The owner here is five stars alone. He has been nothing short of kind, professional, and welcoming throughout all of our interactions. Additionally, you cannot beat the price for a gym in such a high-profile location with 24/7 access and unmatched cleanliness. I have no notes.

A gem in this neighborhood!! All of our staff frequent this gym, everyone who works there is super friendly , always clean inside , and it's open 24/7. The prices are also the most reasonable you'll find in the area. Couldn't recommend this place enough!!

This gym was great, clean, simple, and efficient, until I lost my headphones. They have cameras everywhere and clear signage saying you’re being watched and will be charged if you don’t wipe down your equipment. (Honestly, I appreciated that it’s part of what keeps the space spotless)

That said, those cameras won’t help you with anything beyond enforcing the rules. I reached out right away after realizing I left my headphones behind, but since I was mid-flight, I couldn’t check myself. Their response: a flat “nope, come look in person.”

No effort to check the cameras or help out. Same vibe when I asked for a replacement scan key, felt like I was asking for a kidney. I didn’t even mind the $10 fee, it was just the attitude. So yes, it’s truly a no-frills gym - and they really mean no frills.

This gym has honestly become my little sanctuary. It’s always so clean, cozy, and calm — exactly what I need after a long day. I love that it’s open at night, because I’m definitely more of a night owl. No crowds, no chaos, just good energy and space to move.
Nothing extra, just what matters most. Totally recommend it.

This is a wonderful neighborhood gym! They have all the equipment you'd ever need, the place is sparkling clean (which can't be said about most gyms these day), helpful staff, and awesome personal training rates. I've done a lot of personal training and have never seen $50 sessions with top quality trainers. Highly recommend!

Been hitting up Wicker Park Fitness for a few months now, and overall, it's a solid neighborhood gym. At $37/month, it's a steal, especially with classes like kickboxing, yoga, and bootcamp included . The vibe is chill, and the staff is friendly, making it feel more personal than those big chain gyms. However, the space is a bit tight, and during peak hours, it can get pretty crowded, which sometimes makes it hard to get on the machines. Also, while they offer complimentary apples and morning coffee, the amenities are pretty basic—no towel service or fancy locker rooms. But if you're looking for an affordable, no-frills gym with a community feel, this place does the trick.

I hate to admit it, but I was wrong.

All my life I used to say, you do not need a gym membership. You need to have a physical, plentiful, active lifestyle and you'll be fine. What I really was saying was, I don't know how to work out and I need help to navigate all the weird gym equipment, sort out all those myths in my head and bring forth more reasonable, realistic goals that, not only fit my lifestyle, but are proactive in the mental game of gains; when it comes to setting aside time for working out and feeling accomplished with favorable results.

Joel was like a divine sent; placed in that gap for me to awaken to the reality and to feel energized to do this new thing called 'taking care of myself' by demystifying the working out aspect of it and showing me how good it is to shift gears mentally and enjoy a delicious drink of health and wellness in my life.

So, this how it happened. I took advantage of a promo and went in to check it out. Then, I scheduled a personal training session with Joel.

Since, I've been converted to adult and sober thoughts. I now think weights are cool and feeling healthy is achievable. I know that all those false ideas were thoughts of a defeatist that feared trying something and being doomed to failure. But in all fairness, I also didn't have the superfluous goals I associated with working out like losing weight and looking great, but I guess that was also within the defeatist mentality.

Look, you could find value in gym or not, but when you are more knowledgeable you can choose what's best for you. This experience of taking personal training sessions has inspired just that; reevaluate and re-educate myself on what it means for me to be healthy. Thank you, Joel.

Edit added review:
I like coming to wicket park fitness because I see so many other females kicking ass, doing their thing and holding down the fort. It is truly inspiring to see how we are able to create and maximize our capacity when we have safe, clean, open format, spaces like this, with the adequate equipment, resources and tools that only accentuates our independence.

Loooooove this gym. Began my membership when I first moved to the area a few years ago. It is the perfect little neighborhood gym. I sadly have to give her a temporary goodbye since I have gathered an affinity for running lately and am now training for a race later this year. They also do a Runner's discount for winter if you prefer to do your workouts outside in the warmth which is great. I don't know why everyone is complaining about the cancellation process because it took one email and they responded within an hour. Anyway, sad to leave here but highly recommend!!

