I kid you not, I am first time climber and had a near death experience. I am Syrian (sad) so I sweat a lot naturally, and boy did this sweat make me slip! I fell, I think it had to have been at least 50ish feet, and the only thing that caught me and saved my life from the vicious grips of death himself was a very aware worker named Luken!!!!! Thank you Luken and praise be to Allah as I know you were sent by him πŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌπŸ™πŸΌ

I’ve been climbing at Hoosier heights for almost a year. It has been a wonderful experience. The gym has some of the best climbing walls in the state with both height and number of different angles. The staff are incredibly helpful and passionate about climbing. The setting is constantly rotating and providing new and interesting things to climb. I don’t find myself ever getting bored even going 3 times or more a week. The constant refresh of new routes keeps me engaged and has been transformative to my overall fitness. There is still much that I haven’t even scratched the surface on with the harder routes of the lead wall and bouldering. There is tons of room to grow and more challenges for years to come. Highly recommend Hoosier heights for anyone who wants to get a good workout but doesn’t want to feel like a workout. When you are having fun it doesn’t seem like a workout at all.

This was so FUN to do. If you want to Conquer your fear of heights this is the place to do it. It was definitely a full workout. The space is great... alot of variety. It is definitely a fun outing for ALL age groups.

The staff was very nice and accommodating.

Very kid friendly, for both my 4.5 year old and 8 year old. Appreciate the kid's club and team options and all the safety training. Great after school activity for those who aren't into team sports or need to get energy out without competition.

This gym is a bucket-list must for any enthusiastic climber!

Their huge, inverse bouldering tower with a sponge pit below is one of a kind...and SO much fun!!!

I live out of state, and I will be coming back to this gym. πŸ˜‰

What a great space! We were taking a trip with her to New York City for her 13th birthday and went to Indy the afternoon before our early morning g flight. Our daughter is just starting to get more interested in climbing. We wanted to give her an authentic climbing gym experience, and this location was perfect. Very friendly staff with easy orientation and lots of options to climb.

It's an okay climbing gym. The routes are very confusing because they use a combination of tape and colored holds to map out each route. It's also grigri only, which was a big turn off to my wife and I as my wife is left handed and belays as such (but of course left-handed grigris don't exist). I wish I'd have known that before going as I don't think we would have made the trip since it was out of our way otherwise. The snake feature is cool, but it's novelty wears off after one or 2 attempts if you already have experience climbing lead. And in the summer time, it was super hot. Not sure if the AC was being serviced or something, but it was pretty rough to climb for an extended period of time.

I have been a member for a little under 3 years, and have observed the gym really go down hill in that time in terms of quality for a casual climber.

The gym seems more focused on holding competitions every couple of months than setting quality routes consistently - there must be more money in that than making for a worthwhile experience for someone who wants to come enjoy climbing a few times a week.

There are currently 4 auto belays with non-comp routes, and they haven't been changed for the last 3 months (routes frequently sit around for up to 4 months). Anything else you want to climb on top rope or an auto belay is a comp route.

When I started coming to Hoosier Heights the route setting was much more consistent and interesting, but at this point with all of the gym being dedicated to comp climbing (I don't care for the style and most of the routes are generally beyond my skill range) I unfortunately don't think this gym is really meant for me anymore, or for people who aren't hardcore climbers trying to grind.

We took our kids here just try something new and all of us fell in love with this place with the very first climb. There are plenty of options/variations to keep you busy for hours. What surprised me the most was they also have a nice gym with new weight lifting equipment, yoga classes and plenty of other β€˜non-climbing’ activities. I highly recommend giving them a try, you will be pleasantly surprised!

As someone new to the whole climbing experience this was the best gym we have visited. My wife and I are very much beginners and have been trying different place to climb. Hoosier Heights is by far the best overall experience. The staff was very friendly and helpful, the video was supper informative for a beginner, and the facilities were awesome. There is plenty of diversity and we felt like there was a lot we didn't get to try in just one visit. We will be back to explore more!!

Nice facilities. Staff was great. Quick to get us climbing. Bouldering was great, and well set. Top rope was a bit frustrating with the style of marking. But it didn't detract from our time there. Well laid out and open. Will visit again next time in town.

