Best gym in the Midwest, no question about it!
Clean, great facilities, a lot of boulders, kilter, moon 2019, and tension board (I heard soon to be TB2). Good price for all the amenities included!

This is such a rad gym with bouldering (no ropes) climbing routes offered for your beginner climber to your experienced one. There is an awesome shop where you can buy gear, clothes and other items- pretty pricey, but quality stuff. There’s a great weights setup for lifting. Upstairs is a cool little cafe with yummy food and drink- perfect for fueling up before and after climbing. I love coming here and recommend this fantastic gym to everyone!

Updated Sept 25:
The entire 7 months I’ve been a member, towels have consistently been an issue. First it’s “we need more/new dryers,” then it’s another delay and “we need to build a bigger laundry room.” Now it’s the end of September, this was supposed to have already been resolved. And it has now been delayed YET AGAIN to November. Being a large-scale gym and not planning for large-scale towel use is beyond me. They have provided no discounts/credits to customers for this service being out. The locker rooms are dead because no one wants to bring nasty shower/sauna towels back and forth when it’s something the gym is supposed to provide. Outsource your laundry services, buy more towels, or figure something out to meet members in the middle instead of passive-aggressively putting up signs that offer no true solutions. I’m over this place, based on their lack of customer care and BS fake empathy. They also want you to pay $12/month for pausing your membership….so $12 for nothing when $75 can’t even provide towels? Get real.
End of edit. Cancelled my membership entirely. Do better.
Fun place to be with decent facilities, but some of the staff is rude and dismissive. For claiming to be a place that is welcoming to all, some team members seem openly annoyed with concerns and can treat members like inconveniences.
I sent an email outlining some concerns and the reply was littered with harmful rhetoric, bordering on Ableism and Classism. It’s the best space of its kind in the area, but the ethos seems to only be skin deep in certain cases.
You’ll have a blast if you keep to yourself, bring your own towel, and don’t bother the staff. Happy climbing!

Update: I’ve been a member at this gym for 6 months. For this entire time, they’ve had problems keeping enough clean towels out. Now they have stopped doing them altogether until further notice. There really should be a discount when you’re having issues providing services to members. 6 months is long enough to figure it out; buy more towels, upgrade your laundry room, or outsource laundry services.
Great facilities and atmosphere, but the staff can be dismissive when concerns are brought to them. I get the feeling my use of the gym is treated as an inconvenience to staff rather than a service I pay for.

Update September 22nd (Summer has been over) and now we are being told deters won't be here until winter, and that we no longer are being provided towels at all. It's as if the management and owners just have zero clue how to operate a business. They'd rather walk around and bullshit with the clients, rather than do their jobs, and provide the amenities they are charging us for. "No towels for the foreseeable future" is the sign that was up today, yet still being charged full price.
Old review:
And they are back to not providing towels because management and ownership here, failed it's clientele yet again. With as much money as this place rales in, you'd assume the could buy so many laundry machines. Or better yet, out source it to one of the five uniform / laundering services in Indy, so your employees can focus on maintaining and cleaning the gym, rather than doing laundry and folding towels.
If only this gym took as much pride in being a good gym, like they do being a pride gym.
Also, they say the problems change every Tuesday and Thursday, but it's a lot closer to every other Tuesday and Thursday. Current walls, excluding one, been up over a month now.

I have been going to North Mass Boulder ever since it opened. The bouldering routes are both fun and challenging. In my experience, the general atmosphere/culture is very welcoming and all the staff are friendly. I never enjoyed group fitness classes in the past, but thought I would give North Mass classes a try and now I’m hooked! The wide variety of fitness and yoga classes available is so nice. Shout out to Jordyn Dorsey! Her Strength & Conditioning classes are my favorite!

The gym offers quite a lot: bouldering, free weights and machines, various fitness classes, and a locker room with showers and a sauna.
They would benefit from more regular checks on the locker room, state of the showers, soap and shampoo refills, and clean towels, both in the locker room and for wiping down machines; they do not have enough towels or machines to wash/dry them to keep up with daily use, as they run out at some point every time I'm there.
The employees I've interacted with have been kind and helpful.

I unfortunately didn't get to fully experience this beautiful bouldering gym due to an injury 15 minutes into my session but without hesitation I would give them 5 stars. The staff upon arriving was very friendly and helpful. Right after my injury they were all very attentive and willing to help with anything to provide comfort while I waited for my Uber. This next part is where they went above and beyond. I was visiting for a convention when the accident happened. They followed up with a phone call 3 weeks later just to check in on how I was doing. They even offered a punch card for when I get back on my feet. ( They didn't know I lived out of state) I was blown away and this is one of the reasons I love the climbing community. Thank you North Mass for being one of the best gyms I've ever visited.

