message to someone in aquatics about an issue I was having and never even received a response which lets me know how valuable I am as a member. The only reason I am giving this an extra star instead of the one it takes to write this is for the front desk staff who are just lovely people. Jen, Jojo, Jackson, Canon and anyone else who mans the front desk is in desperate need of a well deserved raise as are the cleaning staff. Everything else about this gym makes me wish harder that the equinox hotel that was supposed be built actually came to fruition and that there were better options that were walkable. Overall: seek an alternative if possible and if this is your best option try to come at off peak times.

*Cutting this down to one star that I have to give to write this review because all the above mentioned people are no longer there and the HVAC isn’t working properly.

It is 2024, almost HALF A DECADE after the Covid-19 pandemic, and they are still operating at 2020 pandemic hours! What kind of gym in a major city still closes at 9 pm M-Th, 8 pm Fri, and 7 pm Sat-Sun. There are gyms back to 24/7, and this place is still closing so early!

Blink fitness which is $10 a month is opened to 11pm, this place can afford an extra 2 hours. Many Planet fitness gyms are now open 24 hours!

The front staff rarely ever smiles, greets, or says goodbye. I know it’s a minimum wage job but I’ve had better service at McDonald’s. The ones here are the least friendly of all the CAC locations.

It’s odd they do not respond to any reviews, shows how much they care, as much as their front “welcoming" desk.

On any given day, about 1/3 of the patrons here need office space more than they need a gym. Why? Because they seem to be spending more time scrolling on their phones than working out. Cell phones should be banned from the workout spaces. Also, Gym Etiquette 101 should be on the roster of classes offered and requisite to joining.

Canceling was a nightmare. I went to the desk in person a month ago and was told they couldn't help me cancel. My Month to month Contract said 1 month notice by letter or manager on site to cancel. At front desk they gave me a business card and asked me to call it I was put on hold for quite a while and eventually. I was billed two more months without going at all then spoke to my bank who put a stop payment in. WLAC demanded payment for another month $80 + $20 late fee and said If I didn't pay they would Continue to bill me and then send me to collections. It was Ben Easington I worked with. He said it was immaterial that I hadn't been at the gym in 3 months. Ben Easington intentionally obfuscated the cancelation process and lied about contract terms i.e. that I couldn't cancel via someone physically at the club while I am there. Nightmare. I recommend Midtown or Equinox instead.

My wife has been a member of WLAC a year now and she encouraged me to join as a member. Unfortunately, today she was targeted by WLAC management (Jennifer). My wife was asked to leave the sauna due to her wearing outside clothing. She abided the request without hesitation. Management requested her to leave the sauna again as my wife gathered her things to leave the sauna, as if she wasn’t in the process of exiting the sauna. WLAC management waited at the sauna door awaiting my wife to exit the sauna, which at this moment is harassment. Jennifer reminded my wife a third time as she exited the sauna; no outside clothing. WLAC manager, Jennifer, displayed poor leadership in this situation. Jennifer did not offer an alternative to meet the rules of the Sauna; such as offering to stay in the sauna if outside clothing is removed. Jennifer could have provided a friendly reminder after my wife left the sauna. Instead, Jennifer chose a passive aggressive approach, resulting in an uncomfortable situation for all parties involved. My wife was the only person using the sauna at the time. It makes me wonder why did Jennifer feel the need to address my wife in that aggressive manner. I am highly disappointed WLAC management. There are respectful methods to reinforce rules of WLAC. Jennifer simply lacked the motivation, possibly the altitude to do so. I truly hope this issue can/will be resolved quickly.

The gym itself is great but management is a representation of the gym.
Today 03-22/23 at 10:02am I was approached my Jennifer in the ladies locker room sauna. She informed me that the sauna rules state no outside clothing worn in the sauna. I was wearing a sports bra, sweat band and leggings. I responded okay and was gathering my towel. She opened the door less than 2 secs again as I was in a standing position gathering my towel. She repeated herself again and I responded that I could hear and understand her I needed to get my things. As I exited the sauna door she stood in front of the door way/path of exiting and proceeded to tell me the rules again as if I was not listening to her the first time. After dressing I went to the front desk to ask for management and she was at the desk with a smile saying she was the manager. I let her know that the way in her tone and approach of me in the sauna was targeted and harassing. She never apologized to acknowledged her treatment towards a member (almost over a year and referring customer).
I really love this gym but the representation of racial profiling and targeting is inappropriate. My privacy and feeling safe is completely violated. Understanding rules and enforcing is one thing and can be done in a clear manner. Jennifer’s way of handling enforcement of rules should be evaluated considering the representation of the Chicago Athletics Clubs.