From Ca and gym climb regular. In town for a week checking out the local gyms. I’m super impressed by this place from the size routes diversity. I’m a lead climber but was super happy to get on a spray wall. This place is way better than my gym in so cal. Only thing I don’t like is the tape system for routes. It’s very difficult for me to find holds but really it was a good challenge. The grading seems pretty legit compared to outdoor which is cool. Hard boulders.

Can't believe I haven't written a review of this place yet. Have only good things to say about this place... the staff is friendly and helpful, especially Julie, she's the best! Really nice place to climb, seems very safe and professional.

The only time I really haven't enjoyed climbing here is when there are parties with 50 kids running around on the mats and I'm scared of squishing one of them. But no worries, you guys can't control that, you're doing a great job!

Very happy with our birthday party experience today, I wish I could remember the guys name who was the lead for parties now, but he was great. They had two staff members assigned to our party of 15. Both staff members were engaged and involved with the children and monitoring the event closely the entire time. Good mix of private climbing walls in the party room for an hour or so before cake, plus the chance to do the β€œsnake” and more outside the room after cake. The kids like the staff so much, they were chanting for the staff to try the snake. All of our attendees were very happy with their experience. The check-in was a bit bumpy because most of the kids had waivers signed in advance, but there were a few parents that got slowed down having to sign facility waivers which sort of defeated the purpose of signing kids waivers in advance.

This place is absolutely awesome. I came with my three boys (ages nine, seven, and four) and everyone was extremely friendly. The girl at the front desk got us checked in and watching the intro video within five minutes of walking in. We had shoes and gear within 10. It was very efficient. The walls are amazing and are better than just about any climbing gym I’ve ever seen. There was constant Bob Marley playing at just the right volume and we had an absolutely amazing time. We will 100% be back.

This is one of my favorite places to be in the area! I love that the route setters work hard to change out the routes regularly & strive for utilizing different styles. So many routes to choose from. I so appreciate the care that the managers take to ensure safety on the wall. I appreciate that they work to creat and maintain a clean environment. When I start to notice hold begin to get build up, sure enough they are set for a route change and are like new soon enough. I love the community you can get involved in and get to know other climbers and improve yours skills. Thanks for continuing to strive for this environment. I have met so many great climber and staff members. Climbing has help me get into the best shape my life. ❀️

I was a member here for all of 2023. I had a really bad run-in with the manager Spencer, resulting in my wife and I eventually cancelling our membership.

To expand on this, my wife, coworker and I were doing toprope. They are relatively newer climbers but were certified at HH. I was watching my wife belay my coworker on like a 5.9 or something, and Spencer (who we didn't know was an employee at the time) came up and told my wife to immediately lower her partner. We were like...uhhh...okay? Who are you? Sure? he came at us at like 100mph.

After lowering her partner, he asked if we were all toprope certified so of course we said yes. He said okay I'm going to double-check on that. Can you imagine this guy, same age as us (mid 30s) doesn't take our word on the fact we are belay certified at their gym? We had been climbing for like 1.5 hours at this point and I was getting super embarassed as I wanted my wife and my coworker to have a good experience here.

He came back and said yes, you're certified, the reason I told you to stop was because you had too much slack in your rope. Like a cop lol. Look, I've been climbing since I was a kid. I was watching them. It was a little loose but nowhere near any reason for concern. He tried to teach my wife (remember, new to climbing) how to do a more advanced technique and she just kept saying I want to belay the beginner way, the way you teach at the gym. I told him the rope was a little sticky (which it really was) and he took the equipment and said he'd have his team look at it. lol.

like dude, treat us with respect as customers at your gym. It really wasn't anything to even make a passing remark at, but he comes over and starts yelling at us like we're kids. I was furious mostly beacuse they have kids running around (whatever) that are like 6 years old clipping themselves into the autobelays, even though it's against their rules, but no one cares. So why us? We are always quiet and respectful, and I was watching them the whole time.

I'm getting older now and just want to climb in peace. I didn't make a fuss, but what I did was cancel my membership. Spencer, you're a jerk manager who lost 3 memberships because you were power-tripping.

