Easily one of the best rock climbing gyms in the Boston/Cambridge area. The gym is equipped with many training walls and hang boards, and a nice cozy weight training area. The bouldering walls are plenty and set with many interesting and challenging problems. The grading is also on the more difficult end compared to their other locations. Lots of great climbers here too, and the vibes are always friendly and chilled. Can't wait to go back again :)

My favorite climbing gym in the region. However.... Kids under 14 aren't allowed to boulder at CRG so it's not an option for families.

This is the best gym in the Boston region, without a doubt. Excellent setters, great staff, tons of terrain. The climbs here are unique and have character. Only room for growth would be: I think they could set more dense here.

Great gym and huge improvement over the old one. Parking is significantly better for cars but they could still use more bike racks and it would be great if they could get better ones to replace the current school yard racks. The boards/pull up bar area gets really gross and has a lot of hair balls.

Great climbing gym located in Fresh Pond Mall! This location is quite close to Alewife station and boasts a large selection of bouldering walls and a comprehensive training area featuring two moon boards and a kilter board. The setting is quite good and walls are consistently being reset so there is always new stuff to try!

I love CRG Cambridge with all my heart, and the staff are truly the greatest humans alive. Itβs a thriving and wonderful community.
HOWEVER, the gym is a little too bright. It would be great if one of the three light strips could be turned off to reduce the fluorescence experience and electricity use. I would absolutely upgrade this review to a TEN star review if the lighting changed! Please consider doing this so we can have a happy medium for everyone!!!

Great new location, but total lack of morning-friendly hours. Hundreds of us working irregular hours have no other time than the morning to go to the gym. CRG can afford to staff the morning hours, but the management of this gym supposedly has no plans to change that.

Update:
Okay - the first time I walked in here, I noped right out - it has the glaring lighting of a surgical theater, and the aesthetic charm of a strip mallβ¦
Still, was I being unfair? Not entirely.
The good:
The VB corner near the front is kind of cute - about a dozen adjacently spaced VB ladder-likes for warmups/children/absolute beginners.
The new holds are nice and sandpapery, not a greasy one among them (yet).
Itβs big, has bigness, thereβs lots of it.
Lots of equipment in the weight room, if you use equipment this is probably a plus
The not so good:
Very little creativity in the routes YMMV, but I found there to be a lot of repetition and not much variety - sure there were dozens of routes at whichever rating you might choose - but literally nothing that gave me that romantic feeling of wanting to come back and back to a puzzle until Iβd mastered it with my body and mind
A few routes had volumes or protruding holds intersecting unsafely with either the climb or fallβ¦ scary - donβt drop kiddos
The lighting - omg - did anyone perhaps think that people often look up when theyβre at a climbing gym - when you do here, your vision is immediately pieced by these slender glaring 6000K LED strip lights - donβt look up kiddos
At least for now, no lockers in the rather tiny βlockerβ rooms
The also good:
The people all seemed nice, mostly to be having a good time, and in general it felt like a safe space - this matters and boosts Central Rock Fresh Pond to a tepid 2-star rating in my book. I wonβt be back, but that just means more space for the folks who will be!

This is a great CRG for bouldering and weight training. It's large, and has a ton of options for varied skill levels.
Regarding bouldering, I'm relatively new, and I found it offered a great selection of VB through V2. In fact, have visited Watertown, Randolph, and Stoneham CRG locations, and this had the best beginner options (followed by Watertown, Randolph, and finally Stoneham). They also had plenty of other more difficult options, and I was very pleased to find newer rental shoes then the other locations (a different and better type as well).
With respect, strength training, their weight lifting and hanging sections are equal to that of Watertown if not more substantial.
As for the building, it's large as mentioned. The whole place is kind of a giant hallway that goes straight back with bouldering on your left and right, followed by strength training stuff in the back. There are showers in the men's bathroom. The place was very clean. Oh, and I noticed one Google review complained about lighting, but rest assured the lighting has no issues. No idea what they're talking about.
I've suspended my membership due to the cost ($115 / month) being hard to justify during the summer when I'll only visit once a week at best, but I'll certainly be doing day passes and visiting this location occasionally. It'd be nice if CRG could offer a discounted membership based on frequency of use, season, or bouldering versus top rope and lead climbing.

Love this new location!! It is HUGE, even when itβs busy you donβt feel like youβre in peopleβs way and there are plenty of routes to try of varying difficulty. The two main walls are parallel to each other so you can see everyone and thereβs not really a danger of walking under someone climbing. Itβs really nice to have so much room.

Crg harvard is so fun!!! By far the best branch of crg. The staff are so welcoming and nice and now remember me by face and name. So much to do there, frequent updates and routes for many skill levels. I have had the best time there. Hardest gym in the area. I have a hard time going here as down climbs are scarce and itβs bad for my injuries to jump down from so high. I've been climbing for nearly 10 years, have lived and climbed all over the country, and this is the dirtiest gym I have ever been too. The entire place is covered in chalk, it's almost like they've never cleaned. The (men's) locker rooms are disgusting and some doors are falling off the lockers. The one plus in this gym is the fact that they have a Moon board and a Tension board for training. The staff is fairly friendly, but the setting is mediocre, and nearly every boulder is the same style. I honestly don't know how CRG let's this gym carry the CRG name, as I've been to a few others and they are all better by a lot. They have a location right down the street in Watertown that makes this location look like someone's basement wall.

Best CRG/gym in the Boston area. High turnover of quality boulder problems, well equipped training area, clean facilities, and friendly and inviting staff members. This gym is the main reason I belong to the CRG franchise, and other CRG facilities (Watertown) could learn a lot from this shining example of customer service and outstanding leadership. I can't recommend this facility enough.

Iβve been coming here for over three years now and I can comfortably say that this is easily the beat climbing gym in the greater Boston area. The staff is friendly, helpful and create an atmosphere that Is reassuring to new climbers who may be intimidated. They set a range of boulders that will leave both newer and veteran climbers satisfied. The setting is uniformly excellent and the staff excludes at setting boulders that are both fun and challenging. The training facilities are great and have anything youβd need to help you train for that outdoor project. The community is very supportive and have me become a better climber that I would have on my own. Overall this is an excellent gym for climbers of any level.

I typically climb at CRG Stoneham and I donβt see myself coming back to this location. I came at 11 for opening and scanned my card like the 2 people in front of me. As I start walking towards the weight lifting section, the employee, who was not at the desk, approached me and questioned whether I scanned my card or not. Iβve been paying $80 monthly for over a year now, so the assumption that Iβm trying to sneak in is offensive. Furthermore, the fact that he only went out of his way to question me, the black man, when he wasnβt even at the desk to greet or watch people scan in, makes it even more offensive. CRG Cambridge should start hiring people that treat all members equally

The place is big, but a little dark and dirty inside. Not the friendliest environment, but not mean either. This location has a reputation of rating all their climbs a lot lower than other gyms (so they're all harder as a result) and they have few climbs below a V4 (more like a V6 in other gyms).
