People have to know that the facility is over 50 years old. I know the place needs total upgrades. Where I live, the new Y in Hammond is great and more accessible. U S 41 by the Shererville Y has become a real pain to get to.

One of the nastiest YMCA in the country. The carpets stink of mold and mildew. The doors are literally decomposing. The epoxy has more holes and cracks it might as well be concrete. Completely unsanitary condition that men have had to put up with since the YMCA has taken over this facility. The steam room is broken 180 days out of the year. The hot tub looks like a bacterial growth experiment. The face that they are doing remodeling to areas of the gym that have already been remodeled by neglecting the guys locker room which has looked the same since OMNI. Despicable leadership

I joined about three months ago, and the renovations look really promising. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out. The place has good energy and a lot of potential.
That said, a few small things could use more attention. The lockers could be cleaner, I’ve wiped down a few myself, and the keyed lockers are pretty small, so I still use the bigger ones. Found some dust, gum wrappers, and a couple broken hinges here and there.
Nothing crazy, just hoping once the remodel’s done, everyone, staff and members, helps keep it in good shape. This place could easily be one of the best gyms around.

I used to work at the YMCA on North Ave in Chicago and I can tell you, this Schererville YMCA is in a league of it's own. It is massive, clean, and has competent staff in all facilities (which is unheard of). They have a children's daycare center where kids can play while parents go take a class or hit the gym. My children love it there and now have their own little friend group. The lockers are big and have digit combination locks so you don't need to bring your own lock. Each locker room has a jacuzzi, steam room, showers, and sauna. The gym is simply the best I've been to, it has a separate elevated floor for cardio, a separate space for floor exercised with Jacob's ladders, and plenty of weights for everyone.
They're also expanding which I can't wait to see!
My kids also do the swim classes here which I would recommend for beginners. My kids are 4 & 5 and they're slowly becoming more comfortable and confident in the water.

Refreshing work out at least 3 times weekly. They need more updated equipment, lower floor has 2 exercise bikes, constantly a wait time. The sauna in ladies gym the water was kinda questionable one day, as though dingy & dirty. Staff friendly when checking in and friendly & helpful on lower main floor.

This is, hands down, the best YMCA I’ve ever been to AND they are expanding. Their weight room is MASSIVE, lockers are a little outdated but all you need is a place to change so not a huge deal, and the classes are filled. They will definitely need the space. Make sure and show up EARLY for the classes since you can literally get lose out on the class if it’s packed. The Y won’t kick you out or anything there just won’t be enough space. But great place for the family!

I’ve been taking classes and going to different gyms, large, boutique, personal training, etc for more than 25 years. By far, the Y has been my favorite. The YMCA is a secret gem. I get the same level of service, classes, and cleanliness as the big “Fancy” locations.

I love this location: extremely clean and organized. Well management! Please this facility management train Hammond YMCA staffs to show them how to actually manage their staffs. In Hammond YMCA, i didn’t usually see staffs clean ( except couples older Generalmen actually working), you can see ladies just have white towels walking around acting they are cleaning.
Schereville Location: CLEAN FLOOR, CLEAN LOCkER ROOM, CLEAN PARKING LOT, HARD WORKING STAFFS, WELL MANAGED.
Hammond location: DIRTY FLOOR, DIRTY LOCKER ROOM, DIRTY PARKING LOT, DIRTY MACHINE. MOST doesn’t work! MESSY MANAGEMENT ( SHOULD FIRED and HAVE NEW TEAM)

The basketball gym floors are always dirty and slippery. It’s unplayable. I haven’t been going anymore because it has been so bad. They need to clean the gym floors more frequently or deep clean it because more people are going to get injured. I’ve already seen injuries from the dusty gym floors being so slippery. If you try to run and then abruptly stop you will literally slide 6-12 inches across the floor every time. It’s ridiculous.

