I have been member for 5 years, and recently terminated my membership due to their mishandling of my credit card on file. Most front desk folks aren’t professional with their service. Previous manager Mike tried his best, but now that he is relocated there’s really not much in terms of proper management. Had good time as a regular but for the lack of proper management.

This place is soooooo old, most of the machines have something wrong with them. Lots of wasted space with broken cardio equipment. They also gave me a $5 discount, then took it away after a few month. Please fix your equipment!

The gym itself is a 3-star gym. Nothing particularly good, but it has what you expect from a basic gym.
However, the process of cancelling a membership is slow, inconvenient, and costly. I moved away from the gym, and needed to cancel my membership. There is no way to conveniently cancel online. After 2 weeks of calling them to cancel, I was still being charged for my membership. I eventually reached a representative on week 3, and my cancellation request was honored. The catch to that you cannot cancel immediately, but for 30 days out, during which they charge you. While I initially requested cancellation of my membership on Sept. 3, 2024, my request was not honored until Sept. 17, and so they are keeping my membership active until Oct. 17 and charging me for that time. That comes to 3 bi-weekly membership fees totaling about $60 after my initial cancellation request, for a gym I'm not close enough to conveniently visit.

The front desk worker, Mark, has an aggressive temperament and acts like he owns the gym, creating an uncomfortable environment. He stares intently at members while they are working out, including females, looking for an opportunity to harass them and let his anger out at a minority. He is often friendly to white members and will walk to their machines and chat loudly, disturbing the other members who are trying to workout. Read the reviews and you'll see the complaints from minorities and praises from white members. No gym should have these many reviews about the front desk guy. Someone with anger management issues should not be working the front desk let alone have access to the personal information of the members. Management will not do anything about it except provide a canned response, it's clear this has been going on for years. I felt discriminated against and do not recommend this gym. Actions reveal values and this is clearly a gym that does not value diversity, inclusion and respect.

I had been a member for over a year, and my overall experience was satisfactory until yesterday.

While intending to perform deadlifts, I noticed both platforms were occupied, so I proceeded to do the exercise off the platform. During my workout, a front desk staff member approached me before I could finish my set, mentioning concerns about the perceived loudness of the noise. I explained that deadlifts naturally involve some noise and reminded them that the gym isn't a library. Despite my explanation, the staff member insisted I either reduce the noise or wait for an available platform. Consequently, I had to wait an additional hour for a platform to become available, disrupting my workout.

Upon contacting the manager, I was informed that dropping weights on the gym floor not only damages the floor but also the plates and barbells, which are expensive to replace. While I understand the concern for equipment, I felt disappointed with the response and found it challenging to believe that the manager might not fully grasp the gym experience.

As a result of this experience, I've decided to cancel my membership, and I would hesitate to recommend the gym to others.

I take back my good review. I bought a condo last year and emailed Nikki saying that I couldn't afford the gym membership anymore, and that I was moving further away. She talked me into a 6 month hold, whereupon we would discuss my finances and see if it works. Well, of course buying a condo, staffing changes at work and getting engaged really changed my life quickly in those 6 months. I forgot about the membership freeze. Nobody contacted me, but instead I began getting harassing emails and text messages saying my bill is due. I emailed and texted back at least one dozen times with no response from the gym. I did not call them because I will not have hearsay in a phone call be held against me. I document all of my contacts.
Then, they sent a DEBT COLLECTOR after me! I have worked tirelessly for my good credit score and now there is a debt collector after me for $191 that I never consented to paying. I specifically told them I would reevaluate my finances and we would talk. Now I have to battle a debt collector. Wow, thanks.

Gold gym located at Rockville was the first gym I attend and after just two months I canceled my membership because they’re very unprofessional and their front desk staff is very rude, their only answer to everything is sorry I can’t help you. Everyone that works there don’t even look like they workout. I would highly recommend any other place instead.

