I am a member I went to Pasadena location for a little help from the pantry the young lady that was working there said to take this amount of each item so I did exactly as she told me then another older lady came up to me and said I was taken to much stuff I then said politely your workers right there told me to get what I am getting I literally had one box and was following what I was told as hard as it was even going there to get a little help because it’s been a struggle then you talk yourself into reaching out for help and the older woman working there make me feel humiliated I said ok you and your workers should definitely get on the same page and I asked what do you want me to put stuff back and she said yes if you think you took to much I said ma’am I took what your worker told me to take so of course I started taking items out of my one box and then I left. The older woman working the pantry made me feel about two inches tall and on top of it being my first time ever reaching out I was totally blown away. I think that the pantry should make bags or boxes up for the people so this kind of situation and treatment never happens again and two be on the same page I can honestly say i will never go to the Y and ask for any help ever again I can’t even tell you in words about the embarrassment I felt as if I was doing something wrong and all I was doing was what the younger lady told me to do I am a member and have bee For about 4 1/2 months my membership ends the end of December and I don’t know if I’ll even get another membership

I like the pools. But many of the lifeguards just talk to each other. I realize that the job is often tedious, but they are there to watch the swimmers. Not to socialize.

They have updated the equipment and the lighting in the gym facility. Also machines have been relocated in a circuit based on muscle groups. The large TVs that used to hang from the rafters have been replaced with individual TVs that are now on ellipticals, bikes and treadmills. There is now an open space in the gym to use battle ropes and/or free-range motion exercises. I would like to see the basketball courts updated sometime soon during the spring.

I write this review after a prolonged and deeply disheartening experience with the YMCA of Central Maryland (including the Pasadena location) involving exclusion, account deletion, and a troubling lack of transparency.
As a father and legal guardian, I was denied meaningful participation in my son's summer camp experience. I’m a disabled veteran recovering from my second surgery this year, yet I remain actively involved, having volunteered over 120 hours at my son's school and coached his youth sports teams in limited capacities.
In June 2025, I respectfully offered to volunteer, noting my Red Cross certification, active background checks (AACPS, Fort Meade CYS), and educational credentials. I received no response. Instead, I was quietly blocked from my son’s records, my account was deleted without warning, and I was denied updates, even after repeatedly confirming my legal rights.
Over six weeks, I made multiple good-faith efforts to resolve the issue. I sent documentation, explained my guardianship status, and asked for access to be restored. I was ignored. Only after some pro se legal escalation did YMCA legal counsel finally respond, but still, no resolution or response was offered.
This wasn’t just poor customer service. It reflected a systemic disregard for parental rights and transparency. For someone like me, a Black father to a mixed-race child and a veteran navigating medical recovery and legal barriers, it felt personal and a violation of my parental rights.
As of today, September 3, 2025, my responses remain unanswered and my accounts and access to my son remain severed, despite being a paying member.
If you’re a parent, especially one in a unique family situation, I urge you to advocate for your place in your child’s life. Institutions should never get to decide how involved a loving, responsible parent is allowed to be. We all deserve better.

This is a delightful Y. Mind you, I've only ever gone to the pool (which is the only amenity that interests my small human). All of the pool facilities are outdoors, which makes this ideal for summer. There is a pool that is exclusively shallow, which is perfect for kids. There is also a splash pad for very small people as well as a lap pool for larger humans. They have lovely umbrellas and deck chairs for individuals who are tired of swimming or me when I no longer wish to play Marco Polo in endless successive rounds. Staff is polite and pleasant, and my child has not drowned yet, indicating that the lifeguards are doing a fine job thus far. The locker room is extremely clean and well-equipped, and the showers work beautifully with the added bonus of looking exactly like the one that my grandmother used to have in her bathroom (circa 1955). My only criticisms are (1) the dressing rooms are a bit far from the pool, which means that there are small puddles of pool water traversing the hall past the racketball courts (2) there is invariably one hair dryer that does not work, and it isalways the one you pick.
Honestly, if those are the worst things you can say about your rec center, you're ahead of the game.

