Love this place… But why have the change rooms been closed for so long. Staff gets defensive and dismissive when you ask when they’ll open back up.

Need to shower after a work out before heading to work. Very frustrating being left with no alternatives.

***To the owner comments below; I personally already sent you email correspondences twice about the issues we had to which you gave us a very generic and corporate response that was devoid of any understanding for the issues at hand. I will not reach out again, all your comments seem incredibly performative.****

I took down my old review and wanted to give an updated one after the last time we spent at this gym. My friend and I recently just cancelled our memberships with BPS and we have many thoughts on the gym.

Pros:

- Very large and modern facility with lots of emmetaties (Full gym on the second floor, working area with free wifi, yoga rooms, full showers with lockers and changing facilities).
- Well kept and clean space.
- Plenty of options for climbing on both rope and bouldering.
- Lots of events and chances to meet people.
- Free private parking lot and plenty of bike parking.
- Right next to great food/drink and very close to Union Square.
- Route setting is consistently kept up with for bouldering.
- Kids are regulated extremely well.
- Well staffed so you can usually find assistance whenever needed.
- Clean showers and bathrooms.
- Best hours of operation of any gym in the area.

Cons:

- Expensive in the area considering there is only 1 location. $140 vs. $90 in other places.
- Not beginner friendly. Gym caters more to skilled college age students.
- Route setting for beginners and intermediate climbing is either way too easy or way to hard. It also gets really repetitive.
- Auto-Belay is nearly fully neglected. Routes go unchanged for far longer than their top rope, lead and bouldering counterparts.
- Wooden walls making for poor foot placement and increased slipping.
- Not a lot of variations and offerings for climbing classes. Relies mostly on private 1 on 1 classes.
- Gym is very crowded during normal hours and off work hours.
- Parents with baby cribs and strollers hanging out under top rope and lead climbs is unacceptable.
- Very clique crowd of younger climbers that hog areas during change weeks. Some climbs are completely inaccessible for hours as they get chain climbed over and over.
- Staff plays favorites with certain climbing groups and particular social groups/lifestyles.
- Some staff is very unfriendly and non-personable.
- My partner had a horrible experience with a top rope class with one of the instructors here and it ruined her interest in climbing with how she was treated for the instructors mistakes.

After going there upwards of 2 times a week for 6 months, we decided this gym is not for us, and in all honesty, really made us dislike climbing as people who are trying to really grow with the sport. BP does a really great job building up climbers who already have established higher skills levels, but neglects those trying to pull themselves up in the earlier stages. Considering there are a lot of young, LGBTQ+ working class people in the area who love to climb and are very skilled, that's probably by design to keep those out of the club who aren't as serious as them. It's a very serious gym for very serious climbers most of the time. That can be good or bad depending on who you are as a climber.

Our friends and I both agreed that BP, for how flashy and modern it looks, is a pretty boring gym to climb at most of the time. The last time BP had a wide variety of really fun climbs was over 4 months ago after their last membership competitions. No climbs since then on any of the walls has even come close to that month of climbing, especially for less skilled climbers. For the price tag, we don't think it's worth it for anyone climbing lower than a v4 or 5.9+, and if you want to do more than just boulder.

I'm sure I'll stop in a couple of time in the future since I have some free guest passes to keep things fresh, but if you are a new climber, or want more fun out of your climbing with a less serious attitude, I would go elsewhere.

First time ever going to BPS was a Tuesday late afternoon - early evening. Staff were super chill and the gym space is very open and organized. Gym was busy but no so much that there were waits for anything. We were surprised that all top rope climbs already had GRIGRIs attached but the learning curve is shallow if you have any belaying experience on other devices (such as an ATC or Jul) so we took the belay test to get certified right after getting our gear on. The majority of the rope and boulder setting is done on smooth walls so if you are more familiar with smearing on rough walls which are prominent at some other gyms, be prepared to reconsider how you approach certain moves. Route grading felt a bit soft for me but I still found the setting and use of volumes to be creative. Overall great experience as a visitor.

