We have been extremely happy with Emler
Swim School. Two of my three kids have been involved (One has graduated out, and one still enrolled). They have made much quicker progress here as opposed to where we were taking lessons before at a YMCA. I believe it's due to the small class sizes (never more than 4 kids to one teacher) and the teaching strategies. Swimming is very personalized per child to fit their growing and changing needs each week. It is not unusual to have one kid in a class with 2 flippers, another kid in the same class with a flotation belt around their waist, and yet another child with no assistance. I also love that they focus solely on safety swimming (No fancy strokes, per se). All staff from instructors to managers are extremely personable and kind. They also are always patient when we have had a sports season change/new schedule and need to change our scheduled swim night. The facility is also always clean and well kept from the pool to changing areas to the play area for little kids. I highly recommend Emler!

**PARENTS BEWARE**As a parent who has had two children go through a swim class for instructional and safety, which was the company that was prior to this one named nitro swim. This particular program with Elmer swim school does not even remotely compare to the great things that nitro swim did I would say parents beware of joining this swim School the school first of all promotes 30 minutes of swim time and you only get 25 every single class they cut it to do show offs to parents which I don’t particularly care for. I don’t think that’s something needed due to the fact that you are here to teach my child to be safe and to make sure they do not drown in the pool. They should get the complete 30 minutes time. show us only last 30 seconds and so by the time my daughter is out of the pool we still have 4 1/2 minutes left of class that she could still be learning and getting better. We have been doing this for six months now and I am not confident that my child can swim safely in a pool or anybody of water. They use way too many manipulatives in the pool to help them float and I think that is ridiculous because you wanna put children in the water and teach them how to float with their own body. That is how they’re going to know to be safe if they fall in the body of water, they will know what to do immediately they won’t have manipulatives or floaty devices or fins to help them swim. I am so disappointed in this program. It has become a waste of money I feel and I plan on canceling this membership and asking for a full refund of six months because it did not deliver what was promised. please bring back nitro swim they got directly to the point of swimming. They put children in the pool without any manipulatives and immediately showed them how to float on their back how to save their lives and how to truly swim. This class has not done so in my child is just playing at this point when I shared with a staff member which is I believe the store manager, she told me that well kids need that time to build up their confidence with parents during the show off time. I told her I know how to encourage my child. I’m sitting there watching her constantly and encouraging her as she goes and after she’s out of class, you should not remove the time that I’m paying for to do a show off. You should continue to still teach my kid so you’re only gonna get a full 25 minutes. You’re not going to get 30 minutes of class. I’m so disappointed because now Fort Wayne has no good swim instructional courses. I feel like they prolong the levels to keep charging you more and more each month they’re not taking this seriously and I have not seen one child in that pool that can swim without any floating device.

We love our swim class here. We have been here for 3 months and I have seen so much improvement on my children learning how to swim and be safe around the water. We went from not getting our face wet, to loving the water.

Ms Jamie does a great job explaining how to use your arms and to flip over from front to back.

We’ve been bringing our kids to Emler Swim School for at least 3 years and continue to come back each summer to improve their skills. The instructors are great with the kids. We also held my son’s 9th birthday party there last year. Cynthia assisted with the planning while Scott, Jami, and Rylan helped with supervising on the day of. They were so attentive and made sure the kids had a great time but stayed safe!

My kiddos have been taking swim lessons since they were babies. Emler helped them progress so much that our oldest has made it to an official swim team and our youngest is close behind. Jaime has been integral in this and my son will be sad once we move completely on to the next endeavor as he loves his Jaime. She truly knows how to reach the kids and takes the time to get to know the kids and the best way to teach them. Thanks for all you have done!!!

My daughters are very happy with their swim lessons. Before coming to Emler, they had been in two other places and we didn’t see much progress. At Emler, they have overcome their fear and made great progress. Throughout these levels, we’ve had three wonderful teachers—Miss Jamie, Miss Lydia, and Miss Aubrey—and they have all been excellent. From the very beginning, we felt welcomed. The entire staff is very friendly and supportive, and we truly appreciate everything they do for our kids.