As a member of this gym for the last 6+ years it has seen no improvement and gradual decline. For one of the biggest gyms in indiana they feel the need to crowd the wall with narrow climbs and 3 routes per rope. Every rope has 3 routes pacted inside a 3 foot lane. Also hope you like crimps cause they don't hold budget to get anything bigger. With climbs so narrow and packed full its rare to see fun or interesting climbs especially at higher levels. The gym is still dusty with no dust collection.

Water damaged several rooms from 8 m ago have not been fixed and just damaged and unoccupied. The birthday party room is included in the water damage so parties don't even have a proper room. That is if can schedule a B-day party because the computer system keeps dropping and their 1 man IT service doesn't care. The dojo was torn down for new climbing walls that have been delayed in construction multiple times. The gym looked rough when I joined and now is just in disrepair.

As an employee for the past 1.5 years at the gym manager get support from the owner or president. The president shows up at 7 am (the gym opens at 11 am), climbs on his shift and is rude to most staff members who don't even know who he is. You will meet the manager, owners, and presidents of every other gym in Indy being apart of the community, but at hoosier they clock out by 3pm.

6 months ago the gym had youth climbing teams, that had nationally ranked team members. Now since the president kept firing coaches that rubbed him wrong (but were still good employees) team doesn't really exist anymore. They give no support to team and only criticism.

Every other gym has a great community surrounding it but Hoosier heights just doesn't care. 90% of the staff are high school students who will either be off to college soon or they just don't care. This leads to not being able to get a top rope or lead test cause the staff is new and undertrained.

It could be a good gym but management either doesn't care or they don't get the support they need from upper management is is just doing the bare minimum to make the most amount of profit. The gym needs people who care and Ryan Fischer doesn't care.

I was very unpleased with my experience here. My son knows his manners and respectful of safety and personal space but the 5 staff sitting at the desk kept yelling at my son for being a kid. Not kid friendly for ages 5 and below and we're making my son cry. Nice routes, just always a hassle with the staff here. Add a kids room with your unused space. Maybe a kids foam pit? Idk. Something NMB doesn't have. Just an idea

The place seems pretty cool but the workers there are not helpful or friendly at all. At least when I went with my friend. It was our first time there and we have never lead climbed before. They didn't show us anything and if we asked questions they gave us a side eye like "how did you not know?" Like dude, we said this is our first time at this location help us. We didn't get an orientation or walk-through. The place lowkey sucked bc they also have "members only" spots. Like why tho? If you're gonna pay 25 dollars for a day pass I want the whole experience. Walked in planning to climb and saw a bunch of woke flags. I asked the obviously woke girl at the desk about it and got the usual woke diatribe and was told to leave (just for asking). Great people skills.

15 minutes later, we ended up at Climb Time, and had a great experience. Climb Time has been fun every time we go, without the pretense.

This is a recreation, people, and we dont live in San Fran. Climbing may be trendy here, but it's passΓ© in other places. Everyone's money is green, if you don't want mine, which you obviously don't, then that's fine.

Hoosier heights is my favorite Indianapolis area rock climbing gym! It has some of the longest indoor routes I’ve ever been on and the lead wall and it’s prowl is fantastic. The snake is a super unique addition too that I love. I don’t boulder as much but when I do the sets at Hoosier Heights aren’t just jug ladders and make you think a bit :) In between hitting the New and the Red this is my favorite gym to train at hands down!

Terrible gym, terrible management, terrible treatment of employees. || Don’t even think about going when team kids are climbing, because they will take whole areas of the bouldering wall and you’ll be left waiting 10-15 minutes for a try at your route

Also the snake foam pit has water at the bottom and is moldy.

My son ate the foam pit foam and went to the ER. Just about a month ago, I had my 12 year old son's birthday party here. It was an utter and total disaster. I scheduled the party three months out and three days before the party they postponed it on us for two months. Eventually the party happened but the awful supervision of the kids led to my son and a 23 year old man I've never seen before digging to the bottom of the foam pit. I do not know how to describe the fear a father feels when hearing this man call my son pretty. In the end my son inhaled so much mold and mice droppings form the foam pit that he ended up with Hentavirus in the ER. It took two months for him to return to school from this . This gym has s combination of bouldering (lots and lot of bouldering), belay, and lead rope. The difficulty definitely ranges, I would not say this is necessarily a beginner's gym for bouldering but it's friendlier to beginner than other climbing gyms I have been to as far as difficulty.

