Update on 10-21-25 two months after my review below. Still no AC. Still "waiting for a part" with no date of resolution in sight. I am thinking: Never!? New manager David and front desk staff are lovely but powerless in the face of corporate management who are uncaring and provide robotic answers to complaints and unacceptable responses such as no date available for AC being fixed. After three years? This is my theory: demographics of this location is many high school students that walk to the gym after school. They are young and resilient and not likely to pass out from heatstroke or worse. They also don't typically have a large disposable income for higher end gyms. So Golds Town Center has a guaranteed membership and no need to fix the AC!

No airconditioning in the Golds Rockville Town Square gym for almost three months this summer 2025 and now management says the part they ordered is not correct and they have no idea when the correct one can be found. Temperatures have been 80-90 degrees with high humidity. Heat conditions are dangerous and lack of AC also means air is not been filtered so two health concerns. The large fans brought in a month ago only circulate hot air. These conditions are dangerous for people working out and for the gym staff.

Basic amenities with all the equipment necessary for a good workout, and friendly people. The energy has gone up since David took over as manager. Minimal wait times for machines. Hot in the summer but that doesn’t get in the way of a great way to unwind after work. Can’t beat the price.

I love the staff and the new manager (David). The real problem stems from higher management and how they seem not to care about their customers, employees, or the maintenance of the gym. Chris (a higher-up) told me the A/C would be fixed months ago!!! Come to find out, as of 9/30/2025, the A/C still hasn’t been fixed.
I came from the other location that closed down. From what I’ve heard, the Rockville location just moved machines around, added new paint, and called it a renovation. It’s very upsetting to see how the owners and higher-ups don’t care about their workers or the members who pay for their memberships every month.
They care so much about finding new customers, but keeping the ones they already have happy is clearly not a top priority. You can feel the extreme heat every time you walk by the break room. They should really rethink their pricing. Charging such a high rate for a facility they clearly don’t want to or care to maintain is absolutely ridiculous.
Again, the staff is lovely, but Gold's Gym in Rockville needs to do better.

When the Gold's at Wintergreen closed, I was a man without a gym. The Wintergreen location was incredibly nice, not too crowded, and with friendly people working the front desk. My first option was to try the Gold's in Town Square - what a disaster! Dark, grungy, not enough equipment and - as everyone else has been saying - broken AC - so it's hot as hell in there. Apparently, it's been broken for years and the gym doesn't seem to care and has no immediate plans to fix it. So, I switched to Planet Fitness off of Nebel Street and Randolph Road. What a difference. The AC works, the place is clean, it's huge and has every machine imaginable. Parking is easy. The locker rooms are nice. The only thing they don't have is a specific place for stretching, but you can't have everything. The bottom line is I have a gym again - and Gold's has lost another member.

Can you fix air conditioning, it's impossible to workout. Also, fix the machines and water fountains. Too much to ask. Bathrooms are fine, even with light flickering.

They plan on not fixing the AC for most the summer, there is no real functional exercise area to warm up unless you go when there are no classes (aka don’t work normal day jobs), only a few DBs of each weight, few stair masters, only two places to do pull ups that are not very suitable for shorter people (i.e. women), staff are often not around or only scrolling on their phones, the one private bathroom doesn’t seem to lock so you’ll get walked in on, it has been inaccessible with an out of order elevator as long as I have been there, and things are split up a bit weirdly from the 1st to 2nd floor. I was forced to switch when wintergreen closed and it has been very disappointing. Someone could very well die of a cardiac event, suffer from heat stroke, or have a flare up symptoms for heat sensitive conditions like MS. I feel they owe people money back for the months of no AC. I also literally have to go to another location to have the equipment I need for a workout weekly. :( trying to think of something positive?…

UPDATE.
Heard corporate is purposefully not fixing the AC and will not do anything until someone gets truly hurt or temps get above ~>92 degrees or something. Don’t believe when they say they’re doing something about it. They don’t care about their employees or guests. After years of being a member, this location is why I will boycott them forever. Terrible management. No one should ever go here. They don’t care because they think you can’t sue them. If I could give them negative stars, I would.

