A great amount of classes focusing on all age groups.
Staff are all super helpful and cheerful!

Could use some more trainors. I haven't been able to get one for at least a month.

If you're like me you haven't worked out for a long time, it's a good place to go you go as long as you want just do it slow maybe do three times a week I'm thinking it's a good thing for me I'm 67 and I need to get into decent shape just to be able to keep my balance and to have strength to be able to stay on my feet and and make my life a little more better LOL

Member for several years, unfortunately I found that the shortened hours do not work well with my schedule; especially on the weekends when I need to work out the most. Had to move to a more accommodating schedule (especially sundays, 9am-4pm is definitely not adequate).

Really tired of this gym disappointing in services and being lazy in supporting their patrons. All the TV's in the exercise bike/treadmill room are currently blank and don't display anything except a blank screen, and has been like this for several days. This is unacceptable, as this is one of the main reasons I joined this gym. I could have gone to others if I didn't want something to view while running for long periods of time, but to have this gym not consider the impact this has on their patrons is unacceptable. I've been told by staff that this is due to a conflict the gym is having with mediacom... so what?!? It's not like your gym doesn't already make enough money to afford this, but even if you didn't want to pay mediacom, then go with a different provider or steam directly to the TV's with a different platform such as youtube, or just put on the TV what's broadcast on antenna. It doesn't take a genius to figure this stuff out so you don't negatively impact your patrons. There are several options you should be doing right now to address this, which are not just having a blank screen on the TV'S in the gym where I know I personally pay your gym enough in one year to afford a TV subscription for the whole facility.

In addition to this, in the past when the TV's have been working, the woman at the front desk in glasses with short hair (who is very rude and not nice) has stated that the gym doesn't ever change the channels on the TV's and only sets them at 4 channels. This is ridiculous! There is absolutely no reason you're not turning the channel on one TV to tune in for Iowa or Iowa State games, NFL games, etc. where the patrons of your gym want to view these events without being hassled by the gym staff that are either too lazy to bother or just have schadenfreude and just revel in holding power over others and making their life miserable. All viewer ratings show that sports events for the last 100 years have been the most watched programming on television, so why the heck would you not just try and make the majority of your patrons happy?!? There is absolutely no accountability for this gym and NO ONE at this gym cares about the patrons that attend. This is even more evident by their lack to even clear off sidewalks that are covered by snow and ice, but rather do a lackadaisical job and only clear half of a sidewalk. They don't clean the machines, there's mud on elliptical machines for days on end. This facility is just really poorly run and I can't abide this any longer, I pay too much money for this. You need to address these items asap or I am going forward and filing further complaints, including government agencies, both municipal and state level, as well as business level. I do want to give credit where it's deserving, and the staff, other than the short haired woman with glasses, are quite friendly. There's usually towels available for cleaning and such, and overall it's pretty good in that aspect. I just don't like that you make your patrons suffer in the other ways previously mentioned.

Facilty is good for a family rec center. Weight room is dated with some machines needing replaced/repaired but large enough to allow a decent flow. Pool doesn't have a vacuum so there is tons of grit and dirt at the bottom. Gyms are good. Youth sports programs are poorly run which is why so many other leagues are popping up.

Absolutely worst customer service I’ve had at a gym. I recently visited this gym to proctor my daughter’s Air Force ROTC pt test. I am not a member and was told everyone that enters the facility has to pay even if they aren’t using the facility. I explained to two different employees what I was there for. I was told that this is facility is a business as the employee was snarkily smiling like I didn’t know that. I understand why why this business struggles and I see a lot of former members at other gyms in NE Polk County. Save your money and go elsewhere that supports their communities. The employee then tried to tell me the family members that attend to watch their kids play in leagues on the weekend don’t have to pay because it’s included in their registration.

Altoona Campus is a decent facility. Its pool is nice and divided up for folks who would like to swim laps or just wait in the pool. A con is that it is hot, humid, and stuffy in the pool area. Also, you can see rust on the ceiling rafters; not a good thing. The pool staff is nice but half the time they are sitting or standing together, and are staring at their phones. This needs to be addressed because in an emergency seconds are precious. The hot tub looks outdated but does a great job!

The basketball courts (2 separate spaces) are very nice but messy because a lot of the kids leave the basketballs on the floor and do not put them back in the basketball bin. It would be nice if there were some racks on the sides of the courts to not have all these basketballs on the floor. Also, the basketballs Altoona Campus provides are a mix of basketballs which are in bad shape to in ok shape. They should be replaced with more durable and reliable basketballs.

The track is a nice size but kids of certain ages are not allowed even if accompanied by an adult. This policy needs to be changed. Same goes for the hot tub age policy.

The weight room and exercise room are a nice size with plenty of space. The racquetball courts need to go though as I have never seen anyone use them or play in there. Maybe if they convert them to pickleball courts more folks would use the space. If the racquetball courts weren't there, they could expand the weight room or put more exercise equipment in there.

Lastly, the family locker rooms are great but always full. These need to be expanded as more families need these locker room spaces.

Got charged 10 dollars for a day pass then on top of that 15 dollars for being a month too young for the weight room (15 years) so I ended up spending about 2/3 of what a membership cost to just get in the weight room to work out. I recommend the YMCA over this place any day!

Price for drop in guests was reasonable. Staff was friendly. Pool was so dirty and over chlorinated. We swam and found so much hair it would stick to us. Clumps of sand at the bottom. Random stuff just floating in the water… We swim regularly in pools and haven’t been in this gross of a pool. An hour after our swim we noticed almost everyone who swam had major skin irritation/redness from the pool. Yuck!