Fantastic gym and pool area, highly recommend! I've been going for about a year now and I think this is a fantastic community. Every time I enter, I have the pleasure to be sincerely greeted by either Aden, Zak, or Spencer. Whenever I have any questions, they are always more than happy to help or assist in any way possible. The gym setup itself, pool, bathrooms, & the equipment are all very updated, cleanly, and professional. I just wish there was a way I could bring friends/family to the gym so as to show off what an amazing location the Y in Pasadena, MD really is. 10/10 no regrets joining, just wish I had done so sooner!

Beautiful facility with lovely outdoor pools for lap swimming as well as a great family pool with splash features for kid and a separate splash bad. Kids can get life vests. Make sure you check the schedule for hours and if it's a beautiful day and not a school day call ahead to see if you can expect a wait list situation.

It's a very nice facility. They have a ton of equipment, and everything has been kept in very nice condition - even the locker rooms. The pool is great, and they have a bunch of side rooms for other activities (yoga, body pump, etc.).
I wouldn't have called the people working the front desk friendly, but they were competent.
They also seem to have a pretty decent schedule of member and community events.
My only significant complaint was that they made us use a guess pass for a 5-month-old. Come on now... a baby isn't going to be using your equipment.
That, and that the Wi-Fi coverage isn't great.

Was better under previous management. Uprise in thefts from locker rooms. I had requested to speak to the manger multiple times regarding an incident and haven’t gotten a response. They offer income based memberships which only increases these kinds of issues. There are cheaper options in the area for those who can’t afford the Y… no need to bring in clientele with ill intentions.
They got rid of the saunas, the high school swim team takes up almost the entire lap pool in the late afternoon, early evening so forget getting a swim in after work even though you pay for it in your membership. There are kids running around in the main gym area and parents clearly don’t care

This Y is awesome. Employees are super helpful and easy to find. I enjoy their programs and they have lots of shorter timed activities/ meets that are not necessarily gym related for the community. Pools usually clean & always organized. Never encountered a machine down unless it was being worked on & that's done pretty quick. Nice shaded area with flowers around side of building. Decently priced food at the little snack bar area. Daycare people are lovely. They communicate well & actually do stuff with the kids. The life guards are always prompt & friendly. Bathrooms/ lockers are big & clean. I've never used the salon services but its nice to know its available.

Pool- I've been to the pools at the Arnold and Catonsville locations as well and out of the three this one offers the most! Three pools, one specifically for laps, and leisure pool, and one zero entry pool which is great for little kids. Check the schedule though, they aren't always open. Splash pad in the summer! They also check the chemical levels very frequently which I appreciate.
Classes- I've only taken the zumba classes so far and they've all been good. I do have my faves though! Jhena is GREAT. Her classes sometimes kick my butt, but she's alot of fun, so it makes it more enjoyable. Gwen teaches regular and aqua zumba, I've only taken regular zumba with her and I swear she tries to kill me every Saturday, but I keep coming back because it's so much fun, and I always feel thoroughly worked out when I leave. She's fun too! Lastly, Sasha...her Friday night class is exactly what I need for a Friday night. Chill, fun, and encouraging. She doesn't try to kill me and I appreciate it.
The gym equipment..I've used it when I have extra time before needing to pick my kids up. It seems they keep it all in pretty good working order. Sometimes you have to wait on a machine, but I've only run into that once or twice. Lots of options!
Child care- they are always so great with my kids. When we first started coming my 2 yr old really struggled with me leaving her, but the comforted her and sometimes held her for my entire workout if they weren't too busy. My son has always loved it and looks forward to going to mommy's gym.