Very bad customer services. A man at the front desk with a bad temper and with an attitude responded badly because I asked him why they raised the price of my membership very frequently and told him that the price is high compared to other gyms. ends by sending me to exercise elsewhere.
There is more to say, is long story but
The reality is that I felt discriminated

Old equipment that frequently breaks takes weeks before it gets fix.

This GYM needs an update. At least change the scale to the ones the other golds gym have. The sauna is super small at most 3 people fit here.

β˜… 3

Outdated gym. The gym has everything you need, but I believe other gyms in the area offer similar pricing or better for memberships. The other gyms have much more variety in equipment. Also, the gyms are in well spaced leased areas, so the equipment is more spaced out.

Pros - Friendly staff, most equipment you need, sauna, rowers (cardio)

Cons - No turf area, too many cardio machines (two massive rooms of treadmills, ellipticals and bikes) that are never used, no refillable water stations, squeaky hamstring curl machine, stretch room? used by others for workouts and stretching which makes it crowded.

Recommendations:
1. Turn the back room upstairs (near dance and cycle studios) or turn the current room downstairs into a turf area with ropes, Rogue dog sleds, Inspire Fitness Ft2 Functional Trainer (or similar), etc
2. Install filtered refillable water bottle stations on both levels
3. Purchase a third platform for deadlift, squatting, and other exercises.
4. Purchase Rogue Echo Bikes and Concept2 Skiers for cardio options similar to the Concept2 Rowers.

Excellent gym, especially if you’re looking to get in shape and build muscle. The staff is awesome, especially the gentleman who works the front desk Tuesday/Thursday AM- super friendly. I see some complaints about equipment being β€œold”, but it doesn’t matter.. fundamentals will get you there. Arnold wasn’t exactly working on the 2020 modern equipment. Also you just can’t beat the price and Mike and the trainers are all knowledgeable

Marc W. - The most rude employee. We came in with my friend to use a guest pass as we’re interested in getting a membership here. As soon as we mentioned that we wanted to use our guest pass, his demeanor changed and he was very rude, as if he was doing us a favor. He asked for our license and we forgot it but we had a picture of it and he said he needs the physical license… I asked if he needed to scan it and he said no. I don’t understand what difference the picture and physical license is. Anyways, it wasn’t the fact that he needed the license but how RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL HE WAS. I will never return to this gym again

Use caution - get everything is writing.

My wife and I put our gym memberships on hold at the start of the pandemic. In mid-November I received a phone call from a Golds Gym representative informing me that the pandemic hold on the membership was going to expire this month as they re-opened more fully. We had moved during this time and I asked if we could cancel the membership instead. The representative said yes that she could cancel the membership for us at this time over the phone and that once we initiate the process we will have to pay one more billing cycle and would be able to use the gym until mid December but then it would be gone.

However, Upon reviewing my credit card statement this month I found that they had been charging my wife and I again in December and January (total of ~$200). When I reached out to both the local gym we had used and corporate management I was told there was no record of the phone call ever taking place and that they would not refund any of the money. I explained that we hadn't even used the gym in the past 2 months because we were told the membership had been canceled. They said it didn't matter and that there was nothing they could do because I couldn't prove to them that I had talked to someone about canceling my membership. It is unclear to me if this was just incompetent's on the part of the woman who called me and explicitly expressed that she was canceling the memberships or a more dubious effort to scam people into keeping memberships they don't want. Because in this case they do have all the power. I did not think to write down the precise time, date or woman's credentials who called and promised me that she had taken care of it. Now they can simply say "it did happen" and get away with it. I doubt there is anything that can be done at this point but someone needs to know that Golds Gym is doing this type of thing.

*Update - the business just responded to this post (see below) and gave me the same email address that told me they wouldn't do anything about it. Just wanted to make sure people knew that just because they responded to this review, doesn't mean they even attempted to resolve the concern. All for show it seems.

