THIS REVIEW IS FOR THIER KIDS PROGRAM!!!
BLUF: We have been to about 5-6 BJJ gyms north of KC… had to drive 40 minutes to find this gem… and it’s worth it!
I HIGHLY Recommend.
KCBJJ offers BJJ for kids 3 days a week: Tues and Thursday at 6PM. Then Saturday 9:30-10:30 no gi.
Pro:
1. Jason Bircher is the BB who leads class and is fantastic with kids. He commands respect from all ages.
2. He has about 7 instructors for about 25-30+ kids. Plenty of eyes for safety.
3. Jason teaches Tues and Thurs class. Saturday he has a Brown belt teaching. Meaning you get top notch instruction (often 1-1 if they see kids are struggling) for the kids!
4. The location has plenty of room for training and rolling!
5. The kids do about 20 minutes of rolling a night and often class goes a bit over!
6. Class is officially an hour, but after a month of coming here, I have yet to see class end in an hour. More like 1 hour and 20 minutes!
7. Culture is unmatched… kids who get to class early start rolling and practicing on their own. No adults tell them to start practicing. I’ve only seen this at one other BJJ gym… in GA!
8. Rank and belts are earned. Stripes are not given for attendance but for effort. Most kids are white belts… but don’t let that fool your kid! These are the meanest white belts in KC!
9. This is the biggest kids program I have seen in 5 different BJJ gyms (at least bigger than any kids BJJ program in northern KC)

Home away from home! I came to visit my family from California and had the privilege to train at KCBJJ. I got ahold of Jason ahead of time to inquire about training. He communicated right away and welcomed me into the gym. My first day at the gym I felt welcomed by the entire community. The class was excellent and great instruction by Jason. The class is set up with plenty of time to drill and roll. I got to roll with Jason who made me feel very welcome there and offered good feedback. He has created a very safe and welcoming environment. So much so I invited my KC friends to join me. I trained three times while I was in town and will be back next time I visit. For the record, before I left California I asked my coach which gym in Kansas City I should visit. I showed him the gyms I had found ahead of time and hands down my coach recommended KCBJJ based on the culture and environment of the gym's website. I felt totally welcomed and at home here. Excellent faculty and instructors. Each student at the gym was welcoming and fun to train with. This is the place for BJJ in KC!

Was looking for a place to drop in while visiting town. I reached out to several of the highly reviewed gyms around KC and Jason was the only one to get back to me. I'm glad he did. The mats were clean and his students were welcoming. I'll certainly be back next time I'm in the area.

Finally after a year of this, I'm starting to see my son win matches. I don't think he's very into it yet, but it's so close to our house and exercise he needs right now. Fingers crossed he keeps it up. When I'm finished nursing an injury, I might even have the guts to take adult beginner classes. It's on my bucket list.

I was in town for the weekend & stopped by for 2 classes. The gym was great, clean, and full of awesome people. It was an awesome experience and Jason (the instructor) was awesome. The instruction was top tier & it is very organized. Great vibes. They didn't charge me for class either. 10/10 would recommend.

In town for the week and dropped in to train here while in town. Jason was very welcoming and so was everyone at the gym! Made me feel right at home on day 1. You can tell it's a good culture here with everyone looking out for each other.

Learned a few things due to great instruction from both Jason and Carlos. They break down techniques in a way that makes sense - paying attention to each detail. Got some tough rolls in also. I'll be back when in town again. Highly recommend to anyone.

I coached a youth judo program that went along with the youth jujitsu program for quite a few years here before moving out of town. Without a doubt the very best club I've been a part of. Owner/Instructor Jason Bircher is the best youth coach in the city. By far. We worked with kids of all ages, skill sets and personality types, ensuring an amazing experience for all youth. The overall goal being to teach the kids about a great sport, and instilling confidence in them where other facets may have failed. My best times coaching will always be at this place. This club will always be home, and I recommend anyone new to the sport to check it out, I promise a great experience!

One of the more established gyms in the area but I would recommend staying away from this one. Instruction is ok but Jason doesn't really spend much time developing his students and everyone mainly learns from each other. Gym also feels very dirty compared to some other local options.

There is also lots of drama with said instructor and female students that impacts the entire culture of the gym. I would check out Glory, Warriors, or Gracie Barra before attending this school.

Professor Jason is running the most amazing academy hands down! The classes here are huge, filled with beasts! I cannot recommend it enough. Whether you’re brand new, or a high ranked practitioner, you will love this place. Not too many places have this many black belts on the mat. I think this helps control the tempo too. Nobody is trying to kill each other or spaz out- it’s just a place to grow and learn. I cannot recommend this academy enough! Drop in and see for yourself, and prepare to be treated like family the moment you step on the mat :)

I have owned 2 gyms and trained at many others and I can honestly say that Jason is the best instructor and this team is one of the best groups I’ve had the privilege of training with. I came into this gym with over 10 years of experience but my Jiu Jitsu technique and competition strategy improved more in 10 months than it had in over 10 years. I recommend KCBJJ to people of all ages and experience levels and can promise you will gain a great amount of knowledge training with this team.