I love the people that go to this gym and are the base of the community, but the management only cares about their financial interests and it shows. They choose when to be political only when it suits their image—a “progressive inclusive space”—but do nothing to actually back political change, unless there’s a financial benefit for them! Didn’t used to feel this way about BBP, but it’s clear they don’t actually care about their community—don’t get tricked by the image they present, it’s just another corporation.

First time here. Brought my 10 and 9 year old. We're new to this.
Got a great walkthrough/orientation. They bouldered for a while. Then one of the workers, Charlie, came over right before were heading out, and asked if my kids wanted to try auto-belay. They did, and so Charlie gave them a tutorial. We stayed another hour. They had a blast. Very friendly staff and really cool place.

Pros: big gym, nice top-roping, some parking available, and lots of bouldering

I came to the Bouldering Project completely new to indoor climbing. As it was my first time here, I had expected to get a brief safety orientation or a rundown of the basics of bouldering. Instead, I was lent a pair of climbing shoes and told I was all set to start bouldering.

I spent around an hour there; near the end, I had reached the top of one of the beginner routes and started to make my way down. Once I was halfway down, I made the decision to jump down because it was difficult to hold on to the hand hold any longer. I ended up hitting my head, nose, and lip on the climbing wall before landing on the crash pad. Now, I have a scraped lip and mild concussion.

I am hoping that the Bouldering Project will implement a training session on the basics of bouldering and tips on how to fall safely to prevent injuries from occurring.

As a first timer, I expected a safety lesson when I arrived at the gym or even a quick explanation on how to fall correctly/basics on bouldering. I shrugged it off and went along with my friend. Fast forward an hour later, I jumped down from a route with an extremely small top hold because I couldn't hold on any longer and landed badly on my left knee. It buckled and popped and I knew it was game over. They called the paramedics and took great care of me until I was able to get up. I ended up tearing my acl and meniscus.

I'm writing this in the hopes that safety protocol becomes more standard at this gym. This could look like a mini lesson, a video to watch, a pamphlet... anything.

The energy and community feel of the bouldering project is vibrant and safe. I am not a climber but a mom of a 6 year old who learned to love climbing. I get into a happy and supported frame of mind every time I walk into this space. My kid feels nurtured, supported, and safe with excellent teachers. Growns ups encourage kidsto climb with them!!!!

The gym has gone downhill since the change in ownership (used to be Brooklyn Boulders, now Bouldering Project). The coloring system for rating bouldering problems is unpredictable and makes it hard to choose problems. The top roping has always been the real strength of the gym but they have reduced the amount of top roping space and replaced it with more generic bouldering space that is not particularly great, certainly no better than what you find in an average bouldering gym. And the place used to have this amazing vibe which has been replaced by a more anodyne feeling. I still go there but less often and less enthusiastically than before.

Been coming here for about a year and absolutely love it. Started my climbing journey at BBP and the people / staff are very welcoming. They change things up regularly, so there’s always something new to try out. Decent amenities (bring back the two towel allowance for the sauna!). Only gripe is the amount of children running around during peak hours. Can sometimes feel like an indoor playground.

Great climbing gym with friendly staff. Grades are by color and not on the V scale so they give you a bit more of a feeling of liberty to try different colors. Staff helped with selection of shoes giving us lots of sizes and options. I only bouldered but the climbing walls also looked pretty cool. The fitness area upstairs was suitable, took care of what I needed for lifting. Lots of places to sit and do work as well if that’s your thing (It was my thing today). Overall would recommend.

Bouldering wall is laminated so makes it impossible to smear and actually dangerous without any grip on the walls. Definitely not for beginners. Pros: Lovely staff, huge gym in general

Cons: Increased prices from 115 to 135 with one months notice. Seriously, what the heck? This is the main reason for my rating.

Summer program is a glorified daycare with kids running everywhere, especially on the mats. I don’t mind kids but there are way too many for the staff to handle.

Wood walls make it impossible to smear, which is quite necessary for bouldering.

Route setting highly favors tall folks.