Great bouldering walls. The routes are always interesting, reset an adequate amount, and pose a challenge but never feel too difficult or imposing.
The weight area could use additional leg isolation machines, but still provides an adequate number of free weights to get a good workout in.
The cafe is great, even if it is a tad pricey. Free community events are often hosted in the cafe lounge area.
The atmosphere at North Mass is very welcoming and accepting. The owners and members have fostered a great gym culture and positive atmosphere.

Love the bouldering, sauna, and cafe. Great place to spend an afternoon. However, lately the gym has been full of very small children in the main area instead of the kid zone which makes me a bit uneasy. I love that there are group classes however, the ones I have attended have not felt like group classes; very little structure, very chaotic and too many people in a small room. Still recommend the gym of course but there is always room for improvement

Don’t be surprised when you can’t use your $75/mo gym membership when they host their multiple competitions/events throughout the year. They will close the walls for an entire week and offer no recourse besides some extra day passes. If I’m a member why would I need day passes?
Edit: The lack of communication is not the issue, I couldn’t use my gym membership for an entire week in February. I would’ve been happy with a credit on my statement but offering day passes to a member is an insult.

Parking lot is always full. Equipment is mid without much variety. They were having an event and wouldn’t let members workout. I was told at 11a to come back at 5p to workout. At 5pm I came back and started on a treadmill. There was no one around No One and a staff came up to me and said I couldn’t use the treadmill till 5:30p. For what reason? Just because I guess. Cancelled me and my wife immediately after. YMCA Irsay is a better option if you actually want to be able to workout.

Had previously given the gym a 5 star review. Its a great place and the best climbing gym at indy by far. Even has a cafe and a sauna. However they also host some climbing competitions and during this time you cant use the gym for some days. It only happens i think like twice a year. That being said its not a cheap membership and those are days where i just cant use the gym at my convenience. They should compensate members in some way for this. It doesn’t have to be monetary. Heck id be happy just getting a free shirt which for the gym would be free advertisement. But at 800 a year i would expect something for the days that the gym is just not available.

Hands down the best bouldering in Indy. The route setting is amazing and has fantastic variety. The weights area is also far more robust than the other climbing gyms in the city and has enough equipment to hit any routine. In addition, I've found the customer service here to be excellent. What's not to love about North Massive Boulder? The community alone is enough to make this gym special with everyone (members + staff) being friendly and helpful There are always friends to be made during boulder sessions, yoga/fitness classes, or general work outs.
Even if you're not feeling a workout, the gym has meditation classes, game nights, karaoke, crafting days, singles events, beer on draft, a cafe with LOTS of healthy options. There is always something fun going on and always something for everyone.
The membership cost might feel steep at first ($75 per month), but it is so worth it with everything the gym has to offer. This gym has become a third place for me and my wife to visit almost every day though the week, WE LOVE NORTH MASSIVE BOULDER GYM!

Ever since joining North Mass Boulder this past summer, I’ve enjoyed all the cardio machines and free weights nearly each day. I LOVE the big windows that let in so much beautiful light! The other major element here are the terrific instructors. Take a class from Jordyn to kickstart your workout; delve into yoga with Heather, Yvonne, Purvi, Angie, or Stacey…they are all terrific! And there are many more teachers I hope to learn from. Can’t wait to continue using this wonderful space!

Only talking about the climbing aspects of this gym since it is a climbing gym first and foremost - Was pretty underwhelmed with the climbing experience here. Overall flow and quality of the boulders was great, no problems there. For how large this facility is I would expect many many boulders to be on the walls. They seem to want to make the walls sparse with holds/problems which does look aesthetically pleasing but the downside is that I was able to do every boulder in the gym (minus a few hard ones) in an hour and a half. This was not difficult to do. I would be very disappointed by this if I was a regular member here, unless they are setting and stripping constantly. Seems like this gym is mostly for people who like to work out and socialize and maybe casually climb. Wishing it was more climber focused.