We have tried two different swim places in town and were not successful with our son. The class sizes were too large and everything seemed so chaotic. We started at Emler in June of this year and our 7-year is swimming like a fish and loves his time in the pool. They are use lesson time to stress safety. The instructors & managers are great! They are always encouraging when our son is struggling with something & trying to get him to do the next thing on the level. The changing area is great, with many separate rooms. There are blowdryers available & even towels if you forget yours. I highly recommend Emler Swim School.

We love this place! It’s been so great for our son! He’s grown in his swimming skills and getting more used to the water. My son has struggled going under and getting his face wet and they have been able to help him slowly start to go under. He’s now swimming underwater like a little fish! Cannot recommend this place enough!

We’ve had such a wonderful experience at Emler Swim! From the moment we walk in, Taylor at the front desk always greets us with such warmth and professionalism. Her customer service is top-notch, she’s friendly, patient, and always goes the extra mile to make sure everything runs smoothly for us.

And I can’t say enough about Rylyn! She has been an amazing instructor for RJ and Kelani. Her teaching style is encouraging, patient, and fun, and you can truly see how much she cares about her students’ progress. Both kids have grown so much in confidence and skill since starting with her, and they always look forward to class.

Thank you, Taylor and Rylyn, for making our experience at Emler Swim so positive! We’re grateful for everything you do.

Emler Swim School has exceeded my expectations. My son attended another school and honestly, he didn't have a good experience, both with his learning progress and with the staff. We decided to come to Emler, and in less than a month, my son overcame his fear of putting his head underwater. He gained a lot of confidence. His teachers have been very patient, positive, and always encouraging. I recommend Emler 100%.

I have sent my two kids to another swim class in the past with no true success. I saw the Elmer school and wanted to try one last time. Immediately I saw results. The classes are very small so the kids get the attention needed. The instructors are knowledgeable and good at teaching the kids what is expected. I recommend them to anyone who wants their kids to learn how to swim the Correct way!

My two kids have been a part of Emler Swim School for the last 2 years and I cannot comment enough on how much I appreciate them. From not knowing how to swim at all, to being able to swim across the pool independently has given me so much relief as a parent. I'm very impressed at how much their current teachers, Jami and Elizabeth, care so much to teach my children to perform the correct actions in the pool. Each lesson they are getting stronger and smarter in the water, and that's because of the great teachers they have! I see the passion they have for the work they do. Thank you so much Emler!

Our initial experience was a bit rocky with finding the right placement for our son, but we eventually found it and he has been thriving. He had never taken lessons before (second child problems😅). He looks forward to swimming lessons every week! His teacher, Rylan, is so good with the kids! The kids get a lot of one on one because the classes are limited in size. The only thing I would change is to have the classes longer in length of time(because he loves it so much!)

I am so happy to have finally found Emler swim school. After two less than stellar swim lesson experiences in town, I am happy that we finally found Emler. Both my boys were very afraid to get into the water at ages 3 and 5 when we started here. They got my youngest (most afraid) in without a tear on day one. Then they wrote in his notes that getting out a toy boat was the key to getting him in the water. They know both my boys by name.

The class sizes are small and that makes me feel more comfortable with safety. They take drowning and swim safety very seriously in the pool and have the instructor with the small class and one or two lifeguard on deck actively paying attention and ready to jump in at a moments notice. I can't believe my 6 year old is swimming freestyle with the form that he is already. I am excited for him to learn all his strokes this year.

Cynthia has been so helpful getting our kids classes made up and aligned so we can take them both in at the same time. If you have trouble getting a time you want just stop in and talk to her at the front desk!

My 3-year old has been struggling with anxiety about swimming underwater for well over a year. When she started the level 3 class at Emler, her attitude quickly turned around. After just one month in the class, she is holding her breath underwater for 10 seconds and coming up for air with a huge smile.

I can’t say enough positive things about her instructor, Shiloh. She is great at connecting with each of the kids and making them feel at ease.

We couldn’t be happier with the swim instruction our children are receiving. Our three-year-old has made incredible progress in the water thanks to Jami’s patience, kindness, and nurturing approach. She creates such a positive environment, and it’s been amazing to see his confidence and skills grow each week.