I canceled my membership in may of 2022 in person. Turned in my swipe card personally. Although I did not see the email that was sent to me- because it wasn’t through a west loop athletic club email- it was a personal email informing me they would need written consent of my cancellation- even though I showed in person. Apparently this policy isn’t even used today. So even though I don’t have the key to get into the gym I’ve been billed this entire time. Furthermore- the original membership ended in Oct of 2022. So I guest the membership was automatically renewed without notice after that time as well. After reading other people had similar problems- I really wouldn’t risk joining this gym. I don’t even know if I can get any of this money back. This is ridiculous.

I really love CAC gyms are very clean compared to most. The staff are friendly and helpful the space is great! The locker rooms are always clean. It’s aesthetically pleasing and the equipment is pretty well maintained and up to date. Aside from these great factors I love the energy of the environment. People are there to get their workouts in and are mindful (respectful) of others. Noise levels are moderate but always respectful and that is exactly what I need. No one is in there to intimidate or challenge you (with the exception of a few bad apples SCREW THEM) 99% of the people there are focused on their goals. I moved out of Chicago and I am struggling to find a gym that compares. The price is a fair charge for what you get. CLEAN SAFE NICE ENVIRONMENT

They don't tell you this when you sign up, but if you pick the month to month option, you are required to give 30 days notice for cancelling. That means that even if you cancel the DAY AFTER your normal billing day, you will be charged for the NEXT month. I understand I was not going to get a refund for the month I already paid. Completely understandable. But to be also charged for the next month is ridiculous. ALSO they charge more for the month to month flexibility.... kinda weird considering it's not very flexible. Why does a successful gym with constant stream of income need a 30 day notice for cancellation? They don't. It's just another shady way to make a buck off of their customers. I understand they have a right to do so, but I also think it's horrible customer service and a great way to make sure people never want to come back.

I just spoke with someone at the desk and sure enough.......
To cancel a membership, one must call them back....They will then notify a 'membership advisor' and they'll get back to you within 24-48hrs?
That's when you provide the written notice I guess, and that takes 30days?! Are we still talking about a gym membership?
The desk clerk said 'it's in the contract'...hahahaha...wow.
What happened to "no problem, you have until the end of the month'

Nice gym but the process is definitely shadey and feels like they squeeze you for more money if you want out.. How ridiculous.

In other words, if you want to cancel, you'd better decide a month before hand! Because you WILL pay!

Gigantic gym. I never have trouble looking for a cardio gym at all. The weight area is also big but always seems occupied no matter what time. They have so many cleaning wipes you can use so the gym is always clean. The front desk people can be rude sometimes though.

“Every day, once a day give yourself a present” Inspector Cooper said in “Twin Peaks”.This is my gift to myself everyday.

It’s a premium gym comprising of considerate, neat and motivated members who don’t mind paying extra for well maintained equipments along with wet and dry saunas, warm clean towels and great quality overall. The locker room is clean and they provide you the best shampoo and soap. The staff is helpful and informed. Really worth the premium charges.

This gym is nothing special and they have a hard time opening on time. Woman at front desk was extremely rude and put off when asked why the gym opened late. There wasn’t a manager on site so I asked for one to call me and gave phone number, but never received a call back.

The equipment is outdated and tired. Most of the time the locker rooms aren’t clean.

I would recommend staying away from this health club and the rude unprofessional staff.

It would be a great location for a gym.

The gym was fine, nothing special but the customer service is despicable. I just tried to call and cancel my year membership and was faced with not 1 but 2 of the rudest employees I have ever dealt with. It would have been one thing if I just made a mistake and it was explained to me. But that is not what happened at all,I had questions about my membership and the billing and the only response I was given was "that's your fault, we cant do anything" Even after I asked to speak to a supervisor I was still given the same rude answer and ended up having to pay an extra month which I did not want. Not sure why they would want to force me into staying with their gym if I was already unhappy. I would not recommend getting a membership to anyone, the gym was just okay so it wasn't worth the hassle. There are much nicer gyms with way betting customer service in Chicago!

I've been coming to the WAC for 3 years on average of 5 days a week, so I have a very thorough knowledge of the gym.

Pros: well kept, clean, good variety of classes and equipment. Trainers are experienced and staff is quality.