I’ve been a member for going on three years. This is the best place to indoor rock climb and make new friendships in all of Indiana. No matter what your size, shape, or fitness level is North Mass makes it accommodating to all. I’ve made so many new friendships in my 20’s and hit new fitness goals I never thought were possible. I absolutely love this place without question. I feel very safe and at home every time I walk through the doors especially with the staff and members being so welcoming and friendly. I also love coming here on a day off from work just to hangout and relax. During the summer they have an outdoor yard with basketball, cornhole and hammocks. Most of the time the cafe has movies playing and they even have game nights and all sorts of events. This is the best place to have a membership to hands down.

So this place is by far the best climbing gym in Indy. The yearly membership rates for the gyms aren’t that different from one another. North Mass by far has the most bang for your buck.
In addition to having the climbing component it also has a regular gym w treadmills and good weight equipment.
It has a sauna.
Has a small recreational basketball “court”.
Has a lawn area where you could do yoga outdoors if you wanted.
And best of all it has a social space upstairs w great seats, food, and reasonably priced beer on the tap.
One thing i will say. It currently is over $700 for the year membership if you are not a student. That comes at just under $2 a day. For me its worth the buck. Would be nice if they included a shirt or cap with the membership since its basically free advertisement.

I look forward to visiting Indy for work because I get to go to NMB for a good session.
I’m not a boulderer, nor am I really much of an indoor climber, but I’ve been to a lot of gyms over the years and this has to be one of the best, one of the most well thought out gyms I’ve visited. It’s almost like they read my mind, learned about all of the things that other gyms have done that irk me and they’ve made it better.
My favorite things about this gym:
- excellent air flow
- access to sinks without having to open doors
- excellent natural light
- amazing training area - kilter, moon, tension, campus, spray, a tread wall(!!!!!!!). A bunch of racks for weight lifting. Ugh, I would be so much stronger if I only climbed and trained here :)
- really cool bouldering wall with varied hold sets - I honestly haven’t gone over there much but when I have I’ve actually enjoyed the set bouldering whereas typically I never do in a gym. The steep stuff is always great and I like the other weird wall that are atypical for other gyms I’ve been to
- cafe - so nice to be able to eat, work, climb in the same place. Great beer on top too
- the store- omg the store has all of the climbing shoes you could wish for. It’s so hard to try on shoes in person anywhere and these guys have SO MANY MODELS.
I hope you guys don’t expand and just keep doing what you’re doing because it’s AWESOME

Incredible climbing/fitness facility! For context, I am an experienced climber and setter in the Cincinnati area (5.7"+4"), and stopped in on a day pass. To start with the amenities, this facility is top of the line. Excellent strength and cardio area with nearly all the equipment a gym rat could want, including classes. The upstairs cafe/bar offers a great selection of food (and beer!!!!) for a pre- or post-workout meal, with plenty of open seating for it to feel comfortable to stay a while. Restrooms, locker rooms, and a gear store all make it a great place to spend a few hours.
Now about the climbing! The style here is unique, visually challenging, and so much fun! The use of large geometric features and volumes is amazing to explore. Grade progression felt appropriate, and the grade overlap lends itself to stress less about the grade, which I hugely appreciate. Utilization of the space was great, climbs were spaced out well enough where you didn't feel like you were on top of other climbers often. Climbs felt very inclusive; I didn't feel like things trended in a tall/short direction. Shout out to the setters! Anytime I'm in indy I'll certainly be stopping in!

I've never been into exercise of any kind much to speak of besides light jogging, but the problem solving aspect of bouldering is incredibly fun.
Also, peace, love, and kindness are a very real thing here. Everybody I've met is super kind, and something about being cheered on by random strangers is wonderful. Thanks North Mass!!

2/7/24 update: I realize now why things seem so crazy busy every night. Members only hours are 6-9 on *Tuesdays only* (see pic below). My perception is that a decent chunk of the peak hour crowds (or other times) is related to guest visitors. It makes WAY more sense now that i know "members only" is only 3 hours per week LOL. My year is nearly up so I'm going with a more member-focused facility instead of continuing here. Of smaller consequence, but still annoying, is that towels/cleaning spray can stay empty for awhile and most spray bottles are kind of busted. Also, I think 2 out of the 3 sinks in the rock climbing area have not worked for, roughly, 6 months or so. Kind of an expensive membership, considering the above.
Come in the mornings if you want to climb.
Decent atmosphere but almost unusable from 5pm through 9pm. Large sections (at least half today) of the rock wall will be blocked off by climbing groups. Not sure if this is a specific activity/training session put on by the gym or if it's just large private groups. Either way, they make it nearly impossible to climb.
Edit: pics added as reference. Note the 100% full cubbies and the fully claimed side walls from large groups.