Overall I wish I could give this location 5 stars but if I’m being a honest paying customer there are a few things that can be updated/improved. For example the shower heads in the Women’s locker room.. Some have little to no pressure which can be frustrating especially when you want to take a quick shower after a workout. Also I am always being locked out of my locker due to it needing to be reset. On a better note tho, the cleaning staff in the Women’s locker room is always on it! Also the classes are super fun however they can get way too crowded at times, even when you book a spot it still feels impossible to get in. Also, I feel that the first floor can be cleaner.. like mirrors and floors. With so much traffic it is nice to have a clean space & proper equipment where it belongs. Otherwise I love this place & if you go during a non peek hour you will have an amazing workout.

Not autism friendly or equipt to take care of special needs kids. Assuming because of my skin color that I speak Spanish.
I always take both my kids to the hammond location and NEVER had a problem like this.
Took my son here for the first time and got a call while working out that i needed to get my son. (And yes before I dropped him off I told them he had autism and a little about him so they know what hes like. Likes to do his own thing on his own.) They called and told me he scratched a kid. My kid stopped scratching a while ago. And he only gets defensive when other kids invade his space or if he's playing with something he really wants (still no scratching when he gets defensive like this). But then it's the people who take care of him job to redirect him to something else. When I picked him up I apologized and was confused why he scratched but by seeing on how they interacted with him trying to get him to leave the play room I can tell they did not know what they were doing. Then apparently because of my skin color the older lady started talking to me in spanish reprimanding me about it's not right that his nails aren't cut and basically insinuating that I'm a bad mother. But I told her my son hasn't scratched in a long time so cutting his nails regularly was not a priority. Plus my son does not like to get his nails cut and I would have to physically hold his whole body down while he screams in terror. And I don't want that for him but again he hasn't scratched in a year and he's with kids all the time. But to this lady she could care less. I didn't like being assumed that I knew how to speak Spanish and honestly she broke hipaa by telling me who my son scratched by trying to make me feel bad. I already apologized when I walked in. I didn't need a whole story or be reprimanded. They continued to complain about my daughter too even though she didn't do anything crazy. I struggled to get them both out since obviously the kid zone environment was bad and the nice lady in the front desk who helps check people in carried my daughter and I carried my son to the car. I proceeded to cry and explain everything to her and how overwhelming it was to try to do something for myself for once and I just get this kind of treatment. She apologized, understood me, comforted me, and told me to come back. That I shouldn't give up on trying to do things for myself. My car has a dash cam and caught that whole interaction so I thank her for keeping me from crying all the way home. Went back one more time with just my daughter and of course no problems since my autism son was not there. I would put a one star but the front desk lady was the only good thing about this experience.

The Schererville Indiana YMCA has completely transformed into an outstanding, state-of-the-art facility. The level of cleanliness and organization is truly impressive, making it a pleasure to visit every time. The new layout is a game changer—gone is the outdated, drab atmosphere; instead, you’re greeted by a vibrant, modern space that feels energetic and inviting. It no longer resembles a retirement center (and I say that as someone who’s no spring chicken!). Compared to the Omni, which was a complete eyesore with its worn-out machines, this new YMCA is a night-and-day difference. Most of the equipment is brand new, cutting-edge, and meticulously maintained. Plus, the increased presence of attentive staff ensures that every part of the facility is well-cared for. It’s a massive improvement in every way, and it’s clear that they’ve raised the bar for fitness centers in the area.

My wife went to sign my 6yr old daughter up for swim classes. Todd at the front desk was very rude to my wife, as if he did not want her or any Hammond resident to utilize services at this location. He asked unnecessary questions and tried all he could to steer her away from attending this location although she wanted to get a membership with this location that cost MORE than other locations. Todd made my wife feel unwanted, as an African American Hammond resident. It's sad that Todd is trying to steer away people who want to spend their honest hard earned money with this location.