Our daughter is working with Aliyah, and while their time together has been more recent, we’ve been so impressed with how she has encouraged her to step out of her comfort zone. Aliyah challenges her in just the right ways, helping her continue to grow and build on her abilities.

Both instructors have made such a meaningful impact on our kids, and we are truly grateful for their dedication and care.

They celebrate every little victory, which keeps motivation high, and they explain techniques in ways that really click for kids.

We loved this place as Nitro and love it as Emler too!
The staff always make sure kids are safe. They will push them to learn new things and try hard. The goal here is truly for children to know how to swim. I feel that my child has gotten the best of “ISR” with also learning how to swim, not just self rescue.
It is always so clean and organized when we come in each week and I enjoy being in the building. The atmosphere is just so calm in the waiting area.
Our instructor, Jamie, is wonderful. I couldn’t ask for anyone better to push my stubborn kiddo. She is so patient with kids who are scared or are having a rough day. I have never seen her without a smile on her face through the entire lesson. At the end of each lesson, she does such a great job of communicating what they worked on and what needs improvement. We enjoy Jamie so much and are so thankful for all she does!

We have been attending Emler Swim classes for a few weeks, starting at 13-months-old. We’ve tried other swim lessons at other places but thought they were a joke. Emler not only has an amazing facility full of changing rooms, watch area, and a play area, the classes are great! They include both safety and fun and I see my baby progressing each week. Emler swim school has been a very positive change for my 3 year old who use to hate water and bath time. Jami is her teacher and she is very patient with Skye and has been helping build her confidence and teaching her that water on her face is not a bad thing. Bath time is so much better even just after the first class! Her now goes under the water and is working on holding her breath for 10 seconds. I am so happy we took the chance and enrolled our little one. We are looking into signing up our littlest one for baby classes to get her confident and secure in the water. Let me start by saying that I really like the instructors and the facility in general. The pool is clean and warm and the instructors are very attentive.
My problem is with the Emler swim school policies. I signed up for a July program only to find out that they charge month to month and will charge you mid month for the next month. I looked up the policy on their website which states you have to submit a withdraw request which goes into effect 30 days from the request. That would put me at an additional two weeks into August which I was fine with. However, when I called to cancel they stated they could not refund any of the payment, even though it went through 45 days. They said the best they could offer was a credit to my account.
I don’t like the shady business practices and I just recommend everyone reading the fine print before signing up.

We’ve tried multiple swim schools, and Emler blows them all out of the water.

Our kids have all learned how to swim here. Emler has a methodical process, and a checklist of things for your kids to accomplish. They keep parents informed and provide actual feedback when you ask questions. They have had a few staffing issues while we’ve been with them, but they continue to support us. Can’t fault their effort in any way.

Picture #1 is Jasmin working with our 5 year old. Jasmin is pretty new to our time and day, but my 5 YO loves working with Jasmin so much that she struggles to work with any one else 😅This has been a consistent issue for all our kids as they move up to new levels. They like their teachers so much it takes a week or two to adapt.

Picture #2 is Scott, who is effectively the head guy in the pool area. Scott does great with the kids and he’s a natural teacher. I’ve seen him work with all age levels, and he excels with them all.

Picture #3 is Jamie. I think all of our kids have worked with her at some point, and they all loved her. She’s patient and insightful. She also says hi to all my kids each day, even if they’re not in her class anymore. We all appreciate it.

We have been with Emler since they took over from the previous swim school, Nitro. Initially, there were many changes, both in the pool and with the staff. However, it’s clear now that they run a well-oiled machine. Our daughter has grown so much, especially in terms of her confidence in the water.

As long-time swimmers, we’ve had the pleasure of working with several great instructors. But there’s something special about Jamie. Our daughter always lights up when she sees her. Jamie takes the time to wave, smile, or say hi — small gestures that mean the world to a 5-year-old. We truly appreciate the kindness Jamie brings to each lesson. It’s obvious she loves her job and the kids she works with, and that makes a big difference to us.

We love Emler!

Miss Raegan has our anxious 6 yr old now asking if he can keep coming even after learning to swim!