Cons: as much as it hurts me as I've been so loyal to this place, they have truly reached critical mass during peak hours for weight lifters. Just the volume of humans in this facility at any given time has continued to expand. With many new residential buildings in the hood with more coming, you simply will not have access to key equipment and on the worst days, you can't even find floor space. For those who heavily rely on squat racks (only 3) and bench press (only 2) it's not a feasible place to work out if you're forced to go during weekday peak hours. Weekends are generally much more manageable. If you stick to cardio, it's generally adequate there as well.

I get that some people would simply say "don't go during peak hours"... Okay cool, most of us have regular jobs that prevent this. I even spent a year on the 5am gym schedule and I still couldn't get a squat rack many mornings.

Gym facility and team are a strong 4-5 star. Gym over capacity has declined to a 2 star until there is some sort of relief.

I give 3 stars because they usually keep the gym tidy and the personal trainer I had was cool.

The gym itself is a scam. They contract their billing out to ABC financial. It is impossible to cancel your membership without a needlessly complicated process of emailing ABC or writing them a letter. Why can’t you just walk in and cancel?... so they can squeeze you for an extra month of membership fees by requiring a 30 day notice after you’ve sent a letter or email. So be aware of that before you sign up.

Also they used to have this huge calisthenics area on the second floor. They renovated it into another room for classes. Why? To make more money on classes. Now there’s not much room left for calisthenics.

Just don’t feel like giving them my money anymore.

To the guy who finds it way to busy, peak hours are always busy. It's how a business stays alive. If it was empty, they would either have to charge more or go out of business. Try switching up your workout or substitute an exercise on a machine that isn't busy.

To the lady that can't find a parking spot, this is Chicago... WAC has lots of parking but yes, not everyone can park in front of the building.

To the guy that thinks everyone is on their phones, if you are lifting for bulk, the average rest time between sets is 3-5 min. On a 5 rep-5 set, that means 25 min of down time that people may use to check their emails or social media.

To the lady who had problems canceling after a week, maybe you shouldn't have signed a year long contract; that's how contracts work in the real world.

To the guy who likes his apartment gym better, honestly, no one reading these reviews cares. We don't all have gym apartments.

Too many members, too little parking. Tried to cancel, they wouldn't let me. Then I realized I may be able to cancel since I moved 25 miles away. They then stated I was only 23 miles away (guess it depends on which route mapquesmapquest picks up at the time of search).

If you want to constantly wait for a machine because someone is sitting playing on their phone. This gym is for you.

ABC financial is ruining any last good thoughts that I did have about chicago athletic clubs.

Make sure you don't sign a year contract until you are completely satisfied with the service you are getting.

Hey I’m typing this review as someone overweight and trying to get back into things with enthusiasm- not someone who’s already in shape and wouldn’t keep it real about what the experience is like. People out there researching gyms, this is for you. My excitement with joining this gym started with an amazing Body Pump class with my best friend that left me sore for three days but made me feel great because I pushed myself. I joined be WAC for that reason. While their classes and amenities are nice, what I don’t like is that:

1. There’s not enough space in some of these classes. I don’t want to be so close on someone that I feel like I would accidentally hit them in the face. There’s also already been a few times where there just wasn’t any space at all for me. I can’t tell you how disheartening that is. It’s seriously like Sparta 300 to get into some of these classes. I’ve experienced this at three different locations. You have to be a minimum of 30 minutes early to get into the ones that really challenge you. And when you’re coming straight from work, that’s really tough. It’s clear your classes are popular and you need a bigger space. Also it would be nice if there were more classes offered later considering the volume of people and many of us not being able to workout until after 5pm.

2. Some of the weightlifting equipment needs to be spread out. If I can’t get into one of these classes, I’d like to know I have the option to use other equipment. That’s really hard when everything’s in one room and there’s consistently about 20 dudes using the weightlifting equipment.

3. All classes offered should have at least a short portion of the class for beginners where instructors explain what kind of maneuvers are about to be done. The gym is composed of more than just people looking to stay in shape. Some of us have never done some of these things before and while it’s cool to just jump in, there’s no way we’re going to know a whole routine of a class that other members have probably been there for at least a few weeks to learn.

I just don’t feel like I’m getting as much as everyone else on these reviews out of this membership. Now I’m committed to a year of primarily using roughly four machines and taking classes apparently when I get lucky that there’s space. And considering everyone’s consistency that it’s nearly impossible to cancel, I’m beyond frustrated.