It's a good thing this gym is open 24 hours because it's insanely packed between 4-8pm. I've never worked out at a more poorly maintained, inadequately staffed, customer-unfriendly gym. Cancelling your membership with them is a nightmare; I notified them I want to cancel my membership 29 days before my next billing period and I'm being told they're going to charge me again for a full month because I'm within a dubious 30-day cancellation period. The outdated, poorly maintained machines that they place too close together were not reason enough for me to cancel my membership over the past two years, but their nickel-and-diming me with an onerous cancelation process (which they state must be completed via USPS but were KIND enough to offer to conduct over e-mail) makes me upset that I ever gave this gym any money in the first place.

As other commenters have said, this gym will try to scam you into paying for extra months after cancellation. I moved away several months ago now, but there is a gym right down the street called Wicker Park Athletic club, I'd highly recommend spending your money there instead.

My wife and I tried to cancel both our accounts 3 years ago and they only canceled her membership. They’ve been billing me the whole time and are trying to pull some 8th grade legalese to justify holding on to over 3k of my money. You can’t even get them on the phone and they are still trying to bill me after several follow-up emails on my part. The place was never staffed and always seemed on the verge of bankruptcy.

Go to a gym that has some sense of ethics and that isn’t liable to close down at any second.

Adding to this following this reply: How would I even pay my past due bill (which I’m not going to do since you owe me money, not the other way around), when you never pick up the phone? Also, I don’t have one voice mail from you ever.

Be a decent human and cancel my membership and stop making me jump through all these dumb hoops. Go in your system and cancel the account. It’s that simple.

Also, this is the first I’m hearing about not being able to cancel with a past due balance. Again, this could have been told to me by email or the phone instead of in google reviews.

Everyone should be aware that you play games instead of just doing the right thing. Tell the story however you want, it’s still clearly sharp, bad business practice on your part. Review the email chain from the start - when my wife and I went to cancel, you never said a word about a “third party” not being able to cancel. I’m still hoping to avoid it, but if I have to I will see you in small claims court.

Third note: if your gym is doing so well, it shouldn’t be a problem to pay me back all the money of mine that you are trying to pocket.

Been going here since the c pandemic and it's always been a pretty good experience. Things are always clean and key fob access is 24 hours.

Selection of machines and free weights is nice and anytime something does get broken, it's usually fixed fairly quickly.

Rates are reasonable as well and billed monthly.

My fiancée moved here from Georgia over 2 years ago and always mentions how this gym has given him a place that feels like home. He had a gym similar to this one back in Atlanta that he was very sad to part from but has found solace here. This is my 2nd month at the gym (our wedding is in December and I’m sweating for the wedding!) and it’s been so nice coming during some of the quieter hours and being able to try different workouts and equipment while taking my time. Clean gym with respectful members - appreciate having this place down the street at an affordable price. Thanks for all you do!

Apparently leaving a negative review of this place is the only way to get a response from the owner.

I signed up for Wicker Park Fitness last year in the summer when I first moved to the area. Unfortunately I lost my job at the end of December and had to move out of state. Per their contract and protocol, I sent an email requesting a cancellation form (as indicated in the original contract I signed) and was told “there’s no form, all we need is an email and two pieces of mail sent with the email.” I sent this email and attachments in early December requesting my refund of the unused months (I paid for the year upfront).

Radio silence despite multiple follow ups and requests, both emails and calls. Finally nearly two months later, I got an email from someone named Kenzie MacKenzie who identified herself as a director and explained I needed to send those same pieces of mail via USPS certified letter. I sent those in early February as directed, received the green tracking card to indicate it was received by the gym.

Once again despite multiple emails and phone calls, I cannot get anyone to respond to my requests. Mind you I requested this refund in early December and here I am FOUR MONTHS later still waiting on my money or any communication from this place. I followed the rules, I read the contract, I was polite and professional, so where is my money?