DO NOT RECOMMEND- When we received the reopening notice on June 19th I was certain that I would not be back in the Gym due to the Coronavirus outbreak. I tried contacting management multiple times to either freeze or cancel my account before charges hit my credit card. I was charged for services that I will not be using and the manager stated that i couldn't get my money back because there is a 30 day policy. The gym did not give me a 30 day opportunity to either freeze or cancel. The lack of response and understanding in the middle of a pandemic is disappointing. They are pretty much trying to take my money by force because they wont refund and the only choice is to reactivate in order to terminate which results in another charge. WE ARE UNDER A PANDEMIC AND GOLDS GYM IS TRYING TO MANIPULATE CUSTOMERS TO GET MORE MONEY INSTEAD OF BEING HELPFUL.

I would have gone back once the pandemic got better but not anymore. Horrible Customer Service and professionalism.

Great gym with easy parking and friendly staff. Have to say my favorite person here is Mark who greets us by name every time we come in during the week. He knew us and made us feel welcome after the 2nd time coming in and gave us to push to keep coming back.

The selection of equipment is to be expected for the price, plenty of weight machines, and cardio. They also have a day care for those needing someone to watch their kids, although most of the clientele that I see is on the older side.

The shopping center gives lots of options for getting a bite to eat after working out.

Deceptively huge. Numerous areas for all kinds of exercise activities - alone or in groups. Great staff and trainers. Do yourself a favor and sign up for some personal training. Even at my advanced age, I have learned some useful things. An amazing number of machines. My only nit is lack of rack of pre loaded e-z curl bars and a Scott curl machine for full ROM weighting on biceps. Definitely a tiny whine.

I appreciate the many, many options of group fitness classes that this location offers.

Mia is the BEST Zumba teacher I’ve ever had and I’ll follow her wherever she teaches to take her classes. Don’t EVER let her go!!! Please!!! She gives so much of herself and shows up with new music, new choreography and SO MUCH energy and excitement that each class feels like a party!!! LOVE HER!!!

Teri is amazing. Each class is different but familiar. I get a total body workout every session that I spend with her. She’s supportive, motivating and creative. Thank you for all of her classes.

Larissa is super creative and I love her energy. Her classes are always new and different and she makes working out so much fun!

I miss Deanne who used to teach a Barre class on Friday mornings. She was another top teacher that I miss so much.

Helaine is a teacher that delivers her tough work out with a laugh and a smile. I always leave with a full body workout but it doesn't feel like work while we're doing it. She is wonderful!!!

Thank you for all of the instructors, you’re doing a fantastic job with the level of teaching and wide variety of workouts you offer. The gym is clean and orderly and the staff makes the effort to fix things in a timely fashion.

I'll give it a 3 because Wintergreen has been good to me. When I signed up for their membership I was told that the three-month agreement is the same as you pay monthly, then I realized that was a 3-month obligation and I could't close my account temporally when I needed to be out of town for more than one month. (My friend didn't need to pay the expensive enrollment fee last year but I do this year.)

Why I am so angry now is because I couldn't end my membership (after obligation) immediately, I wasn't noticed when I signed the agreement with them that cancellation will have 30-day process time. This is ridiculous. I will move out of this city very soon and I will just waste a one-month membership fee. They just don't mind. They definitely were intended doing so, so that they can charge you one more time when you want to end your membership. This is a bad ending. This is NOT THE WAY DOING BUSINESS.

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TELL YOUR DEAR CUSTOMERS WHAT THEY REALLY SHOULD KNOW.

IN THE PHONE CALL THE MANAGER JUST DIDN'T SHOW ANY CARE.