Well, just like last summer "The A/C is broken". That's why I started going to the Wintergreen location. Then they closed the Wintergreen location in May of this year. The temperature is freaking 82°. Then the dumb management brings in swamp coolers, those only work in hot DRY environments. So they just have big fans in essence. It sucks!
I think they are to cheap to actually fix the A/C!

The place is a bit rundown, but you'll find most of the equipment needed for a good workout.

Currently the AC seems to be broken (and apparently has been for at least 6 weeks). Working out at 85+ degrees is not a great experience.

With working AC probably 3.5 stars, but currently I definitely would go to a different gym.

DO NOT EVEN THINK OF JOINING THIS GYM. I’m leaving my review from last year below. They had a whole year to fix their AC and still no AC this summer 2025. Summer TWO of working out in extreme high temperatures and management does not care. Just wait until someone gets a reaction to working out in such heat. Review from summer 2024:
Ehm, no AC in the hottest summer on record? Don’t thank me for my patience Gold’s, we’ve been working out on 90-100 degrees for months now. Prioritize the customers’ well being. You’ll be sued if someone gets hurts as a result of the high temperatures due to the lack of AC.

Update: It’s summer again and the AC is broken again ( I don’t think it was ever really fixed) I just don’t understand how management has not solved this issue yet or has no care to do so. This gym has to be shut down amongst this heat wave. It was almost hotter in the gym than outside. It’s very unsafe for members, please be careful!

A/C has been broken for months. There seems to be no sense of urgency on behalf of management to get the A/C fixed. I didn’t want to be too critical of the gym because everything else is pretty much good but if management is willing to go months on end without A/C it makes you wonder what else is management being neglectful about that members don’t see. It’s so humid and muggy in the gym and it isn’t safe to have an intense workout in there.

This gym is poorly maintained. The A/C has been broken for weeks, with indoor temps reaching 82 degrees one day, and the elevator is out of order, which means people with mobility issues or who are re-habbing injuries can’t use any of the equipment. With the closure of the Wintergreen location, you would think Golds Metro DC would devote resources to maintaining this location.

I joined gold's gym in Rockville Town center about 6 weeks ago. I was pleased with the equipment and the location. Unfortunately there are some other serious problems. Number one is maintenance. The air conditioner has been broken for 3 weeks and when you ask the people at the desk when they're going to fix it they say, it's up to corporate. I'm not sure what that means but working out in an enclosed space at 90° is not pleasant. They also for some strange reason keep the bathrooms IE toilets locked and on accessible. I don't know what the deal with that is. When you ask them about it they say it's out of service. But it's not. Also, there are several other maintenance issues like the elevated doesn't work. So I am not thrilled with this choice

Yesterday and today the A/C was not working and it was pretty hot there even in the morning. Lot of members were commenting about how uncomfortable it was to workout. I was told that the A/C was out for all of last summer and people went elsewhere or unhappily lived with it. Hope that is not the case this summer.

I’ve been in the Health & Fitness industry for more than 12 years. I have seen many fitness facilities, stand alone or in corporate centers. One of my biggest frustrations in the industry is when partners/ LLCs want to run a business and make loads of cash, but fail in their responsibilities of effective management of employees and create positive change with their clients. What those in the industry forget is that you are working with people and those people are your clients they want to change their lives. When a company operates and does not create a welcoming atmosphere in their facility, that says something. The client/ customer is not important.

Golds Gym in Rockville Town Center is a poor example of a well run facility. The organization does not care to spend the money and hire, train and retain well rounded staff/employees to welcome with a smile and introduce clients to a new way of being, exercise and wellness. Instead of being stewards of the industry by setting an example, they operate a facility without a proper functioning HVAC system for months in the summer.
It’s unfortunate that this facility has both poor leadership and management which trickles down to every worker on the fitness floor.
My customer experience was no better, no enthusiasm, no passion, little expertise.
I would not recommend this place.
There is a lot of competition, either they improve or they will cease to function.

I canceled my membership at the beginning of January.

Even though the equipment isn’t new, it’s well maintained.
More importantly the weights are all in order and nothing is lying on the ground.
I specify this because I’ve been to other gold’s where it’s all chaos to find matching barbells, much less walk and not trip on a random weight lying around.

