If you're looking for a real gym that actually lets you lift, Bayou Barbell is the place to be. It's the biggest gym in Chalmette, packed with machines, tons of free weights, and even a dedicated boxing area. The upstairs cardio section is a great bonus, but the real highlight is being able to train without restrictions.

I used to go to a place where alarms go off if you breathe too hard, but here, you can actually push yourself without worrying about judgment or silly rules. The atmosphere is serious, but welcoming—perfect for anyone looking to make real progress. Plus, with hours from 5 AM till, it fits just about any schedule. Highly recommend! The staff is always friendly and nice.

I've been to plenty of gyms in and out of the parish and even out of state and Bayou Barbell is, without any doubt, the best gym I've been to. It is the pinnacle of what a gym should be. In one corner, you have a plethora of dumbbells that go past 120 lbs. There are plenty of benches and other stations, so that means you won't be waiting to get your workout in. For all the Johnny Bodybuilders out there, you have your clean equipment and machines that don't shake or rattle when you load the weight on, a posing room where you can show off the succulent gains, and you've got posters and TV's everywhere showing off bodybuilding legends like Arnold, Ronnie "Lightweight Baby" Coleman, and underdogs like Kevin Levrone to remind you of what you're achieving. I think I may have seen a Tom Platz poster somewhere, but, if not, there's a suggestion box for that idea. For all cardio bunnies, you have your equipment specifically for your needs and you have plenty of treadmills and elliptical machines with two stair-masters if you're looking to really destroy your body. On the second floor, there's a great expanse of turf where athletes and strongmen can deadlift tires, push sleighs, or do whatever else they need to do to maintain that heavy/lean bulk. Below, in its own room, you have a boxing room with at least five or six heavy bags, two speedbags, and two double-end bags for all aspiring Mike Tyson's to utilize.

The entire gym is remarkably clean and free of any damage. All cable extensions are in good shape too, nothing looks like it was bought off a bootleg market. Staff, like the owner, Vinny, and his sister, Tori, are extremely kind and positive people that beam a welcoming energy to everyone walking in. In just the short time I've been here, I think I've seen Vinny and Tori hold a short conversation with almost everyone. They've created a vibe that makes this gym feel like a second home for most people. They have hone an extraordinary job in transforming what was once Prestige Fitness into a open temple of iron and gains. Gym-goers range from newcomers, experts, and to muscle mass animals - all of which are very kind and welcoming people. I promise you, wherever you may fall into those three categories, you will not feel like the odd one. There is a great swirling energy in the gym that uplifts your exercise. It also helps that their music isn't pop like what you'd find in commercial gyms. The heavy rock that's playing keeps the good energy flowing.

In conclusion, Bayou Barbell is the go-to gym if you're looking to newly dive into exercise or ascend beyond your present limits. Also, the gym memberships are offered on a month-by-month basis, meaning there are no six month or year long contracts you're obliged to pay through, so you have nothing to lose by checking the place out and trying it for a month. If you do that, I guarantee you'll be staying. I know I certainly will be.

That entire staff is TOP TIER!!! Ever since I've joined that gym in January 2025 the community there is Phenomenal! its such a vibe with everyone there as well. This gym is hands down the best gym I have ever been to. Not the best gym in Chalmette, the best gym EVER -- and I have lived in 6 different states. From the workout to the people, you can't go wrong. They have endless machines and are literally getting new ones weekly. They also have boxing, spin classes, and occasionally yoga. In an era with so many different workout styles, this makes it so easy to please everyone.

The people??? Amazing people!!! The owners (Jimmy, Vinny, and Tori) make you feel like your working out at home with your family. They are very welcoming, kind, and protective. They watch out for the ladies and are constantly checking in to ensure we are comfortable and happy.

Bayou Barbell is the largest, cleanest, and most well kept gym in St Bernard Parish, and possibly the entire New Orleans area. Trust me, over the years I have been a member of quite a few different gyms, and I’ve belonged to ALL of the larger gyms in St Bernard over the last 10 years. This place has it all, and then some. Multiple benches, squat racks, more dumbbells than 20 people can use at the same time, and machines……they have the largest variety of machines, all are in working order, the padding is not ripped or torn, the cables are not broken or frayed, and everything is kept well oiled and wiped down. They are constantly getting new equipment in stock, most recently they brought a brand new plate loaded shoulder/ chest machine that works phenomenally for shoulder press and upper chest work. The staff is very kind, they always greet the members with a smile as they walk in the door (unlike other gyms that I’ve been to, where the front staff person is too busy on their cellphone to look up, or just plain aggravated and grunts at you). I find the other members here to be nice, friendly people as well. All of this helps with returning every day, they make you feel like you’re a part of their family. This place has a nice mix of males and females, and I do not notice any inappropriate behavior on either side. I definitely watch what is happening, and I do not see any of the guys inappropriately looking at, or hear them talking about any of the females. So it should not make you hesitate, because you’re a female, to come here. This place is not intimidating at all. Of course the females in the gym are there to work out, and are not bothering the guys at all. So fellas, if you think you’re not gonna get you workout in because the chicks are gonna be talking to you the whole time, think again. If you’re new to the gym, there is always a staff member available to help explain how to use the equipment appropriately, and there are areas upstairs or “off to the side” if you want to work out more privately. There’s not much more to say besides, get your lazy butt off the couch, close the refrigerator door, and go get a workout in at the best gym in St Bernard Parish. And no, I am not getting compensated for my review lol. This is a 100% honest member review.

The best gym in NOLA, pound for pound. They’re family run and always investing in the place: new machines, new amenities, and more plates than a buffet. Its big. Spacious inside so I’m not tripping over equipment or people. It’s outside the city but a quicker drive than my old gym, with no traffic, plenty of parking, no waiting, and half the price. Very great place! I stayed in Chalmette for 1 month and I used this gym for a short time but I loved this place, huge, full of equipment, boxing room and more. I felt like at home the staff was super kind. See you next year for sure

Bayou Barbell is the largest, best-equipped, and best prices of memberships in the Parish compared to the other gyms here. The owner and staff are very friendly, and professional and treat you like family. This place is super clean, has quality equipment and the owner is always doing something to improve this gym for their members. I don't see myself going to any other gym!

My happy place! Owners and staff are amazing and very helpful. They are friendly and encouraging and care about your progress and attentivet o your needs and request.. I am so glad they came back stronger after the tornado. The body master machines feel different than the other local gym. It feels heavier and packs more of a punch. Best gym hands down!