The atmosphere: the staff are friendly and laid back. The gym is massive and has an old feeling to it, more lightning would be nice. There is a workout space for members upstairs.

There is plenty to experience and try for this gym, I definitely recommend it.

First off, the staff at this location is great. The gym had a lot of room and the snake is a great attraction. My partner and I came from out of town to boulder and to climb the snake. My rating is based on the setup of the boulder problems and the small amount of space dedicated to bouldering. The problems are set up with mixed color holds with a different color tape beside them, making it very hard to find what route goes where - especially when you're already on the wall and can't see the tape. We we constantly finding we had used the wrong holds. This gym also has ninja training obstacles, but they're only available to members, so that was a bit of a bummer.

A top rope and lead climbing focused gym. If you're looking for high walls or to do a lot of lead climbing, then Hoosier Heights should be a consideration. There is also a decent amount of bouldering and it was graded true to the V scale. All around, routes are set really well.

The orientation video covers all of the basics of bouldering and top rope. It explains how to top rope in case you need a reminder before going through their certification. If you're an experienced climber, you'll probably consider this a wasted 15 minutes because there is a mandatory guided walkthrough of the gym that happens afterwards where you can ask the usual questions you would ask when visiting a new gym.

If you're staying in the area for a short while or are just visiting, be aware that the training areas that are only available to members.. So a day pass doesn't get you access to the gym equipment or the ninja warrior equipment.

As far as the store, if you need to buy shoes, they have a large selection of climbing shoes from a variety of brands. But if you need anything other than shoes or a harness you won't find it here.

Comments that are really just complaints: $25 is high for a first time visit day pass, and I find it strange that there can be 5 people working (not including the route setters) and yet no one is trained to do a lead climbing certification (not the class, just a certification).

We are experienced climbers that showed up at Hoosier Heights Sunday early evening because they have great Sunday hours compared with our usual gym. The facility looked nice, and there was ample staff to cover customer service and safety. They said they do not have staff to give a belay test β€” not even for top rope. We are very easy going people and it seems very unusual to get poor customer service in a climbing gym. They let us walk out the door. I’ve never experienced this at a climbing gym. Ever. I bought a 75 dollar lead climbing class through Hoosier Heights 9 months ago. The staff were incredibly rude and would not allow me to test out stating I needed to take their class (an obvious money grab). For 6 months they refused to provide the class even though I PAID 75 dollars for it. Finally after multiple incredibly rude text messages from the GM I was able to get tested out without taking the class. I still have not been refunded the 75 dollars. This gym is completely unorganized with its scheduling causing many birthday parties and classes to be over booked or canceled all together. Ryan who is second in command at the gym isn’t even in the gym most days when I tried to schedule the lead class he took sometimes weeks to respond. Ryan is the only one who can provide the class. In his own words he said β€œI only get around to responding to member emails when I feel like it and the same goes for the classes I teach”. The foam pit underneath the snake is full of mold and isn’t washed at all it has obvious signs of rodents chewing the foam blocks. It has years of filth in it and is a health code violation waiting to happen. There are tons of mice that live in the gym their droppings are all over. It is poorly air conditioned and in winter it isn’t heated very well. The staff are constantly making rude comments to climbers and members. I’ve witnessed several times staff members called someone a p***y for not climbing farther and would refuse to lower the climber off the wall. Overall it is a toxic environment and a revolving door of both members and staff. There are much better gyms in the Indianapolis area. I would not waste your money and time here.

My first time in 10 years taking my 4 year old to rock climb- I was anxious walking in, as a fat bodied person with LGTBQ+ family. The staff were wonderful, they made us feel right at home. We wore masks and saw other climbers masked and unmasked as well. They really explained everything thoroughly and we will be returning for sure, it is expensive but next time Ill pack a lunch and some snacks and spend the day. It’s a fun spot for sure for parents and kiddos. I’m planning on going alone for a self care afternoon too.

this place is terrible… staff is horrible… everything is members only… wouldn’t go even if it was the last place on earth.. overheard a staff member not letting him down the wall when he asked many times to. and then proceeded to call the costumer and i quote a β€œwussy”… unbelievable.