I took away 1☆ just because there is still some rust and some of the equipment are a little older and it’s a smaller sized gym.

That being said everything seemed to work as it should.

Parking is free for two hours which is a def +

If you're thinking about joining Gold’s Gym, think again. The air conditioning has been broken for months, and the gym's "solution" was to bring in a few fans that don't even work properly. The environment is beyond uncomfortable, making it almost impossible to get through a workout without feeling overheated and frustrated.

It's clear that the comfort and safety of their members are not a priority here. With the high membership fees, you'd expect basic amenities like AC to be maintained. But here we are—months later—with nothing but broken fans and empty promises.

I’m thrilled to wait for their likely automated response, which will surely do nothing to fix the situation. Save your time, money, and energy—find a gym that actually cares about its members.

My family and I recently signed up for a free pass online to try out Gold’s Gym with the intention of potentially becoming members. We were excited to test out the equipment and classes at this location. However, our experience was unfortunately marred by the behavior of the person at the front desk.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with an unwelcome attitude. The staff member informed us that our free pass was only valid for the night we booked it. We signed up for the free pass around 11pm because we intend to go the next day. It was not indicated anywhere in the email confirmation or on the website that the pass is only valid for a certain day or it’s only valid the night we signed up for the free pass. We had planned to use the pass the following day, and if we had been aware of this restriction, we would not have made the trip. However, this was not the main issue at all. If there were restrictions regarding the pass in this location, we would have been okay with it. He could've explained it to us properly.

The interaction with this individual was disappointing and unprofessional. He was condescending and showed little interest in assisting us. We felt as though he was dismissive and unhelpful, which was surprising given that customer service should be a priority in such roles.

People in customer service positions should strive to assist and provide clear information to potential clients. Unfortunately, this experience left us with a negative impression of Gold’s Gym. We hope that management will address these concerns to improve their service in the future.

I wanted to find a gym where I could work out near my children's activities. Knowing my 12-year-old wanted to go with me on occasion, I scanned Gold's website for age policies of guests with no luck. We visited Gold’s and asked a staff member if children were allowed and were told yes. We then asked if my child needed a separate membership and was given a contradictory answer.

Leaving unsure, I checked the website again and found the Silver membership, which allows one guest per visit. Since my child would go with me at most 2 days/week for the next month and maybe 1 day/week during school, the Silver membership seemed ideal. With no age policies online, I asked my husband to drop in to Gold’s the next time he was in the area. He spoke to a second staff member who assured him the Silver membership would allow children as guests. Feeling confident, I signed up online that night so I could go to the gym the next day. I searched the contract and, again, found no age restrictions.

When my child and I went back to Gold’s, a third staff member turned us away, as "guests had to be 16." After some back and forth, she allowed us in but flagged our account. A couple days later, I returned alone and found the staff waiting to tell me the gym guest policy was 18+ and that the policy was “everywhere.” Stunned, I spoke with the manager who said she would issue me a refund. At first I agreed but then felt something was off, so I asked her to direct me to the policy for assurance. Instead, she pulled out a card for a weeklong trial pass, which had the 18+ details in fine print. I asserted that was a different “guest” mechanism and asked where it was in the contract. She referred me to a section that didn’t exist, as our contracts were different, then excused it as a miss when membership options changed. The first staff member chimed in and asked who told my husband our children could be guests, as if to find a scapegoat (that wasn't him).

As a “middle ground” the manager offered to change my membership so my child would be policyholder and I the guest, which sounded wrong. I asked if I would be able to visit without my child and was told no. I told her that would not work, as I would want to attend alone the majority of the time. She then said I could purchase a summer student membership for my child—at double the cost of a normal membership. So, a supervised guest has to be 18, but now a 12-year-old can have their own exorbitant membership?

Shocked by the inconsistent and questionable messaging, I cited all of this as bad customer service and that the right thing to do would be to honor the contract. The manager got defensive and accusatory, repeating over and over that she would not make exceptions for me, claiming my family a liability. Disenchanted, I acknowledged that I would not change her mind, so the least she could do was to work with corporate to correct the policies/contracts for others. She fired back that she didn’t care about corporate and only cared about her location, "gave me options" that I just didn't like, and handed me the corporate e-mail address and told me to contact them, as I was not the only who recently complained about the same issues.