As an experienced climber, I can say that this gym is among the best bouldering facilities that I’ve ever been to. So much so that I quickly became a member when moving to the area. However, they play TOO MUCH EDM. It would be fine if it were sprinkled into a mix, but I’d rather listen to the vacuum cleaner if I didn’t bring my headphones than hours upon hours of BUM TISS BUM TISS BOWOWOWOWOW. It suck’s. Do better!

I am a proud member of NMB. It makes me so happy and proud to be part of such a diverse and welcoming community. I am not a gym girlie and would have done anything to feel comfortable in a workout setting. I tried NMB as sort of a last hope for me. Upon entering, I received a tour and felt so welcomed by the members, employees, and overall atmosphere. You won’t regret joining NMB if you are looking for a place to call your home gym. I haven’t experienced the climbing aspect of it for myself; However, my son does the youth climbing program and he absolutely adores it. I tend to stick to more of the traditional gym equipment for myself.
It’s worth a try at the very minimum! You won’t be disappointed. Plus, it’s dog-friendly!! And the cafe and coworking space is perfect to come and rot after a workout and read a book while enjoying a cup of coffee.

I'm in town for work only this week. Went to buy a day pass and was turned away because it was a members only night on a weekday night. I get that they are trying to add benefits for members but I drove 40 min there and I wouldn't know it was members only because I'm only in town for 5 days. Not friendly to out of town climbers. What a shame

This gym is almost exclusively modern comp-style bouldering. There are very few problems that would translate outdoors, and they seemed to all be jugs. Why not add a few more, of various grades? People I spoke to throughout the night wanted more and the terrain is well suited for it. For example, the first boulder in the main area is a beautiful arete and could support some seriously awesome problems.
Personally, I disagree with the grading philosophy here, but that isn't factoring in to my review. The color coding is difficult to internalize and the colors span several different grades. I'm not sure that's helpful for long term progression, and, honestly, such systems can often be cover for setters without accurate difficulty perceptions. There is also an article online in which it is said that the setters here are able to set problems beyond their bouldering level. That just cannot be the case--you cannot truly understand and therefore claim a grade unless you have a lot of experience with a grade, or at least the previous grade and know what one more step might feel like.
For me, this gym's saving grace is the training area, which has Kilter, Tension, and Moon, and the group of boulderers that I spent the session with. There were many strong climbers. The spray wall is pretty nice too. These things would make me a member if I lived in town. However, returning to an earlier point, boards aren't necessarily accessible for beginning climbers who aren't into comp-style stuff. So, more outdoor-style problems would be great for that crowd, too.

Fav spot in Indy📍
Climb; eat; yoga; party; read; chill; dance; practice; learn; sing; hang loose & build community.
So many amazing people work there who care and work hard to give you the best experience and keep you safe. I am grateful for the role it continues to play in my life.
The co-owners Zach Donovan and Elliott Steward have a vision for a new ethos of climbing, movement, growth and healing. I appreciate their presence and investment into their business, and giving opportunities for their staff to learn and help build community. They’ve also built a great leadership team (including but NOT LIMITED TO Ellyn Hessong, Winter Caldwell, and Luke Troy).
The front desk has become a home to many and a welcoming face to the members and new guests in the building.
Ellyn Hessong who began at the front desk has worked her way up and now serves in a director position, managing events, community engagement, and most of all fun. There is a theory about third places missing in our communities these days, and she is the heart of the place I call home.
Erica Oakley who leads and manages the Top Out Cafe has embodied the ideals of diversity, equity and inclusion by developing her staff, supporting inclusive hiring practices, and trying new processes to increase customer satisfaction such as new models for tipping and menu changes. Shoutout to Kayla who has brought her family into the heart and soul of North Mass and dedicates so much time to the members.
On the climbing side of things, Thomas Bonifield who leads lives, breathes and creates impactful climbing experiences for our members by investing his team’s development and bringing in climbers from across the world. He’s also built a diverse team who facilitates and leads programs like Women Crush.
Finally, shoutout to the creative team for living and breathing the vision through media and merchandise.
NMB promotes inclusive climbing and will continue to learn how to best do that for the people of Indianapolis. Thank you.
I also recommend checking out the KanKan Cinema, Amelia’s Bread and the other surrounding businesses south of the train tracks.
Also, did I mention you can bike to North Mass Boulder? It’s on the north side of the train tracks and the east side of the city. That area is the heart of Indy in my opinion.