2022 12 21: Update to the original review
After I posted the review and emailed everyone I could find on the Hoosier Heights website, we were placed in all of the appropriate lists. The new Rec team coordinator Serena has been great so far and we are receiving all the communication. I am changing the review from one star to three stars and will continue to update the review if needed.
***
My daughter is part of the rec team at Hoosier Heights since May 2021. She attends twice a week for two hours each. While I like the facility, the communication is terrible at best.
Twice the practice was cancelled and we didn't know until we drove 30 mins to turn around and go back home. In both situations we were told by the front office to contact the coach to make sure we were properly notified. Last week we found out from our daughter that there would be a competition on Saturday, Dec 4th, 2021. Yesterday, Friday, the day before the competition was the second time practice cancelled and we were not notified. I told the office in person that we didn't know the details about the competition and they told me verbally that check in is between 8am-10am. This morning when we arrived at 9:30am, we were told that we didn't have any registration at the checkin table. They told me to talk to Jessi, the teams head coach at Hoosier Heights. She directed me to talk to the tournament official to see if my daughter can still compete and I was told no by the official. My daughter was really sad by that time as this was going to be her first competition. I went back to Jessie to find out why we were not given proper information. Jessie confirmed we were not in her email list and gave me the email of her coach Bryce(sp?) to contact him. She said she has not checked her email since Thursday afternoon. My daughter didn't want to stay and watch any of the competition so we left.

Now my thoughts about the entire situation:
Front Desk : When we tell you several times that we are not getting information about schedule changes or tournaments, PLEASE DON'T TELL ME to email this person and that person. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure our emails and phone numbers are included in the appropriate lists. Just Do it !

Jessie (coordinator) :
When a parent comes to you with a problem, first thing you should do is to start with taking responsibility by apologizing for the mishap, talk to my daughter and comfort her. Jessie has not addressed my daughter, who was standing next to me, throughout our entire conversation. The only apology was a robotic "I am sorry" to me as we were parting our way at the end of the conversation.

When I come to you to tell you my daughter is not registered because we didn't know we were supposed to because we were not provided any information about the tournament, don't direct me to talk to the tournament official by myself, take initiative and responsibility, come with me to explain the situation. You know these officials, not me.

Similar to front desk, don't ask me to email you and coach Bryce so we can get in your lists. Take responsibility and say " you know what, I will make sure you are in on the lists and confirm back to you. I am sorry this happened, I will make sure this will not happen again." That is what a coordinator should DO ! I didn't hear any of this commitment from you and your body language was not telling me that you actually cared about the situation.

Bryce: We received one communication from you very early on and nothing since. It is obvious what you should do. Our email and phone numbers in the system are accurate, we confirmed with the front desk. Make sure they are included in your communication. Or they may be included in your list but you are not notifying the parents properly at all, which is another problem.

I will make sure the upper management is aware of this review and I will keep updating this review until things get better.

Hoosier Heights has been a second home for our son for nearly 8 years, and has allowed him to travel the country to compete in bouldering, lead and speed climbing. The coaches are like family, and go above and beyond to support the team kids. The connection to teammates and coaches was amazing throughout Covid, including regular Zoom team workouts and detailed home workout plans to keep kids in shape and maintain morale. Jessi does an incredible job of keeping families informed about USA Climbing rules/events via email, the team FB page, and regular parent meetings. She has always been quick to answer any questions we have. Thanks to the gym facilities and coaching, Hoosier Heights team kids compete on the regional, divisional, and national level. HH also offers recreational climbing for kids who enjoy the sport but not competition. Beyond team, climbing at Hoosier Heights is fun for all ages, and is an amazing way to get in shape, reduce stress, and feel part of a supportive community. Highly recommend!

The gym itself is fine. Good mix of bouldering and top roping with multiple lead climbing options. The customer service was where this gym is lacking. Most gyms I've been to either charge the same or give you a discount for your first time with them. This gym charges you extra for your first day because they have you watch a video about the gym and then get a "tour." The video was more of a tour than the tour. I also had to wait 10-15 minutes for someone to check my friend and I off for belaying. It was not busy. Just when I thought we were going to get help the staff started helping a friend that had just shown up. Once he finally did help he very much mansplaned everything. I'd go somewhere else.