** UPDATE ** original review was in 2021!!!
Update- November 14th 2024- I have still yet to hear back from the customer service team and have canceled my membership- OH and btw prices just went up again for memberships for the same equipment.
Update - June 2nd 2024- I took the Y up on their offer to email in to speak with their customer service. Can confirm this gym does not care to improve as I have yet to hear back for SEVERAL weeks.
Membership fees are increasing however equipment and group class speakers and microphones are SEVERELY neglected. It’s a shame because all of the instructors are so passionate about leading but aren’t given the best resources to do what they love. Y invest in speakers I’m sure your AP department can set aside some coins to do proper upgrades.
Love love love Rachels spin classes! All of the instructors are so welcoming and treat you like family. The gym is pretty well kept up! Wonderful equipment for all your fitness needs. I recommend this gym!

closings...
Drive all the way there, 2:30, parent's say pool is closin at 3!!! Constant breaks, adult swim??? Well the adults are with their children other than the one's doing the lap pool!!! Close it to test a few children, and that's fine but all of the other lifeguards standing around doing nothing, it's hot our children want to swim!!! This place NEVER SENDS AN EMAIL OR TEXT TO LET YOU KNOW ANYTHING BUT SURE REMEMBER TO TAKE OUT THAT MONTHLY PAYMENT!!! RUDE!!! My son had a swim lesson and when we went outside the main pool was closed for cleaning. We were told that it would open soon. So we sat for 30 minutes waiting. Finally, we went inside and asked the front desk and they said this one class was definitely happening. So we walked back outside and looked all the way down at the end of the pool and finally found his instructor, in the pool Participating in the aerobics swim class. When I asked the front desk if we could be refunded, they said no because technically the class still happened. After asking multiple people where the swim class and then instructor were, we couldn’t get a straight answer and that’s somehow our fault which we now don’t get refunded for. I am extremely unhappy with this location,

Equipment is gross. Old and dirty. Staff can be rude and inattentive. Pool is very crowded. Don't waste your money, they're are several better options in the Pasadena area. Also, be warned this location and others practice predatory business practices such as requiring a 30 day cancellation policy. We recently had to go on a budget and could not meet this requirement and the manager (after having to call 5 times to try and get through to one) would not refund us the over $100! Talk about greed. Would just avoid this place if you're considering. Poor experience altogether.

Cancelled swim lessons and let us know after driving for over 30 mins with 3 young children. They didn't call or email to notify.
After trying to reconcile the sadness with the kids, took them to the pool and the staff informed us it was closed when the hours were documented to be opened and several life guards were standing around.
Desk staff manager was overly-controlling and did not want to work with us to offer our kids opportunities. She kept coming up with more reasons as to why it was ok for the lessons to be cancelled. Her apology was lacking empathy and empty, not respectful at all. Even though there was another staff member who seemed understanding, this manager was callous.
When asking for a refund for the membership, she ignored our request when the whole point was to get swim lessons. Felt like a bait and switch, we'll see if anything actually comes back to us.
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING!
$5 says they'll say, they're disappointed with my review and that they didn't do their best, but it's been shared with the staff and nothing will change...

Not impressed with this gym, one of the worst YMCAs I’ve been to (for lifting). The single smith machine they have is the one that isn’t fixed in place so you lose the benefits of a smith machine. They have ONE leg press, and even worse, it is one of the worst available. It doesn’t allow for full range of motion and the seat is awkward… please get a better one. Their cable machines are either almost broken or actually broken. Whenever I use them, they make a terrible thumping noise that makes me think I’m going to rip the thing apart. They have a poor selection of machines due to their poor range of motion and ergonomics. The positives are that they have the basics (dumbbells, barbells, etc.) but that’s all. My suggestion for this gym is to invest in better equipment.

If you are joining for the pool to lap swim think again. This is worst managed pool I have ever used. The pool is clean, but the Y management can NEVER get the pool schedule correct online. Every weekend I show up when schedule says there will be 7 lap lanes for swimming, and at least two lanes have water walkers, and two are being used for lifeguard class.
This pool is fine in the winter. They have same schedule problems, but because they don't have the same crowds of summer, so it works out. I can normally split a lane, but in the summer they need to stop having lifeguard classes on weekend taking up lanes or open earlier so lap swimmers can have some time to actually swim.
Forget about lap swimming in the afternoons too. Kids run wild through lap pool in the afternoon. They will swim one lap then play till lifeguards tell them they have to swim laps and then kids swim a lap again repeat. It's complete insanity considering they have entire rec pool kids can play in.