Aware of and indifferent to ongoing issues, misrepresenting policies, a lack of consistent messaging flowed to staff, severe lack of customer service. In some ways, I understood the manager's stance; however, how we got there left a lot to be desired. I’m glad the end result was that I was not locked into a contract with this gym. (Especially as each time I visited, there was no working A/C in the middle of summer.) I will be watching my financial statements closely for that refund.

I like all of the windows and like that it’s on 2 floors, which gives you nice options to look up when you want to vary your workouts. They are one of the few gyms that still has the Jacoba ladder machine and skating machine. Very nice location and great classes. It’s great that there is garage parking for snowy days. You can get your parking ticket stamped at the front desk . But you have to move your car within 2 hours and then get a new ticket if you want a longer workout

I am an eight year veteran of the US navy and I have literally trained in Gold’s locations all over the world. I can say without hyperbole that this location is the worst one that I have visited. A few months ago my partner was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma so we moved to Rockville town square to be closer to her family and her care providers. Initially I was excited because there was a gym located about 100 yds from my front door. My excitement quickly turned into disappointment upon enrolling for a membership. Granted, I’m a fitness minded individual and I can make it happen wherever, but this location is so severely lacking in all of its features that I would rather pay $60mo and drive a mile to onelife. From the moment you walk in the door it’s clear that it’s not staffed by fitness professionals because it’s a staff of teenagers that don’t look up from their phones to acknowledge you when you walk in. The locker room facilities are filthy and not maintenance at all. I left a towel sitting on a curtain rod in the shower where it sat for a month before I brought it to the attention of a manager. There were dead insects ground into the carpets in the locker room that had been there for who knows how long indicating that it never gets vacuumed. The bathroom area smells like an open sewer because the motion activated urinal is broken and it never flushes. The facility itself is poorly maintained, dated, old, and none of the equipment is serviced properly. Barbells are rusty, there’s a sparse amount of weightlifting equipment and an obscene amount of treadmills and cardio equipment that never gets used indicating that this location is woefully out of touch with modern fitness trends. There’s two flat benches and two squat racks and not one (!) pull up bar in the entire gym. Gold’s is supposed to be known as the, “mecca” but this is such a poor representation of your brand. When I signed up I was told that there would be a $65 yearly maintenance fee for facilities upkeep but it looks like no one has put a dime into this place for a very long time. Sounds like it was an effort to recoup some money you lost during covid. This is a poor representation of your brand. You need to do better.

Never opens on time on their posted hours of operation (5AM). You end up waiting around outside the gym at 5 in the morning. If you do get a work out in, the showers have had no hot water for the last 3 months.

The nicest, most professional staff I've ever seen and the best gym in my 25 years of working out. Great gym, great machines and equipment, great sauna, and there's always enough weights and equipment at all times. Gym is always very clean. I would highly recommend.. The staff do not communicate with the members who use weights and slam them to the floor while working out. The practice should be strictly prohibited at all times while using the facility. The gym is located beneath a condo community. When the weights are dropped to the floor it sends a jarring sound & vibration that is heard and felt above. Signage may help to inform members that the practice is forbidden. Employees should use their authority to enforce. The gym opens at 5am - 10pm daily, 8am-6pm wknds. This problem is a daily occurrence and must end immediately.

Conveniently located gym that had a ton of equipment that serious weight lifters will appreciate. The facility is taking extra precautions during COVID to ensure cleanliness. Ample amount of free weights, cardio machines (even stair climbers!) and TVs. The only things that are missing (perhaps due to COVID) are mats and resistance bands. Free weights go up to at least 150 lbs. Unlike the previous reviews, I think the safe are great. They don't get in your way but are friendly and recognize regulars.

I really like this gym. I have been going here for a few months and chose it after trying out many gyms in the area.
I go here for the classes, which are great and never crowded. You don't need to preregister for them, just show up. The instructors are super helpful and make sure that you are doing the exercises correctly (which they can do because of the small class sizes).
I really like the kids club, and it is only a $4 drop in fee. Also parking is great, the garage is right next door and they validate the first two hours.