I have been going to this gym since March 2022. I think the bouldering route setting is very mediocre and although they claim to be an inclusive gym, I find the routes are often more advantageous for tall climbers (routes are often made harder by increasing the distance). I would appreciate if the route setters could give some thoughts on "short person's beta".

The rope climbing is decent, I particularly like the "tongue" and the lead climbing section. However, it seems that the rope climbing area has gotten smaller with the new renovations, so I am not happy about that. Cambridge already has a a boulder-only CRG and I don’t see the point of having another bouldering focused gym. A nice addition of this gym to the area would be the rope section.

The new co-working space is a bit ridiculous, very small and dark. It’s not suitable for working at all. Generally I think they could invest a bit more in designing a visually pleasing hang out area. Now it just looks like they didn’t know what to do with the couches and tables.

I also obviously don’t like that they are increasing prices with less than a month of notice.

EDIT August 9 2023: They have just increased their prices by THIRTY (that's three zero) percent. Day pass with rentals will cost $40+ now. New ownership seems intent on enshittifying what was once a great gym. Going from 5 -> 3 stars.

Original Review:

It's a corporate mega gym with all the benefits and drawbacks. Expensive, but worth the price. They are actually expanding their facilities, which is a good sign and keeps me wanting to pay dues. Go at off hours if you are a serious climber, oversubscribed horrendously otherwise.

The good:
- If you are new to climbing, this is a great place to get started since they have lots of space to try everything out.
- If you are an experienced climber, they reset frequently enough that you won't get bored and they have the best accessory equipment of any gym I have ever visited (weights, kilter board, hangboards, etc.).
- The hours are AMAZING. The only gym I have ever seen that opens early, great for climbing before work.

The bad:
- Basically turns into a daycare on the weekends with unsupervised kids running all over the place. Get there early if you want to get a decent session in.
- Expensive, just like the rest of Cambridge. Day pass with rentals was almost $30.
- Circuit grading on the boulders (though you might not care about this one):
Most climbs are all crimps, all pinches, etc. with no variety. Sometimes you will endlessly project a V3-5 and then flash the V6-8 right next to it. Some of the climbs are just egregiously reach-y. Thankfully with so many boulders set you can always find something to work on, but it's annoying regardless.

Unrelated to the actual facility itself - this is the SINGLE CHALKIEST gym I have EVER climbed at. Seriously, there are other gyms in the area that have those bulk bowls of chalk out in the bouldering area that are STILL less chalky than this place. People just layer it on here and I have no idea why. Routinely have to brush holds that are just caked in a thick layer of chalk to the point that they have zero texture. Truly baffling.

I have been here a couple times with my friends now. As a complete beginner, I really only have tried some bouldering and the auto-belays, but those were both a lot of fun. My first couple experiences were fantastic. The staff was super helpful and friendly, as well as genuinely knowledgeable about rock climbing and were patient and helpful with me and my friends. The other climbers were also friendly and helpful as well which was really cool. The auto-belays are simple to use and great for beginners. Overall very happy with my experience and definitely plan on coming back.

UPDATE: Started with a disagreement with their shoe policy regarding minimalist footwear, but the managers were very responsive and updated the policy to include sock-shoes, Vibrams, etc.
I haven't experienced the full facility yet (that's a good thing as I'll explain) since I'm still building up strength on the bouldering wall and haven't taken the auto-belay training yet. The training is included in the membership and rope-assisted climbing is two-thirds of the facility, but that smaller third is more than enough to keep me occupied for several weeks! They even re-set the climbs every couple weeks, so you can absolutely progress at your own pace of skill-development.

New ownership seems to have just exacerbated previous issues.

Filled with largely unsupervised young children from noon forward, massively oversubscribed during peak hours, and prices have gone up despite much of the space now being closed for construction. I used to love this gym before they were bought by bouldering project. Since then, it's become much more of a bouldering gym. The bouldering walls are reset two walls per week while the to prope walls are reset one wall per week at best (three ropes have been reset in the last 3+ weeks). They're now planning to decrease the number of rope walls.

It seems like a fine gym for bouldering but I would not recommend it for top rope/ lead.