My family and I were excited to join this location which seems to offer a lot of amenities. After a couple of workouts here I decided to sign my youngest up for their swim lessons. He had his first set of lessons at a different location before covid. Since we were now members, I decided to give the Y a try and also use the time he is in lessons to get a quick workout in.
The classes were advertised as running for 8 weeks MW, although it really is supposed to be for 7 and that 8th week is for make ups. Well, Monday (first day of class) comes around and I get a call mid day that they are cancelling the class due to the instructor being sick. I understood but realized there was a possibility for the instructor to miss the second class scheduled in 2 days. So I asked if they would refund a portion if that happens.
They told me straight up no and that they would use the last date as a make up day. Mind you, nowhere was it stated that it’s supposed to be only 7 weeks and the last week is for make up if needed. Wednesday (the second day) comes around and sure enough they called mid day to cancel again. This time, there was an issue with their pools. At this point, I didn’t want to take anymore chances and asked to drop out the class and get a refund. Again, I was told no by the swimming instructor Reggie. She was very rude and didn’t display any customer service.
She explained that they would add another day and extra time to each class to make up for it. I actually didn’t mind that but asked what happens if there are more unforeseen circumstances. Would they refund at that point and she said NO. I asked if they would just keep extending the classes if they keep canceling and eh said she didn’t say that they would. So basically the added class date is the make up day and if they happen to cancel again, so be it! She went on to say that she is providing us a courtesy by adding another class as if I was the one who cancelled on them twice. Just didn’t make sense to me.
I am scheduled to work on the make up date, therefore, her “courtesy” doesn’t benefit me. I purposely scheduled the class around my work. Now I’m stuck in this class that hasn’t started and the future of it looks dim. My son is disappointed bc he missed out on other activities to participate. I am never signing up for any of their programs again and have considered canceling my membership because of my experience.

You never know when pool is open. It will shut down while you’re in it. You will show up and it’s closed. At this point I’ve had enough. I decided to take my children to the pool after months of not visiting this center. My children really wanted to go to the pool. I was hesitant because the pool seems to close down at any given moment, and the drive for us a bit far, especially due to the Key Bridge being down. So instead, I decided to call ahead, and was told the pool was open. I asked will they be open despite the storm. I was told they will shut the down the pool for 30 minutes, for every strike that occurs 8 or less miles away. Well I get there and the pool is closed. I waited and was told 30 minutes it should be open. I waited 30 minutes and was told to wait another 30 minutes. That is now a total of an hour. After over an hour of waiting, and unhappy children, we left. I highly doubt they were opening it back up after 5:30PM when they close at 8PM. If you don’t live fairly close, be aware that the pool may or may not be open. I was told to check the weather bug app for updates. I’m assuming it will give updates on time and proximity of thunder strikes. There needs to be another system to update members on status of the pool’s operations instead of us coming in to find out.

the sauna(s) have been broken for MONTHS. It is part of our membership and why people pay for the gym. After weeks of being told several different excuses (the building owner is looking for cheaper contractors, they were waiting on materials, etc.) they have now informed us that it will instead be turned into a secluded changing area? as if the locker rooms aren't already? They also told us if we wanted to use the sauna then we should drive to another location. Ridiculous solution. Don't bother signing up if you expect the sauna to be part of your membership as it is clear they are no longer offering that amenity.

Racism should not be tolerated in no facility. My cousin came to this location & felt that she was treated differently. To the owner; please train all your staff members to be kind. No matter what the race is. Everyone should be treated with dignity * RESPECT

1st time here and I will NEVER return. Was forced to stay on the "kiddie" side and was told that the small 5 foot deep area was off limits; even though it was right next to the lifeguard station. I'm 6'7" tall and have been swimming for over 50 years. Then when I finally find a comfortable spot they kick everyone out of the water. While waiting for them to let people back in, one of the employees told some Black women that they had to get their feet out of the water, but never said anything to the white woman 15 feet away.

My family enjoys working out and spending time here. I love the fact that my kids and can exercise with my wife and myself and we enjoy playing ping pong and air hockey as a cool down. The personnel are friendly and very helpful and I recommend this gym for families to get healthy together. Also, don't forget about the pool under the temperature controlled dome.