I dropped in to watch a beginner GI class. I figured it would be what I was most interested in doing first. As they warmed up Jason, the owner and lead instructor. Stopped, and introduced himself. He asked if I was just there to see what they get up too. I said yes. He told me if I had any questions just ask. I watched the class, and overheard several students asking one another about limits and injuries so as to keep from hurting one another. The amount of respect and intensity was definitely good to see. Being completely new to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I had many questions for Jason after the class. He took the time to explain half a dozen or more things to me while his next class was arriving. I never felt as though I was keeping him from his next class or that any of my questions were silly. Even if I never take a class here, this is the atmosphere I want when I do decide to take a class like this. Thank you Jason.

I stopped in here to roll while traveling for work. I was welcomed with the exact vibe I hoped to encounter - a friendly team looking to get after it. Had some solid rolls and the head instructor pulled me aside to ask if I was new. I told him I was in town for work and he said β€œjust trying to shake off the plane ride with a roll?” It told him yes and he waived the day fee because he could see I needed it. That’s what it’s all about. Definitely check this place out if you’re in the KC area.

Great grapplers, good instruction.

Changing room has zero privacy so if that concerns you come already in the Gi.
No showers at the location either.
Mats aren't always super clean and I watched a few guys go into the restroom without shoes on then get back on the mats. Which is gross considering the likelihood of someone getting their face smashed in the excact place they just tracked piss from the restroom floor.

No AC either so make sure you are well hydrated prior to a class and bring water with you, especially throughout summer.

Often starts rolls from knees. Not sure why, the had plenty of space.
Seems to use sub only rules, but still have safe application of subs like heelhooks and positions like knee reaping. Which demonstrates a solid understanding of those positions throughout the gym.

Only had a distasteful experience rolling with one guy, but he might have just been having a bad day.

Not much understanding of IBJJF rules. Not that it matters much, more of something to be aware of. If you plan to train here and compete IBJJF, you should probably invest in a official rules course.

As a traveling white belt I worry about finding a quality, safe and welcoming place to train. KCBJJ met and exceeded my expectations. I vastly improved my passing, bottom escapes, and open guard submissions in particular. My wife and I both felt safe training. For women they do have some women only classes, check the website and FaceBook group. People were fun and occasionally even funny. πŸ˜‰ A great place to visit and train long term. Great job Jason! Oh and competitors watch out if you see a KCBJJ patch, it’ll be a tough roll.

I was visiting Kansas City and trained with Jason and his crew at KCBJJ all week. They were very welcoming and generous, and good jiu-jitsu players! I've trained at around 50 BJJ and MMA gyms ranging from rural Virginia to downtown Honolulu, the instruction, experience, and work ethic at KCBJJ are amazing.

NEW PEOPLE - If your new and thinking about it, stop thinking and GO IMMEDIATELY - don't think again about training until you've gone 10 times - it will change your life and you'll have a leg up being at an elite academy in KCBJJ.

Already Training for any amount of time? You'll find Jason and his crew will welcome you with open arms with some drilling warm ups, a beautiful technique demonstration, followed by tough and respectful rolls. Whenever i go to a new gym i make sure 1 - i contact the gym before a few days before i arrive, and 2 - i tap early and often when i'm caught (don't be a hero at a new school - it never goes well).

Check out KCBJJ - they won't let me give them 24 stars.

Jason Bircher is the best Blackbelt coach in the Midwest and he's even a better friend. I met a couple years ago and he helps me really not only understand but appreciate the sport of Brazillian Jiujitsu and he really wants people to learn. 5 star facility with a 5 star coach and there is also a great family of people who all push each other from white belts all the way to Black and upper belts will happily roll with lower belts because this caring attitude is universal among all who train there.

I started training KCBJJ while in school at Fort Leavenworth. I cant say enough about Jason Bircher and his team. Its a small school but it creates world champions at every belt level (white through brown), and Jason competes and wins as well. He took double golds at the Chicago Open. Its a Renato Tavares associate and Renato does special seminars through out the year. You can train every day between classes and constant open mats for a cheap fee. It sucks that I am only here for one year, I love the school and the team. I expected a "new guy beat down" when I got there as a blue belt from another school, but everyone was super friendly and welcoming, but definitely tough. Professional fighters and casual fighters train, plus a really developing and competitive women's team, kids team, and free Judo from several great blackbelts. Jason is really a cool laid back dude, he's funny as hell but VERY technical in his jits. I have a new respect for the guillotine, they are specialists and win with it at every level, gi and no gi, mat or cage. Great school and a great team. I wish I could stay.