Came here with a friend using his visitor pass. I believe this place used to be called Brooklyn Boulders, but they have rebranded in whichever city they are in. There are a variety of climbing activities besides bouldering like top rope, which requires a certified belaying expert.

A very friendly and opening atmosphere. Everyone was kind and courteous. The difficulties were clearly mapped out, and I didn't think any run was unfair.

I am a beginner climber, and my experience was very positive. The routes are changed fairly regularly on a round robin basis, so there are also new routes to try.

WARNING for anyone considering climbing here: I was introduced by a friend of mine and enjoyed coming so much that I became an active member. I even started to introduce other friends of mine, some of whom became members, too. But when I brought some of my non-white friends (I'm white), staff refused to honor the advertised discount prices for first-time climbers -- the same price that myself and other friends had received just days before. When I tried to show the staff their own website, they immediately threatened to call the cops on us. When I contacted management to express my frustration, they essentially responded by cancelling my membership. They didn't refund the three weeks that I had paid for and tried to keep charging my card (I blocked the card). When I tried to contact upper management, there was no response. I really wish this was a fake review, but unfortunately it's 100% real. There are climbing gyms in Boston that do not engage in illegal and racist activities.

Oct 2021 - I cancelled my $105/mo membership in early May. Since then they’ve been charging me $135 (?!) every month - June, July, August, September, and October. I have emailed them countless times, disputed with my bank, changed my card number, and somehow the charges still keep coming. Warning to anyone considering a membership.

Nov 2021 - they finally stopped charging me and I got my ~$700 back, from filing disputes with my bank for June-Aug and getting a “refund” directly from them for Sep-Oct. I should note that besides this horrible payment experience I liked going here.

Feb 2022 - when I wrote this review this place was owned by Brooklyn Boulders, but it is now owned by Bouldering Project, so it’s possible this review is no longer relevant, but keeping it up in case it is.

Great facilities, tons of bouldering and ropes. Fitness center upstairs. Locker rooms with nice showers. Friendly staff and a little retail, chalk and such.

The gym is one of the best located and most convenient climbing gyms in Boston with a very kind front desk staff and some very comfortable chairs in their lounge spaces. That’s about the end of the nice things I have to say when it comes to the bouldering project (formerly known as Brooklyn boulders but still under the same hapless management). The problems with the gym are numerous; one of the major ones is the over-enrollment of the gym and frequent closing or altering of hours for their youth teams or competitions that most of their climbing base doesn’t utilize. If you go during any kind of a peak hour at the gym you will find long lines of people waiting on the edge of the bouldering area downstairs and upstairs, the ropes climbing walls are slightly less occupied (probably due to the lack of belay certification time slots and issues with having staff available for those tests) but still for the beginner to novice level walls there will be a line. This would lead you to use some of their fitness equipment while you wait for it to slow down right? Well guess again! The fitness area is also overcrowded and the downstairs racks are even reserved on weekdays during the hours of 5-7 for the youth team (even if they aren’t using it- still reserved). Once you find a place to get your workout started- you might find it hard to get into the workout because the HVAC system isn’t working currently and has had issues since the pandemic began. Nothing like a hot gym in the summer! If the heat is for you it might be your spot but you can’t step it up to the next level as the Sauna isn’t in working condition either. The general manager of the gym has made it known that they are “working on” getting the funds for the sauna and HVAC system but that they haven’t been able to fix it or secure those funds in the last year. They promised to be working on these issues after the switch from BKB to the bouldering project but have yet again fallen short of their promises with no work done and the GM non responsive to email questions about the process and when they might actually get the gym fixed and in working order. The classes offered are starting to come back to the prepandemic level but still only offer small numbers of yoga or fitness classes with those slots generally filling up really quickly for any kind of popular time. This is all while being the most expensive climbing gym in the greater Boston area with memberships being $135 a month. If you are looking for a climbing gym to commit to I would much rather join Central Rock Gym or MetroRock as they keep their facilities up to date and cost less than the bouldering project. Giving two stars because the staff is really nice and the people are the gym are generally great- the gym is just overpriced and underfunded. Too many problems they need to fix and it isn’t fair for a company that charges this much to ask their members to wait (18+ months on the sauna and over a year on the HVAC repairs).