This place is just beyond words amazing. It has absolutely everything you could possibly need for fitness, hanging out and getting some remote work done, or having a bite to eat. And the cost for membership is so reasonable (they even have a student rate). We are so lucky to have North Mass in our neighborhood!
This HUGE converted factory has a climbing area that is the biggest I've ever seen, a cardio workout area with plenty of different types of machines, a weights and lifting space, and two classrooms for guided classes (general workouts downstairs, yoga studio upstairs). All is included free in the membership. Also upstairs is the most comfy and welcoming co-working space with free and fast WiFi, some quiet working spaces you can book yourself with a touch pad on the door, and their awesome cafe! Tons of yummy and healthy food and drink options, plus plenty of coffee and even a bar area for local craft brews or to-go cans for purchase. It also has a little store for climbing and fitness gear. I seriously cannot say enough about this place! And it's also dog- friendly, for well behaved pups on a leash!

I was a member for 6 months and told I could no longer have a personal trainer with me during the hours of 5-8pm due to, “high demand” of the equipment.
Not sure if it was a new policy or just a now enforced one.
So my only time window available was closed. I’m in my thirties and just starting my fitness journey with no previous experience at a gym, so I need help from a trainer. What should I do, show up and “guess” at the equipment and weights? Honestly it’s a safety concern.
Cool place, most of the staff seem cool. But it’s expensive and unusable to me now.
I even emailed a manager about it and got one reply back politely telling me “bummer” essentially.
Feels like they have lost their mission here and are more focused on the money then quality over all.

I joined NMB in January and - this may sound like hyperbole - but this gym has helped me get back to myself in the most powerful, life-changing way! The facilities are fantastic, impeccably clean, and I'm a big fan of the co-working space when I need to get out of my house/office (love the salads). I usually come to walk/lift and use the great sauna in the women's locker room, but I'll also drop in on some classes from time to time and they never disappoint (challenging and fun). But the real stand-out part of NMB is the general vibe/atmosphere: it's welcoming, relaxed and incredibly encouraging (that goes for the staff and members). It just feel so comfortable that I find I genuinely enjoy going to the gym - which makes sticking to my healthy habits easy. THANK YOU for this incredible addition to the Indy community :)

This is a very cool concept gym. Keep in mind, bouldering is SO much harder than it looks. It’s about $20 for a day pass, and you sign a few digital waivers before getting started. To climb, you need to wear specific climbing shoes. Your first time here they rent the shoes to you for free, but after that it’s $5.
There are open wooden cubbies that you can leave your stuff in. The people at the front are so helpful and easy to talk to if you have any questions! The cafe upstairs is a nice spot to rest and maybe work on your laptop.
The actual drinks and food were meh honestly. I got a smoothie and a muffin. The smoothie did taste like “health” but also powdery. The muffin was very dry.

We did a combined 5 and 7 year old birthday party here and all the kids agreed this was the most fun party they had ever been to. We opted to have an instructor lead the kids and that was absolutely the right choice. The instructor was fantastic and did a great job leading the kids. The private party room was the ideal setting for the kids to have a ton of fun. After the kids got comfortable in the party room, they went out and climbed on top of the big boulders. All-around it was a perfect birthday party. Highly recommended for the 4-10 year old crowd.

I’ve never been to a better gym than north mass . I moved to Colorado recently and no gym comes close to this atmosphere . Fun engaging problems for all levels of climbers , a spotless gym , great for a coffee date or work outing , grab a beer after climbing or just hangout and watch tv . They have gym equipment , a studio room for more dynamic movements , an outdoor area , a cafe and of course , an AMAZING bouldering area . 10/10 everyone should attend .

This place has everything one might need to work, sweat, and laugh. From free weights, classes of all kinds, cardio machines, to of course a massive bouldering gym. This place will give you a workout for sure. After your are finished, head up to the Top Out Cafe for some yummy food and beers. Not to mention, they now have their own North Mass Bouldering beer. If you are looking for a place to take your kids, they have a kid play room too. If your children are over 10 years old, they might not like the kids room for them being too big. Be sure to check out their court yard on warmer days as they do different events. Lastly, I was able to attend a bouldering competition and those climbers are amazing! Highly recommended throughout!
Update: I returned a few months later and decided to try some sticky chicken wings and a nitro cold brew from the Top Out Cafe inside North Mass Bouldering. The wings were huge and very delicious. The nitro brew was full flavored and just the right amount of perk! I stopped to watch the design team rework some of the routes on the main climbing floor. It was like watching art in action. This place is truly unique.