And Mr. Scott took our water hating almost 4 yr old from crying the whole class to asking when she gets to swim with Mr. Scott in less than a month.

We have tried several programs and swim places and this one is the only one our kids ask to return to!

Scott, Shay, and well, all teachers are great. Very patient and supportive of our 4 and 6 year old kids. Our kids love coming and we see weekly swimming progress, making us much more comfortable with having them around water (the clothes-on exercise is very helpful).

Edit: The original 5-star review in the paragraph at the bottom was for Nitro Swimming School, the previous operator. Our short time with the new operator, Emler, was 2 star at best. Poor communication, poor professionalism, shady business practices, horrendous treatment of employees, lack of transparency, and perhaps the worst, they just tell you what you want to hear about your child’s progression in the pool, with little to no regard for teaching skills or safety.

Original Post - Review of Nitro Swim School
An amazing place for all ages of kids. This is not your typical “swim lessons”. Kids progress at their own pace after they have mastered certain skills. No mass instruction, very personalized. Highly recommend!

Went to a private party and while most of the kids were absolutely ecstatic, we had a special needs 10 year old left behind and that completely turned me off to ever coming back. Because my kiddo couldn't pass the swim test, they had to wear a life vest to play in the pool. While upset and unhappy about the rules, we did convince them to follow them and put a vest on. However, they are the size of a 14 year old, and they did not have a life vest to accommodate them. After trying on 2 different vests (one they had to dig in a closet for) my kid ran out sobbing and embarassed. There was no follow up, no asking if they were okay, and no support whatsoever. I walked in excited, looking up swim classes for both of my kids. Now I'm never planning on stepping foot in here again.

It has been completely different since Emler took over. Raised rates, no more refunds for when THEY cancel the lessons for holidays or weather, staff changes, lesson structure confusion and constant change. I really miss the old ownership with Nitro.

For the cost, and short lessons, I felt that sitting on the side waiting for a turn for sometimes 5 minutes at a time was such a waste of money. The coaches only acted like they cared when the management or owner was there, which was like never. It was an entirely different place when he came. Its like a 25 min class for $25-30 each time, something like that. Try to request a day off and be faced with policies slapped in your face, and along the same lines with unenrolling, all while being redirected to their less than intuitive website. Then, try taking your child somewhere else and are just confused because they teach a very different technique. What a mess. Its not a choice I would make again.

Update: I had forgotten about the silly attendance police someone else mentioned. Take from it what you want: They require a 24hour notice for an absence but you can only call between 10-1 on the day of that you want to do the make up to see if they can fit you in. And if you miss the THREE HOUR window to call them they won’t let you book.

My daughters have been swimming for our neighborhood's summer swim program for several years. During winter months, I try to put them in a conditioning class to keep their skills up. We had gone to the Y in previous years, but after a poor experience, we were ready for something new. Thankfully we tried Nitro Swim's Technique and Fitness class. I noticed a difference in the first month! Things that I as a former swimmer had been trying to get them to fix for years are finally happening. The small class sizes give them so much more direction than our summer swim coaches are able to give. The coaches have all been super personable and extremely encouraging to the swimmers. At times they let parents know during class about accomplishments the swimmers have made and how good they're doing. Staff have always been very helpful when I've had questions. I see a long future for my family at Nitro!

I cannot recommend Nitro enough. My kids have attended the toddler/parent classes, Nitro 1, Nitro 2, and most recently the technique and fitness class. The coaches really take the time to make sure the kids are comfortable with what they are learning and have so much patience! My kids strength and love for swimming has grown exponentially! The technique and fitness class has prepared my little swimmer for the expectations of swim team and has greatly improved her form!