Better to go as early as possible otherwise it is extremely busy and crowded. The pools are warm. There is a good selection of activities and classes. Some equipment is worn and I regularly see garbage like wrappers and bottles that have sat for days without being picked up.
Edited review on 3/6/24: I generally come to the Schererville Y early in the morning on Sun, Mon, and Tues mornings but I decided to come tonight on a Wednesday night. If this would have been my first visit, I would absolutely not return. I am 39 years old and was by far the oldest person in the room. I have never seen so many teenagers in one setting. Their age is not the issue. It's they all linger around and chat instead of working out, stay on the machines for 20 minutes not actually using it. Forget about being able to get any dumbbells that are 10 and 15 pounds. Every single one was in use. There was a ton of garbage everywhere. Drink bottles knocked over and liquid everywhere. Nothing re-racked correctly. Equipment laying around all over. No bags allowed on the floor is the rule but there are bags everywhere. The towel bins where totally overflowed. I would give a lower rating but there are classes I enjoy and when I come early in the morning, it's a lot quieter... except on the days where school is canceled. This might as well be a daycare for 16 year olds. I will never come back on an evening like this again.
Editing once again on at 7:51am May 26th - again, garbage around the walking track(see pics). You'd think with as many members who pay a lot of money to come here, that the staff would be making more rounds to clean this place up. I guess it doesn't matter if you come AM or PM, there is trash all over.

Also understaffed when it comes to cleanliness in the locker rooms (people they have are doing a great job, they are just overwhelmed).
Also if you want to cancel, you are stuck paying an extra month due to the cancelation policy of 30 days' notice. Would be ok if you can get a workout in during those 30 days, but good luck waiting in line for every machine in the gym.

I began membership with the Omni and then it was converted over to the YMCA. Since then it has been a very stressful experience. The gym is always full of unsupervised children. The majority of the workout equipment is broken. My husband loved the boxing equipment and steel weights, all which have been removed gradually since the YMCA merger. The equipment that is operable is usually taken with items (not a person) and when reported to staff, there is nothing done because they are unsure of who the items belong to. You’re truly not able to come in and work out and leave anymore, there is always an issue. When reported to management, all we get is excuses no resolution. After months of this my husband requested to cancel our membership. Now we’re being told that we have to pay for future months before the cancellation is completed. I do not suggest this facility to anyone. Find a place where you are able to use it’s services peacefully.

I was already on the verge of canceling my membership within a month. The constant crowd and the filthy men's locker room bathrooms were off putting. The frustration peaked this morning when, in a rush to work out, so I can start my work day. Staff insisted on a profile picture. Which I get, it’s part of their job! Moving to a different desk added annoyance, and the staff's questions about the scanner and IDs felt like an unnecessary interrogation. The overall customer service made the gym unwelcoming, confirming my decision not to return.

Overall the gym isn’t bad. What is bad, is the attitudes of the older man and women in the front on this day today 12/20. Completely disrespectful and lack any form of customer service. All because we didn’t have a picture on file when we scanned. They kept moving us from computer to computer and from the front to the back, demanding we “go there” “go here.”
Some people have to work and have limited time to be at the gym let alone wait for them to get it together to take a simple picture. Pictures became a whole interrogation as if it isn’t us who’s paying monthly for my membership. He asked where did we sign up like he doesn’t have a whole system right in front of him. We were asked for ID’s and when we said we didn’t bring them in with us, the older man would shake his head.
Very uninviting, uncomfortable and rude. We’ll look for better gym options

They randomly started charging me more money and didn't give a reason why, the gym is always dirty, the machines are always broken and they take months to fix them, the employees have harass customers every day that I've been there. The bathrooms are disgusting and the management is even more disgusting. Most treadmills never work and the ones that do are missing pieces or cupholders. This place is insanley crowded at all hours of the day. Don't spend your money here it isn't worth it.

Clean, modern equipment, decent pools with life guards and separate family area for young kids. Great location.

The reception boys were helpful and friendly when I first went. Joel, Sami, and another boy whose name started with a J. They signed me up quickly and listed off amenities. I go to bathe on the steam room and work out upstairs (cardio machines). Everything is so very clean and maintenanced (especially women's locker room. ) There are events going on often for all ages. The sense of community is strong here as well.
I basically live here now.

I brought all my family to Shererville YMCA when the schedule shows “family swimming” on app. However, there were swimming classes on the family swimming area. The front desk officer doesn’t even know there is a swim class. So, I wasted about 1hour for nothing. Thanks for ur worse communication and inaccurate information.