It’s a great place with many different programs/classes. It also has a large weight room, lots of exercise equipment, two racquetball courts and an indoor pool. The only reason I didn’t give it a 5 star rating is since the pandemic, closing hours have been shortened a little.

Facility is old and in a bad shape. It feels dirty, old, musty and smelly inside. Restrooms were not cared for and smells horrible especially in family restroom.

Employees walking around but none are cleaning the equipment. There were employees in the booth by the weigh room and the booth by the treadmills. Had their faces buried in their phone for at least 30 mins. They need to spend money on routine maintenance and upkeeps instead of paying their 90 yr old director $100k a year to walk around sipping coffee from his mug. Some of the staff are friendly, majority are arrogant and snobby. The membership director (Paul) was friendly and courteous. He treated customers with courtesy and respect.

Overall, for a premium price for family membership ($980/yr) and the facility does not meet the standards and expectations.I do not recommend this facility. The office by the weigh room displayed a desicrated American flag. So disrespectful to the active duty troops, veterans, and the country.

Just returned to this facility after a lengthy hiatus. I am disappointed they are still proudly displaying a desicrated American flag in the office by with weight room. The weigh room still dirty and unkept. Just noticed, they finally changed the carpet in the racquet ball area.

High price for substandard and old facility. Employees and staff were rude and disrespectful. They gossiped about other customers and have no regard for privacy. Restrooms and pool area are nasty. They washed the floor surrounding the pool area into the pool...that's gross. Debris in the weigh room and the kids workout area. The TV and games do not work. Workout equipment are dirty. I'm surprised there are not more bad reviews.

4/18/2022
Just witnessed one of the female trainer screaming out loud "BOYS!!" at a group of young men in the weigh room. So loud the entire weigh room went silent. These are young men..not boys. That was uncalled for, very disturbing , and disrespectful. Treat them with respect and courtesy ..these are young men working out..not little boys. As a representative of the facility and trainer, she hould have walked over and quietly speak to those young men.

If I could give this gym 0 stars I would. I really wanted to try a kickboxing class here.I called earlier in the day to see what time the daycare was open until, they told me 8. I thought that was a little late so I asked if they were sure and they assured me it was and I’d be totally fine to come in. Later that day I walk into the gym to tell them I wanted to participate in the kickboxing class I called about and I would be having my son go to the daycare for an hour while I go. The lady rolled her eyes and said it was only open until 7:30. I was a little frustrated because i drove 30 minutes to come to this class. I asked why they had told me 8, then changed to 7:30, the lady got upset and asked 2 other employees to come over and asked the women if they’ve ever heard of the daycare being open until 8, they replied no then looked at each other like I was crazy. I asked them if it was possible for my son to sit in the class and all of them continued to look at each other in confusion. By that time It was obvious that i was not able to go to this class. They treated me as if I was an inconvenience and quite frankly and idiot.

You pay for your kids to have membership but there is very little they can do to exercise, unless you pay extra. Even while supervised, They aren’t allowed in the weight room, cardio room, elevated track. The pool almost always has lessons or classes going on so you can’t take them swimming. One time my son and his friend were the ONLY people in the pool and they actually had the audacity to kick my son and his friend out of the lap lanes. They have kids equipment but it’s located in an open area that I have to sit and watch my kid workout but we can’t work out together. Kids gyms are typically filled with older kids that are playing basketball so my 6 year old son can’t run there without getting run over or tripping on loose basketballs.

The kids youth room hours are totally geared towards stay at home mommy hours. Which is silly because the working folks actually can’t adjust their schedules to go to the gym when they want. They could probably have better weekend hours for the youth room if maximizing how much money they get from you wasn’t their primary concern (have to make money on parties on the weekend so close down the youth room for paying members, same with all the extra pay activities, no room for members when those activities are going on)

I agree with others comments that the staff are a bit rude. Some very nice ladies work there but the rest barely acknowledge you when you walk in or when you leave. To busy gossiping or doing nothing.

If you don’t have kids and just want to stay in the weight room and cardio area, you’ll probably be just fine here, except you’ll pay substantially more (which will increase more each year) than memberships at better facilities with upgraded equipment.

If you are looking for a place for a workout at any age, consider Altoona Campus. It literally has it all: free weights, weight machines, tread mills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, steppers, rowing machines, pool, gym, walking track and handball/paddle ball courts.

Some folks might be a bit intimidated by the workout prospects and being surrounded by people who are all different shapes and sizes and at different fitness levels. But no one is doing any comparing or judging when everyone is there for a common purpose: to get healthier. Remember that the hardest exercise you will ever do is getting off the couch.

Staff is quite friendly and helpful with ready advice and instructions for any of the equipment. The Campus also has an extensive range of fitness classes for a variety of fitness levels. There is even a nursery and daycare for parents who want to get in a workout but have no place for the kiddos.

Cost of attendance and membership varies by age and family size.

Time of day often determines how busy it gets. Guests may have to experiment with different times to find a time slot that is comfortable.

One more point: check with your doctor before beginning any program and if it hurts-- stop.

The facility, including the pool, weights, machines, and locker rooms are all in very good condition. I love working out here. The front desk people are very unfriendly though, to the point I wonder what it is I did to them. I've been a member at many YMCAs and family gyms in the past and this is a first.

Overpriced. Employees with no integrity. They told me I was "locked" into a price when I signed up for membership. My rates soon increased and I had to "fight" Bruce AND Beth for a refund. My family is into fitness, and they clearly are not. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FACILITY!