So much great!!! And a lot of awful. The swim coaches are really encouraging and friendly with parents and kids, while still maintaining a focus on the skills to be learned. I was worried initially about the coaches always rotating, but it was fine! They were all punctual, patient, and attentive. Big shout out to Bryant, Isaac, Lelah, and Eliza!
After researching options for children’s swim classes in FW, Nitro seemed like the right choice in all regards. There are several classes offered – child, adult, or family, then competitive or educational, then private or group, and within each there are 10 levels of proficiency. The class is 30 min, and the kids are set up early full 30 minutes is used for instruction. And there is always an extra coach on deck in case of an emergency. But there are two things that really set Nitro apart: The first is the teaching format - students progress through the 10 levels at their own pace, which I loved! At each class, if you are able to attain the skill you've been taught, then you advance to the next level. The second thing is the student to coach ratio of 1:3. There were even days when the ratio was 1:1 if other kids had to cancel that day!
There's plenty of parking. The facility is clean and tidy. When you enter, there is a Kiosk, then just beyond are rows of seating for parents facing a glass wall which shared with the pool room. Just off that is a locker room. There are several bathrooms, private changing rooms, cubbies, and blow dryers for your hair in winter.
Now for the awful - the business side of Nitro is a mess. All the information I listed above I pieced together on my own. Do not expect an employee to review policies, billing, teaching format, or protocol with you. If you want to sign up for classes, you can call, but you will be directed to the website. Which is not at all intuitive or user friendly. On your first day, you are not given a tour, you aren’t given a packet with information or paperwork, you don’t “check-in”. You just figure out that a coach will eventually come and call your class time, and your child should line up. After a few classes, you may want to chat with a coach to review your child’s progress; this is not offered. If the child completes a level, no one will tell you after class, you will learn by an email. Perhaps you could just watch really closely, but only if you know the curriculum ... Which you can figure out if you ask or happen to stumble upon the 8.5x11 piece of paper taped to a wall. If you want to make a payment or report an absence, you can’t talk to the front desk or call, you’ll be directed to the darn website again. If you want to schedule a make-up class, you CAN call, but during a specific three hour window on the exact day that you would like to come in -_- In regards to billing, credit cards are auto-run every month, but there is no option to cancel. You must call before the 15th of the month or you are charged for the next entire month. I called two days late unaware of the policy, and was told that the billing had already begun, and I would have to call back at the start of the next month if I wanted to cancel for two months from now. I was peeved, so I checked my statements; no payment was pending or completed. I called back and asked to speak to a manager. It was the manager. I asked to speak to the owner. They refused without apology or courtesy.
I was forcibly withdrawn from the school (which I guess is what I ultimately wanted) but not the unreasonable confrontation. I left the school feeling disrespected and frustrated. I'll admit I lost my temper with the manager. She doesn’t decide how the business is run, she is doing her job. But I also felt talked down to, with robotic half answers to my questions, and constantly having to figure things out for myself. We also realized, after studying the curriculum, that students don’t learn to not-drown until Level 4. I was very surprised that pool safety wasn’t taught right away. Overall, we'll miss it, but they need to drastically improve admin and customer service.

The only complaint I have is the attendance policy. They require a 24hour notice for an absence but you can only call between 10-1 on the day OF that you want to do the make up. Isn’t more notice better than the day of? And if you miss the THREE HOUR window to call them they won’t let you book. If I know a week in advance that I’m going to miss a class but I can make another class I have to wait until THAT DAY to call. I should be able to cancel the same day then.

My 2 year old has so much fun. Most, not all, but most instructors do a wonderful job and keep an ok pace. We've only had one instructor that kept a fantastic pace so that the kids could actually enjoy the activity. We had one pair who didn't even let every kid go down the slide and were honestly terrible, but we only had them once. The other half dozen times it was great. The pool is usually warmed too.

Edited- after two weeks of communication and a third week where we had given up, Nitro finally decided to refund our money. Thank you for correcting your mistake; however, it shouldn't take a negative review to do the right thing by your customers.

My daughter attended Shephard's Swim School last summer. We loved it so much that we decided to give the new owners, Nitro, a chance. While we didn't have any issues with the manager or teachers at our location, the owners have some seriously flawed policies. If you read reviews from their other locations (i.e. Cedar Park where they're based out of in Texas), you will see that I am not the only one who has had issues.