Huge gym. Pleasant space. Stuck to bouldering as I was traveling and didn't bring gear other than shoes. The problems seemed a bit straight forward and simple, taking away some of the fun in figuring out the beta. They lent me a chalk bag which I really appreciated as the liquid chalk I brought didn't work well for my sweaty fingertips. Definitely positive experience overall!

Nice large place. The bouldering is medium-large, but there are still not THAT many problems. Problems have V grades and are marked by the same color hold, with the top hold marked by tape or at the top edge of the wall. Setting is nice, but the holds are super greasy and chalky, give them a brush, people!
Friendly staff.

Very mediocre/bad route setting... Space is very nice and has potential, good workout space, and one of the few places in the area for top rope, but the setting is rather careless unfortunately. Staff were friendly. Looking forward to potential changes since it changed ownership but as of now everything is staying the same according to staff.

this is the worst (climbing/regular) gym I’ve ever been to. The bouldering is comically bad; access to facilities/amenities here is constantly blocked due to closures; top roping certification happens during odd hours and is booked out constantly; the gym itself is be wildly mismanaged and disorganized. On top of all of this, it’s offensively overpriced, even if everything they claim to have was as good as advertised.

Community here is tight and welcoming. The setting is good, though it lacks the complexity that CRG Cambridge often brings - different setting styles. Curious to see how the transition from the Brooklyn Boulders parent company to the new Boulder Projects goes.

The harness climbing was decent enough. I came for bouldering though.

The bouldering routes were aggressively terrible, and also focused on arm strength instead any balance, core strength, or technique. They also catered excessively to tall people, not a problem for me, but jeez, it's not hard to have a short person on your route-setting team, and it makes your bouldering walls a lot more inclusive.

The walls for the Bouldering routes are slippery wood instead of the standard gritty bouldering wall, which literally prevents you from balancing against the wall with your foot because you will just slip. I just... I don't understand why they cheaped out on this. If you climb here you will see why *every other* gym uses a gritty wall.

The handholds are excessively worn and slippery from reuse and/or not being changed out often. Mantles are barely used and in worse condition than the hand holds.

The bouldering area was a bit on the small side and lacked any upsidedown area, or even any serious overhang.

I climb about 8 days a week back home in Austin, and I've been to a lot of gyms around the world. I've *never* seen a worse bouldering gym on any of the metrics I consider important.

Less important than the bouldering, but the sign up process was also painful and long (the worst I've seen, yet again) and included a scam-ish promo. I came here with my uncle since we saw the "buy one get one free" day pass promotion. Once we got there, the people at the front desk informed us that we could not split the "buy one get one free", and we would have to each get one.

The only good thing I can say about the gym is that the people behind the front desk were nice.

It's a large and clean rock climbing gyms. My one complaint is that they generally only have 4 auto belays set up, two of which are on the more difficult side. I wish that they had more considering how packed the gym usually is!

Generally good clean facilities, but they are constantly being blocked from use by the normal members.

Kids programs that are not well managed and run wild across the gym, classes that close large sections of the gym for the 3-5 people participating, and regular competitions that close all the bouldering for 3-5 days at a time.

For the high price of membership its pretty annoying to have all these exceptions to when and how the facilities can be used. Overall good gym, when its actually available.

I came with my daughters after not being there for over a year. I forgot how to belay and how to do the 8 knot. Not assistance was given. Instead I received an annoying passive aggressive response while the instructor looked at me fail the knot and belaying protocols, saying she's sorry but she can't assist. This was not the case a year ago. Even if the instructors don't have time to assist, they should be kind in doing so. They didn't seem to care even when my daughter felt bad about not being able to cling using the auto belay.
Brooklyn boulder get 4 stars for safety but 1 star for mere kindness. If they would've explained the situation to begin with, I'd give 5 stars for safety, but in the end I was not assisted and got a very rude behavior which did not make me a safer climber. A business should understand how to balance safety and customer success better. They once knew it. Something there is not working anymore.