I was discouraged when I heard it was switched from Omni to YMCA solely because I felt like it was going to get more crowded. I ended up going for a tour early in the day and even then the gym seemed pretty full. I was truly disappointed to see they got rid of the Women’s area and that now there are actually hours for the pool, which I find somewhat ridiculous when you’re paying for a membership and people work different hours. They say it’s because there needs to be a lifeguard on duty at all times but I don’t recall Omni ever having lifeguards so…
When it switched over from Omni to YMCA, I made sure we had a membership so my sons could sign up for the classes like swimming and Little Ninjas that this facility offers. There are so few options for classes, then the ones that they claim are open on the website end up having a waitlist when you select it. I am so frustrated with paying $60 a month and my children can’t do anything at this facility. I don’t see the point of keeping a membership at this point because I would have to drive a half hour to go to one of the other YMCAs just for my sons to attend classes.
And as you can see, many other reviewers are saying the same things about it being crowded, equipment is broken, the new pool hours, and the fact they got rid of the women’s area, so I might be looking into another workout facility. They need to bring Omni back.

My wife and I had an issue with our kids at the summer camp this year(2023) that appeared to be very disheartening. We reached out to the "Y" about it and although they were a bit slower than we preferred, we are especially pleased with the sensible and reasonable response that was provided. Sarah showed up with her game face on and resolved the issue of concern! It is because of this that we've decided to maintain our relationship with the YMCA altogether. She has a strong desire to do what is right and necessary

Disorganization and broken equipment. I’ve asked the front desk several times and even filled out a complaint form to fix the broken rowing machines that they have. Nothing has happened. They just raised membership prices yet you don’t see any new/fixed equipment, more lockers, or a stronger WiFi so you can actually listen to music.

I miss when it was owned by Omni. It had an area for each type of work out group. The juice heads, the shy workout, women’s area, beginners, experienced. It was a place for anyone.
Now all you see is the juice heads taking up room sitting on machines. Taking selfies, tik toks, editing their play list while taking up a machine when someone else can get on.
They have one court open and a long line to join a game of pickle ball or basketball.
And since it’s a YMCA now, it’s no reason why a teen who wants to play basketball or a sport with a YMCA member & just pay a non member fee like $10.00 to play.
Bring back teen night to give the youth something to participate in and stay active. Not every teen has the ability for their parent to get a membership at the YMCA. It maybe easier for them to pay an entry fee. We have a membership & my son had a friend with and he couldn’t come play ball with him, he couldn’t even pay a entry fee like most recs, sports plex, gyms in the area.

Honestly a pretty nice gym. It's either always super packed or empty. Always a nice place to workout every muscle with the variety of equipment offered there.

When we visited, BOTH pools were being used for classes! No lap lanes scheduled. The building was clean, but basically set up just like the old Omni 41. Pretty crowded at every turn, but worth the monthly fee if you're looking for somewhere to workout.

A variety of classes with incredible instructors and a pool. Of course there is workout equipment. Very family friendly offering programs for the little ones as well as older kids.
It’s a neighborhood gem. And gets very busy in the after-work hours and in the morning on weekends.

I really like this place. People are all really friendly and it’s been clean every time I have went. What I DID NOT like was that my toddler and I went to check out the room she would be playing in while I exercised and the woman manning the desk (and in charge of watching my daughter) did not speak any English - at all. She smiled a lot and shook her head but didn’t understand anything I asked?!! This is not ok. AT ALL. There were two women there, one younger and one older but still they both seemed to not know their job and the older one kept looking at the younger to translate and help. I respect people who know more than one language, as that’s one more than I know but you HAVE TO hire people who can understand AND communicate properly especially when little ones are their main responsibility!!! I was so turned off by this I left and am hesitant to return.

It is way overcrowded now since going from Omni to Y. Teens take up equipment, standing around chatting and looking at themselves in the mirrors. I will be looking for another gym.

I’m giving one star because I don’t have the option to give 0 stars. This facility is the maximum expression of racism, even when they look at you make you feel uncomfortable. I don’t recommend this place at all.