Response to Owner: Wow… Did you gloss over the part of my review where I said I requested that exact cancellation form and was told that it wasn’t necessary, by BOTH members of staff (one being a director)? I followed the protocol set forth by your staff, I received a USPS green card for certified mail indicating that my request was received by your office. You as the business failed to uphold your portion of the contract, putting YOU at fault. I have staff responses in writing and would be happy to send the email chain along. Absolutely unacceptable.

Overall not a bad gym at all. Has what you need equipment wise, great location and staff( when there lol) are helpful and keep the place together.

Improvements to the bathrooms and removing the signs on the machines telling you to clean otherwise you pay a fee would be great.

Still great gym for the price and area it’s located 👍

I lived right around the corner from here. Cancelled when I moved. Read the other low reviews. The owner uses the threat of collections and credit score dings to try to extort money out of you by threatening to hurt your credit score (which is not how collections works don’t be scared by those tactics, been there before on forgotten bills/expired credit cards and there’s no impact on your score unless you don’t respond).

Never was presented a contract at sign up. Unprofessional business, WPAC is down the road and way better both in their gym and in the cancellation process.

★ 1

This gym has been extremely disappointing. Equipment is subpar. No GHR machine and front desk is not helpful. Crowded narrow space and vibe used to be friendly neighborhood gym but has since become more of a meat market/bro gym, which as a female is not appealing to me.

There is essentially zero customer service and they promise discounts and prices that they do not honor.

First, I think about 2 years ago, I signed up through ClassPass and was paying $25 a month. Then, because I’m a healthcare worker they said it would be better if I just did a regular membership but they would honor that ClassPass rate. That was great until they increased the rate to $59.95 in May 2023 without telling me. Hold that thought because it gets worse.

I referred someone to their gym in 2022. They were having a promotion that said I would get a month off if I referred someone for membership. In order to receive this, I had to email them. I did email them. I never heard back. That was in January of 2023. I never got a free month. I called them to inquire and never got a straight answer. They just told me to email them again, which I did. No answer. No response for over a YEAR. No month off of membership. Absolutely nothing. Honestly this seems fraudulent to advertise a month off and not come through on these promises.

Back to December, 2023…after I realized that they had jacked up the price of the gym, I called them to see if I could get a refund and understand what had happened. I was upset because my partner who also has a membership, was paying only $35.00. Apparently they had still given him a ClassPass discount, but not me and had increased that to $35.00 from $25.00 per month for him. I spoke to an associate on the phone in December of 2023 named Casper who did not know why this happened and instructed me of course to email them. I have emailed them. I told Casper to email me regarding this issue but did receive any email. It’s now January 12, 2024 and I still haven’t heard back. Not a peep. I have never heard back from them ever in fact. They never responded to my email from January of 2023!

At this point I’m beyond frustrated. I’ve emailed requesting to cancel my membership and haven’t heard back.

So facts here include that I haven’t heard from anyone at this gym via email ever and have been awaiting responses since I emailed them over a year ago. They jacked up their pricing and have refused to honor previous discounts and give some members discounts randomly it appears while others pay for an overpriced mediocre at best gym.

Stay away.

Edit, replying to owner:
1. I did email about the discount in Jan 2023 as stated. Please read this thoroughly. I have also now emailed that additional email address with no response. I forwarded my multiple previous emails.

2. I am well aware that we are now beyond the worst of the covid-19 pandemic. It’s beyond insulting and rude to insinuate that I would not know that given my line of work. What I would have expected is that because your staff told me to cancel my ClassPass because your healthcare discount would be the same is that when that discount is done, you should have honored the ClassPass rate which is what you did for my partner but not for me, as I’ve outlined above.

3. I have requested cancellation and requested a free month as above with no reply. I’m sending emails to the correct address. It shouldn’t be this hard to communicate with a business and require reviews to get answers.

4. I would be willing to pay more for a better gym with prompt and kind customer service. The way you come across in your replies to customers is unprofessional and unkind. I’m clearly not alone in my issues. It is indeed predatory and fraudulent to engage in false advertising. It’s not easy to cancel and I have been charged twice before. It is predatory to promise rates to me that you don’t deliver. Like I said, I would be happy to pay more for better service. I’m still trying to cancel and get away from your gym!