Recently started here out of convenience. Having never been a member of a gym I'm not very impressed. I mean yeah it's a room with weights. And that's it. If you're looking for something other than a room with weights, this isn't the place for you. I've also asked three days now to speak to a trainer and not once have I spoken to one. Don't even need one. Was just curious what the curriculum was. Anyway, meh from me. Maybe if the staff kept the weights in order I'd give them 4 stars. Good clean gym with all of the standard equipment. Do yourself a HUGE favor, find Andres Music and get him to train you! He is by far the most effective trainer that I have ever experienced. I have a pattern of signing up for gyms and going for a month or two then never going back... this happens every year or so. For this reason I waited a few months before writing this review. Andres is worth every penny, and if I were a rich man I would just throw money at him for his time... but sadly I am not rich and have to limit my sessions. The gains I am experiencing are fantastic and I can't say enough good things about my experience.

Another person who is worth mentioning is Mark at the front desk. It took 2 visits for him to know me by name and 3 visits before he started giving me a hard time for not coming as often as I should! He is the best and is a great part of the team, he really makes me want to come back again and again.

In general the employees here work well as a team and are exceptional at creating a welcoming and non-intimidating environment.

The managers here will flat out lie to get you to sign up for a membership. I signed up with Tyrel and he assured me that it was a month to month membership. Despite carefully reading the contract, I missed where he had hidden an initial term of 12 months (I guess this is why they use size 7 font). Sadly, it was too late by the time I noticed. The wintergreen plaza gold's gym has since gone through several changes in management, and sticks by their predatory methods of lying to lock people into contracts. I would recommend avoiding Gold's Gym like the plague. Their customer service is atrocious!

I joined this location back in 2011 when it was still a Fitness First. At that time, it was great. The facilities, people, and services were fantastic. I also bought personal training sessions and have been using them since 2011. Sadly, a couple of years ago, they got bought out by Golds Gym.

Since that time, the club has gone downhill. My husband always has to wait for equipment and an unreasonable amount of the equipment I want to use doesn't work properly, likely because they have a single guy (amazing though he is) trying to fix equipment in all the local clubs. I kept going though because my trainer is amazing and the gym is really close to my house.

Recently, though, I've had to stop using the gym because of a fractured tibia. I requested a freeze be put on my membership as I couldn't use the facilities. The woman at the front desk said she couldn't help me and I had to "call corporate"--a phrase you need to get used to if you go to Golds. So I called corporate and they said I needed to send them proof of my injury. Fair enough.

What isn't fair enough is that now, more than a month after I requested that freeze, I'm still being billed for PT I can't use and the only response I get from corporate is "this is solved." By "solved", they mean the document from my doctor doesn't say it's a permanent disability, so they won't refund the charges for PT I can't use. They apparently won't refund PT sessions unless you're permanently disabled or dead.

I finally had enough of contacting corporate and just wanted to cancel my PT altogether, so I did it online (after the PT director had said he'd take care of it but didn't really). I went to the manager of the gym, Mike Murphy, and gave him all the annoying details of everything I've tried to do over the last month to get the PT frozen (then cancelled) and the sessions I couldn't use refunded. I had sent them ample documentation of the injury, but all Mike could tell me was that corporate said no. It seems that the GMs of Golds gyms are really just figureheads for corporate and aren't actually allowed to do any real managing...like taking care of a member who has paid them almost $6,000 in 2 years.

Unless you consider the phrase "contact corporate" and being handled a quarter sheet of paper with the contact details adequate customer service, spare yourself the headache and find another place to work out.

Great gym with lots of great equipment, classes, and staff. Staff are very knowledgeable, professional, and encouraging. I like several changes since this Fitness First facility was taken over by Gold's Gym. The current 12-week Fitness Challenge is a good idea. It is motivating me to set goals and do more, although I do wish that the specific Challenge events offered--Bootcamps--were not so hard on aging knees! I really couldn't take advantage of them and wish a couple of levels had been offered.

A nice gym with plenty of equipment and friendly staff to help you when you need it. The trainers are great: very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I train with Bianca and before I started, I never thought I'd actually want to go to a gym. Working with her has completely changed my perspective on exercise and fitness. A couch potato no more!

I have mentioned to the manager how dirty the machines are. But she did nothing about it. I would give one star if it wasn't for the nice trainers.
Management gets no star.