Everything you need to know about how this business is this: They have outsourced their customer service arm, that handles cancellations, to ABC financial, a credit collection agency.

The gym's policies are predatory. When you cancel, you can't even speak to a person who works at CAC - you speak directly to the collection agency. The contract requires members to cancel a full 30 days before their next billing date. This is a gym that provides a service, not perishable baked goods. There is no legitimate reason for this policy, other than to scam members into paying for an extra month of gym that they can't use after they move.

I joined this gym on a 3-month contract. I informed them that I would be moving on March 31 (I informed them of this in January) and told them that i did not want them to renew the contract afterwards. I went in mid-march to confirm that my contract would stop on April 4, and they referred me to a collection agency for customer service. The collection agency then told me that I would be charged for the extra month, despite my initial conversation with the salesperson indicating - in January - that I did not wish for my contract to renew.

I then requested that they remove my credit card from autopay.

The response was that they would remove the credit card from autopay, and my contract would not be cancelled until the final bill was paid. This is not how contracts work.

I was a member at WAC for a few years. For the most part it was a fine experience. Unfortunately ABC Financial handles their billing. This means cancelling your membership is going to be a huge headache and most likely result in you being charged for extra time you didn’t want. This tarnished my otherwise decent opinion of the gym. Other than the billing, it gets a little overcrowded so lifting and parking during the week can be difficult.

While I went to this gym briefly, I was happy with the gym and the gym staff. However due to circumstances of me moving, I had attempted to cancel the gym, on March 14th, 2017. Today is August 9th, 2007 that is almost 5 months later, and I am still going back and forth chasing them for a cancellation. They claim they never received my request, however I received an email receipt sent by them that they received my request. Messages back and forth ever since, without an offered solution to me, and still without the cancellation even though my move evidence has been submitted. Its a shame that a gym like this tries to make their money by dragging out cancellations. My colleagues and friends go to this gym and I will advise them to cancel a year prior to their needed cancel date.

You get a lot for what you pay for. Under $100/month gets you access to the full gym, a ton of classes and a pool. Most of the gyms in the area charge twice that much for just classes and limited gym equipment with limited access.

It may be the times I go but I never have to wait for equipment. There's plenty to go around. The staff seems friendly and if you work out at the same time everyday, the regulars become a little friendly community, not chit-chatty-interrupt-your-workout friendly, just a nod and a smile and help you out if you need it. It's nice.

I have been part of the club for ~ 3 months now. So far everything has been good: clean facility, good pool not too crowded, easy access both with parking and by CTA, and reasonable membership rates. Only downside is: pool is heavily chlorinated, and they never got back to me about swim classes after 2-3 attempts (??). Overall I enjoy the best swim/pool, and ballet burn classes. I read negative reviews regarding membership but haven't need to change my membership yet - will update my review if things change.

Honestly couldn't believe people left bad reviews. The majority of equipment upstairs is new and they are currently renovating another area. Everything about the gym is wonderful except for the cancellation policy. Even if you think you've submitted a request to cancel, if they don't file it, expect to be paying heavily for it should you not follow up. Besides that, the customer service is either a hit or miss. In the morning, great people. Evening or afternoon, varies. I highly recommend you make absolutely certain that every request you submit is actually documented, even several months later, just to be safe. Had a great experience except for that. Really left a bitter feeling in me.

Absolutely LOVE this gym! I have run the gamut on gym memberships, from Planet Fitness to local gyms to XSport Fitness to Anytime....this is by far the best I've ever been to for several reasons:
LOVE taking group classes and not only do they have a TON every day and a wide variety, but they have them in "prime 9-5er hours," meaning people who work typical work hours still have plenty of early morning or later evening options. Almost every day there is a class that doesn't start until 6:45 which is plenty of time to get home, change, and get to the gym.

The staff and instructors. They're all amazing! Front desk workers are always friendly, helpful and welcoming. Instructors are personal, passionate, and know how to push you just hard enough :)

Locker rooms are always clean and spacious. Have participated in almost all the classes: TRX, Heavy Hitters and Spin are my favorites!

My favorite gym in the city. Sure, it's not as plush as an Equinox, but the size, staff, and classes make up for it. They still have a sauna and steam room, so I'm happy. The instructors appear to really love what they do, and stay on top of current (reputable) fitness trends. Evenings between 5-7 are pretty crowded like anywhere else, but after 7:30pm the place dies down.
It is easy to feel at home, therefore easier to look forward to my workout!