I grew up in this area, but have not been local for a long time now. I was in town recently and wanted to check out a place to exercise so I decided on checking out this Gold's.

I used a guest pass found online that gives you three days free to try the gym. When I came in the front desk staff seemed a bit confused with my pass. They got the assistant manager to help me and he was a real nice guy named Greg. He was helpful and asked me what I was looking to accomplish and looking for in a gym. His customer service was real good.

The location itself is located in Rockville Town Square so parking can be an issue and I imagine this location can get crowded. The days I went were right after Christmas so it was never too busy. The mens locker room is pretty small, but does boast a sauna.

When I got out onto the floor what really stood out was how old some of the equipment seemed and how run down the walls were. I am not sure if they charge an annual facility fee like so many gyms like to do now a days, but it doesn't seem like they are putting that money back into keeping things fresh and presentable.

The gym has what you would expect from a Gold's Gym like a squat rack, benches, dumbbells, and cardio equipment, but some items are fairly worn. I didn't see any broken machines though.

It is not the cleanest gym I have gone to either, but the bathrooms were clean enough and they did seem well stocked when I washed my hands.

The price I was quoted for membership dues was $39 a month. This seemed pretty high for this gym in particular, but it did give me access to other locations which I am sure are larger. Additionally, if you look at other reviews they mention experiencing charges on their credit cards after they cancel and I had the same experience over seven years ago when I went to Gold's Gym. At this point I would expect them to get paperwork wrong and have to check my credit card statement continuously, so that also makes $39 a month seem a bit high.

I am not sure what gyms in this area are good, but I am not sold on this Gold's location.

You really may want to monitor your card on file every now and then as they try to play foul games by charging you more than the amount due. They did that to me and when I confronted them after finding out, they provided some silly excuse for that, and what’s worse is that they tried to do same the subsequent month. I decided to cancel my membership after meeting my 3 month obligation but they still made attempt to charge (this time triple the amount due) me again. Thankfully, I had changed my card on file. My honest review is that, it’s either the team are cognizant of this foul play or they are simply incompetent!

I hate leaving negative reviews but this place consistently hires front desk girls who are apethetic and unfriendly. It's one thing to not want to get pulled into a conversation at work but when I say "hi" "hello" or "good morning" I just get a dead pan facial reaction. It feels rude and dismissive especially when they swipe my card I always respond with a thank you and I don't even get a grumble. One girl took months to simply acknowledge me enough to say "hi". Seems awfully antisocial for the face of your business and as a patron not the best start to a day.

These are the things that should be improved on this gym:

1) Music is boring. I mean they play the same music over and over again. It does not motivate you to
Lift more. Check out other gyms and you’ll see what I mean about a music that should be played in a gym.

2) I hope they put something about the smell in the men’s locker room. I mean the cleaners are working very well but because there is not enough ventilation as the men’s locker room is all the way to the end of the building, the air can’t get out. So if someone is very smelly, you smell them too. I appreciate very much the cleaner there as she is doing her very best. It is the positioning of the men’s locker that was not done right. If I was to design that locker room, I would design it differently so that air can circulate very well. Oh well, who ever designed that did not think well.

3) Someone is turning off the lights and TVs was literally even before the gym closes. They imply that you have to go! I mean, can you just please make sure you don’t turn off any lights or TV until the clock says so?

4) Men’s shower - they need to replace all the curtains there, it’s pretty disgusting to see molds. If I were to design that men’s room, I would even put plastic curtains there. I would put doors! Also they need to replace the showers themselves. When did they last make a renovation of this?

5) the gym staff or whoever is responsible should from time to time check the gym area to ensure people are returning the dumb bells in the rack area. Or any other items should be put back into place. I just hate those gym goers who are not very considerate. You gym goers should learn your manners to return what you use!!!

6) some trainers does not know how to return the equipment they used for their trainees. I don’t say all, I think I saw about one of them just left some items in the floor for a long time without returning to the right place.

Good facts:

1) Location is by far the best I can think of
2) Decent amount of Equipment
3) Spacious gym

These are my honest reviews.