After two years of being a member, I had to cancel my membership. The facility has some sort of bug problem. Bug bites all over my legs that look like bed bugs. Several emails to management and no response. Not the kind of customer service you'd expect with a membership fee that is so high. Not good and I am disappointed in the complete lack of response.

Facility is amazing. My kids had a blast!! I didn’t see a place to get water and masks were required, so plan ahead for those things. I wish there was someone to help us belay (sp?) or offer me a refresher so we could climb all the walls. All in all it was a fun afternoon with the family.

This is a nice gym. There is plenty of variety in their routes and the staff is friendly and helpful as needed. Theyll show you an orientation video and give you a tour, and their training for belay is thorough to satisfaction for newcomers and they won't let you on your own until you've demonstrated competence, else you can opt out and always just boulder. They also have auto belays so you can climb the walls without a partner, though there's far fewer of these. 7 or 8, as I recall. Each with 2 or 3 routes set on them. My only real complaint is more a testament to their popularity... they are often very busy and dealing with crowds is a frustrating regularity. I just try to go when I know they're not usually too busy. It can be a nuisance feeling like you have to fight for a turn on a rope, or a turn on a boulder problem. Its true that most patrons are fairly considerate and aware, but most definitely not all are. Crowds of kids arrive on certain days at certain times and they are often poorly supervised. Again, I just try to avoid these times. But overall, these cons are really not the gyms fault, and they are avoidable. Otherwise the facility is very good for its purpose. Ive been a member for probably a collective year to year and a half. And would recommend it to anyone looking to try climbing.

Absolutely the best climbing gym in Indiana. I've been climbing here on and off for 4 years now.

Staff is experienced and friendly, and the atmosphere is super casual. They have routes for everyone: plenty of easy auto belay routes all the way up to tougher projects like the 40+ foot lead climbing wall.

Let's be honest, if you're thinking about climbing in the pandemic, you already know what you're getting yourself into. But they're doing a great job enforcing mask policies, selling alcohol-based liquid chalk to disinfect while you climb, and they even have "clean" and "dirty" bins to get rid of the pens you'll use to sign your receipt. Really doing what they can to make sure it's as safe as can be.

COVID has also scaled back their repertoire, but in the usual season they also offer Yoga classes for members, Climbing 101, lead climbing lessons, bouldering tournaments, youth league, and tons more. I haven't even mentioned the Ninja Warrior course, pool table, Snake climbing feature, or member exclusive gym area.

If you're looking for a regular place to climb, definitely come hang out; you'll find a great community of people to build you up. If you're just looking for a neat date night or fun place to take the kids for the day, you'll find plenty to love, and the staff will make sure you have everything you need to climb safely and have a good time.

Amazing place with amazing staff. My son is an avid climber and loves the new routes every week. They have a great top out wall, with routes that are fitting for beginner climbers all the way up. With 3 different boulder areas my kid is in heaven. The staff has always been helpful with answering our climbing questions and helping with choosing the right gear for us. Great place to expend lots of energy and present a fun challenge.

Kids had a great time for $14 each. Staff was nice. Most people were their masks at all times. I saw a group of teen girls that weren't wearing their masks and I didn't see anyone say anything to them. I don't agree with posting political beliefs in businesses because it makes me uncomfortable. It's their business though and I support their right to do so.

Nice place! Lots of belay routes, a decent smattering of auto-belay, and plenty of bouldering! Ninja training area is neat, although I don't use it. Would like it a bit more if the holds were color coded, instead of labeled with colored tape. Maybe geared a little more toward the casual walk in than someone seriously training, though they definitely have plenty for both crowds

Stopped by here while traveling for work by myself. The staff and local climbers were friendly and helped me feel welcome. The bouldering alone was enough to keep me busy all night. There are great setters that work here, I enjoyed the flow of the different problems. The different features on the walls felt unique, lending itself to all forms of climbing. The "snake" free solo pillar was a blast to try. I have never seen something like that before, it really gets the adrenaline pumping when climbing over the top.
