It’s been years since I’ve done pilates and as I’ve aged I realized I needed to gain more core strength and pilates seemed like a good idea. My doctor is the one who recommended Explore Movement and Kate. Signing up for one-on-one classes has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Kate is incredibly professional and has an uncanny awareness of how our bodies move. She adjusts my session based on how I am feeling (some days my ankles or sciatic are a nightmare).
I’ve also packed on a bit of weight over the years and have never felt judged here. Kate is consistently body positive and encouraging. She makes it easy to show up even on days when I’m not feeling my best.
The equipment at Explore Movement is also some of the most comfortable, clean and adjustable equipment I’ve used. Honestly, I can’t say enough good about this place. If you are thinking of starting a pilates practice, or going back after a long absence, this is the place to go.

When I “graduated” from Physical Therapy for a spinal stenosis issue, I was lucky enough to find Kirsten, owner of Explore Movement, to continue my rehabilitation. Kirsten has been using a combination of Gyrotonics, Pilates and Postural Restoration to promote my balanced movement, increase my range of motion and improve my strength and flexibility. She also uses breath work to engage the parasympathetic nervous system to promote a stronger mind-muscle connection to reduce the likelihood of future injuries.

Although the exercises that she uses in her well-equipped facility seem very mild, the result is very powerful. I am now able to play 18 holes of golf, usually walking with a push cart, and can stand for longer periods of time without any discomfort. I have been a weekly client for nearly a year and will continue to use Explore Movement on a regular basis to insure that I can continue to enjoy an active lifestyle despite my age and unique body imbalances.

Postpartum, I injured my back, requiring physical therapy so I could function day to day. When I graduated from PT, I reached out to Kirsten to help me safely get stronger with awareness of my injury. From the very first session, Kirsten was thoughtful, adapted according to how my body was feeling that day, and helps correct me when I'm out of alignment. I find pilates really fun, and it has become a special hour every week for me. Kirsten can meet you where you are and help you build strength regardless of where you're starting from!

I wanted to try Pilates to help with lengthening my muscles, improving my balance and becoming stronger. I chose Explore Movement due to the positive reviews I had read and the convenience of its location. I wasn't sure I was going to stick with Explore Movement for the long run because I thought I might want a place that offered larger group classes, but thought it would be a great place to learn the basics. However, once I began working with Jordi, I knew I would be continuing for the long run. He is incredibly knowledgable, meets me where I am at and I always leave feeling lighter, happier, and more hopeful. I have struggled with feeling limited due to some past injuries and I appreciate Jordi listening and his ability to adapt his session plans to best meet the needs of his clients. It is the best self care for myself. I feel so grateful to have found Explore Movement (and Jordi). The studio is so clean and comfortable and they have been so accommodating to work me into the schedule at times that work for me. I cannot recommend enough!

One of the biggest blessings that I have had in my postpartum experience is meeting Kate who has to be the best pilates teachers I have come across. She is so knowledgable, she knows how to explain the movements well and she listens to my body. Post each session, I feel my body has reset which has been so crucial as I recover from pregnancy/delivery but also the toll that raising a baby takes on ones mental and physical being.

Kate is extremely warm and filled with positive energy. I have done pilates classes and 1:1 private sessions in different cities/countries, nothing comes close to the caliber and dedication of Kate’s practice.

I am so grateful I came across Explore Movement - such a well maintained, cozy environment. I look forward to my sessions every week because I know I will leave feeling better than when I left.

I started Pilates because my orthopedic surgeon recommended I try it to help with a recent back issue. So, I chose Explore Movement because of their knowledge, expertise and training, especially with people that have pain. I was also interested in their personalized approach. My sessions with Kirsten have increased my flexibility, core strength and have helped with the pain in my ribs and back and allowed me to continue with an active lifestyle. Kirsten’s sessions are personalized for how I am feeling that particular day and are always a little different and challenging. The studio is super clean, bright and private with all the latest equipment. I would highly recommend Kirsten and Explore Movement!

I heard about Explore Movement from a friend who really wanted to start going. We went to our first duo session and were BLOWN AWAY with how amazing it was. Kirsten was so knowledgeable, in tune with our bodies helping with small tweaks in movements and our bodies felt like they were on a whole other frequency leaving the studio. I was hooked. I’ve been going there every week for almost a year now and I have gotten stronger, recruited more friends because I believe in Kirsten and her program and look forward to going every week. If you’re considering trying it out, I urge you to make a leap try one session and see the difference yourself!