Probably worst gym I have ever been a member of. The employees are ascerbic and blame the guests for their own lack of communication which leads to billing issues. I had to pay around $300 to leave this institution. They make up fees as they go. When I came in to make my final payment, a Gold’s Gym employee was arguing with a guest over the phone in a hostile manner. She then adopted an attitude when I asked for a paper receipt (want tangible proof I am severed of all obligations). She raised her voice stating she was not responsible for her failure of printing a receipt and wanted me to just accept an email receipt from a company which has been so shady. She showed no incentive to ask a manager to see if someone could reboot the computer and make a second attempt at printing. If you want a small, often dirty gym with lack of amenities and rude service, this is the place for you.

I have been a member of Gold's Gym since 2011. This is by far the worst location I have ever been to. Sol the front desk manager is very rude and approaches members in a nasty manner. The equipment is always broken and there is never enough space for anyone to work out if the gym gets too crowded. They recently hired a new girl at the front desk and she is very kind and understanding. As for the other stuff at the front desk, they are too busy looking at their cell phones to even see when a member is standing there to get checked in or to get parking validated. If you can go another location in the area I suggest that you do!

the worst customer service in my life! Jennifer and Manger Sol were completely unprofessional and lack serious customer service skills.I came in after not being there for 3weeks. I change my card and forgot to update it. Sol said well there is nothing we can do your card is declined. vI explained that i needed to updated it and asked if she could waived the fee. she said no fee as been waived 3 times. I said why? she didnt have the information on why , I asked is there a number I can call to ask questions? She tells me “no”. Is there a manager I can speak to? “no, he left will be in at 11 tomorrow to speak with him”. At this point she was so aggressive I had to tell her to claim down. She’s smirking and giggling the whole time telling me well you’re not getting that your card was declined. Now I am fully upset because she is purposely trying to be loud I guess to embarrass me while she scan members card. All the arguing was unnecessary and so very rude. I left so upset. To avoid any further conflict, I called the office and asked to be transfer to customer service so can pay my bill, ask questions and hopefully go to the gym that day. Jennifer picks up tell me she doesn't know the number but would ask her manager. She kept me on hold so long my coworker told me to just hang up and call back. I call again ask I Jennifer nicely please do not put me on hold. She’s say okay and put me on hold another 7 mins. Keep in mind, I can see everything I’m outside the gym. I try a 3rd time, call on the other line while I’m still on hold and the manager Sol picks up. I asked for the number or to be transfer to billing or customer service, now she tells me customer service is closed at 5:00pm. I asked her why she didn't mention this to me this earlier? instead of arguing for 30mins I could have been calling customer service for help and pay my bill, but she told there is no number you can call instead of offering me that option while I was in the Gym. This completely unacceptable, I almost assumed she was racist but form the reviews I see this gym just has HORRIBLE customer service. Email Golds Gym support a month ago still haven't heard anything. I really do not understand how They allow there employees to be so rude.

Avoid this place at all costs. The equipment and locker room make it nearly unusable. There is a weird cedar and feet smell that is everywhere in this place. The worst part is that they make you sign a 12 month contract and then do not honor the cancelation procedures even with a documented move and paying the last several months. I have been going here since 2012. This is an awful place, and if you have any other viable option, you should choose it. They will be nice to you to get you to sign up but ti all ends there. It is consistently dirty, constantly smelling like a mix of hot diapers and foot odor. The attendants are not helpful in the least, and are generally unwilling to help you with even the slightest of problems. The TV (Dish network) consistently goes down, and when it is working, they only get 5 or 6 channels. They cannot help you with any billing issues there, you always need to deal with them with their corporate entity, and rest assured you will need to at some point, as they will jump at the chance to charge you a late fee for the slightest infraction, or cause some mysterious glitch to conveniently allow them to charge you a late fee. The locker room is consistently dirty. Weights are not racked, people are allowed to workout without shoes or socks. Their manager, whom I have asked to contact me on multiple occasions, is on his own schedule, and has yet to get back to me, even after I've left messages with the attendant. Horrible place that does well because it is in Rockville town square.