Due to a glitch from when I submitted my online withdrawal form (almost 3 weeks ahead of the deadline), I was still charged the $97 for the next month. I didn't know it failed to go through until my account was charged, and then I immediately called Nitro to get it figured out. The local manager tried extremely hard to straighten everything out; however, the owner refuses to budge and is basically stealing money from us. It is the most ridiculous thing I have ever had to deal with. I called to speak with the owner myself, and was told that I would receive a call back by the end of the day. That never happened. This is the absolute worst customer experience I have ever had to deal with. Now instead of just refunding our money, they are losing a customer for next summer. I had planned on enrolling my daughter again along with what will be her baby brother (due in November).

The only issue I had with the "lessons" themselves was that there was no consistent scheduling. It would be much more effective for a child to have the same instructor week after week. After reading the reviews from the other locations, I can see that this is something the swim school does in general and is not necessarily this location's fault.

The last thing I want to point out is that any reviews on here from a year ago or longer are referring to the previous swim school- Shephard's. It is very misleading for those great reviews to be representing a company that was not in the area at that time. They should be removed.

Before I begin telling you my story of how Nitro Swim School stole $100 from my family, I implore you to read other reviews of Nitro locations across the US as the situation I am stating here is not an isolated incident. It has happened repeatedly without any change in the company’s policy. Now my story:

My daughter swam at this location during the Summer of 2018 without problems. As other have stated reviewing other Nitro locations, they have a policy where if you do not withdraw by the 15th of the month prior to when you plan on leaving/discontinuing lessons you will be charged for the next month. Besides the fact that this seems (to quote another unhappy customer at their home location in Texas) "draconian" on their part, my wife and I understood this. Because my wife is a teacher and cannot keep bringing my daughter to swim lesson during the school year, she submitted a withdrawal form on the 27th of June while inquiring about the process to the staff on hand at the time. After my wife submitted the withdrawal form online, we went about our lives. Fast forward to July 20th, when a nearly $100 charge comes out of our account from Nitro. We immediately called the location to find out what happened. They claim that no submission was made for my family to withdraw for August.

We politely request that they check whatever system logs those requests and contact us again. After several back and forth communications, we discover that we should have received an email that stated the submission was complete following a confirmation page after the initial submission. However, nowhere on the withdrawal form page does it state this information (at least at the time of this writing 7/25/18). Along with this information, Nitro has notes on their system regarding my wife’s inquiries about withdrawing my daughter from class and we provided them a history of my wife’s phone showing she accessed the withdrawal form on the date in question. No movement on their end; to quote a communication with them, “You say “It’s the principle of the thing” which I totally understand. However, please know that it is equally the principle of the thing for Nitro, as well. Nitro is a successful and growing company because of the way it has been handled thus far.”

This leads me to several conclusions about their 15th of the month policy when money is drawn out against the customer’s wishes: First, they make an additional amount of money on customers who become disgruntled with this policy (much like we have) and do not attend the extra month, in effect giving Nitro a “donation” of whatever money was withdrawn. Second, customers extend their lessons with Nitro for an extra month because they already have their money and refuse to give it back. Either way, Nitro makes more money. If retaining customers was in a fact the goal, a partial refund option should be on the table (which I attempted to explore with management but to no avail), because you cannot tell me with a straight face that my whole payment goes toward business expenses. At least a portion of it must be pure profit for them to be a “successful” business. There would be a transaction cost component (pulling the money out of a customer’s account), a scheduling component (understanding how many students they will have), then a profit component. By refusing to refund any of our money, Nitro is effectively telling me, “We care more about this extra $100 going into our account than retaining you as a customer for the future.” This has been one of the most horrible customer service experiences I have had in my life and we will not be continuing our relationship with Nitro past this year.

Also, similar to the other Google Reviewer, I should point out that all reviews before Anna Hockman’s below are for Shephard’s Swim School who previously owned this location NOT for Nitro. The actual “5-Star Review” of Nitro would be 2.5 stars taking the erroneously attributed reviews out of the equation.

The difference is the teaching was effective. My kids went to another place in Fort Wayne for over a year and learned only to enjoy being in the water. When they went to Shepard's they actually learned to swim and quickly. The price difference was significant but the difference between the 2 was more significant. My daughter in 8 weeks was proficient in all strokes and was able to swim independently. I felt safe if she would fall in the water etc. Can't say enough good stuff about Shepard's.