I had never done Pilates before when my daughter gave me a gift certificate for a private session at Explore Movement at 133 Gray Rd in Falmouth. I’M HOOKED!! I’ve been active in the gym and racket sports for years. Adding Pilates has helped me so much by activating smaller supporting muscles, increasing strength and flexibility, and correcting my longtime shoulder impingement. Working with Cate has been awesome. Her knowledge, expertise and easygoing manner gets results while having fun. Great studio, expert instructors, healthy results…I couldn’t be happier with Explore Movement. I encourage everyone to check it out!!!

I love working with Kirsten at Explore Movement! I had never used equipment for Pilates before but it really helps keep the body in the right position to do the movements without injury, which I am prone to. Also Kirsten is always making subtle adjustments to my position, which I appreciate. The studio feels very welcoming, light and airy. I truly enjoy being there. Every session is slightly different so I never get bored. I look forward to my workout at Explore Movement!

My physical therapist recommended working with Kirsten Adler at Explore Movement. As a long time dancer I have tried many different modalities over the years but gyrotonics was new to me. Working with Kristin on the gyrotonic equipment has helped me to unlock some of the patterns that my body is so used to holding after many years of dance training, teaching and performing. Kristin really knows her stuff and she's able to make the smallest little correction or adjustment that makes all the difference. I highly recommend Kristin and her practise!

Words can't do justice to how enthusiastically I recommend Kirsten and Explore Movement. I worked with Kirsten to get back to what I love (contemporary dance) after a hip surgery, and was blown away by how transformative the experience was and how perfect it was to supplement my more traditional physical therapy routine. I would walk into each session, and just by observing how I was moving and examining my alignment both standing and lying down, Kirsten could expertly "diagnose" what was in need of attention that day and then tailor my session to specifically address those areas. After each session (combined Pilates reformer + Gyrotonic) I felt 3 feet taller, more fluid in all of my joints and muscles, more relaxed and confident, and ready to MOVE more comfortably through my day. Explore Movement is amazing!

I feel so fortunate to have found Explore Movement and Kirsten. She listened to my needs and paired me with my great instructor Jordi! It all started with a strong recommendation from my Dr to try pilates for my increasing back pain. My goal was to get stronger through daily exercises at home and avoid crippling arthritis and, beyond that, being in a wheelchair! I see Jordi weekly. He has provided me with home routines that we build on and update as I become stronger. He is knowledgeable, caring, supportive, and awesome! Jordi has done research and provides specific instruction for my situation - something you cannot get online or in group classes. My Dr has seen great improvement!! Also - I love the studio - it is calming, clean, and welcoming. I feel guided in reaching my goals, safe in being who I am, and encouraged there. Many thanks to Kristen and Jordi - I am so grateful.

Explore Movement deserves the highest rating for their expertise, professionalism, careful attention and a wonderful, personalized studio atmosphere. I worked with Jordi this winter while living in Maine for work, and benefitted greatly from his depth of skills in an array of modalities that complement Pilates, such as somatic awareness and disruption of old unhelpful patterns of movement. We worked upwards towards strengthe training from that in a way that assured I was moving and strenegthing the correct areas of my body in teh correct manner and pattern. I am able to continue riding my horse without pain!= and with improved balance.

I feel incredibly lucky to have found Kirsten and Explore Movement! I started working with Kirsten regularly as part of my recovery from surgery for a herniated disc in my lower back, and now I'm hooked on Pilates. Over the last year, she has helped me to regain the strength and flexibility that I lost as a result of my injury, especially in my legs and lower back. Kirsten always pays close attention to my back, how it's feeling, and what I could benefit from at our sessions--it was really important to me to find this in a Pilates instructor. I enjoy spending time with Kirsten each week and am excited to keep getting stronger!

I started pilates after winning a free session. I was hooked after my first session. It was something I had wanted to try after years of knee pain and on going hip and lower back pain. I had done just about everything, including arthroscopic knee surgery with minimal results. Running and cycling were my outlet until my pain started. Since starting pilates, I have gained a better understanding of my body and how it moves, along with proper breathing and fluidity of movements. I have not had lower back, hip pain, or knee pain in months. I feel stronger mentally and physically than I have in years. I look forward to my sessions because Kirsten challenges me with the variety of workouts that keeps me focused and my body engaged. Pilates will be part of my lifestyle for life.