Gym is okay for the price but cancelling was frustrating. They demand you pay extra month when you want to cancel, and threaten to send you to collections agency if you do not comply. Pretty shady business practice to get an extra month of fees from members who are leaving the gym.

TLDR: Signed up on a Friday and canceled on the next Monday and that costed me $150. NO PARKING AND THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Before signing up I asked the staff attendant, “is there parking around the area”, she said “yes there’s plenty of parking”. The next two days I tried to go to the gym, first early morning and late at night, in both occasions I wasn’t able to find parking so I decided to cancel my membership. I called to cancel my membership but they wouldn’t do it over the phone and wanted me to send an email. After requesting a cancellation with an email, I didn’t receive any confirmation, then I called again the staff member said there’s a 31 days grace period so you will be billed for the next month. So that $50 sign up fee and $50 for the first month and another $50 for the second month and I’ve never used the gym.

Update:

This review seems to be getting a lot of views, so I thought I'd mention that the trainer I worked with has left this gym to go work for a competitor.

It's my understanding that the cost of membership and training packages has increased significantly, but the overall quality and amenities at the gym have declined. I believe they don't even offer group classes now, a feature that once set them apart.. basically all gyms in the city have this. It seems they are suffering from mismanagement.

Original review:

Although I've moved away from the area, I still highly recommend this gym. Martin, the personal trainer I was matched with there many years ago, is top notch and is an extremely attentive and experienced trainer. He takes a very methodical but diverse approach to helping people reach their fitness goals, going well beyond the role of personal trainer (eg nutrition, trigger point massage, flexibility/mobility, and general advice on wellbeing).

It's a smaller space than many gyms, but the price is quite low, especially for wicker park. The equipment is all good quality & the people that there were always typically very friendly and laid back.

I've been going to Wicker Park Fitness for a few months now and love it! I tried a few other gyms in the area and (despite being more expensive and bigger) their equipment was run down, the weightlifting areas were always packed full, and their hours were worse.

I'm not sure what it is, but the members at Wicker Park Fitness are so courteous and never hog the equipment. Even though the gym is smaller, I never have trouble doing all of my workouts. I also love that it's a 24 hour gym so I can drop in very early or late at night on a busy day!

Great neighborhood gym. Rarely crowded (at least when I go). Several squat racks, good amount of cardio machines and free weights. People are friendly and respectful, no grunting or stalking you to get on a machine. Pricing is low compared to other gyms in the area and you get 24 hour access. My only complaint is the music, I am typically there during unstaffed hours and the music is sooooo loud. I wear Bose over the ear headphones and I have to turn up my music to the max in order to drown out what is playing in the gym. On top of that, it's always seems to be metal or hard rock playing. I feel like if music is going to blasting then it should at least be a neutral station that plays different genres. Would be nice if someone would turn down the volume before they leave for the day or turn it off all together since most people have their headphones on anyway. Other than that, great gym! :)

Purchased a year long membership in full. At the end of the 1 year mark, they called asking for a new credit card for renewal (the one I used initially was expired). I did not want to rejoin and was also out of the country. They started to text me directly, telling me that I owed a "maintenance fee" of $25, and that if I didn't pay it, I would be sent to collections. Absolutely absurd. The membership ended, why would I have to continue to pay fees after the fact? And to be threatened to be sent to collections. Multi-year customer, will not be going back.

I started Wicker Park Fitness to train with Martin after seeing some of his amazing transformations on Facebook. Firstly, the space is just the perfect size with no frills, just the equipment that is needed which I tend to lean more to when looking for a gym. They have plenty of weights and we never have had an issue grabbing the ones we need throughout. A problem that I have encountered at other gyms.
Martin is an amazing trainer. He is very knowledgeable about everything to do with fitness and really works with you and your needs and goals. He has taught me a lot with our weekly sessions and I have gained a lot of muscle and tone. During our training hour, he always respects others that are in the gym working out, making sure that he doesn't take any machine being used by another. I even added an additional session with him monthly. I have trained with many trainers in the past and I enjoy the workouts Martin customizes for me to achieve my goals! I highly recommend Martin if you are looking to get real results, but you might want to hurry as his schedule fills quickly!