I can’t say enough good things about Kirsten. I started at Explore Movement after a pinched nerve in my neck awakened me to improving my posture and strength, but really Kirsten has changed my entire relationship with my body. She reminds me that all bodies can do marvelous things; I have never once felt self-conscious about my size in Kirsten’s studio. She’s brilliant and knowledgeable, trained in Pilates, yoga, and Gyrotonics, but more, she’s extremely positive and fun. She cheers me on through every movement - literally cheering at times - and I look forward to every session, knowing I’ll leave the Explore Movement studio feeling strong, connected, and capable of anything.

Working with Kirsten has been transformational not only in my body but also in my mind. I booked my first 12-week session with her following back surgery. In June, I was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis of the knee. Walking beyond a quarter of a mile was extremely painful. My orthopedic recommended gel injections and Pilates for improved mobility. I received a series of three gel injections and then began a 12 week Pilates series with Kirsten. By the end of the 12 weeks, I was walking comfortably for distances of 3 to 4 miles!! A bonus was improved posture, elimination of cramping in my feet and toes, and the ability to stand comfortably for extended periods of time - what a quality of life enhancement! And, Kirsten is an absolute delight.

My sessions with Kirsten were really fun and helpful! I started seeing her to rebuild strength after a knee injury took me away from working out for a while, and also to work on integrating my core and pelvic floor. My PT had recommended I work with Kirsten, and it was great. I always enjoyed visiting with her, and felt that my body was getting exactly what it needed from our sessions. Her space is great, and she is lovely!

I recently returned to strength training/lifting weights in a gym environment, and I could really feel that the work with Kirsten had set me up with a great foundation (my trainer felt the same way and really noticed the foundational and integrative work I had done!).

I originally connected with Kirsten via an auction for Maine Needs. I bid on her auction item, a session of Pilates and Gyrotonics, and lost. I reached out directly to ask if she would consider working with me and my elder parent, who has cognitive and memory issues associated with Alzheimer’s, to build core strength, increase mobility, and improve balance. Kirsten developed a warmup and cool down routine that helped build trust and confidence with my Mom. She worked with each of us, meeting us where we were, with exercises and guidance that gave each of us a productive experience. When Covid-19 cases in Maine were very high last winter she continued to support our goals, quickly adapting to provide a virtual program so the gains we’d made would not be lost. When leaving our sessions and in the days following my body felt aligned and strong. The personal, while still professional, support she provided my Mom warmed my heart. We both experienced positive physical changes and gained information about how to continue to care for ourselves beyond the sessions. I highly recommend working with Kirsten, the Portland ME area is lucky to have her.

I cannot say enough about how working with Kirsten has helped me, as a pregnant/postpartum mom but also just as a human with a body.

I spent around 3 months of my second pregnancy working with Kirsten, both in person and then virtually b/c of COVID. She helped me to feel strong, relaxed and in control during the end of my pregnancy through both types of sessions. She'd be so responsive to whatever challenges I was feeling each time we met, and the pelvic floor/breathing/glute strengthening work we did made my second birthing and recovery experience feel SO much more manageable than my first!! (...I SWEAR I almost just typed easy...) During labor, her voice was in my ear, and my body remembered the lessons she'd helped it to learn, and then I was up and about almost immediately, not fearing the toilet at all!! It made a HUGE difference. I also took postpartum classes with Kirsten, which helped me feel strong, centered and in control of my own body in those first hard weeks/months.

Aside from pregnancy, the tweaks and subtle movements she had me work on have radically shifted the way my body moves. I cannot recommend her enough... even just our first few sessions would've made such a big change in my body. But I was totally hooked; she is the BEST.

I highly recommend Kirsten. From the first in person session to our continued work on zoom she has been incredibly intuitive to what my body needs. I feel like I get a great workout as well as a healing session. After the first visit, I felt like a new person. My long time hip imbalance had finally been addressed in one session and my body felt better for days. I am a dancer and her experience as a dancer as well as her training in Gyrotonics, which I love, have been so helpful in my training. Kirsten is also a great listener. She remembers my long term goals but she also is very skillful in addressing any new issues that arise. I love the way she uses gyrotonics, pilates and yoga to balance each session. She is a very talented practitioner both in-person and virtually and I always look forward to our sessions!

Kirsten is a terrific movement teacher. In the almost two years I've been seeing her, we've worked on many things, but I mostly think of my time with her as dedicated to rewriting motor programs that aren't working. She is amazingly precise, and easily spots where a tiny centimeter adjustment somewhere can change the entire focus and effect of a movement. I always leave our sessions with a clear idea of what to practice at home, a newfound energy and I feel 2 inches taller! Highly recommend!