If you are looking for a gym with great accessibility look no further then Wicker Park Fitness. With 24 hour access, I even managed to get a workout in after Thanksgiving dinner this past year!

No frills gym with exactly what I need to power through a great workout. That’s the point right!? 😜

Busy during the usual peak hours but I always manage to seamlessly accomplish my goals while people respect the facility and the other members around them.

It also boasts one of the cities most talented Personal Trainers, Martin. Him and his team have improved the wellbeing of my body and my health in a dramatic way. His skill is unmatched on so many levels from knowledge, form, nutrition.. really the list is never ending!

Don’t walk… RUN… to WPF and their talented PT’s!!!

I dance, and it's so nice to have a mirrored practice area. The Southport location (Southport Fitness) also has a mirrored room where the ceilings are higher, however the benefit of the Wicker Park gym is that the mirrors are on all four walls. This is really helpful for checking alignment in yoga and dance.

I have been a member at this Gem of a Gym for over 10years. I give it a full recommendation to anyone who views a gym as place you go to workout. If you view a gym as place that has a barista, steam room, and carpeted locker rooms - WPF ain’t your place!

WPF offer all the essentials for cardio and weight training and for low membership fees. Staff and management have been super friendly since day one - and always show care for their members, and the gym’s facilities. Only crowded during the 5:30-6:30, but rarely have to wait for any station I want to use. WPF is offers a super in-and-out experience for those aiming to make the workout the top priority of a trip to the gym : )

Gym is open long hours with staff, has all the machines you need spaced out appropriately, and is always clean. Most times, outside of the after work rush, it's not very busy, don't have to worry about waiting on a machine or being too crowded.

Staff is friendly and helpful. Complementary towel service.

You get what you pay for. A gym so close you can walk there in a few minutes. You can bench press there unlike Planet Fitness. I'm not paying a thousand dollars a year for WPAC, nor am I interested in driving all the way to Planet Fitness.

Obviously it's a tight squeeze and crazy from 5-7 but common sense should dictate that.

Most people rerack their weights at this gym. I moved and go to LA Fitness now and it's like a scavenger hunt trying to find matching dumbbells.

Almost all of the 1-star reviews come from people with the same last name, which means they come from a family of complainers or happened to all be there on this gym's one day that things weren't on point.

I have been a $30/month Yoga Unlimited member of Wicker Park Fitness for approximately 7 months. The instructors for yoga are incredible. Each teacher is a little different, but they all care about your form and technique and will assist you if you have any difficulties or limitations. Every teacher knows me by name and plans the lesson out beforehand, making the class go smoothly so you can slip into breath to movement. They also have relaxing or upbeat playlists depending on the type of class. It's great! I definitely recommend the $30/month unlimited yoga class and the rest of the gym looks great as well. Being there for 2 years I saw the gym go through many changes including a change in ownership. Wicker Park Fitness isn't a fancy pants top of the line facility but as I've said many times before, it was my home away from home. It doesn't have fancy amenities such as towel warmers and saunas but what it lacks in flash, it makes up for in heart. Many members have become good friends and spend time with each other outside of the gym. Ive made life long friendships there including meeting the love of my life. I can honestly say that the heart of Wicker Park Fitness lies within its members. People care for one another there and you will not find that spending over 80 bucks a month at some big name chain. The personal trainers are top of the line, be it Martin, Samantha, Jaime, Sheldon or Cindy, you will always have them giving 100% effort in tailoring the right workout to fit your needs. I started working out there weighing in at 150 lbs and with the guidance of PT and nutritional advice, I dropped to 120 lbs and am in the best shape of my life. Classes are always a fun time whether its Barre Burn with Jaime, Yoga Fit with Christine, Bootcamp with Martin, or Booty Burn with Samantha they will kick your ass everytime. Last but certainly not least Colin the new manager is one of the coolest guys you'll meet and goes above and beyond to make your experience enjoyable. If you want a gym where you can make friends, learn new things, and not break the bank, look no further than Wicker Park Fitness.
